This is a Yelp recommendation. These places are great for team building. The more games and events, the better. Competitions, choosing who excels at what skill and such. I would prefer no alcohol, however, since this was a volunteer participation activity for the crew, it was everyone for themselves. The gang started off on the first floor at the lounge. There's a large variety of games to get things started, even on the walls, themselves. There's also a cafe with a few pretty good food options. Eventually, we migrated to the second floor and began wielding the axes. If you've read my previous writings you'll understand why I was disqualified and Marshalled the events. FWIW, at the end I threw against the top axe chucker and thoroughly cleaned his clock. This should garner me creds amongst the younger folk. Back downstairs for more snacks, drinks and the results. Despite walking by Detroit Axe numerous times I've never actually visited until recently. I came here with a group and we were able to throw do some axe throwing and it was a ton of fun. I've done Axe throwing before at the HUB in Auburn Hills, and while that specific location looks more fancy and elaborate, I'd have to say I had more fun here at Detroit Axe. At first when I found out we were sharing two lanes with another group I was hesitant but it all worked out in the end as we were able to play games together and make it an overall competition. The best part is that our host that was showing us how to properly throw was so funny and animated, he made sure we had a good time. Now it's definitely not cheap to come here but I think worth the price for a fun night with some friends or family! I'd definitely stop by again as I had a blast. read more

When I tell you I love this place....its an understatement. Now here's the thing. The food is all The Corner... the restaurant downstairs from Detroit Axe. But it's all one experience. You can visit The Corner without going upstairs to Detroit Axe, but if you are upstairs and order, it's from the corner. The axe throwing experience is super dope and you can get hooked very easily. I've spent multiple days up here since visiting for the first time last month (Feb)....to the point where I'm joining the league It can be just you or a group of you that come BUT here's the kicker..... Walk-ins are $25 but you an hour and have to wait around for an opening.... If you register online it's $40 and you get an hour and a half and can book for large groups. Axe throwing is tons of fun! Afterwards you can go downstairs or stay up, order food and grab a board game off the wall and continue your evening. This place is amazing and I'm definitely a fan. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday in March and since then we've been back twice. The first time we did axe throwing, then had dinner and drinks, the second and third time we sat at the bar and outside, respectively, for dinner and drinks. The wine and beer selection is good. I just usually tell the server or the bartender my preference of flavor profiles and they pick something for me. It's worked great every time. I definitely prefer the outside sofas. They provide privacy and you can hear the person you're with but you can still feel like you're part of the restaurant vibes. Each time we visit we picked a board game from the expansive wall. So much fun!!!!! I loved this experience. Our Axe Master, David, is an excellent instructor and coach. He was with us the entire time to help us adjust our form, keep score, and run a fun tournament style competition with our group. It's best to make a reservation like we did. (I heard that making a reservation gives you an extra half hour of time.) We had 90 minutes and learned so much. We had a group of 6, so we had plenty of time for everyone to get lots of throws. There is a bar area nearby so you can grab beverages, and you can order food too. This is located in the same venue as The Corner Grill, so you have access to their food menu. Large metered parking lot behind the building. They host axe throwing leagues on Tuesday nights and Sunday brunch. I'm going to try to get a team together! read more

