Not a good experience. Decor resembled a biker bar. Not clean, tables sticky. Charged for chips and salsa. Took awhile to get a refill on salsa. Ordered steak to be medium rare , got medium well. Scallops fishy and dry. Service ok but not outstanding. Margaritas excellent. Will try other Mexican food in the area before and if I ever return read more

Came down for a vegan smorgasbord (and mezcal). Patio, deck and insides were all open and lively as its tourist season. Ordered an embarrassing amount of vegan dishes. There is a separate menu, so check it out. Both quesadillas are my favs. While the food menu grew, the drink menu shrunk (pandemic, lack of staff, etc.). I remember an oldie, but a goodie I used to love (Last Word in Oaxaca) and the bartender happily made it for me. The staff is so outstanding here. Megan and Willy are the dream team. Wyatt, our server, was friendly and energetic. Love feeling like Norm from Cheers when I go to the Newport or Providence location. This crew knows how to make their guests feel welcome, help them relax, and show them a good time. IF you go on a busy night where staff seems less than 100%, do cut them some slack. They are good people busting their butts in one of the busiest beach towns in RI. read more

Very tasty. Some friends and I were in Newport today and we scoped out a few restaurants online beforehand. My friend are vegetarians and Diego's veggie items + vegan menu won them over. When we arrived we were told it would be a 45-minute wait, but it ended up being more like 20 - they take your phone number and text you when your table is ready. We split an order of the chips + salsa ($10.50) to start, but it had 4 different types of salsas, and we also added guac. The guac needed more salt and was just okay. The salsa verde (green salsa) was great, as was the red salsas, but for me the star of the show was definitely the pico de gallo - it had pineapple and some other things in it. For entrees, I ordered the carne asada tacos - you only get 2 for $15, but it came with blue corn tortillas, which I had never seen before (looked purple! Very pretty), and legit pieces of steak, vs. like chunks of ground beef. My friends ordered the veggie enchiladas, and also the buffalo cauliflower burrito, and liked both. The only negative thing I can say about Diego's is there are only two onesie bathrooms, and when I used one there was no toilet paper ... only wipes, which was weird (I'm assuming that was to wipe your hands, not other areas ...) but later we saw a waitress adding more TP to the bathrooms. I would definitely come back to Diego's again, prices were on par with the other Newport menus we had looked at and the food was tasty. read more

We have been here in the on and off season, and no matter what time of year, this place gets busy so prepare for that. We always get Diego's nachos, which is a generous portion with toppings too. They don't skimp out on that. Their calamari is a bit on the small side, but still tasty, especially with their aioli. We have gotten their burritos and empanadas on different occasions too, all which don't disappoint. I find their menu overwhelming and dishes show 3837934747 ingredients, but take a look ahead of time if you need time to make decisions. This applies to their cocktails too - there are a ton. read more

Hands down the absolute BEST Mexican food in the area or possibly all of Rhode Island! Fantastic margaritas, excellent guacamole, and I highly recommend the street tacos! The Cali burrito will blow your mind! You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The atmosphere and decor are really fun. The music is great, and the upstairs bar area has an amazing view. The staff and bartenders are also super friendly. Total gem!! read more

Ask for Darius, he's just the most adorable ever. Has the best smile with super good vibes. Coming from Cali, Diego's is definitely not the best Mexican food ever, but the drinks are good, the seafood is fresh, the variety of food is fun and churros were great. The guacamole topped with seafood was yummy and paired well with the refreshing drinks. Plus, Diego's was still serving food after 10pm, when every other kitchen wasn't, on a Friday night. read more

Food was very good. We did make a reservation online for 2 PM for their Sunday Brunch not realizing brunch ended at 1:30, however it was advertised that our reservation was for brunch so the confusion there was disappointing. The restaurant was busy, they had igloos outside for outdoor seating. I was not a fan of their "Standard Margarita" it tasted off. I ordered the Perfect Quesadilla, and though it was very tasty, the portion size was very small, for the price of what a full-size meal should've been. It was on a mini tortilla, I was not expecting it to be that small. Another ordered the Birra Taquitos which I was told was good but again, small portion size. read more

The food was delicious and well sized however the server today during lunch today has been the worst server I have seen in a very long time. And to be fair if the place was packed I would understand but we were one of three groups here and it took almost an hour to get anything. We were here for 30min before even getting water. The ambiance was nice however her service has ruined this place for me. There is a reason your tips % goes down if you choose to just play on your phone and flirt with the bar tender. Again food is good but the service is not worth it, go to the red parrot if you want amazing service because you not going to get it here. read more

