As you drive in, you notice the office looks like an old KOA building so safe assumption that's what this park used to be. Friendly, efficient check in. They have a small cafe that serves breakfast and dinner on limited hours. It is a pretty large park, and it was pretty empty when we stayed late February. The sites and roads are red dirt and gravel. It was raining when we arrived, so it annoyingly stuck to the tires and our shoes. Our site was plenty long enough for our MH and toad, and it was mostly level. A bit tight maneuvering to get out but we were able to pull through two sites in front of us which was much easier. I-10 is far enough away that you hear the occasional tractor trailer or a dull roar. We heard one train whistle in the early evening. There is a view of the mountains on one side which we witnessed briefly before the wind and dust kicked up a fury. Verizon was 5g 3 bars and 4g 3 bars. Satellite would not be a problem. WII FI doesn't work - surprise. Nothing special but it's fine for a night. read more

Recently stayed 1 night at the Van Horn RV Resort while traveling east. The resort is large and we didn't have any trouble getting a space. Didn't use the restrooms or showers, so not able to review them. On the outside, seems to be rundown. The spaces are adequate - some of the electric pedestals and water hydrants are damaged. Easy in and out, spaces are wide and level gravel sights, and the park roads are easy to navigate. They do offer a discount for cash. I would rate this a 3 out of 5 and say that this park is adequate for an overnight stay. read more

Van Horn RV Park is a friendly, clean and welcoming RV Park. In addition to RV camp sites, they also offer tent camping. The day we arrived, they were hosting a group of 16 young adults on a 6-week long survivors trip. They were so very happy to be at a place where they could have clean showers and bathrooms. Each campsite is grassy pull throughs and full hook ups. The WiFi is poor and the TV reception is non-existent. The sites are clean and well maintained. The bathrooms and showers are clean and handy. This place also boards horses. There is a restaurant on premise that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. read more

Been coming here for years - but has gone downhill fast recently. No cable television, no WiFi, power pedestals are old and need replacement, spaces are large, but just like a large dirt parking lot. Park was an old KOA years ago, now it's just rundown. There are other nicer RV parks nearby that we'll stay in next time passing through. read more

We stopped at this park due to advertising "deluxe dog park and cafe on/site." The cafe is closed until at least 11/23. The dog park is full of burrs and a larger dagger type burr that cut one of my pup's paws. Winter has killed the weeds overgrown at each site, but the burrs remain-even on the road. Pretty much desert clay gravel-free sites. Park is completely open on right side to a less than desirable area. We stayed at many desert parks across the southwest. This was the only one that my dogs kept alerting to outside movements after midnight- until around 3 am. No highway noise but the tracks are close and those trains come through after midnight. If you need a cheap easy off/on site, this might be for you. read more

Welcome to Van Horn RV Park(?) It is well named. You pay them, then they give you the (bulls) horn! They boast of a cafe, pool, fishing pond, horse facilities, etc. 1) cafe was closed due to damage 2) pool was empty, 3) never found the "pond"....and 4) they charge you $20 per horse poop? What?! Luckily we had no horse, or fishing pole, cafe desires or swimming needs. We just wanted to plug in and rest for one night. The nightmare began. The power post was defective. The in-sight, park handyman "Ed" was dumber than the post. We spent the night in freezing cold with no power. The place is a dump. We paid $45 they would not refund. RUN! read more

Arrived after a long day of travel. Reservation was ready. Friendly office folks gave us the run down on the Kafe and TV channels tricks along with the usual. Walked up and got a raspberry cobbler to go for after dinner. Huge portion that was easily shared. Bert and Betty were tonight's cooks. Great job. Site was wide, easy to navigate. Didn't have to unhook tow car from MH. Clean park which the owners take pride in. Didn't have any goat heads on our shoes so maybe they killed all those weeds. read more

We've stayed in hundreds (yes, hundreds) of campgrounds and I was fairly impressed by this one. No longer a KOA but the employees were all very pleasant and the grounds well-kept. They have lots on long pull-through sites plenty big enough for our 40-foot motorhome and Jeep Wrangler. The water pressure was good and so was the electric. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the food smelled great. We've stayed here twice and had similar experiences both times. Another reviewer complained about the dust and the dry grass here. It's west Texas folks! It's dry and windy and all of Texas has been in draught. These folks do a nice job under difficult conditions. read more

First of all this is NO longer a KOA, now a Good Sam. I have no idea why Good Sam rating is 8 something. A one night lay over, maybe. Very dusty, contributing to that no one drives the speed limit, including all staff. One of the men's showers is down, hot water knob broken. That leaves only 2. Showers and restrooms are pretty dirty. Not sure they could be cleaned properly, just too old. Desperately needs to be remodeled. Not sure what the policy is but there are not any no smoking signs in the bathroom. So every morning you get a big lung full of smoke. Park does provide cable, which is good. The working staff are friendly and sociable. Fishing pond is among old vehicles with no tires and wheels/axels are on the ground. Also what appears to be abandoned buildings close by. An aerator would do wonders for the pond. read more