Detroit Axe was so fun. Who knew throwing an axe was so skilled? Detroit Axe took the time to teach the whole party the correct and safe way of throwing an axe. They also are 100% by the book when it comes to fun and safety. Do not cross that yellow line if you have alcohol in hand. Keep it on the table. Our Axe throwing teacher kept score and even help us teach our game! That was some service and added to our enjoyment. The Ferndale location is vast with two bar areas, a kitchen that serves food, and an area for board games. Parking was easy in the public lots. This place is soooo much fun! I went with my coworker and her family for a night out and it was amazing! Mercury was our coach/axe-throwing expert and he helped so much. I even hit a bullseye during my training. The bar has an abbreviated menu, but the bartender does such a good job. I had a strawberry lemongrass grey goose lemon drop martini and it was amazing! So. Let me explain my rating. Arrived to have a beer. Previous to ax throwing. Decided to stay and have some more beers before dinner. Found out about an hour in that they were serving me a different beer than I thought. The beer that they were serving me had lactose. Not a problem for most people and I'm lactose intolerant. After being this to the servers attention she profusely apologized and that was about it. I switched to a different beer. We bought more beers, dinner, and then someone went upstairs for our reservation. Our res was at 8. Keep in mind we are a staircase away attempting to settle our tab. At 8:03 our friend texts that we REALLY need to get there as they are upset because we are late. Next we all get there and the "ax master" Mason yells at us that he has safety instructions and he's not going to #*ucking repeat them. I say ok I will get my friends from the bar. *keep in mind this is a "two lane" place and it's not just me and my 3 friends, it's four other people in addition that I don't know. We begin. Mason does not offer instruction- he makes a comment every now and again. At the end he tells me I wasn't open to instruction and that is why he did not give it. So much fun! Very little experience needed. Great for groups. Located on 9 Mile in downtown Ferndale in the upstairs space of the Corner Bar/Restaurant (which has great food by the way). There is affordable metered public parking in the rear. You can do an hour by walking in or reserve a prepaid hour and a half spot using the website. Super easy booking process. When my group of four arrived check in was seamless. We had an Axe Master who provided training and went over safety measures (wear closed in shoes, stay in designated spaces, throw together and retrieve axes together). He then led us through a round robin tournament followed by a March madness type of playoff. Again -- soooo much fun that I wanted to go back the next day. You can order drinks while you're throwing and venture downstairs to the restaurant before or after for some really good American fare. Highly recommend! read more

Came here with some coworkers for a team bonding event and we had a blast! Reservations were easy and the staff were all super friendly. Our axe master friend was super fun and helpful with everyone and we enjoyed the competition! I was a little bummed that all they had to throw were the hatchets as other axe throwing I've attended have a fun variety of objects to throw. I also wished there was more space for seating as we had a larger group and were constantly being bumped into as people were walking into the lanes. The bar was quick and made our drinks well. I've been axe throwing at 7 establishments in 5 cities. Detroit Axe provided, BY FAR, the best experience. What's sets DA apart from the others, is the instruction. If you're a rank beginner, or if you fancy yourself pretty decent, this is a great place to come. If you're really good, come here to throw against people who are probably even better. Our axe master was Jonathan M, himself a competitive/champion thrower. He's a super personable guy, as well as an outstanding coach and teacher. He corrected flaws in my basic form, and went so far as to teach me some competitive throwing techniques. (Hint...pros hold the axe/hatchet completely differently than you might think). Plus, under his tutelage my son was hitting the bullseye, and the clutch, with regularity. He taught me how to throw the long handled axe "Detroit Style," that is, one handed. After noticing a flaw in my approach and telling me how to correct it, he had me on bullseye. Dude's a pro. Jon-a-than! Jon-a-than! The atmosphere of this facility is the coolest that I've been to...industrial and kitschy at the same time. Detroit Axe is located in the same building with another cool place: The Corner Grill, Bar, and Game Room. The throwing lanes are half a story up from The Corner, and the whole place seems interconnected. There's an additional, smaller, bar upstairs. While we didn't eat here, I was more than satisfied with the beer selection. Speaking of that, do keep in mind that TOO MUCH beer, and axes, may not go well together. You'll find a few classic arcade games, but that's probably not, by itself, a reason to come here. DA (and the Corner Grill) has tons of old/new board games as well...for some, that alone just might be a reason for coming here. Age limit: technically, it's 14 and up. But, if you have a muscular 13 year old who refuses to shave his stupid-ass-virgin-butt-hair mustache, he just might be able to slip in. AXE THROWING! Huge fan of this place! We actually came here for a stop during my bachelorette party and I left feeling like it was the perfect choice. We had such a fun experience!! When you enter the downstairs bar, you are met with a huge circular bar and an entire wall of board games. I was in love with this vibe immediately. We ordered a drink at the bar & played a round of What Do You Meme while we waited for our axe lanes to open up. The axe throwing itself was an absolute blast! Our assigned instructor walked us through every step of the way & offered on the spot coaching throughout. Because of him, we felt safe and were actually able to throw the axes correctly! In a group of 9, everyone was able to hit the target and have fun! Depending on your group size, they will create a competition and turn it into a game. We played bracket style. After our axe session, we went back downstairs for some snacks! We ordered a variety of bar snacks (all delicious) and of course one friend had to get a bowl of fruity pebbles. We have been to the Corner before and I reviewed it on yelp. Detroit Axe is a connected area 1/2 floor higher than the main area of Corner, with its own smaller bar and the throwing areas. There are serious issues with parking. Ferndale closed their largest parking area for a monster parking garage/building complex project. The private meter maids are very aggressive. There is a valet service n Friday/Sat nights. The Axe bar has about 1/4 the drinks and beer choices as the Corner main bar. Waiter service while throwing is spotty. The event itself is fun. $20 per person per hour, for the first time you need two hours, because it is a little hard to learn. They have a host/trainer who stays with each group. You are throwing a small hand axe into replaceable wooden boards for score. There is a scoring system, think bowling, and some people are competitive. A long as your group is fun, you will have fun. I can see someone taking it too serious and ruining it. The only major issues are the noise (obviously, given people are throwing axes and cheering), and the non throwing players have to stay behind the counter surface with their drinks, which results in a small aisle way and lots of jostling. read more

