Dosa
Ron J.

If you are looking for authentic yummy south Indian food then this is the place to come. I have been coming here from long and have tried most of their dosas and each one of them are too notch. Is this the place to bring a date? No It is inside the Indian grocery store and there is limited seating and nothing fancy. But this place is all about good food.

Dosa (Jaipur paneer)

It's just a cafe set aside in an Indian market. It doesn't look like much, and they use all disposable plates and utensils, which I think is unfortunate. You'll find gruff employees sporadically manning the counter. However, a fair comparison for this place is not to some fine dining establishment, but to a fast food takeout joint. In that niche, Amma is a winner. This place offers a menu that seemed a bit wider than the other location in Vienna, and I finally took the chance to try a Jaipur paneer dosa, a large lentil-based crepe with spiced cheese filling. Honestly, I am not a big fan of their sambar (the soup used for dipping), but the dosa itself was crispy and the filling aromatic and hearty. Even this rather substantial item was under $10 with tax; everything here is cheap, vegetarian, and delicious. They haven't marked their menu for vegan or gluten-free, but given that trace ingredients may be present, they do have options for both. Of the twenty or so people that were eating in this small space while I was there, I was the only non-Asian, which is both a good sign (in that it must be decent food) and a bad thing (in that most of America still has not discovered the exciting world of South Indian cuisine). Some years ago, there was apparently an Amma Vegetarian Kitchen in the heart of Georgetown. I know rent is high in this town, but I really wish they'd come back to the District. We could use more of this.

Ordered chana bhatura and onion rava masala dosa. We got the food quickly and it was really yummy. The bhatura was soft and not too oily. Really loved the sambhar, full of veggies and fresh.

This Cafe is attached to the aditi spice depot grocery! The Cafe is so neatly maintained, quick service and much better overall that the Vienna Amma kitchen! We got the idli, dosa and pooris! The idlis were excellent steaming hot, freshly made and so tasty with the sambar! Ghee roast dosa was great too and so was pooris! Everything was so hot served! Reasonably priced!

Amma's feast, all for under $10.

This is my go to place for Indian vegetarian food. It's literally right across the street from my office, so anytime I'm craving some healthy, cheap and quick vegetarian dishes, I drop on by. Amma's attached to a grocery store and upon entering through the little screen door, you're greeted with very low key, nondescript cafe. It's also usually really busy, full of Indian people. That's when you know it's legit. I usually get Amma's feast. For a little under $10, you get 6 little containers of basically all their curries and veggie dishes, including the sour yogurt and sweet dessert with taro and raisins. You're also treated to a little plastic cup of a very tart chutney (I think it's tamarind rinds or something). It packs a sour kick but balances well with the other rich side dishes. Their Dosas are also awesome. They're crispy and loaded with potato filling and come with a nice lentil dipping side. I'm pretty sure I fucked up most of my descriptions of the food but I just go and get what looks good. It all looks good and tastes fantastic. If ever in Reston/Herndon, stop on by. It's well worth it!

Fresh and warm, they had a crispy crust and a soft interior. They resembled mini ciabattas and were scrumptious with the butter. The salmon en croute blew me away! It was of the best dishes I've ever had. The salmon melted in my mouth, and the puff pastry was still crisp. I loved the flavorful sauce; it made the dish even better. The steak frites were just ok. The steak was cooked to my preference, but it was bland. The fries were amazing, though. Crunchy yet fluffy. I wish the steak came with a sauce, like the one served with the salmon en croute. The service was good overall, and they were attentive. The ambiance was lovely - cozy and romantic. I can't wait to come back for the rolls and the salmon en croute, and to try their other dishes! Highly, highly recommend La Bonne Vie!

Instead, I walked into what felt like a scene straight out of Ratatouille--an intimate Parisian French Bistro escape hidden in plain sight. Everything was exceptional: the ambiance, the service, and especially the food. Candlelit tables and soft French music from the 1950s and '60s filled the room, creating one of the most romantic settings I've experienced in a long time. The only thing missing was my beautiful wife! I couldn't believe I had the restaurant almost entirely to myself. I'm certainly not complaining--it made the evening feel even more special. Like Anton Ego discovering that unforgettable plate of ratatouille, every bite reminded me that truly memorable food doesn't require a professional critic's approval. It simply needs to make you feel something--and this meal absolutely did. From the incredible food and attentive service to the charming, romantic atmosphere, this restaurant earned a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. If you haven't been yet, bring someone special and experience it for yourself. You won't regret it!

There's a ton of treats to look at and this location tries to offer a gluten free option for the wheat intolerant. You can order a dole soft serve with toppings! The cinnamon rolls are large, similar to Cinnabon, and you can add different toppings, which is a unique touch. I ordered a regular cinnamon roll and one of their signature rolls with fruit. The main issue for me was the taste. Instead of that usual balance of cinnamon and sugar, the rolls tasted more like buttered bread, and they were a bit bland. The frosting didn't help either. It was just a big glob on top, not well distributed. That said, the place was pretty busy, so a lot of people do seem to enjoy it. I guess it's one of those spots you'll need to try for yourself to see if its your taste.

Very interesting concept as this place seems to be more of a dessert shop, I am curious on how good the viet food is.. maybe one day! I ordered the valentine bingsu which consist of a bunch of fruit and vanilla ice cream. The bingsu was advertised with "milky ice flavor" which I did not taste the "milky" part. The shredded ice was a great consistency, though! Easy to scoop up, melts fast, & not ice-y which to me is crucial to a decent bingsu. The strawberries paired were great and very sweet, the peach felt like it was from a can, pineapple gave off canned vibes, except it was extremely bitter and basically gone bad. Mangoes were OK not very sweet and Vanilla ice cream was good but you can't go wrong with that if it's store-bought. Overall would give this a 5/10 maybe 4.5/10. You order on the kiosk or at the counter. I opted for the kiosk as the employees were busy, I did however asked at the counter to Change my order after once I realized they had the valentine bingsu since I was feeling more fruit desserts (originally ordered the strawberry & cream). They were accommodating which I appreciated! Service was nice for the most part - the guy that served me my order did not acknowledge me when I said thank you... or when we took him the dish after the food and said thanks again lol service can be spotty based on who you get I guess? Again Curious on the viet food here!

Instead, a random guy who had been sitting in the front suddenly left, went to the back, and came out with our order. While handing it to us, he touched himself inappropriately beforehand, which was very unhygienic and off-putting. Overall, the experience felt unprofessional and unsanitary. I definitely expected better from this location.

We ordered the red velvet, cookies and cream, s'mores, triple chocolate, and one other basic cookie. The cookies and cream, red velvet, and s'mores were all premium cookies and much better than the normal ones. Highly recommend those 3. We wanted the Reese's cookie but they didn't have any already baked so we would have had to wait an additional 15 mins so we went with the red velvet instead. You can also order cookies to be fresh baked but it says it'll take about 20-25 mins for that. The service was super friendly and helpful. My wife also really just wanted a cup of the whipped cream and the employee was super kind and gave her one. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating but felt cramped due to the volume of people inside on Saturday night.
