What a joy and privilege to comfortably enjoy this beautiful setting. Yesterday was our first experience eating at a restaurant since Covid-19 and it was wonderful. This establishment did everything to make our visit comfortable while still complying with recommended safety standards. All the staff welcomed us warmly while being very professional and maintaining safe practices. Our waiter Garreth could not have been better at making us feel at home and well cared for. My best friend and I came here looking for good beer and ended up staying for dinner. What a great choice! The service was excellent and the food was even better! They were even able to accommodate my friends extreme dairy allergy. The options in the rain are large that there's something for everybody. Apparently you can't get orders to go on Saturday's. Even when they are aren't even busy. But you can go inside sit down, have a waiter take your order and then ask them to give you a box for it. Just got back from the Hoopla 2018. This was one of the best weekends I've had and every employee at Devils Backbone was so sweet and accommodative. We camped for the weekend and went because my girlfriend is an Instagram influencer and we were able to hangout in the media tent anytime with ongoing kegs and snacks. The music, indie, folk, country, bluegrass was fun to drink and dance to in the wonderful weather. All the beers are so good. My personal favorite is Mile 842, their "hoppy lager" which tastes like a lager mixed with an IPA and is roughly 8.0%. But try them all. If you get a chance to meet Jason, the head Brewmaster, he is a pleasure to speak with and is very enthusiastic about beer chemistry and food pairings. We ended up doing an exclusive beer tasting dinner which was delicious. The main restaurant open to the public also has fantastic food. I got their version of a French Dip which includes bacon, picture attached. Note that if you were going to Hoopla without the VIP passes we had, this would be an extremely expensive weekend. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars. Paying for the music, camping, beers, food, and garb on top, this could get well into $200-$300 range. I feel that if you're paying over $100 to camp and join the fun, free beers should last longer. read more

We stopped in here for a late lunch/early dinner after a little hike, and this was a great place to relax and unwind. It definitely has the ski town hunting lodge vibe to it, and has a nice big patio to enjoy a fall afternoon. The service was friendly and efficient enough, even though they were quite busy. The food was a cut above normal bar food, and you could smell the smoker going from a hundred yards away, which boded well for the Q. The Bonedipper (brisket on ciabatta) was delicious; the meat was tender and smokey, but there could have been more, especially in comparison to the pulled pork, which was piled higher than I would have thought possible to eat in a sandwich. The fries were a disappointment though, they needed to go back into the fryer for a minute or two to get them hot and crispy. Rather than trying to settle on a beer or two each, we decided to go with the full flight, which was two ounces each of their ten beers. Ultimately we felt like the beers were a bit hit or miss; the Ale of Fergus and Oktoberfest were less flavorful than they could have been, but the Gold Leaf Lager packed more flavor than it's color would lead you to believe. Our hands-down favorites though, were the Reilly's Red and Olewine's Brown, which were both outstandingly flavorful, without being overly bitter or hoppy. Next time we're camping in the area, we'll make it a point to stop here again, and maybe even bring home a growler or two... read more

Devil's Backbone is not what I expected. It's more of a restaurant than a brewery. Granted I see now that if I had read the other Yelp reviews I probably would have known that. So, shame on me. It's right next to Wintergreen and has a beautiful view of the mountains. They have a huge patio on the restaurant side, a large grassy area where it looks like they set up cornhole on the weekends, and another outdoor seating area for the bar. The building itself is steel and wood, so be prepared to not have service once you walk in the door (especially if you go to the bar). They offer 3 different sample flights and their award winning beer is constantly rotating based on what they have brewed. My favorite was their Bavarian Dark Lager, but I was sad they were out of the Pear Lager I really wanted to try. The staff is very knowledgeable and can advise you on what to try based on what you like. They also have this ginger beer I feel like I have to mention, and although, it wasn't really my style, it was definitely an interesting flavor. I can honestly say I have never had anything like it. DBBC is well worth the visit, but next time I will just try to remember to come hungry. Noteworthy: they have a great membership program that if I were local I would take advantage of. read more

