One Star - Discriminatory Treatment at Dick's Sporting Goods Batting Cage I visited the Dick's Sporting Goods location at Woodlands Mall on December 20, 2025, around 3:30 PM with my son to use the batting cage, a service we paid for. What should have been a positive experience turned into blatant discriminatory treatment by an older male employee (white hair, beard, thin build, appeared to be Hispanic) working the batting cage area. To be clear: anyone of any background can engage in discriminatory behavior, and that's exactly what happened here. When we entered the cage, it was already a mess with balls and bats scattered everywhere from the previous customers, a woman and her child whom this same employee had just been assisting. We didn't complain; we just started our paid session. While my son was batting, he accidentally made contact with the t-post. This employee shouted at him from across the store, "Hey, that's a $300 bat." Not a polite request to be careful. Not a conversation. A public reprimand from a distance, as if we couldn't afford to replace equipment or were being intentionally careless. When our time ended and we left the batting cage, he came up to me again and, full of sarcasm, he said, "Hey, baseball guy, can you go back in there and pick up all the balls?" The same mess that previous customers had left, which he had never asked them to clean, and which was already there when we arrived. I paid for a service, not a cleanup shift, but I didn't want to escalate in front of my child, so we complied. As we left, he made a sarcastic comment about being a "gentleman and a scholar": passive-aggressive condescension wrapped in polite words. Here's what I observed during the 40 minutes I was there: He watched us like a hawk the entire time we were in the store. He was pleasant and helpful with other customers who appeared to be white, including the woman whose child left the mess we were told to clean up. He stopped what he was doing specifically to police our behavior. This is textbook discriminatory treatment, the kind of microaggression that people of color experience regularly in retail spaces. I don't work for Dick's Sporting Goods. I was a paying customer trying to spend quality time with my son. Instead, we were surveilled, publicly reprimanded, and required to perform cleanup duties that other customers were not. To other customers of color: be aware of how you may be treated at this location. To management: Your employee's behavior on December 20, 2025, from approximately 3:30 to 4:10 PM was unprofessional, discriminatory, and created a hostile environment for my son and me. This employee made my son visibly uncomfortable, and you should consider yourselves fortunate I chose not to make a scene in your store. I don't anticipate corporate accountability, but I wanted this documented. read more

What can you say about Dicks? Since the pricing is similar at each location, I'll skip that point. Located in The Woodlands Mall, this location stands out for the following reasons: -Centrally located, their connecting parking lot is one of the most coveted at the Woodlands Mall. -This location remains clean, and staff is always readily available. -They have a huge selection including those you may not expect, like Free people movement. -They do a pretty good job representing most major sports. However, my favorite feature of the store is the restroom. While it's no fancier than your traditional Walmart restroom, it beats the general mall restroom and is always less populated. While this is not the only store in the woodlands mall with an independent restroom, it's the only one that allows me to use one and then purchase gear for all of my various sports, which is a score for me ...pun intended. read more

Great store with great selection but the cashier was very rude. I'm going to guess the cashiers name is Xotchil based on my receipt. I felt like I was being rushed through the transaction even though I only bought two items and there was only one person behind me in line. Don't buy shoes here unless you want to grow old by the time you get shoes that fit. Stopped here to get some new shoes and stood around for about 15 minutes waiting for the half dozen sales people to finally help me. They actually all disappeared for about 5 minutes then j finally accosted a sales person to help me. Then waited another 10 minutes for the two people working the back to call me with my shoes. All during this time the workers sat around complaining about each other. Finally got my shoes and they were not the size I asked for but the shoe runner was long gone by then. This store seems yo have gone for form over substance. Their selection was limited. Rather than have racks with choices they have opted for a "pretty" presentation, cutting down on selections. ADDITIONALLY, I received an email from Dick's with LOTS of sales items and choices that I know fit my arches. I could not find a single one of these at the store. The whole area is full of Dick's, but everyone seems to love Dick's, so it works out. Dick's is a very overpriced Sporting Goods store and some of the employees take after the name of the franchise. I come here whenever it's an emergency and I don't want to bother go looking around cheaper stores. They usually have the right stuff, like NKOTB did, but you usually get ripped off. I usually have a very average experience when shopping at this store, mostly for soccer cleats. The last time I shopped at Dick's (11/9/24 around 2pm) the store clerks were very helpful in providing shoes and cleats to try on, but I had to wait for almost 10 minutes before receiving any assistance. The prices were also a bit on the higher end. The cleats I was shopping for, Puma Future 7 Pro FG/AG, were priced $140 in store despite being available for $70 on amazon and the official Puma website as of December 2024. Always a long line and one