Smothered fries -- if you get the top ones they're tasty.
    Bob S.

Table was ready when we arrived despite a packed house on a Saturday. Service was great. Appetizers/small plates for 2 (they also have 4) were huge. Appetizers were kind of spicy so when the smothered chicken burritos arrived bland, we were pretty surprised. It might be because they're adept with shredded chicken -- there's no choice other than a tofu faux beef -- but it was like the chicken came from a can. Fortunately we were stuffed and could fix it at home. The Tres Leches dessert was insane! If you go to Diego's and don't order it, you're an imbecile. We might go back just for this dessert. Really. It was that good. The house margarita was average -- also bland -- and the frozen piña colada was light on the taste as well. Service was fabulous though. Very knowledgeable and attentive staff. Menu needs work.

Vegan Nachos were tasty but they forgot my jalapeños

I'm super curious about who's loving the food here. Like, I'm not even being cheeky; I want to know! Diego's Cantina is owned by the wife and husband who own Frida's and Station No.3. I was never a big fan of Frida's food, but Station No.3 wooed me, so I wasn't sure what to expect from Diego's, but I was hopeful. Ambiance: 8/10 The restaurant is beautiful. Evening service is dim, so it could be great for date night or those allergic to bright lights. There's a small patio if you like outdoor dining. Food: 3/10 Vegan Loaded Nachos were fine in taste but lacking in the "loaded" category. For over $15 you get a ton of tortilla chips (some overcooked), topped with refried pinto beans, a little corn, a little jalapeño crema, cilantro, and lots of white onions and shredded radish. It's supposed to come with jalapeños too, but they forgot them. (I asked for them and just took them to go with the leftovers) I've never liked cheese, so it didn't really bother me that there wasn't a vegan cheese; I would've omitted it anyway. But I can hear vegans complaining about this; most people love their cheese. If you want to add black beans or vegan steak seitan, it's gonna cost you a few dollars more for each. Small guacamole. The taste was fine, but for $5 I'd like more than a nano-scoop. Vegan Street Corn - just burnt corn. My friend and God-sister are both meat eaters and got fish tacos. Each complained about the lack of flavor and seasoning. One was even so brazen as to ask our waitress who was cooking the food. That was too much, but the answer didn't surprise us. The waitress admitted that Diego's serves "healthy Mexican." So if your palette is on the bland, no flavor, no spice spectrum, this is your place. For me, Imma need them to have several seats, preferably in front of a spice cabinet. We ran into some friends whilst leaving who proclaimed, "We come for the drinks. The food sucks." And that folks, about sums it up.

Diego's unfortunately fell pretty short of my expectations. We each ordered just about the cheapest options on the menu, and it was still around $40+ each for dinner. This is definitely an UPSCALE spot, but I just didn't think the food quality and quantity was any better than a typical Mexican restaurant. Our server seemed tired and stretched between multiple tables so it was hard to get ahold of her. They also charge you for a refill of chips which felt a bit criminal. The only redeeming factor for me was the ambiance was a unique theme and very nice decor concept. However, I'm mostly here for the food, so I won't be returning to Diego's anytime soon.

This place nails it! The atmosphere was fantastic. We started at the bar (chillin' and chattin'), and then moved to a table. The server took us to a booth, but we requested to change to 1/2 booth, 1/2 table which suited us better. They were very accommodating. The cocktails are PERFECT and I love the large selection. The food was AMAAAAZING and enjoyed by all! The service was good and the prices are, IMO, reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

First time at Diego's was pretty good. The queso was delicious as was the mojito. The birria chicken taco was underwhelming. I didn't care for the green sauce and it was kind of bland. The rice and beans were average. The fish taco and the veggie taco were good. Got dessert for my bday. Overall had a great time, the service was prompt and friendly. The place looks great. Will be back.

Walked in to a charming and cozy venue at happy hour. Bar service was great! Bartender was attentive, knowledgeable and personable in a customer friendly way. The drink selection is phenomenal and well prepared no matter if you enjoy a cocktail, beer or wine. Served alongside a few chips and salsa and happy is the hour! The menu is more upscale from usual Mexican food, but vegan!! and gf!!! or not! and more little plate choices for each dish. Great choice for south of the border dining out!