Great place to go to with a large group or even on a date! Came here for a work event with a large group and the staff here was wonderful. Many of us had never thrown an axe before, and they did a wonderful job teaching us! I've got the worse hand eye coordination and by the end of the night i had gotten decently good at it. They set up a super fun competition for our group and they were super encouraging! They have a small bar upstairs next to the axe throwing which had a lot of local brews. They also had a nice seating area upstairs to hang out in! Parking ended up being a little difficult. There's a large pay by phone lot in the back and street parking but if you go on a Friday night, it might be a little difficult to find an open spot. I ended up having to park at the garage a little ways away 5min walk which wasn't too bad. Overall, would definitely come back! read more

I'm finally getting around to writing my review from our visit back in January 2020. Chloe was our axe master/ instructor. She was AWESOME. From start to finish she had our attention, made it a fantastic experience for us, and kept us safe. We appreciate you Chloe! This was our first time axe throwing. We had a general idea of what we'd be doing - throwing axes... but we had no idea that there was more to it. Detroit Axe is the upstairs part of The Corner Grill, which wasn't immediately clear from the outside. As soon as you walk in, there is a sign directing potential axe-throwers upstairs. As soon as we got there, we paid for our experience. This was also where you would add a tip for your axe master. Kind of an awkward set up, because this is before you even meet them, before you even start. I'm sure we could have done a cash tip afterwards and that wouldn't have been weird, but it's certainly easier to do it all at once. Once it was our turn, we got the low down on axe throwing rules and techniques. We each got some time to figure out our technique before playing a few games. It was SO MUCH fun. I would absolutely recommend axe throwing here for date night, family bonding, work outings - literally any excuse you can think of. This is a great event for nearly all ages - even my old man enjoyed throwing with us! Worth the $. Worth the visit. read more