Was here a couple of weekends ago in an igloo. 3 stars for the igloo, basically (cool they are keeping it going for groups that aren't comfortable in a crowded spot yet!) Service was brusque at best. I get that our server had to walk out especially to the igloos versus the ease of a normal dining room. Someone in our party asked for salt and pepper, got no response, asked again and was told "I heard you". Maybe just having a bad day but for Diego prices you hope you can get the bare minimum. Food has been better other times we've been there. We got nachos which were overcooked and dry, a mini quesadilla which was great, and loaded fries. The fries were just not what we were expecting but were ok. Awesome special cocktail came in a cute glass and a solid Long Island Iced Tea. read more

Twice when we've had the misfortune of being in Newport we've eaten here. Visit number one was ok, but underwhelming. That time we had brunch, and while the service was good the food was pretty uninspired. The second time we had a larger party, so there was more food to try and things were still not great. We got several different salsas to try and they were all bad, frankly; not fresh tasting, not well seasoned. I had some fish tacos which I regretted and left most of them behind. I think if your expectations are very well managed and you understand that this is basically a bar that grew a full kitchen somehow you might be ok. Otherwise, you're going to go in expecting credible Tex Mex food and be sad instead. Get a Bloody Mary and avoid the seafood and you should be ok if you can't get a table anywhere else. read more

I mainly like coming here for the drinks but the food never disappoints too. This is a mexican-inspired restaurant with a bohemian twist. The bartenders know their drinks, and the waiters are fun and friendly. The bar on the second floor has a tiki, nautical, and creepily fun dark theme. There are two other Diego locations, but this is thy far my favorite. Give it a try next time you're in town. read more

Enjoyed a great lunch at Diego's today. They have a great space under a tent with heaters and tables are spaced well enough apart. All staff are wearing masks and they even have a QR code to get the menu so you don't have to worry about touching a menu others have touched. They are following Covid restrictions to a T. It was easy to get a table but if visiting on a weekend or for dinner maybe calling ahead might be a good idea. We were seated outside under a tent but it was warm even tho it was cold outside. They had festive decorations and heaters. The staff was friendly and service was quick. Even tho most places are limiting your time due to Covid I did not feel rushed which was nice. The prices were reasonable. The portions were also good. Now for the food! I ordered the brisket tacos which were on the daily specials menu so I'm not sure if they have them all the time. They were excellent and came with a small side of rice which was perfect. Haha they were filling but not soo filling that I found myself wanting a nap after lunch haha. I don't like anything super spicy and they were just right. Flavorful but not overpowering. read more

Great place for brunch. Food took a while to arrive but to be fair, we did have a pretty large party. What a great find in the Wharf area of Newport. Made a reservation for lunch on Thursday and was a perfect spot to grab a bite to eat before hitting the beach. We ordered the chips and 4-salsa sampler. It was a great way to try out their salsas. Really enjoyed the pineapple one and the smoked one. We also got the fish tacos and they were really delicious. We got the chicken tacos too and this was my hubs favorite. Shared some Spanish rice and it was prepared well. Great food and service. Our waitress was super attentive and even the manager came over to check on us. Can't ask for more in a place! read more

The food was ok nothing special. The reason for the one star review is the couple setting next to us had a dog. We were sitting outside and the dog was well behaved. The dog laid under the edge of the table the whole time and never made a noise. The whole problem I have is that our waitress and another employee went over and pet the dog. I think it is very unprofessional and unsanitary for any restaurant employee to pet any animal and got back to serving people. read more

We had been to Diego's a few years ago and had great service and food. Today that was not the case. They no longer offer complimentary chips and salsa, instead charging $5 for cold tortilla chips and a small dish of salsa. The "perfect" quesadilla was far from perfect. It looked like a small appetizer or a kid's meal and cost $13. The music was really loud and unpleasant unless you like grunge/heavy metal while you eat a late lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. The service was slow and not particularly friendly. On a positive note, the food tasted good but the amount of food for the price is definitely not worth it. I would not go back. Disappointing. read more

Great spot in Newport for Mexican. I love how they have a vegan menu upon request. Tons of options on there. I loved the vegan enchiladas. It's a huge platter with Spanish rice and beans. The mocktails were good too. They do charge extra for chips and salsa. I wish it was complimentary like most Mexican spots. The vegan Cali burrito was also yummy. The crack fries were ok, not too spicy for me. I did have to ask for salt and hot sauce. Service was good. Def recommend if you are in Newport. read more

