Formerly known as Appletree Halal serves Authentic Pakistan cuisine smackdab in the middle of Genesee Street with Bold Spices. Getting here was no easy feat after I wrapped up an important meeting on Elm Street and then walked over here through Broken sidewalks littered with garbage and broken Glass scattered around. Took me a little over half an hour to get over here and I was just 2 Blocks away from Fillmore. I walked in to find that it was completely dead with a Pakistan Family preparing the Daily Lunch specials while also doing some Cleaning. I went up and selected their Goat Masala Curry with Rice with Naan Bread and a Sunkist Orange Soda. They put it in a separate Bowl instead of placing it on top of the Rice but then I realized that the pieces were Bone in. So I picked the pieces off one by one and then integrated them into the Rice, with Each bite that I took I could pick up that potent spice that lingers on my taste Buds with that exotic Fragrance that hits your Nose. The Meat was amazingly Tender, the Rice was al dente and mixed well with the Curry. I personally wished that there was more meat as I believe I only got a dozen Pieces, I thought there should've been a bit more. The Naan Bread was Buttery & Fluffy, really light that sopped up any sauce that was left on my Plate, the soda was refreshing & fizzy to help try and restrain the Fire that was in my Mouth. Overall the Food and service were really good, the Staff was very friendly but it was kind of hard for me to understand them with their Accents. This is one of those Restaurants where the Cuisine is not known to some people but draws you in to try their Unique Offerings. They serve Chicken, Lamb, Goat & Fish just with Pakistan Flare, my advice to you would go and try it, you may like it or you may not. A coworker found this gem today through Yelp. We are high school teachers in the home stretch and it's Regent's week. We're tired and hungry! What a fantastic place! Definitely not fancy or overdone, but man, the food!!! The first thing I noticed upon entering was budgies chirping upstairs and fire detectors chirping in the main room. Thankfully, I do not care about these things. The person behind the counter was speaking to someone else and did not acknowledge us right away. Thankfully, I realize that I am not the center of the universe and can wait my turn. We checked out the menu for a while, then placed our orders. We were told it would take around 20 minutes. It did. It was worth it. The butter chicken was amazing. Easily the best I have ever had. Naan was soft and fresh with crispy bits and sesame seeds on top. Veggie Samosas were a little spicier than I have had previously. I like these better. The Palak Paneer was super spinachy and perfectly spiced with chunks of what appeared to be homemade cheese interspersed. The enormous about of falafel you receive for an appetizer portion was crispy and delicious, and the garlic sauce set it off perfectly. When we were just getting ready to roll ourselves out the door, the man who took our order came out with little bowls of dessert. I have no idea what it is actually called...like rice pudding had a baby with almond paste and coconut. It was delicious and tipped me just over the edge to food coma. :-) (I still ate it all.) I ordered from here through Grubhub and was not disappointed. Overall, the food tasted great, had a lot of flavor, and was provided with a nice portion size. My order was supposed to take 50 minutes but it only took 30 which was great because I was hungry. I ordered a few items and I have enough food to last a few days. Chicken Over Rice: I got the small but it was definitely enough for 2 portions. It was ok but it wasn't what I expected. The red sauce tasted like hot sauce and the white sauce tasted like mayonnaise (not the usual flavor you would expect). You get a spoon full of salad, a nice about of chicken and a lot of rice. Goat Curry Over Rice: This was probably my favorite. The sauce was so good and had a nice spice to it. There was enough sauce and meat for the amount of rice you get which was perfect. Great portion for the price. Chana Masala: Since this is chickpeas and sauce, this is a great vegetarian dish. The sauce was a bit spicy but had a great flavor. Vegetable Biryani: For $6 you get a lot of rice. I love the flavor by itself and it went great with the chana masala. Chicken Salad: So much chicken and very little lettuce. The chicken was really good though. There's also cucumbers and red onions in it. It was a great addition to the meal. Overall, I was happy with my order. The food is very oily so that is something to take into consideration. Luckily, they packaged it properly and the person that delivered my food handled it well. They wrapped the chana masala in saran wrap which I'm glad they did because oil would have been everywhere. Try it out when you get a chance. This is my first review ever! I came from Philadelphia to this city for the first time. I was extremely hungry & based on the reviews i went there. Absolutely the worst experience & food poisoning of my life. Order a Goat karhahi and lamb chops along with Channas which were ready (microwaved) in 8 minutes total. That was really unusual as a fresh Goat karhahi takes an hour to make & lamb chops take atleast 30-45 minutes. The goat karhahi was so disgusting & the lamb chops were so dry they were not edible. When i told the cashier/cook about the lambchops he became really defensive & said "how can it be dry when we made them last night!" I dont know how this place has 4 something rating when it's the most disgusting restaurant i have ever been in. If you still want to eat there despite my warning, have at it but don't complain later about food poisoning or digusting feeling in your stomach after. Very pricey for such disgusting food. I don't care if i sound like a Karen but this restaurant needs to shut down asap!!!! read more