This was a really fun experience. Came here with 4 friends on NY's Eve. We ate dinner first downstairs, I'll review that separately. We put our name in for a lane when we arrived for dinner at 7:30, they said they could get us in at 9. The timing worked out perfectly. You share a lane with others - up to 12 per 2 lanes. We shared with 4 other people, (so 9 of us), so we had to rotate who went with who, but it worked out. Our Axemaster did a great job telling us the safety rules, teaching us how to throw and keeping us from chopping a limb off. It is much harder then you would expect. And a lot more fun!! Something about throwing a large bladed object at a bullseye is a blast. You throw against others in your group, so 2 of you go up at a time (2 separate lanes), and then you get 5 throws each, then the next 2 go up. You can keep score and our Axemaster showed us how, but after a few throws we gave up since we weren't very good and we weren't really there to compete with each other, we just wanted to throw the axes. It was $20 a person for 1 hour. It seems a bit high, but we all felt like we got in enough throws each. Maybe with 12 on the 2 lanes it would seem a bit more crowded, but we were happy. Had a blast with some folks from work tonight! Our instructor, David, was absolutely fantastic. He was very patient, and helped each of us with our technique (I use the term loosely). Each of us hit the target at least once, which was a miracle in itself). He made it fun. This space is really cool. The bar downstairs SERVES CEREAL. WHY DON'T I LIVE IN DETROIT?! I love me some Cap'n Crunch. The decor is kind of industrial and vintage combined. There's old wood floors and exposed ducts and old-school arcade games like Ms. PAC-Man and Frogger. I've been to another axe-throwing establishment in another city and my experience at Detroit Axe was far superior. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun and unique night out! read more

Finally got to try this place and it exceeded all expectations. The axe throwing happens on the 2nd floor. The first floor is a bar/cafe and the vibe is relaxed with an entire wall full of board games. Definitely less formal than its predecessor (Local). The staff of the axe area were super professional and they were surprisingly good teachers. I have thrown plenty of axes at ren fests, but I never go the hang of it, After a five minute tutorial, I was able to consistently stick an axe in the target. Also, they did a good job in keeping our party safe and setting up a mini tournament. I was surprised when they broke out calipers to confirm hits. Probably not for everyone, but if you have any interest in this activity, This place should be on your list. read more

But we were paired with 2 other groups (8 total people plus they had other friends there taking up space) and told it would probably take 90 minutes instead of the hour we reserved. The area is tiny and with only 4 seats and no standing room plus having to be so close to people you don't even know and trying to get around each other to play was super awkward. It ruined it for me. It seems like a money grab to charge per person and then shove a bunch of people together on each lane. read more

I really enjoyed my time at Detroit Axe. The venue is set up into two sections- the restaurant and bar is downstairs, while the axe throwing is upstairs. So, you can go for the food and drink or go for the axe throwing. In any event, people can visit the same venue and have totally different experiences. Make no mistake we came for the axe throwing. However, after going upstairs we were placed on a waiting list. So, we headed back downstairs to the bar. While waiting for our turn to throw an axe, we decided to take some shots. Right after we took the shots, I informed my companion that drinking tequila and throwing an axe may not be the best idea. Fortunately, the downstairs restaurant/ bar had a wall devoted to board games. We found a coffee table and proceeded to play dominos. Definitely an interesting concept- a restaurant equipped with board games. So, after a spirited game of dominos, we received a call letting us know that it was time to throw some axes. Upstairs is where the real fun begins. The first thing we were instructed to do was to sign a waiver and the first thing I saw was a first aid kit in the "axe throwing cage." Needless to say I was a little concerned. We entered the axe throwing area and met the "Axe Master." The Axe Master gave our group safety instructions. And, unlike the instructions from flight attendants in which I routinely ignore, he had my complete undivided attention. After the safety instructions, he gave us brief instructions on how to properly throw an axe. Apparently, you can throw an axe with one hand or two handed. The Axe Master was patient and entertaining. Throwing an axe is not as easy as it looks. Trust me, it's not about strength or athleticism, it's about technique. In learning how to properly throw an axe, I missed the target many times. After a few practice throws our group paired up and played games against each other. It was really an enjoyable experience. And, it was only $20.00 an hour. I'll be back for more axe throwing in the future. read more

