10/10 stars if I could give them. Ben, Cortney, Martina, and Josh and the rest of the team are so beyond incredible at Devotion to Dogs. Our little Gizmo, a 2-year old Shih Tzu, came in for some behavioral and obedience challenges, and was horrible at recall. The whole staff not only made Gizmo feel at ease, and got him to actually recall back to us in less than a week of Board & Train, but now he no longer dashes through doors, is polite and kind to anyone who comes in contact with him, and his collapsed trachea (which he has had since birth) has greatly improved due to his body being better regulated! He is also having the best time with his at home doggy treadmill (which has been the best especially living in an apartment), and new structured daily routine. Grateful is not even enough of a description to express our love for you guys. Thank you, and so excited to be apart of the family!
Ben, the owner, assured me my 160 pound Great Dane would be kenneled in a 6x6 space during the two weeks he was there for boarding. Pictures show the small space my dog had while he was boarded there, which is definitely not a 6x6 space. He was in this space except when taken out to walk, treadmill and social interactions. In the kennel he had no room to move, stand on even surface or walk or lay down. The bed stayed in there so he couldn't move or stand on an even surface and the bed was too small for my dog as well. I picked him up this morning at 7am and he was in there as well. I am extremely concerned with the conditions my dog was placed in that I did. it consent to. This was not a temporary space for him but where he stayed when kenneled the whole two weeks he was there as the staff informed me there is no larger kennel space than this despite Ben telling me my dog would be in a 6x6 space. Accommodations were discussed and Ben told me my dog would be in a 6x6 kennel but his employees informed me at pick up the facility does not have any 6x6 kennel and my dog was kenneled in the attached pictures and not any larger kennel space. Ben informed me via voicemail the kennel he was placed in was "more than big enough for him." The attached pictures are where he was kenneled and no larger kennel space is in the facility despite Ben telling me my dog would be in a 6x6 kennel. I consented to my dog being in a 6x6 kennel space but was lied to about this by Ben. At pick up the employees told me the kennel in the pictures in the largest kennel in the facility, which is definitely not 6x6. Don't blame the customer for lying about the kennel conditions you placed their dog in. The pictures speak for themselves and this is not what was consented to. I trusted Ben with being truthful and proving g my dog kennel space he said he would get but found out at pick up I was lied to. The kennel my dog in no way it was 6x6. He was in the left kennel and to the right are two other separate kennels. the one my dog in was approximately 5x3 with no level standing room for my dog as you can see in the picture. This is how he was kenneled for two weeks. Unacceptable and not what I agreed to. A 6x6 space would be a square, not a rectangle, basic geometry at work here. This space is most definitely not a rectangle with one direction being much narrower than the other. As you can see in the pictures, his water bowl was bone dry with no specks of water even though there are staff on site 24/7. This is equally concerning. A couple years ago at their old location we arrived to the facility at approximately 1am to pick my dog up from boarding unexpectedly and we found the doors unlocked and opened in an area you wouldn't want the building unsecured. We attempted to find the employee and couldn't so we called the police in case something happened to them. The police found them sleeping somewhere in the back of the facility, which was a significant safety issue for my dog and all other dogs there. We were there inside the facility for about one hour without the employee ever knowing we were in the building where we could easily roam free or anyone else could have. Even when the police arrived the employee still did not show up. The police roamed the facility to find the employee. I thought this was a one time concern with a specific employee so I continued to use them as Ben told me that employee would not work there anymore. He told me he allows the night shift to sleep but the doors need to be shut and locked I now have a pattern of concerns. I don't post this review lightly. I have very limited options where my dog can go for boarding because of his reactivity to other dogs but there is no way I will return to Devotion to Dogs. I am not okay with how my dog was kenneled and I am not okay with how I have been treated by Ben as a customer for reporting my concerns to him. I find them to be very disrespectful to me as a long standing customer.
