Deseret Industries, or "DI", is one of the best thrift stores. Good selection, clean. Not a funny smell like other thrift stores. Good prices. Good organization. The clothes are on circular racks. Many of the clothes are sorted by color on the wall, which is a novel way of organizing. It's not a messy store and I appreciate that. The items are clean and I appreciate that. They have people who are working their way into permanent employment that work here on a temporary basis to gain experience. A few are here because it's the only place they can work. A wonderful way to serve those in need. You will find bargains here and most in good to really good shape. Come here first to shop. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Would definitely recommend you trying it to get your own take on it. 2* = Not so good. Would not recommend at all. Waste of money. 1* = How are they still in business? As mentioned many years ago in a former review, this Deseret Industries thrift store (known as DI locally) has moved to newer digs up 94th South. The new location is large, and tends to be very well organized. It gets pretty picked over all the time, however, and there aren't a lot of the amazing finds you might uncover elsewhere, at least for my taste. I've purchased my fair share of stuff here, but today I went looking for a couple of stuffed animals. You see, it's my pup's birthday and she loves nothing more than to eviscerate a stuffed animal. She's quite methodic about it, finding the weakness (a button eye, perhaps?) and then once it's ruptured, she'll stick her beak in there and pull out all the stuffing, leaving an empty carcass. For $2 I brought home a lion and a whale, and the lion has already started unraveling. There will be nothing left of him in the morning. Beyond that, I also find a large selection of cookbooks here. I collect vintage cookbooks, usually around the topic of bread baking and canning/pickling, though I did pick up a nice little book about Dutch Oven cooking today. The kitchen aisle is great (I posted a cheese grater pic... it's a thing but I've described it too many times in the past) but you really have to search your best to find the real treasures. I also always check the yard to look for vintage ice cream makers. How many do I own? Enough that I don't want to tell you how many I own, exactly. As the clothing goes, it's all middle of the road. I've never found shoes I loved, nor a blazer, though they have plenty of both. I occasionally find a button up shirt or an old Boy Scout uniform, but that's all part of the fun--finding stuff you never thought you were looking for! read more

I like thrift stores a lot, so have checked out most in the area. Each is good for different things. I like this DI for vintage dishes, vintage paintings, records, and books. Clothing is hit or miss (as I suppose it is at all thrift stores), but seems a little more like a miss. It feels more picked over than the Savers just North on State street. I've had some lucky finds in the "collectibles" case. Furniture is very overpriced. It can be pretty busy on weekends, but I haven't ever waited very long to check out (although I have waited for a dressing room). Regardless, if you have some free time it's worth looking over. read more

This is one of the nicest, most organised thrift stores I've ever had the pleasure of shopping in. I live in Colorado, but was in Utah for work and stopped in to check out the selection (thrift shopping is a hobby of mine). The clothes were organised by size, and everything was tidy and easy to find. The housewares were also relatively organised, though there weren't too many amazing finds there - apart from a delightful set of pretty Japanese-made Christmas China (sadly I'm Jewish, so it wouldn't be of much use to me) at fifty cents a piece. I found several lovely pieces of art deco furniture in relatively good condition from $25 to $50, which I think is an absolute steal. Were I driving back to Colorado instead of flying, one of those dressers (with the neat original Bakelite handles!) would have been mine. There were also a few solid brass lamps (that just needed a good polish and a more updated lampshade) that would look lovely in a mid-century styled home. I ended up with a couple of small vintage plates (one from Sweden, one 'borrowed' from a fancy hotel) and a cute Japanese midi skirt from (I think) circa 1980 that I plan to wear in the summer - all for the bargain price of just $5. There weren't a ton of treasures, but you still may find some lovely things depending on your taste / style. I'd definitely come back to see what was in stock. read more

This DI was pretty well stocked, lots of clothes, pretty organized and fairly clean. The workers were fairly pleasant. Got some Decent deals on some things for a vacation. Nice spacious parking lot. My only complaint is that the dressing room floors were super dusty and pretty gross, which was weird because everywhere else was clean. I didn't do a ton of searching in other areas, but I would visit again. read more