Came last night for a work function and had a great time! The axe masters (?) We're fun and friendly and did a great job teaching us how to throw. But the best part was our bartender Syd, she absolutely crushed it, she was on top of everything, was so personable and sweet! Came here awhile back now with a group of five plus two randoms. It turns out it costs less money to walk in than it does to make an appointment. I could go in depth, but I'll keep it briefish. You get someone to teach you how to throw the axes, and how the point system works. The whole idea is ridiculous, but that's cool -- it's fun as shit. It's satisfying to chuck the axes once you get used to it, and it's the most fun seeing the macho ass dudes come in and wind up being the worst ones. At the same time, this is definitely a bit of a novelty sort of night out. They have tournaments and that, but I can't imagine making Detroit Axe a regular thing, as fun as it is. Once you learn the technique, it's not difficult to get a bullseye or damn near it every time. It's also a little steep at $20-$40 a session. I 100% recommend trying this place at least once. Even if you hate it, it'll be memorable, for sure. read more

We were there for a friends birthday with a group of 18 and were able to, in our 2 hour block, learn how to throw, and have a tournament to see the winner. Seriously... who thought of this... because this idea is AWESOME! For the same reasons I love boxing, throwing axes is super therapeutic and a great arm workout! The actual environment is a weird twist of fancy restaurant with the axe throwing 'lanes' located in the back. There's some video game and a basement couches to lounge on beforehand but I recommend you get there a hour before because it's a first come first serve deal. There's so many lanes and only so many people allowed to a lane. There are some light instructions and demos beforehand by the 'axe masters' but otherwise be prepared to start throwing these things like Vikings. Heads up, you either got the technique or you don't! We had the best time at Detroit Axe! I would highly recommend coming here! If you are looking for a fun night out, Detroit Axe is the way to go. We rented out a lane for a birthday and it was so worth it. The entire time the employees were so organized and friendly. They made coming there so easy! We checked in and our lane was waiting for us. Brad was our axe master! He was amazing!!!! Not only was he friendly, but he really helped every person in our group find the best way to throw. Everyone had a blast!!!! If you go to Detroit Axe, ask for Brad! We would totally go again to have him as our guy!! The only disappointment was that Detroit Axe does not have Big Ten Network. We wanted to watch a game while playing and we were told by the front desk staff that they did not have Big Ten Network because it was too expensive. I definitely understand expensive, but they told us it cost $145 a month to have it. Our group paid enough that night to have it for 3 months. I was super nervous to start, but this place was SO fun. Beer prices for anything other than PBR and Black Label and the like are ridic ($11.25 for M43 eeeek). Probably not a bad thing though -- I'm sure it helps keep people from getting shitfaced before they start hurling sharp objects across the room. $20/person gets you an hour of throwing, and each person got to do a practice round and then 3-4 rounds with at least 5 throws each. It wasn't bad, but it went by so quickly I'd recommend getting 2 hours. The Axe Master keeps score so you don't have to pay that close of attention, which is nice, but I do wish it was set up more as a tournament somehow... But that'd cut in to how many times each person gets to go. I really don't think I have anything bad to say about this place -- it's walking distance to downtown (because it is downtown, duh), they have beer, and you get to throw axes. Sooo. I love this place. We came here to throw axes, which was a fun experience. The place is very cool inside. It's a nice looking restaurant, I'll have to come back to try the food. They have every game imaginable for you to play and an entire game library set up on one wall. They also have a bar with TVs in the Center. The axe tossing is upstairs with its old bar. This was my first time axe throwing and was super happy with the experience. We came as a group of 3 on a Sunday and were fortunate that there were no others at that time, so we had 2 lanes and a single instructor all to ourselves -- all for the great price of $60 total (not including tip). We were a little apprehensive at first, but the instructor was super awesome, energetic, and instructive. She quickly got us up to speed and cheered us along the way as we learned the ropes. Overall great prices, and not overly crowded. There is a board game cafe as well as bar so there's plenty of things to do when you're done. Overall, highly recommend! read more
