Initially, I was a bit intimidated about seeing Dr. Lonergan, having read some unfavorable reviews. I took the time to sit down, before my appointment, and wrote out a list of my symptoms, knowing that doctors have limited time to speak with their patients. I think that this strategy helped me to focus on which issues I wanted to discuss with him.
He greeted me with a smile, and patiently asked me about what issues I was having. I am a vocalist, and wanted to know if he sees others who sing, as well. He said that they actually have a specific clinic there, which focuses on the special concerns of singers and that he does have many patients who sing. I was there just to determine whether or not I had any physical obstructions or pathology (disease processes) with my vocal chords or larynx, because I had been having problems with vocal fatigue and an inability to project my voice as well as I used to.
After explaining my symptoms, he offered to take a look at my larynx with a camera, which he would thread through my nose and nasal cavity. I recoiled, hearing this, knowing how anxious I get with such procedures. So--I asked him if one of his assistants could hold my hand, while he did the procedure, and he said, "Sure!" He used a numbing anesthetic spray, and his assistant held my hand, while Dr. Lonergan used the scope to check my larynx and vocal chords. Having the assistant there during the procedure was very comforting, allowing me to relax, so that the doctor could safely do the procedure.
The great news was that I had no apparent pathology or obstructions (such as polyps.) That was what I wanted to hear! He also suggested that I should be sure to stay hydrated, eat a low acid diet and avoid dairy foods, prior to performances. Before I left his office, he answered all my questions and concerns with the utmost of professionalism and poise.
Thank you, Dr. Lonergan, for your help! I highly recommend his services to anybody--particularly to any other vocalists in the Sonoma County area, who may be having symptoms which are causing them concern. read more
