Couldn't choose no stars or I would have…read more I was having brake issues, so I posted on a neighborhood page in FB to see if anyone could recommend a local garage that was reasonable (the dealer wanted $1000). I got several recommendations, but I also got a message from a guy who seemed sympathetic and said that $1000 was way too much. He told me he had a garage and could do the work right away. That should have been a sign. I talked to him on the phone, and we talked details of the job. Bottom line was that it would be between $200 and $300 if I didn't need rotors. I wasn't feeling any vibration, it was just rubbing, so I figured I wouldn't need rotors. He was reasonable on the prices he quoted for pads, so I figured he'd be reasonable if I needed rotors too. When his mechanic looked at the brakes, he said I only needed 2 rotors. Good news. I figured it would be another $150 for the rotors. When the job was finished, I was presented with a bill for almost $700. The owner wasn't there, so I had to pay to leave. I contacted him to let him know that I wasn't happy. He said that I must have misunderstood the prices he quoted. I pointed out that if he had replaced all the rotors (like the dealer was going to do) and used OEM parts (like the dealer was going to do) his bill would have been over $1000, which he had originally agreed was way too much. Meanwhile, I had to have new tires installed and the tire company had to replace all of the lug nuts on my car (at a cost of $200) because the mechanic who did the brakes had not put the lug nuts back on properly. You need to use a torque wrench, which the owner said was used. (I was sitting outside the garage while the work was being done and the mechanic was using a regular impact gun.) He also said that the lug nut problem was caused by the tire company not knowing how to remove them properly. After a couple of conversations with the owner, it was obvious he wasn't going to accept any responsibility for any of the issues he and his mechanic caused. He offered me a free oil change. No way will I trust this garage to do any work on my car!

Fast forward to the day before New Year's EVE and I break down in Boston on the interstate, car shaking violently out of control. Took it to a different shop and they told me there was NO WAY they were changed, they were clearly old. Called McKay's back and the best they could offer was to maybe refund the parts. Told them there was no way I was driving back to Boston for garbage spark plugs and they refused to help me since. They did not touch my car while they had it, I even picked it up in the exact same parking spot that I left it in. AVOID THIS BUSINESS AT ALL COSTS. They will 100% steal your money if you are going in just for maintenance. I will be filing a charge back with my bank.

It turns out I needed a lot of brake work, as well as a few other things to the exhaust. It wasn't cheap by any stretch but Mike was always honest on the phone and we talked through different options. His estimate seemed reasonable, and he was actually able to save some parts which reduced the cost. Who likes a large car repair bill? Not me. But, if I had to describe this place in one word it would be "honest". I never got the impression that they were upselling me anything, and they were always available to talk on the phone. I just wish they were located closer to my house.

I left with the custom shop referral and a replaced blown fuse, no charge. I'll be back because they sell the brand of tires I use (Continental) and they have a very comfortable waiting room area where you can watch old Andy Griffith reruns!

I love my car so much, and if I can get a few more years our of it, I'd be happy. She said they're great, reasonably priced, and do not try to swindle their customers with unnecessary repairs. So I decided to check them out. Upon entering, I was greeted by the nicest receptionist I may have ever met. She had a great smile, was friendly, and was professional but still laid back. I explained what I needed, which included looking at why my engine light was on, check my shocks (because my car made very loud noises with every little bump in the road), and anything else they could find. Then I wanted an estimate and we'd discuss next steps. Made an appointment for the upcoming Thursday, left my car overnight, keys in the Dropbox, and they'd look at it in the morning. Got the estimate a few days later than anticipated, because the mechanic is always SUPER busy, then scheduled a pickup. Turned out that I needed new tires (which was not a surprise), my shocks were dead (hence the loud banging whenever I drove over a little bump), and my heater was on the fritz (the engine light). Spoke to the mechanic, and he said he could have my car ready by the following evening. So I said let's do all work as a holiday treat to myself. Picked up my car after work the following day, met up with the mechanic, and he went over everything with me. To my surprise, and due to an error, they even did a little extra work and didn't charge me for it! When I drove my car home, it felt like it was brand new, and if it wasn't for my "dog blankets" protecting my car seats, I would think that I just drove it off the sales lot. Overall, Auto Solutions is a place I will continue to go back to. The professionalism mixed with a laid-back personal approach, really made me feel at ease. Not charging me for some extra work that was done was a very nice holiday gift from them, and I am very grateful. Be fair warned, if you are a type A personality, and need everything quickly laid out in front of you, in a very specific time frame, they may not be your first choice. But if you have a little time on your hands, I will always highly recommend them.