Compare this DI to West Jordan DI, it is a lot more smaller. During the fall, I was looking for a sweater to cut it up and make it into a pillow case. Where are the sweaters? I only see coats, hoodie and long sleeves in the warm-wearing section. I looked and looked and finally find one purple Walmart brand sweater. Afterward, I asked the cashier to see there are sections with sweaters and she pointed at the same section where I only saw 3 sweaters. Oh nevermind, I guess I will go to the West Jordan's one. read more

Great place to drop off donations. I also came inside to see what they might have. I found kids ski clothes which was super helpful I felt like I saved a lot of money. I do have one suggestion for management: sometimes I drop off my donations at Savers and I really like what they do for people who give donations... they offer a coupon with 15% off to use in their store. That's a real nice gesture of appreciation. I dropped off a ton of stuff at Deseret and I probably would have gone in side the store sooner had I been enticed with a 15% off coupon. Anyways just a thought to improve. read more

I was walking around the kitchenware and houseware section when one of the workers who was sitting in a rolling chair filling up the silverware made a comment on my mask. My mask said vote, he asked me what that was about I said to remember to vote in this up coming election. He became oddly confrontational and started to rolling around in his chair following me with his mask off laughing at me. It was extremely uncomfortable and harassing. I'll never go to that store again. I'm new in town and this not leave me with a good expression of the LDS community. read more

I've been to almost every thrift store in Utah and SLC counties and I can say that this is definitely one of my favorites. It's very well organized, fairly priced, and always has clean restrooms. The staff is friendly and very willing to help. The associates continuously stock the store with more merchandise until about 4:00 PM. It seems like it is busiest on Saturdays, and weekdays from around 1:00-4:00. I like to do my treasure hunting in the evenings. Like all thrift stores, a little time and patient perusing turns up great treasures. I've seen signed jerseys, autographed books, arcade games, snakeskin boots, Coach purses, and much, much more. This DI has a very good donation base. Whenever I donate I try to come in the morning or evening because the donation drive through tends to be very busy in the afternoon, especially on Saturdays. Some of the people working there are a little odd -- I try to be patient with them because I know that DI is a job training program and they do a lot of good for the community. Having moved several times in the last 5 years or so, my wife and I have had many opportunities to get rid of some of our furniture and other goods, you know, to sort of thin things out so we don't have so much stuff to move! We generally like to give to our local charity that can do some good by selling our treasures at their thrift store and do some sort of good with the money. I also like to shop at these thrift stores to see what other treasures have been given away to charity, and that brings me to the several times that I have dropped into Deseret Industries to see what sort of things I might buy. To be honest, I have never bought a single item from either of the Deseret Industries thrift shops that I have been to. They seem to not have anything worth while and it is kind of a junkyard for cast off things that nobody would want. I don't know what's going on here, but I can only guess that the employees or somebody higher up at the charity is taking all the good stuff for themselves. There is no way that this kind of place does not get really good usable furniture from time to time, yet I have never seen any of it at any time. Nothing but junk. Especially because it seems like Deseret Industries are the only show in town when it comes to charity giving away of household goods and clothing and furniture. Something just isn't right here. I'm not particularly charging them with skimming off the top, I just can't understand why I never see anything worthwhile buying at their shops. I gave them two stars because evidently they are doing some kind of good for the local Salt Lake City Community, and that alone must be worth something. New one is much better, much cleaner and neater then the one before, and doesnt have an odor. It's new location is better. I wouldnt even go to the one before. I usually went to the one at 53rd. Too bad the surrounding businesses are no longer in business. They have a new logo design, automatic doors, new carts, an employment center and distribution center.. I think? Attention CEO, Prophet and Seer of the LDS owned Deseret Industries. In the past, this "non-profit" thrift store was a great resource for those who could not afford to live as the starting $120,000 "living allowance" General Authorities do. Members who have committed their time, service and tithing to the church used to have a financial reprieve from the hardships of life until D.I. thrift-pricing has increased tenfold reaching almost full retail prices found at chain stores around the valley. For example: Key toys that I am familiar with used to be .50 a year ago now cost $2-3. Used free weights in the past were .50 to $1 for any size and poundage. Now used weights are priced .50 to the pound reaching full retail price for new weights purchased from stores like the NPS outlet located down town. Furniture which averaged $5 an item now commands $15 to $30 to $50 or more an item. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. I understand managing hemorrhaging church membership takes a small financial bite from the 32 billion dollars of your controlled church assets but can you just take care of God's children as they have taken care of you by paying for your comfortable and heavenly existence on earth? These entire items from the D.I. were donated to you; It cost you nothing. Time to 'pay it forward' again. At least lower the prices again so I can give the LDS owned/managed D.I. '5 out 5 stars' again. Time to put people before profit and prophet after people. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, AMEN. read more