So I had been here before a couple of years ago and didn't have a bad memory of the place. The ambiance is very much modeled after what seems like a lodge, so there's definitely and A+ for the decor, but where this started to go wrong was that you couldn't even tell if the restaurant was open. In the day light you can tell there is some construction going on, but when the sun goes down, there were no lights, no signs, nothing to indicate the place was even open except for the one or two people that turned in. You would think, and maybe this is just me, but you'd think they would have lights or something to show the place was open. Anyway, we finally parked after seeing other people go in and we just followed them down the paths, in the rain, to the front entrance. Once inside, there were three groups that had walked in, to include me, but the hostess seemed impatient and it took a while, probably more fair to say that it took longer that I what I would have expected, to actually get a seat. The waitress came pretty quickly at first and seemed friendly enough, but she was definitely absent a lot and didn't seem super attentive. I ordered the Grain Bowl which had quinoa, spinach, avocado, radicchio, hard boiled egg and some spicy dressing. To me, these things sounded like they should go together without a hitch, but for whatever reason, this was the most disgusting assembly of vegetables I have ever tasted in my adult life. The radicchio, which was grilled, was brown and wilted and was the most unappealing thing to look at. It tasted dirty, like it hadn't been washed. I had to send it back and when I called the waitress over, she totally agreed and even made a comment about how the radicchio just didn't work. So I ended up ordering the grilled chicken sandwich to replace the bowl of vile tasting weeds I had just sent back. It came out really quickly, actually oddly fast, but I was like fine...at that point I was just hungry. I bypassed the fries and went with the salad, which the waitress decided I wanted to Caesar salad (I didn't). This sandwich was inedible. It was SO DRY AND OVERCOOKED, I actually thought it was a freeze-dried chicken breast that they forgot to add water to. My friend had ordered the same thing and had to order mayonnaise just to add some moisture it, so clearly it wasn't just me being too picky. I went the route of ketchup and it was still way too dry. The bun was overpowering and way to big and I ended up not eating it because it was literally so dry it was sticking in my throat. Anyway, I ate the chicken with lots of ketchup, the cheese, and the bacon (the best part of the whole meal) and a couple bites of the Caesar salad and just gave up. I was over it. Then, to make things worse, we sat there like fools waiting for the waitress to bring us the check. She took forever and I finally had to ask the server that had a table of 20 people to track down our waitress so we could get our check. I'll never go back. Came from Richmond to do a quick drive down Blue Ridge and was recommended this place. Was a ghost town upon entering, wasn't even sure if it was the right place because of the many buildings and lack of signage. Went to two wrong buildings before we were told where the actually restaurant was. Sat us down upon entering since it was a slow time for them. First thing I notice was the music. Why would a barbeque and brew restaurant in Western VA be playing pop-dubstep music that would be played in a dance club? It did not fit atmosphere at all and was a bit of an annoyance to my boyfriend and I. Food was really good. Don't give you much barbeque sauce so you'll probably have to ask for more since they do not keep it on the table. Service was meh, had to re-ask for my drink again since it did not come out with my boyfriend's beer and did not come with the food. The hostess had a "sucks to be you" attitude and dismissed our request because they were so busy. Near the end of our meal, a manager popped by (after she saw me typing my review on yelp) and offered to move us to a booth which had recently become available. Too late. We declined so as to not disturb my child. Such a shame. Might have been 4 stars otherwise. Decent food and fun ambiance. TIP: Before dinner, check out the outdoors scene if the weather is nice. It was supposed to have cheese and a spicy Mayo along with au jus to dip. Well...sigh...it completely sucked. The ciabatta bread/roll was not even toasted, just plain and cold so that sucked. The meat was flavorless, overcooked by a LOT, super dry and gristle-y. Ewww. Cheese? What cheese? The spicy Mayo was a pathetic super skimpy schmear of something bright orange that had zero flavor and the texture of wet cardboard (are you sensing a theme here yet?) The pathetic single ounce of au jus was like brown water. No meat flavor, no savory flavor...JUST ZERO FLAVOR. It was abysmal. And expensive. We ate inside because there was a wait for outside, but we were seated in a corner and the ambiance sucked. There wasn't even anything good to look at to cheer us up while we choked down the swill and tried to eat the disgusting food. The constant traffic next to our table that went in and out of the restroom was just the rotten cherry on top. And damn, it was expensive to boot. Such a huge letdown and for sure we will never be back. One star for the waiter. They have such a far way to go to be even considered marginal. Tucked away in the blue ridge mountains, good beer and warm food await you in this little valley. We went here after we hiked Spy Rock, which was a treat in and of itself by the way! This establishment is massive! There's an outdoor bar compete with a fire pit. The bartender at the outdoor bar was such a drag when we were there. He was mad that we all wanted flights, but we just wanted to try the beers in small quantities before deciding which beer to actually commit to. The food is great! I highly recommend the pretzel. Love love love this place! The whole area is awesome. We went on a very cold fall day, and they had fire pits outside, heat lamps, etc if you wanted to be outside but stay warm! We opted to go inside to the brewpub and have dinner. The food we had was absolutely amazing. We had their dry rub chicken wings for an appetizer and they were some of the best wings I've ever had! I got the fish and chips for my meal, and it was delicious. My husband got the 3 meat meal (unsure of the menu name) but it came with ribs, sausage, and pulled pork. I was able to try a little of each and they all were bursting with flavor! I would go back again just to get a plate of their pulled pork! Their beer/drinks are tasty as well! One of the best breweries I have been to, Devils Backbone delivers the entire package. The beers on tap were fantastic: they ranged from darker beers such as the classic Vienna Lager to several IPAs and ales. I first had the Summer Ale, which was a delicious and citrusy Golden Ale that was very light on the palate. Next, I had the Greenmont Gold, which was also a lighter beer but had lovely floral and herbal undertones. Both were excellent, and perfect for anyone who enjoys the flavor of beer but is not a fan of hoppy beers like IPAs. The food was expensive, but absolutely delicious. I had the chopped peach salad, which featured fresh and juicy peaches with pecans, blue cheese, and an excellent vinaigrette. Even without any meat it was very filling, and had an perfect ratio of greens to toppings. A favorite among my friends was the fish and chips. Many of the menu items utilized DB beers in the meal, which created a unique culinary experience that complemented our drinks. They also offered several different cocktails and wines for those who are not beer drinkers. The scenery was beautiful and the entire facility was very clean and well maintained, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