We did the two week board and train for our husky Wallen because he had an incident of aggression. The results were incredible! Josh and Martina know what they are doing! They were patient and professional through the entire process, listened and worked with all of our questions and concerns, and kept us up to date daily on Wallen's progress. They were understanding with knowing our schedule constraints and made sure we had enough follow-ups to make sure we knew how to continue training after we left. We cannot recommend them enough.
Just finished the 10 day stay and train program. We are blown away by the progress our new rescue pit Charlie has made. Our main concern was his high prey drive. We had no control and now have all the control and tools we need to keep improving and enjoying life! On top of that he's now fully trained, obedient, and confident with his skills. We are thrilled to death with devotion to dogs. The training was worth every penny. The ENTIRE staff is above and beyond amazing - they are so knowledgeable, caring, patient, and helpful - we are confident moving forward knowing we have their support. Thank you!!!
After years of owning Cane Corsos, we decided to adopt/rescue a 1 yr old Corso that was highly reactive, among other things. We decided we needed the help of someone experienced. Ben and team came highly recommended from a rescue org. Ben gave us the guidance and tools to turn our Corso into a law abiding citizen, to the point we were comfortable rescuing a female Corso. He helped us get them to the point where they are best friends. Ben's a walking encyclopedia who will not just stick to one method, he'll try multiple methods along with phsycology to get your dog in the right mindset.
Me and my girlfriend adopted a dog, Pinky, back in 2025, when we adopted her they said she was quiet calm and shy, a week after bringing her home she started being very people and dog aggressive and even attacked people and dogs. We were scared to even bring her outside on a walk because she would go insane at anything that moved. As two teenagers who just moved out on their own we were lost and felt very hopeless on what to do. The last thing we wanted to do was have to surrender her especially after her past. We looked around for weeks trying to find the right place but many places weren't reliable and didn't seem like they would work. We contacted devotion to dogs and right away I knew we had to at least give it a shot. Going in I wasn't sure if it would work or if I was just wasting my money but I had to give it a shot. Even just after the first appointment, I felt confident taking her on walks and even being able to have her look at other people and dogs then look back at me for approval. It was really a night and day difference. I could not recommend this place more and honestly without them and without their help through this process I don't know where I would be with her. I can bring her confidently to a park and drop the leash knowing that she will come back to me the second I say. If you are looking for a sign to get your dog trained here this is it!
Devotion to Dogs is FANTASTIC!!! My husband and I rescued a pup from the San Diego Humane Society, and we had no idea the struggles that were to come as she adjusted to her new life with us in our apartment. Luna had all this energy and was very reactive towards people and dogs, both inside and outside of the house. We had tried other trainers in the past, but we couldn't seem to break through her behaviors and it was a constant struggle. When I got pregnant, I knew I needed more help with her reactivity so I could take her on walks with a baby and not have these concerns. I was referred to Ben and Devotion to Dogs through a friend who also used them for her reactive pup and we decided to reach out. Ben came over for our first initial consultation and immediately saw her reactivity issues. He spent hours with us talking through his experiences, his recommendations and the structure of the training he could provide. We did a stay and train with Luna for 3 weeks with Devotion to Dogs, which included us having in-person training sessions with Josh and Martina. She was a changed dog! We got her a doggy treadmill at home to help with the energy, she was conditioned with an e-collar to help us with her training, and she has changed so much for the better! I can now walk down the sidewalk next to dogs and people and not have to worry about her reacting. We can introduce her to strangers and even have people come over again without worrying she will react or show aggression. Once you book with Devotion to Dogs, you have access to the wonderful trainers to answer your questions, and even attend group socialization classes to keep up with the training for your pup. Luna loved her time so much that Ben, Josh, Martina and Courtney are some of her favorite people and she even gets excited to hear their names when we go to class! I can't thank Devotion to Dogs enough for helping us have a well behaved pup before we add a baby to our family in March. I know they will continue to support us through our next chapter as well. If you are thinking about reaching out to a trainer in San Diego, you should absolutely consider Devotion to Dogs! They are so friendly, treat your pups as their own, and are so knowledgeable. Thank you Ben & Team!

