The breads are usually really nice, as are the pastries that have some kind of topping on them. The only things I'm not really a fan of are the buns with raisins in them since they are kind of boring. Other than that, I've really enjoyed everything else and even though we pick up the bag at the end of the day the breads still taste very fresh. Cafe Rosa is by far my favourite bakery in Copenhagen. Maya, the owner, adds a real personal,…read morequirky touch to the place. She labours for hours and hours to make the most perfect cakes in the whole of Scandinavia. My favourites include potato bread, carrot bread, cheese cake, carrot cake, fruit crumble and chocolate banana cake. If you are very lucky, you might be there on a day when Maya prepares her scrumptious vegeburgers; they are made from chickpeas, with a terryiaki sauce and encased in a freshly baked bun. I would never usually eat vegeburgers, but Maya provides the exception that proves the rule. She always has a new cake up her sleeve and loves to give a modern twist to Swedish and Danish classics. Maya singlehandedly bakes all her products on-site, unlike other local bakeries. I find myself wishing that there were more truly independent and unique businesses such as Cafe Rosa at Torvehallerne.

I got tipped about this cafe from a Japanese friend that this cafe is owned by a Japanese. Having…read morethe famous Japanese bakery Andersen in mind, I went to try out this cafe in Torvehallen. At a first glance, it seems there is some sort of Swedish connection. First, they have lussekatter - the saffran twisted buns that the Swedes eat during the advent weeks. Second, they have the famous Astrid Lindgren's character Pippi Longstocking everywhere, including on their serving mugs. I didn't really find out about the Swedish connection later, but we did try the lussekatter that my Swedish boyfriend approved. As for me, I wouldn't know the difference between a bad lussekatter or a good lussekatter since I have only consumed this baked goods once or twice before. So, I guess the lussekatter is Swedish-approved, sort of. The warm chocolate that I ordered was also delightful. It was probably a little small for 40kr, but I could tell that they made it from scratch, as how it should be instead of just pushing buttons on some machines. I guess this place is a nice alternative to the more popular Granny House on the corner. As we were ready to leave, we saw the Japanese baker made some more of the lussekatter to put in the oven. At least I know that these things are truly homemade, and that's the way it should be.

Items Selected: Oatmeal Bread…read moreMuseli Bar Spandauer Tebirke Cinnamon Roll Independently owned in Valby, the store tucked away on the inner sidewalk of a park, Vores Brød kicked off an early Thursday en route to Sweden by way of Copenhagen Central Station, the doors unlocked at 07h00 with a great waft of yeast quickly greeting guests who'd been waiting and the young woman behind the counter ready to answer questions though the majority of the morning's lot was still on racks with prices and descriptions nowhere to be seen. Small in footprint and even more condensed in customer space, the ovens and countertops taking up the bulk of the store with no seating indoors or out, it was instead with two warm bags in hand that a collection of five treats was taken to a small bench in the park to be enjoyed, first bites of an Organic Oatmeal Roll showing a good crust and chewy interior full of toasty notes while the Tebirke to follow unfortunately saw almost the entire shellacking of Poppy Seeds fall to the ground during the first bite, the lost balance to a thick layer of Butter and Sugar filling leaving the pastry sort of one note and not unlike a Kouign Amann without the caramelization. Saving the rest for a snack while waiting for the train to Malmo, the goods cooling slightly but still warm to touch, Vores Brød showed well in terms of both the Cinnamon Roll and Custard Danish, the former perhaps a bit overworked and thus a bit stiff but still well flavored while the later banked on a butter instead of sweetness around gooey Egg Custard, the final bites invested in a chewy bar of Museli that was half-dipped in Chocolate with the other side sort of dull, devoid of sweetness save for a few Raisins and mostly tasting of Pumpkin or Sunflower Seeds.