This place is really cute. The food is ok..the only thing I really like is the chicken enchiladas. The queso, although exciting when it arrived to the table, was just ok. The highlight of this place is the margaritas!!! They are amazing! My favorite is the Purist! Omg!!! And the bartender is amazing! I have literally tried all of the drinks and they do not disappoint!

As a vegetarian, Diego's has definitely been one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis so far. The ambiance is here is amazing, good music, gorgeous interiors. The staff was friendly for the most part, except for our waitress who kept making snide remarks at a member of our party. I love love love the amount of vegetarian and vegan options that they have, and that almost everything can be modified to be vegan, from the queso, to tacos, to nachos. The food was quite good as well! I loved the crispy beef taco especially. The beans and rice, however, were kind of bland. I will definitely be coming back to work my way through the menu

Cozy with classy decor. Service is a bit slow, however there is a sign on the hostess stand with a note about being short staffed. The staff looked busy so I'm sure they were doing their best. My wife ordered a margarita and said it was excellent. Fish tacos are amazing.

Ambiance- 10/10 it's beautiful inside Service-6/10 honestly I think the server wasn't happy we didn't order drinks and just drank water. It almost felt dismissive and we had to beg for refills of our drinks. Food-4/10 it's just meh. It's grossly overpriced for everything you get. Is it edible? Yes. But almost $7.00 for one street taco- craziness. My burrito was large which felt better matched to the $14 price tag. Did I mention absolutely zero sides come with these prices? Everything n is a La carte so your dinner can get super pricey real fast. The salsa was absolutely disgusting. Would I come back? No. I get better Mexican food at chimis and that's not saying much.

I made a reservation and was surprised to get a text beforehand letting me know our table was ready. When we arrived, we were promptly seated on the patio. Our waiter was quick to come over and give us menus, water, and salsa & chips. The chips were warm and good, but the salsa was just ok - a bit bland and zero spice. We ordered some drinks - the paloma, a margarita, and the smokin' hot. We were asked if we wanted floaters for the paloma and the margarita. Then our waiter told us about some of their popular apps and we decided to get the queso flameado. Lighting the queso on fire was a bit of a let down because we were outside and there was a fan right by us, but the guy who delivered it to the table made it comical. The queso was delicious and did not disappoint! For meals I got the enfrijoladas and the others got the chicken burrito. For the chicken burrito they were asked if they wanted cheese on the side or smothered on top (not sure if it came with the meal or not), but they both got it on the side. The enfrijoladas were delicious and the ingredients tasted very fresh. The chicken burrito looked good. Throughout everything our waiter was personable and making a lot of jokes. I started to wonder if it was a requirement of the job. When we finished with our meals we said we wanted to get more drinks, but I thought we were going to let the waiter know which ones we wanted - instead he just brought each of us the drinks we already ordered. The waiter had cleared the chips & salsa, but brought us new chips & salsa (on the house) to go with our drinks. All in all I thought it was a pretty good experience. Like some of the other comments here, it felt like there was a good amount of upcharging on already pricey meals. But the quality of the ingredients was great.

    Intro to Diego's

This was a place I've been eyeing for a minute and was given a surprise birthday treat by my gf for dinner here. I liked the ambiance with the artwork, music and the greenery they used. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. He even suggested to wait a bit for happy hour (our reservation was 7:30 and happy hour started at 8). And was very clear and detailed about the menu options. We got queso blanco, guac, corn, a few tacos, a couple of 'My Wife's Margarita's and a sangria. Major points on presentation of food. The queso blanco wasn't as hot as expected but tasty. And the tacos were okay. I like the shrimp taco the best. For dessert, we ordered a tres leche cake and a complimentary scoop of ice cream, which was good. It was a good experience and the server made us feel very welcome.

    Amazing Pineapple jalepeno margarita

Diego's interior will knock your socks off. It is gorgeous and so well decorated! That was my favorite part. Our server was great and so were the cocktails. The food was good overall, but it depended on what you got. We mostly ordered off the happy hour menu. We had the quesadilla, queso, costra de Camaron (my favorite item), Diego's carnitas (very good), and a chorizo taco. For drinks, I had the pineapple jalepeno margarita and My Wife's margarita and both were fantastic with the pineapple jalepeno margarita being my favorite. We sat inside right by the doors that were open to the patio and it was such a nice spot. I want to come back and sit in the beautiful back room!