Both of our dogs have done the board and train program at Devotion to Dogs. Ben is a highly knowledgeable trainer and the program made a big difference in our dogs. They have fear aggression and previously couldn't be around people or other dogs. Within the second week of board and train, we were walking them around public places. Ben, Dustin, Taylor, Alyssa, and the team all made sure that we were given clear instructions as owners to continue this training at home. We were also given daily updates and photos of their progress. Highly recommend Devotion to Dogs! read more

I highly recommend Ben Davidson and his excellent team at Devotion to Dogs. My rescue pup Louie needed help with fear aggression. I had adopted Louie in April and it took a few weeks for the problem to manifest itself, but when it did I knew it was a dangerous issue that I did not have the knowledge to tackle on my own So I committed to a three week board and train program for Louie. Yes it was expensive and I had very high hopes. Devotion to Dogs did not disappoint. Not only did they teach him obedience skills but they taught me how to help him approach others in a calm way. Even more important, they gave me the tools that I need to continue his training at home. DtoD provided a detailed training regimen. I am continuing to work with Louie and he's still a work in progress, but the changes are so dramatic. A few days ago I took Louie to see my grandkids (ages 14, 12 and 10) and rather than growls and warnings, it was a virtual love fest. That's a big win! Ben is highly skilled, and trainers Kaylie and Taylor are excellent. Courtney, who runs the business side of things, lives up to the same high standards. One point that's worth noting: DtoD does use the e-collar in the training program. It is a TENS unit, similar to those used by humans for pain management. At first I was horrified because I associated the e-collar with "shock collars." But Ben helped me understand how effective the e-collar is when used properly as a communication tool and not as punishment. It's a highly sophisticated training tool that helps the dog understand what is expected. Louie may never be completely welcoming and calm around all strangers, but now I have confidence that I have the tools to help him be a great dog! Big vote of confidence for Devotion to Dogs' read more

I can't say enough good stuff about Devotion to Dogs. Ben, Cortney, Dustin and Taylor are all amazing! They have helped me tremendously with my two dogs. They have gave me the tools to help with behavioral issues for my female dog. Both my dogs did the board and train. Ben and Cortney continue to check in with me. I can't thank them enough! read more
All I can say is "EXCELLENT!" We live in Long Beach and Ben made the trek up to our house to work with our German Shepherd "Chloe". He stayed over 3 hours first identifying what our goals were and then all about addressing the behaviors we needed to correct. Starting with obedience inside the home to mentally stimulate and while she is extremely intelligent it was amazing to see how quickly she responded to the commands versus at her own pace in the past. Barking at the door was addressed and within a couple days of practicing Bens technique found she stopped barking with the doorbell, observed while we were not home through the RING. Walking on a leash was a significant improvement and threw out the window how I previously was trained and utilized the prong collar. Even with some distractions she has done a much better job focusing on me and allowing me to lead the walk. Prior to our training I purchased the Mini Educator collar and waited to be shown how to properly utilize and so glad I did since I would have done it all wrong and terrified my poor pup. Ben is truly amazing with the animals and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great trainer that will have results even after the first visit. Our next training with him will be in San Diego while we interact my GSD with my moms pitbull mix after they got into an altercation months back. Ben offered to help the transition and ensure they are amicable again, just as they were before the isolated incident. Thank you Ben for the help!! read more

We brought our 14 month old Shepherd mix to D2D because he developed an aggression towards puppies. I couldn't take him to the dog park or dog beach anymore because I couldn't trust him, which really was sad because we all loved taking him. Ben and his team literally changed our lives. We sent Charlie for 3 weeks and he is still the same dog in all the good ways, but he is so much better now! We love D2D because they have Ongoing help and support with their Facebook Live Q&A's, monthly pack walks, and are very helpful with any questions are concerns that may pop up. They also do boarding which we have done when we went on vacation and I know our dog is being well cared for. I would recommend Devotion to Dogs to anyone!! read more

