Dr Cheung has always provided excellent care. She is thorough and caring, and one of the best endocrinologists in the area.

I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Dianne Cheung based on a referral from my primary care physician at UCLA. Unfortunately, her office cancelled and rescheduled the appointment twice without offering any explanation or asking me for my input. Each time, I received a brief and impersonal message simply informing me of the change. On the day of the rescheduled appointment, after waiting six months and experiencing two unclarified cancellations, I made the drive from Westwood to the clinic. Despite allowing ample time, I was significantly delayed by unanticipated traffic on the 405 Freeway. I immediately called the contact number provided to notify UCLA Health of the delay. I was told my message would be noted. After a 2.5-hour drive, I arrived 30 minutes late--having notified the office in advance--only to be told Dr. Cheung would not see me. The front desk staff informed me that the individual who said it was acceptable for me to arrive late was not part of their office but rather UCLA Health's general support staff. While I respect the need for boundaries around scheduling, I expressed that this internal communication breakdown should not result in a patient being penalized--especially after prior cancellations on your part. There was only one patient in the waiting area, yet I was told Dr. Cheung was unavailable and that the next available appointment would be five months later. This experience left me deeply disappointed--not only in the lack of accountability, but in the absence of basic compassion and consideration for a patient's effort, time, and well-being. Dr. Cheung, if this message reaches you, I sincerely invite you to reflect on whether these actions align with the values of empathy and service that guide the medical profession. read more

Dr Cheung is great! I'm concerned she's only going to do research because she sick of the crybaby patients that don't listen to her I've seen it firsthand with my own friend! She's very smart. She's all about looking for cancer, and/or keeping her patients healthy but doesn't waste time.... Especially her own Most of her work is diabetes (which is not my problem) but how can you continue to work with people that just won't listen!!! I get it. Dr Cheung is book smart and lacks patient skills. She only accepts Medicare, PPO, and cash. She charges $858.00 for an established patient visit, which is outrageous. Just her looking at vitals and labs and refilling medication. I've been treated by doctors from all over, and none charge anywhere near this for the same visit. Most doctors charge $250. Insurance pays $139. The patient is stuck paying what she charges if their insurance denies the claim. I've been her patient for 12 years and agree with the 2-3 star reviews. read more

Dr Cheung is fantastic. Being a patient of hers for so long there isn't anybody I'd trust more than her. She makes suggestions on my check ups that I take very seriously. I have never doubted anything she has said and have the utmost confidence in her. If it's something out of her spectrum of expertise she will refer you to somebody else. read more

Charge full office visit for doing nothing. Disrespect for patient time & effort, I need to see an endocrinologist to follow up with non/ diabetic issues, I had clearly explained to receptionist when made appointments, On the dat of consultation. Dr Zcheung told me she only treated diabetes & referred me to another primary care physician, but she still charged me full office visit. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Cheung for almost 8 years now for Hashimoto's and my experience with her has always been great. After searching for the right endocrinologist for years, I feel lucky to have found her. She's extremely knowledgeable and discusses the whole person, not just the thyroid, for example providing nutritional info (like avoiding gluten), and which supplements to take as a vegan, etc. She's also referred me to a wonderful primary care physician and when I was sick, a great pulmonologist. We have very open communication - for example, I'll sometimes ask her about recent studies I've read, and she's always happy to discuss the pros and cons. I've also found her care and follow up to be top notch - when I had to have a nodule biopsied a couple of years ago, she took the least invasive approach and called me herself the moment she received the results. I was referred to Dr. Cheung by my primary care physician. I was a little hesitant before my first appointment after reading her less than positive YELP reviews but my experience has been very positive. I've see her every 6 months for monitoring for over 2 years. I rarely wait long to see her, she always asks how I'm doing, she always answers all of my questions and gives me the time I need. She has never recommended unnecessary tests, medicine or pushed surgery. In fact, the opposite is true. I feel confident in the medical advice that I have received from Dr. Cheung. She treats me like a person and not just a patient. I couldn't disagree more with her negative reviews. Sometimes, it takes a while to get an appointment. This is not always the case as I called today and could have had an appointment for this Monday.This is true for many specialists so I don't think that this a negative for Dr. Cheung. I love dr Cheung. She is thorough and one of those doctors that honestly seems to remember you. I hadn't seen her in two years and she remembered me, or at least did a heck of a job convincing me she did she explains things clearly, and patiently, and always personally calls you which I appreciate. She is overly cautious to run tests which I appreciate, because tests are easy and can detect diseases early. I was saddened to see all these bad reviews about her. On my initial visit, I thought she was awesome. She was a new physician at the practice, so obviously, she was using her best bedside manner. Oh how quickly things changed after the second visit and it was worse after the third. On my last and final visit there, I overheard her down the hall talking smack about another patient to one of her staff members---she didn't want to be bothered by her patient's problems apparently. I don't care how annoyed you are with certain patients, shut your mouth lady! Completely unacceptable. Would never recommend her. read more

