This year I learned about seed libraries!…read more Found out online that this location has a seed library (the only one I've found in Placer County) so I stopped by this week. But before making the drive out here, I decided to call and verify that they did have one. The person who answered the phone (I think her name was Dorothy) was very friendly and upbeat. She said that yes, they do have a seed library and that it was right next to the front desk. It was my first experience ever with a seed library so it was quite interesting. Basically the library gives away free seeds! At this location, they have these little drawers with labeled packets of seeds and you just write in the binder which seed packets you're taking (limit 5). They also have nice little color brochures with a planting calendar for Placer County. Took my 5 little packets home and was feeling pretty excited. I just got 5 free packets of seeds! :) Got home and decided to start some bell pepper seeds. Opened the packet that was labeled "California Wonder Sweet Peppers" and was startled to find little black seeds inside. While I'm no master gardener, I do know what bell pepper seeds look like and these definitely were not it. I compared them to my broccoli and cabbage seeds, that looked slightly similar, but these black seeds were of a different size. Figured somehow they had just gotten mislabeled and it might be an adventure to plant these mystery seeds and see what plant pops up. :P Decided to start some eggplant seeds so I opened the second packet labeled "Long purple eggplant." Inside the packet consisted of 5 seeds--2 black, 3 cream/yellow. What the?! The cream/yellow ones could pass for eggplant seeds (or even possibly bell pepper seeds) but they were definitely not little black seeds like the two inside this packet. And why would ONE variety consist of two different types of seeds? I then realized the seed library would probably not be the best place to get accurately-labeled seeds. You might want a bell pepper plant and end up getting a basil plant instead. But hey, it's free, right? Another thing that concerned me was that on their website, they suggest that you plant the seeds and then save some seeds and return them to the library. In my experience, there's a lot of cross pollination that goes on with plants so you can't really save seeds from your plant and expect it to be the exact same variety. *shrug* Maybe their seeds somehow don't get cross-pollinated or something? But anyways, it was a fun experience to see a Placer County seed library. We'll see if anything grows from the seeds!

The natural light coming from the large windows makes long study days feel less confining. I feel comfortable leaving my belongings at my table while I use the restroom. It's a risk to take unless you ask one of the many kind people around to watch your stuff. There are also study rooms for rent. I haven't used them, but I'm happy to have the option. The parking lot can get packed quick due to the fitness center, nearby parks, and other library goers.

Adj: informative and sufficiently comprehensive…read more An older branch of the Roseville libraries, but a good one! I've been here once before a couple of years ago, but recently, we wanted to stop by again. The library is NOT part of the Placer County library system, which was pointed out to me (I already knew, but it was good to be reminded) as I signed up for a Roseville library card! Did you know that as a CA resident that you can sign up for a library card at locations NOT in your county/city of residence? Yup, you do have to return physical items to one of the branches of whatever library system you borrow from, BUT if you were just using their e-materials like Libby or Hoopla, then it's NO problem! So I decided I wanted another library card, so I quickly applied online (short form) and then went up to the information desk and the librarian/assistant attentively helped me right away and gave me an overview of Roseville's library offerings as well as rules and regulations (and fees/fines). Unlike many other library systems, they DO have late fees here, but I don't plan to borrow physical books or any other kinds of tangible materials, so I won't have to worry about that. Onto the library itself. One side is books for adults (I hesitate to write adult books lest people misunderstand, lol) and there are many shelves of grown up books, so their collection seems quite comprehensive. Next, there's a shelf of Friends of the Library books for sale, not a whole lot, but a respectable amount. Then there's the kids section on the opposite side of the library, and there's a good amount of book stacks on shorter shelves that do not block the view of kids which I finally noticed is the case at like all libraries, lol. Not sure why I never made that connection before. It's a smaller children's area than other libraries, but they tried to make it more cheerful w/more colorful furniture and decorations/posters on the walls. There are also kids' computers that only kids can use so that's good. Finally, there's a community room that's pretty big for meetings and if you want to have a private event or party, it seems you can rent it for reasonable rates (see pics). Outside of that room, there's a courtyard, but I didn't see a way to get out there as the door leading out was locked, maybe it's only for staff to hang out and eat lunch in? I'm not sure, but that meeting room has a lot of nice natural light streaming in b/c of the floor to ceiling windows. Overall, this is an older, but well maintained and kind of quaint library next to Maidu Community Center which is inside the Maidu Regional Park (which I've not yet explore, maybe next time). PS - obligatory bathroom visit: clean, but older, some rust on the metal doors/walls, could use an update on some of the facilities, but everything was functional.

There are many great outdoor sites nearby (including my own lovely 3 acres in Applegate) for the ceremony, but you need a nice air conditioned indoor site for your reception, especially in the summertime when Sacramento hits 100 degrees F. Applegate Civic Center Club is at 2100 ft. elevation, which places it "Above The Fog" (wintertime) and "Below The Snow". Many times over the years, we've had parties at this facility....most of them for our young daughter in the form of birthday parties. One time, it was around March 5th (daughter's b-day), and it was 42 degrees and foggy in the Flatlands, but at the Civic Center it was a nice balmy 60+ degrees and sunny! Similarly in the summer, we've had events here when Sac was 104 degrees F, while it was a comfortable 96 degrees in Applegate. The air conditioners at Applegate Civic Center were recently installed, making the building much more comfortable than the old Swamp Cooler. They recently remodeled kitchen and the floors, and new windows and acoustical treatment was recently applied to the ceilings to improve the sound. Overall, an excellent budget wedding venue. For brides that want to save on the wedding reception facility, Applegate Civic Center is only available on Saturdays (8 am to 11 pm) and Sundays (8 am to 11 pm). Having rented this facility in the past I would have given it 3 stars but having completed a recent walk-thru, I'm really impressed and the price is right: only $200 per day, $125 security deposit. Because of the price and the newly improved quality of this wedding facility, I'm giving them 4 stars. One of my neighbors recently used the same venue for a family party, and they were completely satisfied with the results.