I recently approached Ben for his help in working with 2 Australian Shepherds. I'm very familiar with the breed (these guys are the third and fourth I Aussies that I've had - and my dad also had two Aussies on his ranch in Texas). They can, at times, be somewhat challenging in that they are both mentally and physically very active by nature - so the laying the proper training foundation is especially critical. My latest two Aussies have been especially challenging for me which is why I turned to Ben. Ben is absolutely a cut above the trainers I've used from time to time in the past. His training approach is comprehensive in the sense that he stresses the achievement of the correct mental state as a platform to build upon - and then utilizing logical learning feedback and reward tools. I love what we are already accomplishing - and am looking forward to building upon our already significant progress and establishing relationships with my dogs that maximize our mutual happiness and well-being. I've now had the opportunity to be around Ben enough to feel that there isn't a behavioral or training challenge that can't be conquered with his help. Dogs will always be a part of my life - and now I feel that I have a partner in shaping my ongoing relationships with them. I would like to pass on my highest recommendation to others with respect to Ben. read more

We went through 3 different trainers before we found Ben. He did an amazing job with our pit. We recently had a baby and knew we had to get another trainer involved or we would have to re home our fur baby. Ben came and within minutes Bolt was responding very well to all of his training. We work with him everyday now and he continues to get better. I can now walk him on a loose leash with the stroller on my own and he doesn't seem to care about other dogs as we pass by. I'd highly recommend Ben helping you with any behaviors and training you need! Thank you Ben! read more

Ben is the BEST! He really helped us after we adopted an older dog who had been in the shelter for a whole year. He gave us the tools and techniques needed to be a better dog owner! We now know how to communicate with our dogs better and show leadership. Read below for the back story and transformation: My husband and I recently adopted a 5 yr old German shepherd mix, Spencer, who was showing signs of "stranger danger." He would bark and charge at anyone who wasn't us! Whether this be a friend inside our home or a neighbor out walking their dog. Spencer even nipped at our family members. We knew we needed help right away. We first had a phone consultation with Ben and after speaking with him we knew he would be the person to help us. With his years of expertise, he spent 2 hours with Spencer and we saw a drastic transformation! Spencer now walks on his leash like a gentleman, doesn't bark at strangers, and we are able to comfortably have guests over without Spencer charging at them. We can't thank Ben enough. read more

A little over a year ago I decided to adopt a rescue pup (2 1/2 y/o) from the Humane Society. They weren't able to give a ton of insight on her history but she was beautiful and very sweet. After getting her settled in, she started unpacking her own baggage. Hyper-reactive behaviors towards other dogs, HIGH prey drive towards small animals (we have a cat ). Refusing to believe that she couldn't learn, I reached out to Ben at Devotion to Dogs after a trusted source referred me to him. From the moment Ben arrived, I had a gut feeliNg that myself and Penny (aforementioned rescue pup) were very capable and amazing hands! We're gradually working towards better behaviors. Ben continues to follow up with us and has given mysef and family the tools we need to continue our training with her. Looking forward to my continued relationship with Ben and his staff at Devotion to Dogs!! read more