Formerly Appletree but with the same menu. Looks like a name change only. I go back and forth between Desi Khabba and Alibaba Kebab, almost weekly. Desi has better curries and rice and Alibaba has better kebabs and naan. Both are great and in my opinion are the two best curry spots in Buffalo (way better than India Gate or Taj if you are okay with Pakistani style curries (generally have more oil than Indian curries). I highly recommend the chicken biryani and the chicken achari curry. The achari is my favorite curry in Buffalo. Portions are massive and the small curry is more than enough for one person. Note: if you order using Doordash they don't have bread listed on the app. Just order a mango lassi and put that you want naan in the instructions. They'll call you if there are any issues. They are very friendly and communicative. Bonus, the food always arrives quickly and piping hot. read more

This is a preliminary review -- I can't wait to try this place again! In an effort to discover more businesses on the East Side of Buffalo, I stopped by yesterday. Appletree is an international convenience/grocery store with Pakistani and Arabic food available. Generally, they have: chicken curry, goat/lamb dishes, fried rice, chicken wings and even halal pizza. This is all at the counter, already pre-made, waiting to be served in chafing dishes. Prices are super reasonable. $5.50 with tax for a generous portion of chicken curry with Arabic fired rice. There is one table so if you want to eat inside the convenience / grocery store, you can. When I came in, the table wasn't clean but the owner came out from behind the counter and wiped it down without me asking. The chicken curry was delicious, although I'm generally not a huge fan of chicken curry that doesn't use boneless chicken and the curry here does have bones, so watch out. The curry included peas and potatoes and had a flavorful and spicy kick. The fried rice was out of this world! It was fried Arabic style with a mix of spices that gave it a delicious edge and a bit of heat. If you're looking for a drink, I highly recommend heading to the fridge area and picking up the "wellmade" mango drink. It's delicious and you can taste the nectar of the mango. The drink is imported from Turkey and it was so refreshing. This is a cool market / restaurant that I'm looking forward to returning to. They also sell various chocolates from Italy (hello, for Valentine's Day?), and a wide variety of ethnic products. The East Side of Buffalo is full of hidden gems -- I'm reminded of a variety of NYC businesses when I come here. If only it was open 24/7 like many similar-places in NYC, I could see myself coming here for a late night Pakistani craving. Location is, interesting. Food is straight-forward and good. Something for everyone, really. They even added some fried chicken to their menu and honestly it was better than any fried chicken I've had. They seemed to be very enthusiastic about being able to pull off the recipe for it and I'm happy to report that I'll be going back for some. I've pretty much tried everything on their menu. I like all of it. Specially the tandoori chicken (bone-in). Goes great with some fresh (salt sprinkled) tomato slices and a butter naan. With respect to the rice and the curries, if you're not used to spicy (not necessarily hot, just warm spices) or oily food then these items may not be for you, so please be aware of that. Hands-down the best place to go for Nihari (beef stew) and tandoori Naan !! We were craving traditional Pakistani breakfast, had halwa, puri and Chana curry and Nihari. This place hit the spot!! The Portions were good and prices were reasonable. Not an extensive menu but whatever is available is usually cooked fresh daily, so once it's gone, it's gone. Really neat little place. Met a friend here for dinner. I have only had halal food maybe twice before so I can't comment on the quality of it compared to anywhere else, but I enjoyed the food. The menu was not posted super conspicuously, but the host helped me pick out a mix of food. Seating is ample and nicely spread out. There's a little prayer booth, which I have not seen before, thought that was a nice touch. The place isn't beautiful, it looks like there's some work being done. Omg!!! Love this place!! The food is so good considering they are mostly a steam-table service restaurant. The flavors are SPOT ON...hands down. Whole spices are present in all their food (So be careful!) and represent their attention to the quality of their food. I used to live in NYC and frequented many Pakistani-cabbie take out restaurants and this place is just as good if not better! Their Naan is baked on site!! The only complaint is that i often dont know if the size dish i want is understood. I have gotten large when i wanted small...and small when i wanted larger...not a huge deal. read more

