AC on the buses is always broken. Twice this week the ride has been miserable. They need to do better.

The nicest commuter bus I have ever been in…read more My sister and I along with a couple guys came out to Columbia for Virgin Mobile's FreeFest. On the Monday after the festival we had 7 hrs to do a turnaround trip from Columbia to DC before we had to hop on our flight back to LA. It sounded easy, until we came to realize that we were quite far from DC. After doing some research, we found this service from the Columbia Mall. We caught the bus around 7am. Our first impression: The bus: super clean, comfortable reclining seats, a/c and overhead reading lights (being from LA, I'm not used to commuter buses being luxury charter coaches). The driver: really nice and helpful, he had a few jerky stops at first, but after a while he got better and we were able to sleep. By the time we got into DC the bus was full of people en route to work, we seemed to be the only tourists. We got off at Independence Ave. It would have been a little easier if there were tourist maps on board, but the driver gave us suggestions on where to go. It took a little less than 2 hours to get into DC and it was perfect. The only problem we faced was getting back to Columbia because the earliest bus back started running at 2pm (reasonable because most of the riders were daily commuters). We ended up taking the Metro from Union Station to Silver Spring then a cab to Columbia Mall. The total trip back for the four of us was around $55 (Metro + cab), whereas our bus ride was around $5 per person. Yes, the cab + metro combo saved us 30 minutes, but it was much more expensive.

Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced. If you ride the 240 never expect the bus to…read morepost in the afternoons on time. There customer service is the pits. There are scheduling issues that this company refuses to address. If you have a different transportation option, I suggest you take it and save yourself the frustration. I was catching the last bus of the evening and got to the stop about 10 minutes ahead of time. Being a Friday I was the only one at the stop and pleasantly surprised to see the bus arriving on time. Unfortunately it blew right by without even pulling into the near lane. (I guess the driver didn't see me . . . . I was the guy waving my arms and a bright yellow backpack in the air like an idiot.) I called dispatch immediately and to their credit they called dispatch and had the bus come back around. I was told the bus was waiting for me 3 blocks back at an earlier stop and to walk there. No problem, figuring it would be turning before my stop to take a more direct route to the stops after mine. NOPE . . . . we went right past my stop. The driver even pulled over to the curb even though there really was no one there this time. (I guess making me walk 3 blocks in the ran was just because the driver thought I needed the exercise.)

The drivers are good, riders are diverse and professional, and Dillon's has gone out of their way whenever there was a problem. Once I left my phone on the morning bus and Dillon's dispatch asked the driver to give it to the evening driver who gave it to me. Another time our bus was struck by a car (no one was hurt but the car took off - the bus was so big, no one really even noticed onboard until the bus stopped) disabling the bus, and an empty bus came to pick us up in 20 minutes. I prefer taking the commuter bus 1,000 times more than the metro (which is always packed, broken down, bad cell connection, and thieves on every corner). On the bus I always get a seat, do my work on the bus or sleep, and there is never a worry that someone is going to steal my stuff or that I'll lose cell service. There are rules like no talking on the phone except for emergencies, and everyone seems to respect them.

This past January, I made reservations to park, but, unfortunately I needed to cancel them. I spoke with Alison Jefferson from Customer Relations at the time. She was able to give me a credit on my account. Even though I'm want planning on using it until this October I spoke with Mr Winkler today who assured me not only that I had a credit, but he proceeded to immediately make my the October reservation over the phone and email me the QR code. Now, that's customer service!!

The special I received was discount on parking that you could reserve up to a month before use. I was sent a QR code shortly before my trip to use when coming to the business. Upon entering the business, I was directed by a pleasant staff person to checkin in via QR code and they radioed the driver to let them know we were coming in and to wait to take us to the airport terminal. We parked and the pleasant driver assisted us with our luggage, gave us a card with our parking space number, and after picking up a couple more customers, we were on our way to the airport. Once we arrived at our airline stop, they assisted us with taking off our luggage. When we return, there is an area outside of BWI where they will come and we will board the van to take us to the business to pick up our vehicle. All in all, The Parking Spot West adequately meets the needs for off-airport parking for us.

This line operates the commuter buses from the Baltimore area to DC and suburban DC areas. On the…read morepositive side, the ride is more comfortable and there are fewer stops than a Metro bus. The down side is the IQ of the drivers varies. Some have the wit to count how many people have boarded and will not take on more riders if they don't have a seat for them, but some don't care so you'll end up standing the whole time, even if one is disabled (it's not always a sure thing that they'll enforce handicapped seating). Some drivers are fond of "jack rabbits" starts so anyone in the aisle will fall unless they are gripping the back of someone's seat. (And if you fall, they'll ignore you, not even asking if you're OK.) Some are fun, lively people who sing along to opera playing on their radios. It's sort of like Forrest Gump and his chocolates, but the bad drivers outnumber the good ones, in my experience. If you want a window seat, it's best to be on either end of the commute, or take the bus late in the PM run or early in the AM. Also, traffic can double the estimated time in the schedule, so resign yourself to a lot of waiting for the bus to show up. (Particularly if it's freezing rain out, you'll wait half an hour or more between buses.) And when schools are 2 hours late, they don't adjust their schedule, and buses only run once every few hours after 8 AM or so. Cost varies (for example, they charge $3.50 for service from Burtonsville to Silver Spring; $4.25 from Columbia to DC). If you buy a 10 trip ticket, there's a 10% discount. They also sell monthly passes at the MTA site that work out to another 10-15% discount. I rate this company low because their drivers are so bad but if you really hate driving to work, and public transportation is too creepy or inconvenient, you might try it. I wish it were better.

The bus got there on time. The driver was friendly. The bus looked like a fairly newer model. If you're a "bodybuilder" like me. The middle aisle is a little small so you might have to turn to the sides to get to the back. The seats have some leg room. But the width of the seats is something else. My right arm since I had the window seat on the left side was clearly 20% into the other persons seat even with the arm rest. The other person didn't show up so I had both seats to myself..... The bus had very good heat thru the entire bus. There is a bathroom onboard also as well as two AC outlets on the window side below. The overall ride was pretty nice and not bad. For 24bucks or 33bucks. People have to realize this is not the Marriott of the road. But more like the Days Inn of the road. I didn't expect that much for the price I paid. Will definitely do again. You can't beat the price for a round trip ticket to NYC. Also the driver was on time going and leaving so that's a plus.

This has to also be some sort of other operation, it's the only way it makes sense after what we experienced today and after the reviews we've read. I've never used them, but oh my word is the driver we came across on the Nu turnpike N bound today one of the most insane, reckless, homicidal drivers I've ever encountered. And I live in NYC. Bus #613. First, we come to a merge and he's behind me. I'm braking, as the vehicle in front of me is braking and he proceeds to pass right by me on the driver's side - I had to swerve to avoid him driving right into me. Then after the merge point, it opens into 2 lanes again. He's in the left lane, which he shouldn't have been. He moves over to the right and then sticks his arm out the window, waving me on. So I proceeded to move past him. As I'm about mid bus, he purposefully swerved towards me, almost causing me to hit the barrier. I wish I had a dash cam. He should have his license revoked, and he should be charged with reckless endangerment.
