If you are craving amazing vegetarian or vegan food in Vienna, look no further. Judith (aka Die Kochdame) and her partner Lukas operate this comfortable little restaurant on Wiednerhauptstrasse, just a stone's throw from the Vienna Naschmarkt. Judith, who stems from a family of Heurigenwirte (her family ran a wine tavern in the province of Burgenland), turned her back on meat many years ago and decided to specialize in plant based cooking. Her philosophy is to offer only seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. She works with farmers from the Naschmarkt and has developed relationships with each of her suppliers.
Her menu rotates daily. When we ate at the Kochdame, we had a refreshing clear Carrot Fennel soup, followed by the "Daily inspiration" - Chanterelles with asparagus accompanied by mashed potatoes and spring onions with 2 salads. The flavors and freshness were amazing. My kids had Zucchini tomato pasta with feta crumbles, basil and pine nuts. For dessert we had a strawberry "scheiterhaufen" which was kind of like a little souffle that was excellent. We accompanied our meal with an excellent Rosé.
The restaurant is small, familial and the charming proprietors will keep you entertained. They are fluent in English and will point out some of the interesting, funky stores in the neighborhood that is less frequented by tourists. One of the highlights of our trip to Vienna. read more