I was recommended by Dr. Cheung to have surgery on a small nodule on my thyroid that had an inconclusive biopsy and was giving me temporary hyperthyroid symptoms. I asked to wait and see to if the symptoms go away with medication and if we could monitor the nodule to see if it grows. Both UCLA and Dr. Cheung continued to recommend surgery and dismissed my concerns. I finally got a third opinion from City of Hope. They said I should of come to them first because my nodule in my thyroid was too small to have surgery and suggested just monitoring to see if it grow. City of Hope also preformed a biopsy with a new Affirma FNA anaylisis. The test came back negative. (I asked Dr. Cheung and UCLA about Affirma FNA Anayliss and they said they do not perform that - convenient for them because it means less surgeries for UCLA to perform). Two years later I have no Hyper/Hypo thyroidism, I have not taken medication in 2 years and my nodule has remained the same. I can't imagine that If I did not question them I would be without a thyroid and on lifelong medication. This is just my story, someone else may have different results, my only suggestion is do your research and go with a second or third opinion. Lastly the billing department when she was was with South Bay Endocrine is terrible. They billed for days I did not have an appointment and I keep getting bills that have been paid a year ago! read more

When I first started seeing Dr. Cheung, I actually had a GOOD experience. She diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism and PCOS, and started me on medications pretty quickly. Unfortunately, it has been downhill from that point. Over the course of the past couple of years, I have felt less like a patient and more like an annoyance. Especially since the switch over to UCLA Health! There have been issues with billing and finding places to get my blood drawn, but those are not my main complaints. Whenever I see Dr. Cheung, she makes me feel like I am wasting her time. She asks me questions about my health, but brushes off my answers. If I have questions, she treats me either like I am personally offending her, or that I am a complete imbecile. Her responses are usually terse and do not allay my worries. I want to feel comfortable asking genuine questions or expressing concerns about my health. It has gotten to the point where making appointments is a waste of my time, because all she does is rush me out of the office with the same prescription. I honestly don't know if she has helped my health--I feel about the same, and I just have to take her word for it that my body is doing the right things. I have finally decided to look elsewhere for a new endocrinologist, to get a second opinion on my conditions and, hopefully, to feel like a patient being cared for rather than a nuisance being dealt with. read more

This is a Doctor that continuously changed my meds causing things to never become successful. Would recommend searching for another Doctor. In fact Her follow up is nil. She is not as professional as UCLA states. In fact i feel she was not concern toward my health. I was just a test case. I'm new in the area of Torrance and they just found that I have my thyroids values a little bit high, so I had to start looking for an Endocrinologist. I have to say that I'm a very curious person, so before every appointment I try to read and understand what is that I have so I can ask all my questions to the doctors. I like to be informed and I do not like to be given medicine just because it's what everyone does. So I went to a couple of doctors and I did not like anyone, they all wanted to give me the medication right away and no one would explain me anything. One Endocrinologist sent me to do a ultrasound and it also showed that I have some small nodules. I felt so frustrated because I have high thyroid levels, thyroid nodules and no doctor that I like to treat me. I went back to my family doctor (that I really like ans trust) and explain him that I did not want to take the medice because I thought I did not need it (from what I have read) and that I did not find any specialist that I liked. He sent me to Dr. Cheung and she was it! What I loved about Dr. Cheung was that she entered the room talked to me to find out where I was from, how many years I have lived here in the US, etc and explained me that she wanted to know all that information because depending on where you grew up could influence in the thyroids because of the amount of hormons that different countries use in their foods and the amount of Iron (I think she said Iron) that it's in the water, etc. She also told me that my thyroids levels where not that high and that if I was under 10 (that I am) she does not recommend to give medication with some exceptions. I'M NOT TRYING TO GIVE ANY MEDICAL ADVICE, I'm just telling my experience. Also she did another ultrasound to check on my nodules and it's great because she does them herself, so she can really see what is going on and does not base her opinion on what some lab person saw and took the image and another person evaluated for her. I found that to be amazing! By looking my thyroid glands in the computer she was able to see that I actually did not have any nodules, but I had some bumps on my glands caused by the Hashimoto desease. After talking a little bit of family history and actually seeing my labs she recommended me to take the medication. I left the office with all my questions responded and a sample of the medication that I started taking the next day. I'm really happy that I found Dr. Cheung and I really recommend her. My wife and I were Dr Chueng"s patients. Dr Chueng is an excellent doctor and if there were rating stars of antyamount, I WOULD RATE HER THE HIGHEST ! The problem came when the male office manager blocked us from seeing Dr Chueng saying that we did not make the co-payments when we had. There was an outstanding balance because they forgot to bill medicare !! I lost out on being treated by one of the finest, caring doctors because of his error !! Be sure you don't get shortchanged by this office manager, I have been with an endocrinologist since. It has taken me over 2 years to sound off against the office manager.....I am disappointed that this man was not a good office manager and I am deprived of having Dr Chueng as one of my doctors and my wife is also disappointed. read more

