    WBG Concrete & Carpentry

Mr. Golt with WBG is a friendly individual who will certainly beat any competitors quote for…read moreconcrete work. However, buyer beware. WBG was contracted to install a 500 sqft 4" thick driveway extension at my home. No fill dirt or geological study were recommended prior to the start of the job. This deficiency becomes become relevant after the completion of the job. At the completion of the job, athletically, the work looked very nice. We were advised to stay off the extension for 4-5 days and to keep the concrete moist via garden hose. We complied with WBG's recommendations and actually stayed off the new extension for 2 weeks. As soon as we began driving on the driveway extension, a 30' long hairline crack appeared down the middle of the extension. The crack ran the entirety of the driveway. The company was notified as soon as the crack appeared and photo's were sent. I advised the company that we would keep an eye on the crack for the next few weeks and see if it became any worse. Over the coming weeks, the severity of the crack worsened and numerous other horizontal cracks began appearing. At that point, I advised WBG that I was seeking resolution. Mr. Golt advised that he guarantee's his work, but can not guarantee the concrete won't crack. This seemed unusual as WBG specializes in concrete work. I acknowledged that most driveways in FL crack over time, but I felt that a driveway should not crack after 2-3 weeks of it being poured. When asked why the driveway cracked, WBG suggested that I had an especially soft lot. I asked for a resolution as it pertains to the faulty outcome. WBG offered two different resolutions. One included cutting out the vertical crack with a 30'x2' trench cut down the middle of the driveway as well as cutting trenches for the horizontal cracks and repouring concrete in the trenches. I related that the option of a "Frankenstein driveway" does not appeal to my wife and I. He offered a 2nd resolution which included staining/painting the driveway and incorporating the crack into a design. We declined this option as well. Both of the resolutions offered did nothing for the assumed underlying issue that we have a soft lot and the cracks would continue to spread and worsen. With that, I asked WBG to tear up the extension and bring in fill dirt to add density to the ground. I even offered to pay for the fill dirt, but obviously was not willing to pay the company for the job to be redone. Initially, Mr. Golt agreed to this concept. I was pleased. I told Mr. Golt to take his time because we had an agreement and an element of trust had been established. Months passed and the job was still not completed. During the wait, I asked WBG on more than one occasion about the fill dirt as I was seeking a date to have it delivered. Finally a face to face meeting with Mr. Golt occurred. He advised that concrete orders were 1.5-2 months out at this time. I asked why the order for my project had not been placed over 2 months prior when we had a verbal agreement to move forward with the repair. He had no answer. Mr. Golt also advised that when demolition of the extension occurs, he can not guarantee that he won't damage my main existing driveway. This was troublesome to hear. I advised Mr. Golt that if he damages anything on my property, I would expect him to fix the damage or pay to have the damage fixed. WBG had already damaged my property previously with the use of their bob cat/front end loader. The damage was minor and included a chunk of stucco being knocked out of my home and a piece of fence being damaged. The previous damage didn't upset me because the damage was minor and Mr. Golt was honest about it. But the thought of additional damage was troublesome. The 4th option of small claims court was eluded to and the conversation abruptly ended at that point. Over the coming days, I advised WBG that I would truly prefer to mitigate this issue outside of court. I asked him to please move forward with the concrete order despite the addition wait time. Mr. Golt became adversarial and communications with his company ended at that point. I am left with a cracked driveway extension and a bad taste in my mouth.
