This is a type of place that I'd expect to find on Route 66, not on Interstate 10. It has that dive charm, kind of like it's hanging on by a thread. But don't let its look fool you. Dicks is thriving. It has a steady stream of locals, and a few of us tourists giving them plenty of business. Their food of course is driving its success. The servers don't hurt the popularity either. They're on top of their game, and with a smile. The menu sports both American and Mexican fare. They even had bbq muddling up the decision. Bar-B-Q in New Mexico? Hmmm... who knew? Seeing how I'll be in the Tennessee motherland soon, where bbq is an art, I decided to leave that option to the less fortunate. The green chili cheeseburger is what I settled on. Nice choice Alex J. You done good, cause good it was. The burger was thick, juicy and it came with all the fixings. What made the thing fantastic was the green chili. It's kind of like a relish. Extremely flavorful. Check out the picture. I pulled the cheese back so you can see it. Smart move capping the chili with the cheese. It holds it in place. Well, almost. There'll be some dripage, which is cool. It'll drip right on to the fresh cut fries. Oh, get the fries instead of the chips. Drenched fries are much better than limp chips. Quick Tip: Keep an eye out for a stray fly (thus the dive charm moniker) They're hungry too. I caught one sniffing around my chili drips. But I wasn't about to let it munch on any of that green gold. I brushed it away and it flew over to some other plate. Probably wanted to get a taste of some of that New Mexico BBQ.

Dick's Cafe: the fries were burned and tasted like they were fried in old oil. There is no excuse for putting them on a plate. Terrible.

After a number of years I decided to give Dick's Cafe another try. I was a little hesitant considering some recent reviews but what the heck; let's go for it. I did want to once again try their green chile cheeseburger and despite previous experience with greasy fries I decided to give them another shot also. With only one young lady waiting tables out front of the house it took seven or eight minutes to be greeted and given a menu. The restaurant was moderately busy with the average customer being age 45 to 75 years old and most wearing baseball-style caps. There were a lot of tables, a few booths, and a counter with bar stools. The overworked waitress was responsible for everything, yet, she remained pleasant and did a good job. After ordering she brought a basket of chips and some salsa to the table with my drink. The chips were pretty good and rate a "B" or "B+." The salsa was somewhat thick and was the classic Las Cruces salsa. It was a little high on the heat scale. Rate it a "B" to a "B+." The burger and fries arrived within about twelve minutes or so. The burger's sesame seed bun was toasted on the grill and had a nice flavor and texture. The lettuce and tomato and pickles were fine. The meal included some little packets of mayo and mustard if I wanted to use them. There was not a lot of green chile on the burger...a bit of a disappointment. The burger patties were hefty and thick. They were a bit dry and WAY UNDER SEASONED. This was a bland burger. Overall, this was a "C+" burger or perhaps a "B-" burger...not terrible but not really good either. The fries, oh those fries! They were presented on the plate DRY AND BURNED. I tasted a few and they tasted like they were cooked in old oil which might explain the burned and dried out condition they were in. These fries were COMPLETELY INEDIBLE. Rate them an "F." It is unbelievable that Dick's cooks could put such fries on a customer's plate. They were the worst fries I've ever had. For today's dining experience rate Dick's around Two and a Half Stars....meaning below average. I think I've been to Dick's Cafe for the last time. I still can't believe they served those atrocious fries to a customer.

This used to be the bun of my burger. What a lump of yuk.

Not much good to like tonight at Dick's Cafe in Las Cruces, NM on 11/10/23 at 5:00ish. I ordered a hamburger, well done, with green chili, bacon, to include the usual veggies and mustard, fries. What I got... My burger patty was supposed to have been well done but was medium rare, clearly pink and soaked with some juicy stuff. The mustard was at least 1-tablespoon, or a bit more (see pic below), loaded onto the top bun. The green chili was full of juice - what is that about... By the time I picked the burger up, the bottom bun was mush. I asked for a dry bun. When it arrived, the other half of the bun was soggy so I simply discarded the soggy dough and ate what I could of a now open faced burger, half raw. The fries smell of old oil. The bacon didn't taste like bacon, more foreign than just "off"... but it did look like bacon. So what was good about Dick's? The nostalgia of it still existing. A very good a patient server who I still tipped because she did well and it wasn't her fault that the kitchen staff didn't cut the mustard. Another server made sure my table was wiped clean and made sure I had a good tall glass of water. Salsa was great. The chips... no so much. Soggy, poor flavor. The attached pic is what was supposed to be the buns my burger was served on. Instead, the bottom was soggy and mushy, and the top loaded with "a ton" of very wet mustard. No Gem, but a sorry jam of mushy bread. Again, service was great.