cashier. Same in shoes - one person to help everyone. If you use a reward that you earned from prior purchases, then later return that item, they deduct the reward from your return and you just loose the reward - that is crap! What do you think the lease amount per month is on Dick's? It's two stories and the size of a department store. Tip: a lil phone case kiosk is $10,000 per month in this mall. Well my guess is very, very expensive. When you first walk in Dick's you see lovely young workers clustered together chatting at the register. What a relaxing sports store. Zero pressure, zero help. Maybe I should get a job here for health benefits. Just think no work and all play. This is my second visit to this lovely store with all the medium to high end brands mostly of sports attire. They also sell outdoors recreation items. I needed help a couple times but no one was available anywhere in sight. Maybe they should install an intercom system where customers could buzz the front register and plead one of the relaxed workers to come help them. Seriously though the stores biggest problem is no sales people in the different departments. Maybe they are trying to give service like Amazon. After all Amazon is very successful. Secondly the prices are high. I've seen quite a few of the middle priced lines of sportswear priced higher and lack of enough sales. Since my first visit I have purchased the same merchandise elsewhere for less. Really sad because there is so much more potential! I had to reorder some pants because Dicks sent me something other than what I ordered. I had to drive way out of my way to pick it up because this was the only store that had the size I needed. Anyway no big deal, we expect this kind of thing. On my way to pick up the pants I called ahead to make sure that a picture of my drivers license along with the email confirming the curbside pick up would be enough to pick up the pants I had already paid for. Whoever answered the phone told me that I would need my actual picture of my drivers license would not do even though I have a confirmation email. I got asked him to ask the manager so he went last manager the manager told us we needed to have the physical drivers license even though he knew it was a huge convenience to go all the way home to get the drivers license and then drive all the way to the woodlands. Anyway when we go we got a text message on the phone saying that our order is been confirmed and we would not need any drivers license or Id. Ha! I just wasted hour and a half of my time! I don't understand the negative reviews. If you want a weapon go to Academy or a gun store, or a pawn shop. This store is immaculate with an abundance selection of fitness gear and attire. Horrible management with nothing but kids running the store. It's unfortunate as they have the best products for athletes. I asked 2 different clerks for help. One of them ran from me giggling and the other told me they would be right back and never came back. When leaving the store, the be back person was in the parking lot, smoking. They need to completely dismantle the employees and start over. Plus the stores merchandising is confusing and dangerous if you bring the kids. Store needs some cleaning as they clothing laying on the floor and not just a few garments. I did get good help from the gentleman in the shoe department. But that's were it stops. I was recently in your store (first time) looking for tennis shoes and could not find them. I asked a sales person where they were and he showed me the two that you had out. He said that that wasn't all the tennis shoes that you had but they were in the back. I asked how I would know which ones I wanted in the back and he said I couldn't So I tried on a pair I picked out and went to the front to buy with a $20 coupon and they said it didn't work on that model. I did not buy them and it will be the last time at your store. Poor customer service! No sense of urgency at all! As if my time wasn't valuable at all! On a Tuesday at 5 pm I waited in line for almost 20 minutes to be checked out. Only one single register opened & about 15-20 ppl in line. The manager came and instead of helping in the check out area, he brought and inexperienced associate to help and made matters worse. The manager should've had put himself in a register to assist the single cashier. When I asked the cashier to request for more help her answer was; " sir I don't make the schedule around her". My 11 year old son is crushed. Thanks a lot Dick's. I must now say that this store is aptly named. My husband and son were instructed to be at the store, bright & early this morning to stand in line for a wristband in order to be able to come back later in the day to be able to meet Earl Campbell and get an autograph. They (and everyone else who showed up to wait in line for a wristband) were told that they should bring one item for Mr.Campbell to autograph when they come back at 3:30pm for the signing. Many people bought Oilers helmets and other pricey items that were (very conveniently) placed front and center just inside the store on an Earl Campbell shrine-like display. My husband and son waited anxiously (yet again) Oiler cap in hand, in a long, back-breaking line for Mr. Campbell to show up. Mr. Campbell arrived at 4:20. At 5:10, my guys finally made it to the table only to be told that Mr. Campbell would not be signing any items (items we were I instructed to bring, mind you) but instead would sign a cheap, blurry, "Dick's" branded "photo" card. They were told this after watching the first several lucky people who indeed walked away after getting their personal item signed (shoe, helmet etc.). Why lie to people, get their hopes up, make them wait and wait again only to let them down? Sounds like a bait & switch to me. And Dick's, you did this to children. Shame! Dicks is essentially the upscale version of Academy, and while some