I walked into Appletree today. Shortly after that, another customer walked in after me. The gentleman at the register was on the phone, apparently taking an order. He did not even acknowledge either of us, nor did he say "one moment", or indicate "just a sec" to us. He completely ignored us, his CUSTOMERS. After he was done with his call, he input some information on the register, printed a receipt of some sort, and headed back to the kitchen. During ALL of this, he did not even LOOK at us, his CUSTOMERS. Let me put it this way: If I am a PAYING customer, at least look at me, or greet me when I enter the store. Don't completely ignore not one, but TWO different customers; acting as if you favor us, your CUSTOMERS, by allowing US to PAY YOU our money, and to give YOU our business. This place is amazing. It's authentic middle eastern food. Being middle eastern myself, it comes close to my family's cooking. It's so good.

The food here is pretty good (not too spicy!!) and the atmosphere is one of the better ones for most Pakistani restaurants. The beef curry is super flavorful and mildly spicy and the mash daal is incredible! The naan is made fresh to order and truly is the thing that ties everything together. The space is rather large and has so much potential, I really wish they would do something with it! read more

I ordered takeout from here this past weekend and I am so glad to have tried this place! It is on the East Side of Buffalo and my friend and I ordered their curry combo that comes with 4 naan, 2 curries, and a big box of rice. It took about 10-15 minutes to get our food. We upgraded the naan to garlic naan and weren't even charged extra! The naan was a little too "garlicky" but the curries were fantastic as was the rice. I also ordered two chicken samosas, they were okay, a little stale. We were able to eat all this food for almost 3 meals within two days. The first two were outstanding. Totally full of flavor, and with tender delicious meat. The beef kabobs tho were dry and charred and just not at all what i was expecting. The other minus is the location of this place... its a little sketch, so while i would like to declare it my new favorite and go back all the time I somehow dont think we'll be making it out here quite as often as I'd like. For best and fresh quality food you have to go around lunch time. Biryani was good. I think they cooked the meat separately from the rice. This is typically done but the rice and chicken generally are mixed together well before serving. The flavors in biryani flow between the rice and meat. Portion size was great. The kabob wraps were amazing. The naan seemed to be baked in house. For a place that already had all the food cooked ready to go, I didn't expect to wait 15 minutes to get my order. Stopped in after finding this place on Yelp and so glad I did. It's located on Gennesee in a no frills neighborhood, but nothing to be intimidated by. The inside is clean with plenty of seating, which we took advantage of. On this Monday night my mom and I were the only ones in the place, but that didn't matter because the food was delicious. I got chicken biryani. The chicken (bone in) was so flavorful and tender. The rice, oh the rice, was so tender and tasty. My mom got chicken and rice and hers was equally delicious. Her chicken was boneless and cut up into small chunks with a BBQ and yogurt sauce drizzled over it. Service was friendly and the prices fair for the portions given.
