Diegos was a great option for vegan food in the heart of Newport. We sat upstairs at the bar - definitely the best seat in the house ! I loved the fresh nutmeg in my drink & silver fox drink. Unfortunately, I do have to take a star off as we were celebrating my friends birthday, and they forgot both her food & drink despite knowing it was a special occasion. We were all in a good mood talking to our bartender, it wasn't a big deal, but it was strange the food runners failed to bring her food out until we spoke up and same with her drink. So glad we choose to stop by Diego's after our mimosa boat ride during our first ever Newport trip . We didn't have a reservation but we were able to find seats by the bar , which was the best decision because the bar tender was very funny and made our time there so much fun . We tried the silver fox drink which was really good ( and strong ) I ended up getting the white sangria which was very good ! Highly recommend if you like sangria and fruit ! Then I ordered the empanadas which were really good as well ! All the food was delicious and cooked perfectly ! We visited Diego's during a trip to Newport and sat outside under the awning, which made for a pleasant atmosphere. One thing I really appreciated was that they offer a separate vegan menu. As someone who enjoys having plant-based options, I wish more restaurants did this. Unfortunately, the service was hit or miss. Our waiter was not very attentive, and on several occasions we had to rely on other waitresses to help us get his attention when we needed something. We started with two upgraded margaritas, a strawberry and a coconut. Both were delicious and probably the highlight of the meal. However, we noticed we were charged $1 more per drink than the menu listed, which was disappointing. We also ordered the Chips 4 Ways appetizer, which comes with four different salsas and chips. While everything tasted good, the portions were quite small. There weren't many chips, and each salsa appeared to be only about 2-3 ounces. For $13, it didn't feel like a great value. For our entrees, I ordered the vegan tofu tacos. They were okay, but the tofu was extremely chewy and seemed overcooked. My husband ordered the fajitas, which were tasty but surprisingly small for a $33 entrée. Overall, the food was decent and there were definitely some positives, especially the margaritas and the vegan menu options. However, between the inattentive service, small portions, and pricing, the experience didn't quite live up to expectations. During our first night in Newport, my husband and I made a reservation at Diego's. The first thing that stood out was the location -- the views of the harbor are absolutely beautiful, especially during sunset. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of our experience. We started with drinks: a peach margarita and a Painkiller. The peach margarita was honestly undrinkable. It tasted more like a glass of orange juice than a margarita. When I mentioned this to our server, Tommy, he said he would fix it and returned with what appeared to be the same drink with more peach added. The result was an extremely sugary drink that still wasn't enjoyable. Tommy then asked if he could try it, which was a strange request from a server. After taking it away, he returned and commented that it did taste like peach. That was never the issue -- the problem was that it was overwhelmingly sweet. We ordered the queso fundido as an appetizer, which was actually good. However, when Tommy checked on it and we said we liked it, he responded by joking, "It doesn't taste too much like orange juice?" The comment felt unnecessary and unprofessional, especially given the earlier drink situation. Another frustration was the pacing. Before we were even halfway finished with our appetizer, our entrees arrived. That is one of my biggest dining pet peeves because it makes the meal feel rushed. The drunken burrito I ordered was decent, but nothing memorable. My husband ordered the red snapper and really enjoyed his meal. While using the restroom, we both noticed it was not clean and there was even a plastic produce bag in the toilet, which was disappointing. As we were finishing our food, Tommy informed us that another party was waiting for our table and that we needed to leave. We had been there less than an hour and a half, which made the entire experience feel even more rushed. It's rare that I leave a negative review, but this visit was frustrating from start to finish. First, I want to start off with this new trend of Mexican restaurants not giving out chips and salsa. If you're a Mexican restaurant, I honestly don't understand this change in tradition. Now I'm getting charged for chips and salsa? WTF is that? I'm sorry, but I'm buying drinks and tequila--it's only going to make me thirstier! Furthermore, if you're going to put ceviche on the menu, chips should absolutely be included. That's how ceviche is traditionally eaten. But honestly, none of this was too surprising after I saw the manager roll out of bed in sweatpants to come down to the kitchen, as if she had been sleeping or was too busy in her office to be bothered. I've been coming here for over a decade, but after this experience, I won't be returning. There are plenty of other Mexican restaurants around, and I'm happy to give them my business instead. read more

We went to Diego's because they had a $15 nacho special on Thursdays. I got the pork belly nachos, which were pretty good. The pork belly was a little dry, but overall I enjoyed them. My dad got the Aji tuna nachos, which were good, but the portion was significantly less than the pork belly, which I found was funny overall I think the nachos were a good deal. The restaurant is beautiful and the servers were very nice. However, my mom's glass of wine was $17 so beware of that if you go. read more

The Silver Fox drink was soooo good - you would think it would be tart but it was so smooth. Very strong drinks too wowza. The food was incredible. Try Diego's Crack Fries - they were very tasty. My buffalo cauliflower burrito and his cali burrito were flavorful and made us full for sure. Prices very reasonable, even more so for a waterfront restaurant. The service was very good as well. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. We were seated at a table where water was actively dripping from the wall onto our table and even onto us. We have a video showing the water dripping, yet our concerns were completely ignored. We immediately informed the hostess and asked to be moved to another table, but she refused. We then spoke with the manager, expecting them to take the situation seriously. Instead, they showed no concern that water was dripping onto guests and made no effort to resolve the issue. Based on the way we were treated, I left feeling that we were treated differently because of our race. The staff dismissed our concerns, refused to move us despite the obvious problem, and showed no interest in resolving the situation. Whether or not that was their intent, that was how the experience felt to us. The fact that water was dripping onto our table and even touching us didn't seem to matter to the staff. No one apologized, offered another table, or attempted to make the situation right. I won't be returning. read more

