I got a free inspection + quote from Tar Heel Basement Systems and they were super pushy and rude…read more Salesman would not take no for an answer, and they tried all kinds of slimy tactics to close the deal. "Sign today to get an additional x% discount" "My boss won't like this but...." "Oh oops I forgot to add this one $10,000 piece to your invoice, the price we've been discussing for 1/2 hour is now 50% higher" "Well I guess I could give you the friends and family discount..." etc etc Every time I said no to their "absolute lowest price they can do," they came back with another "lowest price" with some kind of discount or deal that they "shouldn't do, but can make an exception for..." I've read online that they do excellent work, but all they wanted to talk about was their competitors. If I had a nickel for every time I heard about "the other guys," I could possibly afford their newest "absolute best price we can do." Not a fan. Just tell me the price, tell me what you do, and cut the gimmicks.

Very very responsive organization. After some of the rains I went into my crawl space and noted…read moresome standing water. I asked Tar Heel to come by and make a determination to mitigate the problem. Before Colin arrived, I had a good sense of what was needed. I had an issue with a basement problem in a former house, so I was prepared for any "oversell." Oh, and my wife had over 36 years in the building industry. Colin provided a very detailed findings and options for correcting the water problem. We were both happy with the proposal and will be moving forward.

WARNING!!!! ZERO STARS! Do not hire Higgins Renovations - Kernersville, NC. Unethical Business…read morePractices! A Rip-Off! Full of Excuses! Always asking for more money! His mismanagement of monies lead to Higgins buying tools, ladders, 2x4's to build scaffolding, products, using the items, returning the items for refunds/store credit to make new purchases for the project. He admitted he was so deep in debt, he did not know what else to get back on track. Lacks business & time management skills. Brags about his BNI referral (BNI is not affiliated with Higgins Renovations), Preys on your emotions! Higgins abandons projects to take on new clients! Do not trust this company/ this man! Do not be fooled by Jose Higgins/Higgins Renovation. He is creative & talented, has photos of work performed, just enough to lure you into a contract. BEWARE!!!!! Higgins started our project September 18, 2020. We maintained our agreed upon payment schedule & like any other project, we had add-ons, made changes, rework, etc. Each step of the way, Higgins gave a new estimate of completion date. Fair, right?! Here's the problem. We interviewed 5 contractors & each tested our trim paint to make sure it was not oil-based paint (including Higgins). Jose looked at the original paint cans in the attic at the onset of the project & in the closets to confirm the trim was water-base paint during his interview. The day the painting was to start, the painters did not show. We lost an entire week of work. Higgins was not responding to my calls & text messages. Within 2 minutes of me sending an email stating our contractual agreement which would allow me to terminate & begin legal action, Jose called & committed to be at out home by 1:30pm/arrived at 4:30pm. He explained he had been scrambling to find painters. The original painter (Jerry/BNI member) came back, apologized for the inconvenience; & they attempted to convince me the trim paint was oil-based. Jose insisted he needed $2,900 to prime & paint the trim. I refused, I called the builder & confirmed the trim was not oil-based, we tested the trim, it was not oil-based, gave both Jerry & Jose access to the paint cans which read "waterborne paint" on the label, they still attempt to gouge me. Jerry called Sherwin-William who confirmed water-based & not oil-based. I called Sherwin-Williams, spoke with same rep Jerry spoke with & confirmed the trim was not oil-based; he was willing to 3-way call & speak with both of us. Higgins then insisted he made a mistake on the estimate, "I forgot to include material cost for the painting, I only charged you for labor." I requested all receipts for purchases before payment was rendered. We made our payments on time, & I refused to give Higgins any more money before the end of the project. The project went south. Higgins & (unlicensed) day workers would commit to work and not show up for days. I found workers in bathrooms for hours/smoking/not working. Always full of excuses. Workers weren't paid. "Higgins says you're not giving him anymore money until the project is finished, maybe you would pay me directly." I refused, worker entered my house without my knowledge. I had to get the police involved! Our agreed upon contract ended October 29, 2020. November 13, 2020, floors needed additional sanding/staining, painting, replacement of toilet Higgins worker cracked, electrical switches (wrong covers/plates), wainscoting not finished (materials ordered had come in/Higgins had not come to pick up). I picked up materials bcuz Higgins was not responding to calls or text messages. I received a call from an unlicensed worker advising he would be taking over my project & Higgins had made agreements that I would pay him the balance! I received a call from Higgins stating he had taken on 3 new projects & he was not coming back. He said he would send a licensed contractor, never did. I received a second call, different worker, stating Higgins said he could have the balance due if he finished the job. We had to clean up/removed his stuff. There is so much more to this catastrophe. BEWARE - When Higgins reads this review, he will rebut with excuses, in the name of saving his reputation. I have no reason to fabricate, look at the pictures. We're not the first to share our negative experience with Higgins Renovations. Check Yelp & do your homework! Hire a reputable company, Higgins Renovation is not Reputable! There are others in the Winston-Salem, NC communities who have had similar horrific experiences. He is not to be trusted with your renovation projects. Something positive ~ Thankfully, we were able to hire Moreno Hardwood Flooring, Thomasville, NC after Higgins abandoned the project. Moreno professionally sanded and completed our flooring project (1,822 sq ft) within 3 days! Thank you Moreno for coming to our rescue! We still have unfinished work which is scheduled to be completed by ethical/reputable companies.

DO NOT USE HIGGINS RENOVATIONS! We had previously used Jose…read moreHiggins, Higgins Renovations and were satisfied with the work. We then entrusted our hardwood floors to his company based on his claim of years of experience refinishing floors- and had a opposite-terrible experience. $2500 paid-Missed Deadlines, Poor workmanship, Poor Quality Material-UnSatisfactory Outcome-Higgins abondoned project-No Reparation or refund. Details following: * Poor quality workmanship, After sanding and refinishing our floors, our floors(entire floor area) were pitted due to poor sanding. *Also as result of poor workmanship there were numerous rough patches from improper sanding. * Previous stain was not removed from around and under edges of cabinets. *Lack of attention to detail: Excessive dusk throughout my home because workers did not properly protect our home from sanding dust- So bad Higgins offered to pay for cleaning (which of course did not happen) *Substandard Quality of Materials-After stain applied there were lighter areas where stain was missing-finish not consistent. After a week when stain and poly should have cured, the stain was easily scratched and already coming off due to poor quality of materials. -Re substandard materials, our new flooring company who redid our floors-confirmed Higgins used substandard consumer grade polyurethane. Higgins even agreed the floors did not look good but was not willing to rectify the matter or refund money paid or do anything to make the situation right. In fact the owner, Jose Higgins abondoned the project, claimed he was filing bankruptcy and would do nothing.