Diego's - Fish tacos! - Mexican Near Me - Newport, Rhode Island

I always sort of scoffed at Diego's in the past because it's located on a main tourist drag, and is always super crowded during the summer months. Anywhere there's huge groups of people... well, let's just say you can usually count me out. However, I'm glad I gave this place a chance, because I was pleasantly surprised by what I found! Diego's is a venerable Mexican restaurant with a decidedly "Baja Californian" twist to it. New England's never gonna be on the map for incredible Mexican food, but I did enjoy my drink and meal. It's not Los Angeles, but if you're looking for an easy bite in a cozy and unique restaurant downtown, you should add this joint to your list. The multilevel space (upstairs in new as of last year) has ample seating and quirky decorations that will fuel your conversations while you wait for your tiki cocktails and flavorful appetizers. Check out the succulent planters - they're pretty interesting! :) Combined with warm red mood lighting and a soundtrack of tunes that'll surely get the party started, you know you're in for fun night at Diego's! They also have one of the best restaurant harbor views in town ever since expanding, and if you can get a seat by the window, you won't be disappointed! The last time I came here, I sat at the bar, and it was a wonderful experience. Bartenders Willie, Tom, and Tiffany are absolute whiz kids, and super fun and personable. They really made the whole night, and I would recommend sitting at the bar if you can. Besides their sparkling personalities, all three can mix a mean drink, and you'll have plenty to choose from on the cocktail menu. They have an ample array of island-inspired drinks that would make Trader Vic proud, and I especially loved my Painkiller drink, which is a classic cocktail elevated to a whole new level when made by these talented bartenders! Ask for extra cream of coconut! As for the food, I've only tried an appetizer and dessert, but both were so incredible that I'm still dreaming about 'em days later! The Shishito Peppers were so good that I had to order seconds (!!!) They are roasted until tender, and topped with flaky sea salt. It's a very simple and healthy starter that won't fill you up before tacos, but is so very yummy! Order a side of the house made Baja Aioli for dipping if you really want to take this small plate over the top! Highly, highly recommend. We also got to try some of their homemade Churros, which are the best I've ever had in a restaurant! I am usually wary of fried desserts, but these are very light and tender, and served piping hot tossed in cinnamon sugar with a warm caramel sauce on the side for dipping. My best friend and I agreed that the caramel really made it! We were practically drinking it! While Diego's is definitely crowded during the summer, it's an ideal hangout in the off-season. In addition to the fun and friendly service, they also offer some great meal deals and specials to encourage locals to come out and take advantage. Tuesday is Nacho Night, with a slew of amazing offerings, including the Bon Mi Nachos, which I can't wait too try, and Thursday is Taco Thursday. The Sunday night pre-fixe Date Night menu is also a great deal, and includes an appetizer, two entrees, and choice of a few alcoholic beverages - all for $50. Can't beat that! They also have interactive trivia on Monday nights, and each team gets a complimentary plate of nachos for participating. You'll want to make Diego's your winter "night out" destination for sure! I know I'll definitely be back! read more

The food and drinks were great and our server was happy and worked extra hard to get drinks refilled frequently. Would recommend.

Came here on a Friday afternoon around 2:30pm, there was a wait and we had to split our group between two tables. Yes I'm that person and I order water. The water came in these silly little tin cups. I had to ask for more and the waitress brought be a bottle to refill it with. It definitely could have used ice. My sister ordered a beverage and it was super strong. She ended up not drinking it. The kids liked their nachos (although a little dry) and tacos. We ordered a pitcher of the pineapple margaritas and that was pretty good. My 5th ward salad was good and the seasoning on the grilled chicken I added to it was yum! My brother really liked his meal and so did my husband. (I'm not entirely sure what they ordered). The service was good once she got her feet under her and organized. Can't quite say these are as good as our Cali tacos- spoiler alert we just moved from SoCal to Newport- but they will do for the east coast! Edit to add- that bathroom light is so dim after being outside. I know you're trying to create an ambiance, but You need a little brighter bulb in there! read more

The food was good, but the prices were high for what we received. I suppose that has to do with the location. I ordered a side of guacamole and it was literally probably 1-2 Tablespoons of guac. Nice Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown Newport. I strongly recommend making a reservation due to the occupancy restrictions and popularity of the area. The nachos are a must try and all of their drinks seem great. I got the sangria and a strawberry majito which were good and the other peeps i was with loved the margaritas. For dinner I got the chicken enchiladas which were just average to be honest and had chunks of carrots in them which I wasn't a fan of. 3 stars for the food 4 for the drinks 4 for the ambience and service Overall: Fun experience! Dropped by for a late late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. They have indoor and outdoor seating and we opted to sit bar-side, which was fun. The place has some pretty funky decor with red string lighting and tons of candid polaroid photos all over the place. It's a fun place to come for a date night or with friends. Service was excellent. We tried one of their mezcals and their margarita. Both went down smoooothly. Got their 4 way salsa, which wasn't too great to be honest. The nachos were so-so and the dips were not as flavorful as the descriptions made them out to be. Would I go back? Yes - for the drinks and to try some of their other dishes. P.S. looks like they allow pets with the outdoor seating. read more

I swear I was ready to give this place 5 stars review BUT then I got my order(all my friends ordered their food and I was pretty impressed from what they ordered) I paid $25 for the 5th ward salad(and I add protein)..now here is the problem Why should I'll pay $25 for a salad that was literally smaller than McDonald's salads also was very plain so not sophisticated..I was disappointed I loved sitting outside and the music and vibe was nice Our Waiter was very polite and kind read more
