I was a patient of Doctor Jacobs for many years. Probably since the time when he opened the "Designs in Dentistry" office in Folsom. There are many dentists. Because people have too many problems with their teeth. I am one of them. But there are a few DENTISTS who deserve to be named in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. DOCTOR JACOBS is a MASTER of teeth and beautiful smiles. His LIFE EXPERIENCE, TALENT and HUMAN KINDNESS continue to serve people of Folsom and Sacramento area. If Dr. Jacobs is your dentist I would NEVER let him do a root canal on you. In October 2010 Dr. Jacobs did a bungled root canal on me, only drilling one canal, not properly sealing it, and not referring me to an endodontist to complete the job. He had been a trusted dentist for many years and I had no reason to question his work or ask for another opinion. I knew little about root canals. The receptionist read to me what was on my chart from that incident and it said he couldn't access the second canal because it required removing the crown and the tooth may become symptomatic. I should have been referred out to a more competent dentist. Now I am probably going to lose that tooth after years of chronic infections in that root. It is costing me thousands of dollars to try to save the tooth. I am first going to have an apicoectomy with an edodontist and if that doesn't work I am going to have to get the tooth out and have an implant or a bridge. I sent Dr. Jacobs a certified letter asking him to pay for just my out of pocket costs because of his poor work. He never responded. The California Dental Association will conduct a peer review and attempt to get compensation for the patient but only if the original work was in the last three years. It's important that you have a general dentist who knows his limitations and uses referral sources like periodontists and endodontists for more complicated issues. Some like Dr. Jacobs don't want to lose that business to someone else and do procedures they do not have the competence to do. read more

I'm still paying for Dr. Jacob's shoddy work. After he bungled my root canal and didn't send me to a specialist when he didn't have the skill to finish the job, I have had continuing trouble and expense. The tooth got infected. I went to an endodontist for a $2000 procedure to try to save the tooth but that didn't work. Now I'm spending $6000 for an implant after the tooth had to be extracted. Dr. Jacobs needs to recognize his own limitations and not attempt procedures he is unqualified to do. Be very careful with this guy. There are nots of dentists to choose from. I would never go to him again for anything. read more

BEWARE. I've been coming here since 2009 NO MORE! They are shady, shady shady. I was out-of-network the whole time, yet they told me "they accept Aetna". Here is the problem, Aetna doesn't "accept" them...they have no contract with Aetna. This practice is disgusting & deceitful, in my opinion. I received several estimates for mouth guards and always questioned why they were so expensive. Even then, no mention of being "Out of Network" they would just say, "your insurance isn't covering a lot of it"...I always thought I had bad insurance. When I called the office for an explanation the woman on the phone had the nerve to tell me, "Out of Network and In Network costs are the same a lot of the time". No they aren't, that is why In Network is better. They never once acted as if they had done something wrong. I guess that is what you get when you trust people, always double check because saying they "Accept" your insurance doesn't mean anything anymore apparently. read more

These Guys are Awesome!!! The doctors and staff at Designs in Dentistry are Awesome!!!!! I have always been very nervous about going to the dentist but not anymore. Now from the time I walk in their beautiful state of the art facility and I'm greeted with friendly smile I feel at ease. Dr. Jacobs always takes time to make sure I know everything about the procedure he's going to do at that appointment and that I am comfortable before moving forward. After my procedure Dr. Jacobs personally called me to follow-up and make sure that i was fine and feeling good. I don't get that from any of my other me practioners. Let's face it no one likes going to the dentist. I had a broken tooth and I knew it would catch up to me so I had to go in. I was introduced to Dr, Van Pham by a friend. She took me in, took X-rays and showed me what she found, went over all my options and 2 hours later I was out of there with 2 cavities fixed and my teeth cleaned. I've gotta give her thumbs up on how gentle she was. Didn't feel any paint and the best of all she cracked a couple of jokes and made it fun. I'd highly recommend her to anyone that is looking for a new dentist. She's awesome read more

I was very disappointed with Dr. Hovina and her misdiagnosis of my condition. As a result of a childhood accident, I had three root canals and crowns on my front teeth done at Designs in Dentistry over 20 years ago. Dr. Ortner did a fantastic job. Recently I started experiencing pain in my front teeth and went to Dr. Hovina for a consult. She completely misdiagnosed my condition as a vertical root fracture in one of my teeth and gave me a very grim prognosis. I left her office in a state of panic. She was completely wrong. I consulted a endodontist and he said I had a mild infection. There was no vertical root fracture. I do need to get implants due to reabdorption but it's in a completely different tooth. I have no trust in Dr. Hovina and will not return for the implant crowns. read more

Dr. Jacobs has been my dentist since I started and has been the best dentist I've ever had. The hygienists are fast and make a cleaning easy and painless. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I have been a patient at Designs in Dentistry for many years and have been VERY impressed with the entire operation and in particular, that of my dentist, Dr. Ortner. He has always fully explains any proceedures and gives me options for treatment.Dr.Ortner also has excellent bedside manner following up after hours to see how I am feeling. On several occasions he has made himself available on his day off or after hours for emergencies. As a professional, he goes above and beyond the call, in my opinion. Additionally, his staff is always very clear about appointment bookings and my experience is that all charges are detailed and fully explained. If I have any questions regarding billing, (which is seldom) they have always been handled to my complete satisfaction. They are also very proactive in reminding me when it is time to come in and do everything they can to accomodate my busy schedule. Combine this "high touch" level of service with high tech, knowledgeable and caring dentistry practiced by Dr. Ortner and his partner Dr. Jacobs and you have a winning combination all around! Dr Ralph Jacobs is an exceptional dental professional. He has done crowns and bridges for me and his craftsmanship has been flawless. He is not only very meticulous and professional, but he is also highly conscientious and consultative, not to mention very candid and genuine. Long time patient of Dr. Ortner and was a very happy patient. But he sold his practice to Dr. Pham who completely misdiagnosed me and went from a cracked tooth, to a crown to a root canal. The crown diagnosis came after I was told I needed 4 fillings immediately Note: I visited Dr. Ortner every 6 months and no issues. The tooth that ultimately ended up needing a root canal became inflamed and the whole process was extremely painful and horrifying because even after many adjustments I was still in pain. It took 6 months for the tooth to calm down. And, my new dentist said those four fillings that she insisted I needed to be filled immediately are non-existent. read more
