The nicest commuter bus I have ever been in…read more My sister and I along with a couple guys came out to Columbia for Virgin Mobile's FreeFest. On the Monday after the festival we had 7 hrs to do a turnaround trip from Columbia to DC before we had to hop on our flight back to LA. It sounded easy, until we came to realize that we were quite far from DC. After doing some research, we found this service from the Columbia Mall. We caught the bus around 7am. Our first impression: The bus: super clean, comfortable reclining seats, a/c and overhead reading lights (being from LA, I'm not used to commuter buses being luxury charter coaches). The driver: really nice and helpful, he had a few jerky stops at first, but after a while he got better and we were able to sleep. By the time we got into DC the bus was full of people en route to work, we seemed to be the only tourists. We got off at Independence Ave. It would have been a little easier if there were tourist maps on board, but the driver gave us suggestions on where to go. It took a little less than 2 hours to get into DC and it was perfect. The only problem we faced was getting back to Columbia because the earliest bus back started running at 2pm (reasonable because most of the riders were daily commuters). We ended up taking the Metro from Union Station to Silver Spring then a cab to Columbia Mall. The total trip back for the four of us was around $55 (Metro + cab), whereas our bus ride was around $5 per person. Yes, the cab + metro combo saved us 30 minutes, but it was much more expensive.

I was catching the last bus of the evening and got to the stop about 10 minutes ahead of time. Being a Friday I was the only one at the stop and pleasantly surprised to see the bus arriving on time. Unfortunately it blew right by without even pulling into the near lane. (I guess the driver didn't see me . . . . I was the guy waving my arms and a bright yellow backpack in the air like an idiot.) I called dispatch immediately and to their credit they called dispatch and had the bus come back around. I was told the bus was waiting for me 3 blocks back at an earlier stop and to walk there. No problem, figuring it would be turning before my stop to take a more direct route to the stops after mine. NOPE . . . . we went right past my stop. The driver even pulled over to the curb even though there really was no one there this time. (I guess making me walk 3 blocks in the ran was just because the driver thought I needed the exercise.)

He had provided proper instructions at the gate, my bad. The driver, he is an Air Force Veteran, was also very professional. Helped us with loading and unloading our baggage. He wrote down our space number on a card, including we are Premium. And made sure we were informed on identifying the correct West bus on our return.

The special I received was discount on parking that you could reserve up to a month before use. I was sent a QR code shortly before my trip to use when coming to the business. Upon entering the business, I was directed by a pleasant staff person to checkin in via QR code and they radioed the driver to let them know we were coming in and to wait to take us to the airport terminal. We parked and the pleasant driver assisted us with our luggage, gave us a card with our parking space number, and after picking up a couple more customers, we were on our way to the airport. Once we arrived at our airline stop, they assisted us with taking off our luggage. When we return, there is an area outside of BWI where they will come and we will board the van to take us to the business to pick up our vehicle. All in all, The Parking Spot West adequately meets the needs for off-airport parking for us.

This line operates the commuter buses from the Baltimore area to DC and suburban DC areas. On the…read morepositive side, the ride is more comfortable and there are fewer stops than a Metro bus. The down side is the IQ of the drivers varies. Some have the wit to count how many people have boarded and will not take on more riders if they don't have a seat for them, but some don't care so you'll end up standing the whole time, even if one is disabled (it's not always a sure thing that they'll enforce handicapped seating). Some drivers are fond of "jack rabbits" starts so anyone in the aisle will fall unless they are gripping the back of someone's seat. (And if you fall, they'll ignore you, not even asking if you're OK.) Some are fun, lively people who sing along to opera playing on their radios. It's sort of like Forrest Gump and his chocolates, but the bad drivers outnumber the good ones, in my experience. If you want a window seat, it's best to be on either end of the commute, or take the bus late in the PM run or early in the AM. Also, traffic can double the estimated time in the schedule, so resign yourself to a lot of waiting for the bus to show up. (Particularly if it's freezing rain out, you'll wait half an hour or more between buses.) And when schools are 2 hours late, they don't adjust their schedule, and buses only run once every few hours after 8 AM or so. Cost varies (for example, they charge $3.50 for service from Burtonsville to Silver Spring; $4.25 from Columbia to DC). If you buy a 10 trip ticket, there's a 10% discount. They also sell monthly passes at the MTA site that work out to another 10-15% discount. I rate this company low because their drivers are so bad but if you really hate driving to work, and public transportation is too creepy or inconvenient, you might try it. I wish it were better.

Save yourself the stress--take the train, another bus line, or any other option. Just avoid this one. This company needs to be investigated by the DOT for reckless driving and other serious issues. They cross state lines, so complaints can be filed with the DOT. On our trip to New York, the first bus was 30-40 minutes late. The second driver then nearly caused two accidents and drove excessively over the speed limit. Both drivers were reckless and should be monitored by state troopers and fined. If anyone is ready this, and knows a few state troopers, because it's insane. Especially the way the driver went through the toll booth, he was driving at such a high rate of speed, I thought he was going to hit the toll booth. Insanely dangerous. For our return trip, the bus never even showed up. We are now forced to dispute the charges with our credit card company and are warning everyone we know to stay far away from this company. We travel to New York several times a year for business--usually by train--but decided to give this bus company a try. That was a huge mistake. I cannot believe how unprofessional they are. Something is seriously wrong with this company; it feels like they are intentionally trying to scam customers while giving nothing but the runaround.