Just your average run of the mill greasy spoon type place. The service was minimal with a decent salad and green chili burger. Everything was prepped and cooked well but lacked much flavor. Will probably stop by every now and then because it's close to campus and wanting a beer.

Don't eat here. I should end the review there. But because I take Yelp kinda serious I'll explain why. You get complimentary chips and salsa. But the chips were stale and the salsa lacked any heat. The side salad we both got with our meal had HUGE pieces of lettuce with some really sad and wilted and old lettuce hidden under them. Seriously take the slimy greens out of the lettuce bin already. I had been wanting to try the chicken fried steak since a co-worker told me this place had a decent one. It wasn't over breaded and it wasn't cooked to rocklike consistency. But it was also some previously frozen piece of prebreaded meat less than a half inch thick. The gravy had no flavor. Seriously...none. And it came with fries instead of mashed taters. The fries were okay. When the wife saw the steak prices she decided it was a good deal and tried to order the T-Bone. Sold out. So the rib eye. Sold out. Ok...how about the 16 oz Top Sirloin. They have it! Yay! She ordered it medium rare...almost mooing. It came out no where near a 16 oz steak. No where near a top sirloin and well done. It was almost too tough to eat. She asked for some A-1 to make it edible. They didn't have that either. So Heinz 57 rescued the shoe leather. This was the worst meal I've had out in a long time. Our server was very sweet though. It gets an extra star because the place has huge mugs of beer for $5.50 and some decent beers on tap.

Dick's Cafe Salsa (to buy at the restaurant)

Dick's is a hidden gem that has the best green chili cheeseburgers in Las Cruces. The hamburger meat is the most tender and juicy I have ever eaten before. The atmosphere is a classic diner establishment (like Back to the Future movie but a slightly updated look). The staff are all friendly so while you are waiting there is a jukebox to play music or you can sit outside and eat the free chips and salsa. They jar their own fresh salsa which has a great little kick of heat and a jar is $5. They serve breakfast, Mexican, and American Diner food. Highly recommended giving this restaurant a try, and the salsa makes perfect gifts for family or friends!

    Welcome to Dick's.

No frills, local breakfast was what we were looking for and that's what we got. My omelet was buried in green chilies...way too many to eat. Friendly waitress and endless coffee refills. Unfortunately, I'm a tea drinker and they were out of tea.

I have always gone to Dicks for their burgers but this time I went to try something different. The place was pretty empty for a Thursday after lunch. We got to our booth and received their complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered a queso (which came in a very small dish, smaller than I remember) but went down so fast I didn't get a pic in. LOL! I had the mexican plate with two green cheese enchiladas, green chile, rice n beans. The enchiladas were sub par. Nothing to rave over. The chile verde though was the star of the show. It tasted like abuelita in some pueblo had it slowly simmering for hours on her wood stove. All the right flavors were there. The meat was so tender and juicy. The Hatch chiles were chunky and clearly vying for center stage. If you like spicy, that day was the day it came out spicy (as the waitress said). Hubs ordered a wet christmas burrito, half red half green. The burrito was of a substantial size and had the same filling my chile verde was made out of. He really enjoyed it and said the smokiness of the red calmed the fire of the green chile. . I almost didnt mind not ordering my usual double Hatch green chile cheeseburger. Almost-being the operative word because the patron beside us ordered it and the smell was amazing. Overall, a good late lunch.

Let's get to the meat, brisket was very good, the pulled pork was juicy. Coleslaw was mayo based not vinegar based. The potato salad and creamed corn stole the show. So good! Beans were good too. Inside was large picnic tables and a country store vibe. As always we ask would we go back? "Meh, idk" was Amanda's answer. We may try another location before going back.