We needed somewhere to camp for the night and called to book a tent site. In our conversation, I mentioned that we will be camping in our truck so we didn't need any hook-ups like the RVs do. I said we were running behind schedule and wouldn't arrive until after they closed the office. Penny called me back about 30 mins later and said that she had upgraded us to a cabin and had the heater on already. It was supposed to be really cold that night and she said she didn't want us to freeze out there in our truck. We arrived 45 minutes after closing and she was waiting for us in the office to show us where the cabin was and the bathrooms, etc. I offered to pay the difference, but she wouldn't take it. The park is well taken care of, clean and you can see that they care a lot about providing a great space for people to stay. We will definitely stay here again. We have stayed here before. Very nice RV park in a remote location. Cable TV - They provide it. You need a co-ax cable to attach between the power pedestal and your RV. No TV from your antenna. Internet Wi-Fi - They provide it, but the system is not password protected. So use your hotspot for secure Internet. Parking spot - Ours was level each time we stayed. Nice not to use blocks under my RV wheels. Staff - Pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful; couldn't be better. Power, water and waste water - All where they should be. Texas is bad about allowing RV parks to install potable water and sewer lines in the same trench and only inches apart often the potable water spigot is close to the ground and lower than sewer connection. Diesel fuel in Van Horn - Plenty of diesel stations. Summary - Nice place to stay. read more

For those of you who have never been to or through Van Horn, the KOA (Kampgrounds of America) is a nice place to stay. The folks that run the place are very sweet. I've stayed here for a while a couple of times, and they are quite helpful, and do provide monthly rates (depending on how long you plan on staying). They are dominantly an RV park, though they have a number of tent sites, and two small bunkhouse style cabins available. The tent sites are amazingly grass covered and have charcoal grills and picnic tables, as well as some tree cover. The cabins contain a full size bed and twin size bunkbed, electric heater, air condidioning window unit, and a small TV (which gets cable). They also have wireless high speed internet access, which comes free. The KOA is just down Rt. 90 South, off of exit 140A on I-10. You'll see signs for it. There is also a cafe that serves breakfast and dinner. They also have a small 18 hole mini-golf course, pool, and swingset. The farm next door has an emu, which you'll see if you're lucky. If you're passing through Van Horn, or are on a big road trip and find yourself stopping in Van Horn for the night, consider staying at the KOA. read more

A nice KOA in West Texas. Desert heat, desert decor, desert amenities. Staff was nice, though not seeming very knowledgeable or able. Seemed like they were only around when they saw it necessary. Opted for a cabin with AC as it was rather hot and I was pretty tuckered out. It was nice and had all of the simple things we needed for a one night stay -- plus, it had a cool lock system on the door. The bathrooms? Kinda yuck. Not exactly paid attention to. Flies everywhere and the water was running constantly on almost every faucet and toilet. Probably wouldn't book another night here for a campsite, but the cabins were great. Centrally located to I-10, too. Easy peasy. read more

UPDATED 5/8/08: We've stayed at this KOA on another trip for a total of four stays. I hate to say it, but my four stars from the earlier review were premature. In the last three visits, the cabin has only had the door unlocked one time when we arrived. After we'd been in the cabin (the visit when it was unlocked) long enough to get our toddler to sleep, the manager came over and knocked loudly on the door to ask if we were the people who had reserved the cabin. Evidently people have been snatching reserved cabins. (see previous review below for the irony of that statement) The other times we had to sit outside with our tired and cranky toddler when we arrived while the office was closed for a lunch break that's worthy of Enron fame....11am to 2pm. When we did get in the cabin, it smelled like a can of right guard had exploded inside. Sweeeet! If you plan on staying here in one of the cabins, you'd better call ahead to make sure that the door will be unlocked ....even if you make reservations in advance. On this last trip, the owner/manager even came out to their truck, got in it, and left while we were sitting there 25ft away with all of our stuff stacked on the porch of the cabin. That's just crappy IMO and we won't be going back. OLD REVIEW: I'd have to second what Ephraim said. Great folks and a good place to stay. We've used the cabin since it's been a bit too wet there for our tent. They'll do an easy late check-in for you if it is requested. On our last trip through, our cabin was given away by the folks at the desk to a lady who had missed her town by 100+miles, was even on the wrong highway, and thought that she was at the Ft. Stockton KOA. Texas. Anyway, since we were forced to stay in a hotel in town, the folks at the KOA refunded our cabin charge and paid the difference between the cabin and the hotel directly to us. Good customer service and nice folks will keep us going back to this KOA. The food in the cafe is great too! read more

This is no longer a KOA. It was decent enough and peaceful, but very very dry and dusty. Everything -- and I mean everything -- was covered in a fine red dust by the time we left (and we only stayed one night). It appears as if there used to be grassy areas at the sites and around the campground when it was a KOA, but it seems the owners do not water it anymore, so it's basically all just dried up. One cool thing was all of the wild rabbits everywhere -- 100s of them! There was a nice fenced dog park area, but again, most of the grass in there has dried up since it appears they are not watering it anymore. I would say this is just a basic simple place to stay, but no extra frills really. read more

Well maintained quiet place. Just far enough off the highway but not too far. The area is all gravel without the dust. Neither while vehicles drove through nor during the wind. There is a dog park which is nice, a pond you can fish in (I actually heard fish jumping around) and a small general store. The Host were very nice people and showed a lot of pride in their campground. They have showers and a laundry room and there is a small restaurant on the grounds but it wasn't open while we were here. This place use to be a KOA but not anymore. It is a good Sam friendly place and that got us a little discount. Would I recommend this place to a friend or stay again, yes. read more

We arrived at Vanhorn RV park on a Sunday afternoon and I was delighted to see four washing machines and two dryers. However when I went back with my laundry three of the washers were full of clean wet clothes and no one came to move that laundry. I ran my two loads through the one open washer, which took about an hour and then the first load into the dryer with 2nd into the only open washer. Timing the dryer, I returned about 5 minutes before the time would run in my 2nd dryer. The manager, or her husband had dumped my clothing out of the dryer and had used the remaining time on my dryer for his clothing. He then lied to me about how long his clothing had stayed in the washer. Not reasonable behavior. read more