First Off, Thank you, Ben! I cannot believe how much my American Bully boy Loso has changed since you came over and helped us out with our issues with his erotic behavior. Anyone who is looking for a trainer this is your guy! Within the FIRST session its like we have our self a new dog that is understanding and obedient! After some of Ben's techniques and tools that he taught us we are now able to communicate and bring around our family and friends instead of dealing with constant problems that (at the beginning 4-5 months old) we thought he would just grow out of, but lasted months (now 13 months) and were never going to change! Long Story, My boy Loso is an American Bully (Oro/LouisV/Dax Blood) weighs about 75 lbs now and was 13 months at the time of training. My wife and I have a son that is 2 yrs old and are expecting another baby boy any day now. Loso would constantly pull on the leash, jump on strangers when he first met them, and our biggest problem started when Loso was 6 months he started having a weird obsession with CHASING HIS TAIL. He would go after his tail for hours and random parts of the night, barking at it, and chasing it to the point of exhaustion. So I looked it up online and read numerous articles to see if it was normal behavior for his age and if he would grow out of it and what we could do to stop it. I tried everything, giving him toys to redirect his attention, taking him on longer walks to different places, bringing him around other dogs to play, anti-itch and healing ointments, anything that would excite his mind and try to fulfill his needs. He wouldn't chase his tail anywhere we went but would always chase it at home. I was reluctant to get a trainer because I thought I could figure it out myself or it was just a phase with him being a puppy. A few months pass and were still having problems with him and randomly one night we hear him chasing his tail in his kennel but this time he was crying and barking, I didn't think anything of it but the next morning I see THE LAST INCH OF HIS TAIL WAS BLOODY AND CHEWED. Took him to the vet and hit us with a $1000 vet bill and I had to get half his tail amputated. THIS STILL DID NOT STOP HIM! After this, I was getting desperate and I didn't know what to do anymore and felt bad for him because his behavior was so erratic it was affecting his life, losing weight, not eating, we always had to leave him outside because he wouldn't stop chasing his tail inside the house. My wife was 8 months pregnant and I would be leaving soon for a while for work and I was starting to get worried if we could keep him because of all the problems and my wife not going to be able to handle him with the newborn about to be here. So I started looking for trainers on Yelp, called almost everyone on here letting them know my story and my problems. I needed someone experienced and confident that they could help me regardless of the price. A few trainers told me that they "think" they could help, a few recommended I get 10 sessions with them and put him on doggy Prozac to "calm him down" (which I was completely against) and they "think" the problem could be fixed but it will take some time which I didn't have. When I talked to Ben immediately I felt he understood my problems and kept it real with me telling me it was an ERRATIC BEHAVIOR and I wasn't meeting his needs. The biggest thing was that he told me he could help me out and it was no problem, not that he thinks he could. He's always busy so I had to wait two weeks for our first training lesson so beforehand he recommended I got a treadmill so I bought one for $60 off offer up. When he came over he showed me how to put Loso on the treadmill, showed me and my wife a different way of walking him on the leash and within the first 5 minutes it was like I was walking a new dog! He taught me a different technique of using our E-Collar and what to do the next few weeks whenever he chases his tail and what to do when he jumps on people. The following weeks I executed Ben's plan and EVERYTHING WORKED! Stopped chasing his tail, doesn't pull on the leash, sits on command, he's able to free roam around my house now, and biggest thing my wife and family can now play with him and communicate with him without being scared! My only regret is not finding him sooner! I would recommend anyone with a puppy or fully grown dog to use Ben with whatever issues you're having or for basic obedience training to extreme cases as I had. THANK YOU BEN! read more

When we got our puppy, I did a LOT of research to find the right trainer. After interviewing several trainers, we chose Ben Davidson at Devotion to Dogs. Ben has a unique, psychology-based approach to training that involves creating a language with the dog so the he understands what you want and then rewarding him when he does it and correcting him when he doesn't. Sounds simple but it requires a deep understanding of dogs and knowledge of what works and doesn't work. Ben is very successful with aggressive and anxious dogs but I wasn't sure at first if he was the right answer for our little pup. After hearing glowing testimonials from people who have used him and a recommendation from our vet, we decided to send Cardiff to two weeks of board and train with Ben. The program is well thought out and includes two in person lessons with us so that we began to learn with the dog. Ben even took our pup to his house so the dog could swim in the pool and be around his kids. At the end of the two weeks, Ben delivered Cardiff to reintroduce him to our home. He worked with us on the commands and made sure that we felt comfortable. The difference in the dog's behavior is dramatic. He walks nicely on a leash, obeys commands and listens to us now. He is still his playful self but very well behaved. Ben has created a community of his clients with Facebook live Q&As, meet ups with other dogs, day care and boarding. With Ben, we feel that we have an expert who knows and loves our pup and who will be there anytime we have question. We are so glad that we worked with Ben and his team. read more

I can't even begin to say how amazing this company is. I went from having to walk my three dogs, one at a time, to walking all three at once. All three were pullers and are very strong so I couldn't control them. Definitely couldn't control them if another dog or person walked by. With just the initial visit from Ben, my dogs are so much more obedient! Not only did he train my dogs, he trained me! He taught me how to control my dogs. How to get them to actually listen to me. My puppy doesn't destroy things anymore. My dogs are worn out daily. I recommend this company to anyone and everyone needing even minimal training. Great company! They listen to what your concerns are and what you want to work on with your dogs. I can't wait to get one of my dogs off leash trained and even bite trained!!!!! What are you waiting for?? Hire them ASAP!!!!! read more