The music in the background and terracotta designs highlighted the threads of Mexican culture but made the Homer statue appear to be a little out of place! Definitely a fun dining experience. The outdoor seating felt super spacious. It was a beautiful day and temperate weather to be able eat outside. It did have numerous umbrellas and a covered portion which kept most of the seating shaded. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was good. I was a little disappointed with the bread used for the Torta. I was expecting a bolillo type bread where it the outside is a crisp crust but the inside is airy, chewy and sweet. Instead it was a Telera Bread that was like a very crumbly messy french roll. The pieces of chicken were very thin and cut into strips instead of one patty. It was very dry and not much flavor. The fries were potato-y but not seasoned or salty. Very bland. The aroma of all the food was phenomenal. Dedicating my 500th review to the food I eat every single day living on campus at WashU. According…read moreto many different review sites, this campus has one of the best foods in the US and sometimes it's true, but at other times... Favorite Food Items - This is surprising but the pizza here is actually really good. They load up on toppings on each slice and the edges are perfectly crispy. - Sweet Potato Fries - WashU makes one of the hands-down, best sweet potato fries in the US. - Coconut Shrimp Curry - They barely make this but this is the hands-down best thing to eat at BD. They give you so much shrimp and the curry is fantastic! - Mozzarella Sticks - Every Friday, they have some version of this dish and its delicious, especially with the yummy marinara sauce. - The plain fish is sometimes really good and other times, its really raw. Foods to Avoid - The amount of times I have eaten a raw chicken here is a little bit insane. This is in particular reference to the Tikka Masala Chicken. - The burgers are fine as long as you want to wait up to 20 minutes for them. - The Chinese food is here is not authentic because the sauce they use is wrong - I end up usually just dousing the entire thing with Sriracha to add a snippet of flavor. - Currywurst - I don't know if I just don't like currywurst or BD makes it extra bad but there is a lingering organ-y flavor to this dish that is not appetizing. - Sichuanese Vegetables - Think soupy hot sauce and vegetables and you got yourself the dish. The atmosphere is fine. The chairs used to be really janky until they fixed it for the quarantine period which is great because now they are sit-able. I do love the amount of condiments they have though which includes peanut butter any time of the day. BIG yes for college students. Overall BD is as good of a place as you would expect from a college dorm. Maybe slightly better because they do try to vary up the dishes served but you can always trust pizza... I think right now I would give it a 3 star because I eat there for every single meal for 2 years in a row, but because I will probably have some nostalgia once I graduate, 4 stars it is!

The Bear's Den at Washington University in St. Louis serves as one of the central dining and social…read morespaces on campus, but the overall experience often feels inconsistent compared to what students expect from a major university dining facility. While the location is convenient and the space itself is usually active and social, the quality of the food and service can vary significantly depending on the time of day and how crowded it is. One of the strongest aspects of the Bear's Den is the variety. Students have access to multiple stations and cuisines, which helps prevent dining fatigue during long semesters. The late-night accessibility is also valuable, especially for students balancing demanding coursework, extracurriculars, and campus jobs. The atmosphere can feel energetic and community-oriented, making it a common place for students to meet friends, study casually, or take a break between classes. However, the dining experience frequently struggles with consistency. During peak hours, long wait times and overcrowding can make meals stressful rather than convenient. Food quality can also be uneven; some meals are fresh and well-prepared, while others feel rushed, repetitive, or lacking in flavor. Pricing relative to portion size is another common frustration among students, particularly for those already paying substantial tuition and dining costs. Cleanliness and organization sometimes become concerns during busy periods as well. Tables may remain uncleared for extended periods, and mobile orders can become delayed or confusing when demand is high. Although staff members are often working under significant pressure, the operational flow does not always keep pace with the number of students relying on the facility daily. Overall, the Bear's Den succeeds as an important social and functional hub on campus, but it falls short of being a consistently high-quality dining experience. It reflects both the strengths and limitations of large university dining systems: convenient, accessible, and diverse, yet often overcrowded and inconsistent in execution. With stronger quality control, faster service management, and more attention to food freshness, the Bear's Den could better match the expectations students have for campus dining at WashU.