I was very disappointed to find Dr. Cheung a highly unacceptable match for me. I have two growths on my thyroid. She told me that I needed to have them out and the sooner the better. She sent me to a local surgeon, who took a look at the report and asked me why I'd made an appointment. I DID NOT need surgery. Dr. Cheung counseled me the exact opposite as her report stated. She took the surgeon's time, my time and money for a surgical appointment when there was NO reason. I have since gone to another doctor who is monitoring the situation in a very smart way. read more

This doctor is no longer with South Bay Endocrine Associates. She is with UCLA Health Systems now. The practice changing name and moving, which was never mentioned. I received a call a few days before my appointment instructing me that I would see new doctor at the new location. Still no mention that practice changed name. I never would have found office without suite number. Front office staff was cold and handed me a packet of forms to complete upon arrival. Wait was short since office was empty except for staff. My tests results were not there since lab was unaware of change. None of my medical records were there either. Doctor's assistant was warm, kind, etc. Wait in exam room was very long. New doctor was nice, jotted notes on piece of paper on clip board and left me sitting in room for long period during her absence. Appointment which usually takes 20 minutes, took an hour that day. Afterwards, cold receptionist instructed me to pick a doctor to see for next appointment. I have been with Dr. Cheung for years and since new doctor was only filling in while she was on leave, her question was a shocker. I replied, I don't know with tears in my eyes and given an appointment with Dr Cheung, which I cancelled. I agree with VR's review. Initial visit with Dr. Cheung at South Bay Endo Associates was great. Treatment declined with subsequent visits and hit all time low in December at UCLA Health Systems. read more

Wow, wow, wow. I wish I could give her less than 1 star. I have NEVER been treated so poorly by a doctor. I was referred to her by another doctor because Cheung is SUPPOSED to be the best. Boy was she wrong! My first appointment with her she was late by 35 minutes and walked in and did not apologize at all (It should be noted that I had already had to wait over a month for this appointment). She said hello to me and ignored my mother who I brought along for support. Since this is was my first time meeting with her, I thought she would ask me a few facts about myself, nothing too extensive but at least get to know me a bit (a question or two would be fine). She instead dove right in and began talking way above my head. I am an intelligent person pursing a degree in the health care field, but I was even confused by some of the facts she was throwing at me regarding my PCOS diagnosis. I strongly believe what makes a good doctor is not solely your impressive résumé but ALSO your beside manners. Cheung definitely has an impressive résumé but she needs a lesson in how to talk to patients. I suggested something to help manage one of the symptoms of my PCOS and she completely for lack of a better way to put it, ripped me a new one. I have never been spoken to so rudely. She truly did make it seem like I had personally offended her when I suggested a strategy to help manage my weight that my mom had recommended. She told me that she wouldn't bother putting me on the medicine she was going to prescribe if I was going to use the weight loss supplement I mentioned, that I should go see another Dr. if I wanted to, that my OBGYN would have been pissed if she had heard this, proceeded to lecture me on why she hates the supplement, told me not to have my mom call because she wouldn't talk to her at all, and that the supplement might work for someone who is post-menopausal and no longer has working ovaries like my mother (My mother is 45, not menopausal at all, how rude!). Had I known she was going to react this way, I would have never brought it up. I honestly was just curious about the product and wanted her opinion. I wasn't demanding that I was going to use it, I haven't even bought the product, it was just something we had come across that had seemingly worked for other women. I just sat there listening to her in disbelief, I didn't even know that doctors were allowed to talk to you in this manner. My own parents have never even yelled at me in this manner even at the height of their anger. Doctors supposed to be the ones you can turn to if you have questions, not the ones who are going to turn you away and make you ashamed for asking a question about YOUR OWN PERSONAL health and well being. I honestly think this doctor has become way too cocky since she joined UCLA Health and now owns this torrance practice. I understand that her background is impressive and you might still want to visit her, but I hope you take heed and realize that there are other doctors out there just as good as her that will not belittle you, talk over you, rush you off the phone or out of her office, or yell at you. I will be finding a new endocrinologist ASAP. read more