Diego's totally blew us away. The menu is packed with fun, flavorful options and everything we ordered was seriously delicious. You can tell the kitchen puts a lot of love into the food. And the drinks? So good. Their cocktails are creative and super refreshing, we could've stayed just for those. The service was awesome too. Everyone was super friendly, quick, and made us feel really welcome. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable. Bonus points for the bathrooms being super clean, which isn't always the case at busy spots like this. It's got the perfect location, amazing interior, friendly service and of course an amazing menu that includes a separate full vegan menu. The four stars are only because we had drinks and did not eat when we visited. Our first stop in Newport was to Diego's. The restaurant had outdoor, indoor and an upper level seating. My party and I decided to sit at the upstairs bar and it was so fun. It gave the vibe of being in a treehouse. I don't like to leave negative reviews, but I just have to call it how it is. The food was extremely mediocre and the drinks weren't great either. We got the guac and chips to start with and the chips was stale and not very flavorful, and the guac needed salt and had almost no flavor. I was excited that they had so many vegan and vegetarian options as we had a good mix of both with us. But the food was just okay. Probably the least favorite meal we had during our entire vacation. Diego's was an excellent visit. The restaurant is located in touristy Bowens Wharf, very close to the water, and encompasses two floors. As we we were being led to the second floor, I noticed that the first floor, and even the ceiling, had hundreds of Polaroid pictures. I'm assuming they're from prior customers, but it looked really cool. Our booth, on the second floor, was very comfortable and had a beautiful view of the ships at Bowens Wharf. Our server, Daniel, was exceptional. He was attentive, helpful with recommendations, and made the entire meal very pleasant. I ordered a Standard Margarita and it was S.T.R.O.N.G. Thank goodness, that we walked for another hour through Bowens Wharf or else someone else would have driven back to NJ. TRY IT! All of the orders were on point. Each was flavorful, well seasoned, and at the perfect temperature to enjoy immediately: Chicken Tortilla Soup and Cali Burrito (Chicken tinga, crispy potatoes, pico de gallo, guacamole, slaw, Baja cheese, black beans, wrapped in a grilled flour tortilla). The sides were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed: Street Corn, Spanish rice & beans, Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Ponzu (Japanese citrus-based vinaigrette that's salty, sweet, and tangy) & Garlic. The service is absolutely terrible, as we had an "issue" with our IDs. Coming from out of state to celebrate during a bachelorette, we made reservations about a month prior and were only met with disappointment. 2 out of the 5 people at our table ordered drinks, and obviously showed ID. We got accused of having fake IDs and had to fill out liability paperwork. If that wasn't bad enough, the waitress who was not even serving our table was talking obviously about us and the situation (which shouldn't of been one to start, we were all 26+). We were crammed into a table and they should have easily brought over one or two more tables so we could have sat comfortably. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest. The food was ok. IMO- Diego's is a must visit restaurant in Newport if you like Mexican cuisine with fresh ingredients and unique twists! Tucked in the hub of the shops- with so many neat seating options from heated igloos, to upstairs and downstairs dining as well as bar seating- there is a spot for all! Open for lunch and dinner as well :) Tons of cool specialty cocktails to try but we opted for more typical ones with margaritas and sangria. Next time, we will be more adventurous with the cocktails we pick! However, we did love the ones we got! For food- we started with their special guacamole for the day which added pork belly- YUM-o! And the duck empanadas with duck gravy. I don't typically like empanadas (it's more my husband's thing) but he said I had to try these and I did- so good, so much flavor, a little heat, and the gravy- divine! We also got the fried chicken tacos- so many flavors, balanced well, chicken was juicy, just a real winner! It might sound funny but a place can easily get a taco wrong- Diego's does not and knows how to put equal parts of all the ingredients so you get each with a bite. No small feat! The barbacoa burrito was equally delicious it came with a side of house made lime pickles and a jalapeño puree dipping sauce- both so fresh and such a cool twist to add. It's unfortunate. I used to come here when it first opened and even years later. It is a former beacon of itself. Wait staff pretty terrible. No communication. Took 10 minutes (a real 10 minutes) to get water. Took so long we ate an app and entree before water and drinks were served. They then said the drink guns we're being cleaned which I don't doubt but they could have told us instead of making us wait. Also shrimp chimichurri tacos were very salty. I had a truly excellent meal as well as excellent service. My group sat upstairs at the outdoor bar, with fans going and a beautiful sunset, it was the perfect setting. The spicy marg was actually spicy, not sweet and syrupy and I enjoyed the salted rim. A Tajin rim would be the only improvement to be made. The bartender assisted me in deciding what I wanted to eat and our food came out quickly and with fresh ingredients and flavorful sauces. The hostess was very friendly and accommodating for our larger party. Our server was fine and our drinks came pretty quickly. We really enjoyed our cocktails but we were all glad we opted not order food beyond the queso. The queso came out and the cheese had obviously broke. Clear separation of cheese and oil resulting in a very unappetizing appearance. There's no way the kitchen nor the server thought that was what it should look like. We tried it and it was pretty gross so we didn't touch it after that. Our waiter either didn't notice or didn't care. We didn't make anything of it or ask for a refund. We've been wanting to try the Newport Diego's location for some time and finally got down to try it. We've tried the Middletown restaurant, and we've like it. The Providence location we've tried twice and were extremely disappointed. The ambiance is great, inside you have a view of some ships and the wharf. Outdoor seating you get to be in the hustle and bustle of Newport. In the summer reservations are an absolute must. They have a variety of gluten free options which is great. Drinks are disappointing, I would stick to a beer or wine and steer clear of mixed drinks. Food was ok, I got tacos. They tasted good, but not great. Overall I think this place has a wonderful location and average food. Picky eaters could find something they are happy with and location is nice. read more