Two months ago I adopted my 1 year old, black German Shepherd Luna from the humane society. She had been a stray and was such an untrained, hyper, dog and car reactive dog that I could only take her to walk in the middle of the night. I hired a trainer who could not control her. Luna was like a fish out of water and opened her spay incision more than once by jumping around. Our Vet referred us to Ben at Devotion to Dogs. Luna stayed with Ben for two weeks. Before and after she came home we had a few training sessions so I could learn how to continue her training. WOW - what a miracle!!! Luna is an awesome, well trained , happy dog. She loves people and dogs. We now can go to crowded farmers markets, dog parks and anywhere. She has become my dream dog. She even quietly stays in her place during dinner. She loves Ben and the skilled, loving staff at Devotion to Dogs. We will continue our training there for Luna's whole life. Thank you Ben and Nicole !!! Dr. Lori Gritz read more

We reached out to Ben after getting our second dog, our oldest started lunging at her and showing aggression/irritation with our new puppy. Ben came to our house which was huge considering he only tries lunging at her at home, and instantly started helping us fix the mistakes we were making and things to change in order for both of our pups to be happy. We're still a work in progress but who isn't! It's nice knowing we can still reach out with any questions or concerns about the dogs, as well as the monthly walks that we are excited to start doing! Ben is fantastic! He had our dog behaving and doing tricks within an hour. He is thorough, focused, professional, and effective. Ben makes sure you understand the methods and follows up to verify results as well as make changes to facilitate training your individual dog. He reads your dog's personality and determines the root cause of unwanted behaviors. I would highly recommend that if you want a results-driven dog trainer - Ben is the best in the business. read more

Cannot even tell you how amazing Ben was. I have a Belgian Malinois who is very fearful and with that he became very aggressive towards other dogs.. he will always pull and bark nonstop at other dogs..he will pull like crazy to the point we just end the walk and turn back to go home.My Malinois also didn't listen to me but only my husband. Everyone that came over, he will go crazy and jump on them. All our guest are afraid of him. They wouldn't even go near him .Lastly he was afraid to go inside a car. Once we open the door he will run the other direction.... My husband and I actually contacted a dog trainer before Ben.. that trainer told us it was going to take at least a four plus sessions to fix his behavior . We thought about it and decided we wanted a dog behaviorist instead of just a regular dog trainer. We felt that we and our Malinois can benefit more from a behaviorist. I came across Ben's page on google and read everything on his webpage plus looked at all the videos. There was this one section where he said most dogs only need one session. I'll admit I had my doubt. I thought that was crazy since a dog trainer told us before it was going to take 4+ sessions. Honestly , I decided to pass because I was very doubtful. I decided to ask people in a fb group I was in and almost everyone recommended him to me. They were telling me how great he was . So I decided to go check yelp and of course all 5 stars. My husband and I were like okay he must really good. Of course we only want the best. We booked online and set up a day for the training. It was crazy lol . The training started and our Malinois started to do things he never did. Only one session and we have a whole new Malinois . He is so much more calm . Doesn't pull, bark at other dogs and listens to me! Crazy because he never listens to me. Even after the training was done he even told us we can call him anytime we have a issue. Which is great ! My husband and I highly recommend him !! We are so mind blown ! read more

Ben was fantastic! We have a new pit bull puppy that wants to chase the cat. After 2 sessions with Ben you can see that our dog is now leaving the cat alone! Ben was fairly priced and spent extra time working with us over the scheduled time. He really understands and explains why certain techniques work. If you're looking for a personal dog trainer, I highly recommend Ben at Devotion to Dogs! UPDATE.....6 weeks later and we've made so much progress. Our dog no longer needs to be leashed around the cat! They are practically friends :) Thanks Ben! read more