things are decent deals on sale, Academy has them beat. The nice thing about Dicks is the location if you're going to brave the mall. The store is decent size, two levels and fairly well lit and organized. Personally they waste space with all the various "workout" clothes...more than half the first floor is spandex! Nothing against it, but they could carry other things if they would reduce that section a bit. Team sports and shoes they have a good variety. Fishing and marine type items they're a bit lacking. If you're looking for hunting/firearms, don't waste your time coming here. They do have an in house bike shop, but really nothing but their overpriced house brand and a few lower end models of some better known brands...go to sun n ski or one of the. Bike shops around if you're looking for that. We came in looking for a specific winter sport item they happened to have for my wife. Other than that I'll probably reserve my visits for the few times a year I go to the mall and only look for sale items...everything else I can get at Academy cheaper. read more

Got shafted at the grand opening. Earl Campbell was there to sign autographs. waiting three hrs. we were not allowed to have have our items that were purchased at the store to be signed by Earl. Lots of stuff. Higher price than Academy, but sometimes convenience is worth it. But I HATE when stores lock dressing rooms and customers have to wait for sometime to come unlock them. I've had 5 minute waits. Most of the time, I'll walk away and this store loses a sale. If you're going to keep dressings rooms locked, then place a sales person right there to always be ready to unlock - don't make your customers wait. Awful store, ridiculous levels of bad. I even created an account just to express my opinion. Let's rewind to January of 2017. My first venture into the store resulted in me getting pestered by annoying cashiers who begged me to get a rewards card or else "they'd get in trouble", searching hours across the store to find an coworkers to assist me, and two friendly young retailers who got chewed out by their manager for helping me out, which she referred to as "doing nothing". The manager then walked past a worker casually texting on her phone asked her "what's up, girl?" So texting is hard work but actually doing your job isn't? You could read all about it on the DSG Facebook page, where I posted a lengthy review discussing my terrible experience...only to find my review, and several other negative reviews, deleted! So here I am again, on a site I know for sure my voice will stay protected... I went in my second time a month ago to buy workout clothes, I suppose in a desperate attempt to see if anything had changed. Somehow, it was even worse than before! The managers are extremely rude and condescending, talked down to me like I was stupid...that is, if they were actually helping me out. A hispanic female manager named Ruby ignored me after several minutes and when I finally got to her, I could tell she was very annoyed and clearly wanted to keep chatting with her employees. Not surprisingly, she was also the same manager that loudly chewed out the two young men for helping me out several months prior. No wonder she yelled at those two gentlemen, she thinks STANDING AROUND and CHATTING is the true definition of hard work! Another manager, a male who's name escaped me (I think Rupert or Rubin), came to "assist" me but did not help out, instead telling me what I already knew and leaving me alone, again. At this point, I should clarify that the store is practically vacant of workers. No matter how busy the day is, there never seem to be more than 2-3 retailers on the floor at once, sometimes even less. It's a ghost town. For a store this massive, that's ridiculous. I finally find a girl to assist me, but it's the girl who was texting from months before...and guess what? She's of no help and would rather focus on texting than assisting me! I asked where the two boys from last time were, and through smacks of bubble gum chewing and with her face glued to her iPhone, she tells me that they were long fired for not doing their jobs. I hope they found a place that respects them because they were the only two people in the entire store who knew what they were doing. I should probably get to the actual store. It's nice and modern looking, but the prices are abnormally expensive and the selection is laughably limited. I came in to buy a SHSU shirt because my nephew just got accepted there, and despite it being a major university only 15 minutes north, they had not a single SHSU item on sale! Oh, but they had plenty of LSU and Ole Miss stuff. But not of the local college? Give me a break. It might be better if the managers weren't all stuck up egotistical college grads just trying to make extra money. After the same awful experience twice in a row, I tried to complain to a manager named Tory about the experience, but instead of listening to me, she gave me all of these passive-aggresive stares like she was going to kill me. She even rolled her eyes and said "whatever you say" in a clearly agitated voice. Unbelievable. Never in my years of shopping have I EVER had a manager say that to my face. At that point I just gave up and walked away, never EVER to return. Overall, horrible experience. There's a hidden review on here claiming to be from an ex-employee of this location, saying the managers were dictators and chose favorites. I absolutely believe it. Nobody knew how to do their jobs and the managers were all fresh college grad ex-frat students. No management to be seen here, move along. Mel (Manager) is amazing in every aspect. Walked me through several options when buying 3 basketball sneakers for my kids. Called other stores to check size and color availability. Answered all my questions with no hesitation. I would highly recommend Mel and her team at Dick's The Woodlands Mall.
