When you are driving through West Texas on I-10 your options to eat and sleep are limited with just a few small towns available. Van Horn is one of those. It is located at the extreme western edge of the Central Time Zone. I chose Desert Inn for my overnite stay based on reviews that I had read. All I was looking for was a shower and a bed because I was arriving late and leaving early. Making the reservation and checking in were very easy and friendly. The people who work here are very nice. Upon arrival and getting my key, I noticed that this property is a one story motel where all the rooms are in a old style courtyard layout with parking directly in front of each room which makes loading and unloading easy. Also, the parking lot was well lit making the property feel very safe. My room was clean and orderly along with the bathroom. It had a TV and window ac/heater unit that both worked fine. Yes the room is very basic but everything was well kept. The bathroom only has a shower and my only complaint with the room was there. There was no soap dish in the shower and the shampoo and soap packets in the bathroom are very minimalistic. I would recommend bringing your own if possible. If it weren't for those two shortcomings, I would rate this stay at a 4. Also this motel is close to the train tracks directly behind it. While I could here trains passing with a slight rumble, the ac/heater unit drowned out the noise and the trains did not blow their horn while passing through. I would be glad to stay here again and recommend it if you want to save a few bucks. read more

This is a small, out of the way motel, and I stumbled upon it because I was extremely tired, and wanting somewhere cheap to sleep. This place happened to fit the criteria, so I came in. The room was very basic, and I mean basic. It was just a bed and some basic amenities. The good thing about it, was that it was clean and there were no bugs to be seen during my overnight stay. WiFi was fast and free as well. Perfect for my stay. Unfortunately, the shower didn't work the next morning, and I had to leave to my destination without taking one. Other than that, it was a nice stay. Perfect for an overnighter. read more

Our car rental car broke down so we needed to stay in Van Horn Texas for the night. Many of the other hotels were already booked because of the holiday weekend. This place had decent reviews and had a room open. It was clean and it provided us what we needed for the night and it was at a great price. The man at front desk was really nice and friendly. The outside of the motel looks very old school but the rooms are a delightful surprise. Absolutely immaculate with an updated bathroom and one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in while traveling. The staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions on where to eat. We were driving through Texas on the Interstate on the way to San Antonio and it got very late. We got off the highway to look for a hotel and everything was booked up. Another hotel suggested we try the Desert Inn. We got the last room in town. I was a little scared seeing this place late at night. My imagination got the best of me! But it surprised me in a good way! Very clean, fantastic nights sleep on the wonderful mattress. The towels are fluffy and smell nice. No hairs anywhere. No frills. But so inexpensive--its nice to save money for a change! And lovely gentleman that owned the place. I'd stay there again! Thank you! read more

Excellent place to stop for a rest while traveling. Very clean room with a refrigerator and microwave. Had dinner at the Cactus Cantina and was not disappointed - good food, cold beer, friendly service. The Pilot Travel Center nearby is open 24/7 if you need anything. Pros: Staff was friendly and room smelled and looked clean. They had the air conditioner running so it was nice and cool when we checked in late at night. Wi-Fi was free and I was able to connect and stream a Netflix video at 11 PM (after four failed attempts to log in). HOWEVER: this is a small off the road motel, not a chain. The beds were extremely mushy. Instead of using fitted sheets on the full-size beds, they put a second sheet underneath, which slid and rolled up during the night as I tossed and turned. So I ended up partly sleeping directly on the mattress that everybody else had slept on. Bathroom fan was extremely rusted and sound like a dying airplane engine when your first turned it on. I've included a picture. Bottom line for me: I think this is a safe place to stay if you are in a big hurry, but I didn't feel comfortable with it overall and will probably not return here. This is a traditional late 1940's, early 1950's roadside motel. Given this reality, and the owners' need to have cost-cutting decor, the owners have done a really good job. My room had a spacious refrigerator and a microwave too, and it seemed really clean. It was $58 including all taxes and fees. read more

Stayed here February, 2017. I had just spent two nights in the Guadalupe Mountains. I wanted a place where I could shower, shave, get warm and get a good nights sleep. This place was perfect. It's not the Hilton, and it's starting to show its age, but everything was clean, everything worked, the water was hot, the bed was not uncomfortable, no funky smells and the price was certainly right. My only complaint was the train, but I think most of Van Horn is by the train tracks, so maybe it isn't fair to score them down because of that. I'm heading back to the Guadalupe's in the near future, and when I pass through Van Horn again, I'll be staying at the Desert Inn. read more

This review is a little less than a year after I stayed at the Desert Inn. I am in the area again now, but this time in Alpine. Reminded me to review the Desert Inn. I wasn't on Yelp last year. The owner and staff at Desert Inn were very nice. The room was very basic, but was clean and comfortable. The price was very low, and the location was perfect for a nights rest before hiking Guadalupe Peak. If I ever go through Van Horn again, I will stay at the Desert Inn. I have stayed at the Desert Inn motel twice now, and each time, I have received a wonderful night's sleep! The owner/manager is super nice, and I have been greatly impressed at the simple but more than adequate accommodations. The rooms include a comfortable bed, a microwave, flat screen television, small fridge, and an area where one can use a computer. I have stayed at several motels in Van Horn, but none have compared with the bed's comfort, especially at the Desert Inn's low nightly rate. Coffee is available in the morning, but no breakfast although that doesn't bother me. This will be my go-to motel for this area for sure! read more

My YELP grading is based on how well an establishment fulfills its mission. The Desert Inn sets out to be no-frills, locally-owned, clean and affordable lodging; it does that well. The uber-cheap rates (two of us for $35.00) were probably based on the train tracks that run behind the place. If you need monastic silence and "free" breakfast, skip this place. But, if your aim is a good night's sleep that will give your wallet a rest, buy some ear plugs and slumber here. read more

We were tired on our way to Phoenix and decided to stop and a cheap hotel. I was surprised by the first room he had us in! Very nice for such a cheap hotel! Quiet and everything worked fine. However, we did have 2 dogs with us and they downgraded us (they made a mistake by putting us on tobviously because of the dogs) to a room on the far end. Nothing to look at but it got the job done when we were tired and needed rest. And they only charged us $5 for the dogs, total, which was nice! Nice people! Come stay here if you want a safe, quiet, cheap place to sleep for a night! Fridge, microwave, flatscreen, air, heat in rooms. Not bad for $30. read more

Very basic Hotel. Thus the low price. Staff was friendly took my reservation over the phone without a credit card. Room was clean enough and parking lot is well-lit. They definitely need to do a better job cleaning the walls and doors. Tons of hand prints around the bathroom door and the door to get in and out of the room. What a pleasant little surprise! Cheapest place to stay off that exit and probably the best! Owners go above and beyond to accommodate and are so friendly. Gave us a garbage bag to clean out our car (traveling from NY to California with two toddlers) and allowed us to leave the trash there. Super clean room that included a microwave and fridge. Everything worked and worked well. Easy access ice machine and 24hour office. Wi-Fi worked great. Can't say enough good things about this place. Skip the over priced, common named hotels and stay here. You will not be disappointed. read more
