It's got a walking trail around the park and it does have shade canopies. There are a few benches and there are also 2 tables. My kids instantly ran over to the zip line, which is pretty popular with all the kids - everyone formed a line and took turns. They have a couple of kiddie slides, and a few saucer swings, but no regular swings. They do have a little "hill" that the kids loved to run up and down, and a couple of rope carousels, and net climbers.

The new City of Sunrise Veterans Park honors the U.S. Military with an elevated memorial monument. The parking lot has designated spaces reserved exclusively for combat-wounded veterans. Next to the memorial is a labyrinth, an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness combining the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have a long history as meditation and prayer tools in memorials. Veterans Park also has paved walkways, a remembrance pavilion, picnic tables, benches, a restroom, and a boundless playground with a zip line, netted spinner, net and slide climber, spinning spinner, swings, rope pyramid climber, embankment slide and rope climber. The grand opening of the park will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 9 am to 12 pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 am followed by a free BBQ lunch. The first 200 attendees will receive a commemorative coin and T-shirt. Parking for the event will be available at the Faith Center, located at 5555 NW 95th Avenue. You can walk over to Veterans Park or ride the free shuttle.

The Driftwood neighborhood in northwest Hollywood is a middle income community with single family homes and apartment complexes ranging in age from the 1940's to the 1990's. Bicentennial Park has a number of great amenities. It is a beautiful setting for children to play on the shaded playground that has climbing structures and a slide. The playground area also has a swing set for toddlers and older children. Other park features include a lighted walking and fitness trail with exercise stations, benches, a half basketball court, and restrooms. I loved the large trees that add to the serenity of the park and which provide homes for birds and squirrels. It is very pretty here and Bicentennial provides a valuable recreational resource to the Driftwood community.

As I was walking for exercise I enjoyed the antics of the neighborhood squirrels who all had big personalities. Large shade trees and beautiful landscaping throughout the park make you feel removed from the urban hustle and bustle of the surrounding neighborhood. Zinkil Park was named in honor of William G. Zinkil (April 14, 1919 - 2011). Zinkil was born in Chicago, Illinois and in 1925 moved to Hollywood, Florida where he became the first elected mayor of the city. He went on to serve as a Democratic member for the 85th district of the Florida House of Representatives. In 1970, Zinkil was elected to represent the 85th district of the Florida House of Representatives where he served until 1972. That same year he was elected to represent the 32nd district of the Florida Senate where he served until 1978. The Zinkil's are a prominent Hollywood family and they donated the land for the park.

Later James became the principal of the two-room Hallandale Community School from 1920 to 1927. In the 1950s, it became the B.F. James Elementary School, then later the B.F. James Adult Education Center. Today BF James Park sits on the site of the city's first black school. In 2014 the community gave feedback to the city that they wanted a pool. The pool and park is part of Hallandale Beach's Citywide Parks Master plan. It was the second city park to be completed in the first phase of the plan. BF James Park received a five million dollar complex that includes a beach style swimming pool with exercise lanes. Other park amenities added included exercise stations, a covered playground, and two new basketball courts. The building of this park fulfilled a 40 year old promise the city made to this community to provide a pool after the old Dixie pool fell into a state of disrepair. It is nice to see that the city of Hallandale Beach honored their commitment to this neighborhood with this beautiful park.

Went on a hike with my kids and discovered this hidden gem…read more Battle of Pine Island Ridge was a battle during the Second Seminole War fought on March 22, 1838, at the site of Pine Island Ridge in South Florida. U.S. troops under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Bankhead and Major William Lauderdale attacked a large Seminole village on top of Pine Island Ridge, an island in the Everglades at the time. The village was headed by Abiaka, who had recently become the principal chief of the Seminole Indians. As the U.S. troops approached the village, they were fired upon by Seminole warriors perched in the trees on Pine Island Ridge, who held off the U.S. troops long enough for Abiaka and the other villagers to escape. The attack ended in failure for the U.S. troops as they failed to kill or capture any of the Seminoles, who successfully evacuated their village without casualties. The battle was the closest the United States came to catching Abiaka during the Seminole After repulsing Zachary Taylor's army at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, the Seminoles under the leadership of Chief Abiaka relocated south to Broward County. Abiaka and his people then built a large village on top of Pine Island Ridge, which is 29 feet above sea-level and the highest point in Broward County. A Seminole traitor named Billy Benefactor told the U.S. Military about the location of the village, and that it contained up to 100 warriors. General Thomas Jesup then ordered an operation to attack Pine Island Ridge. Jesup assigned the operation to Federal soldiers of the 3rd Artillery Regiment under James Bankhead, and volunteers of the Tennessee Militia under William Lauderdale.

You can access this natural area from any of the neighborhoods that have been built around it or from Tree Tops Park.

While it's not a huge area, it is perfectly sized and quaint with well-lit waterfront sections that even has a few benches and some ornate statues with historical importance all throughout. It's only a block or so away from the strip with all the dining and shopping options you'd like yet it's tucked away in the corner where there's plenty of parking across the park. It's a nice stroll. My favorite part is the corner of Tarpon & Tarpon just a few steps away from the park with the beautiful tree-lined bend proving that Broward ain't so vanilla after all. It's a nice escape from the Miami bustle & the breeze is always blowing even in the peak of summer so switching up your dog walking routine and coming here is certainly a sight for sore eyes.

This particular park is open from sunrise to sunset. While small at only one acre, it is still enjoyable for taking kids out to play. There is a small shade covered playground with a slide, climbing equipment, and swings. There are also shade trees, benches, a picnic table, and open space. There is no dedicated parking or restrooms. An important point to note is that it is not fenced in, so you have to keep an eye on children to make sure they don't wander off. It ended up being the perfect place to sit for a few minutes while I planned my next destination. If you're looking for a larger park with more recreational amenities, I recommend nearby Brian Piccolo Park. If you're looking for a nature walk, Wolf Lake Park is also close by.