The selection of goods is good, but the employees are shady and do NOT live up to LDS standards (this is a LDS thrift store)! I worked here for a while, and I can't count how many times I watched people stealing A LOT of merchandise. Not just small things, but bikes, furniture, jewelry, clothes... Anything you can think of! One young lady, who we will call LS, in particular. When I said something about her theft, she laughed and said that it was OK, because everyone was too sure that the theif was another girl... I felt so almost dirty knowing that an innocent girl, who we will call J, was being used as a red hering! Everyone was so busy with J, no one was watching LS, her buddy, A, or anyone else! read more

This store sells broken goods marked as working, also it marks them up to ebay prices. They sell you goods marked as "tested and working" and then when you try to return the un-working product a day later they say they only accept clothes as return. This is a horrible, horrible place, do not donate, do not shop here, let them close down their poor business practices. Do not buy anything marked as working. it doesn't. read more

I just moved here to Utah from Michigan and because we don't have Deseret Industries in Michigan I was really blown away when I entered the store. It doesn't feel like your typical thrift store, it was extremely clean and well organized. I went in at around 8:40pm so I didn't get much time to browse, however while I was there for those 20 minutes I found 3 Trivial Pursuit games to take home with me for $2 each! Much less expensive than other thrift stores I have been to and much nicer. And even better, it's run by the LDS church! I can't wait to go back! read more

I just had a terrible experience dropping a donation off. The staff was very rude and refused some of my donation, a two month old boxsprings mattress. It was like I was being judged by them, it felt very awkward. I think they have lost sight of the fact that they are a public service in helping people who are bringing them items. I won't be donating to Deseret industries again. I took my donation to Savers and they were MUCH better and accepted all my donations. I will not be donating to Deseret industries again. read more

Wow! Best thrift store ever. By far! Everything is so organized! Love it! I went in just looking for a pair of jeans and left with three pairs of jeans, six tops, two pairs of shorts, and a sweater and i only spent $45. What a fantastic find. I will definitely be back!!! read more

The store is so unorganized. The clothes are sorted by color instead of size making it hard to find anything. There is no system to the books, and the electronics are all piled on top of each other making it difficult to find what you want and once you do, makes it hard to get it. No longer a thrift store...at least not the prices, but more like antique store prices. Why would there be dressers that used to be priced at $85 now be $200 and paintings are $600. Really? Not serving families that are struggling any more but lining someones pockets. These items are all donated in but this D.I. has heavy handed pricing. read more

They have stopped selling cookbooks, which was something I went there for. I also used to get stuffed animals for my dogs there and they dont have those either. The prices they are charging are outrageous. Furniture in terrible condition, which they get for free, is priced way too high. I found something they were selling used and it was the same price at Walmart! I thought this store was supposed to help those in need. I do not see how poor people can afford to shop there. My wife and 3 Daughter In-laws spent several hours carefully wrapping and packing several sets of Dishes and Glassware yesterday. She took them to the Sandy location, told them that the boxes contained glass and then watched as the guy dropped the box, on purpose, to the bottom of a large been and she heard glass breaking. . She repeated that the boxes held glass and he did the same thing. She said "you just broke a complete set of dishes!" He said "It happens sometimes". She left vowing never to come back. read more

Love the new store...EXCEPT for the book aisles. DI, please reconfigure those impossible to navigate aisles--way too narrow. You could at least widen the children's aisle so moms with kids in carts can bring them along. read more

It is a nice store we have shopped at the old store and new store, found some great things, The thing that really bothers me is there is a couple managers at this store that are down right not friendly to their crew or shoppers. One lady won't even speak when you say Hi or try to be friendly and have witnessed On several occasions yelling and putting down her employees. Not a pleasant environment and a very uncomfortable feeling.. to be around this. Majority of Managers and workers are great just a couple not at all impressed with. I go to A lot of the DIs and Never felt the way I do in this Sandy DI when this Manager is working.. Not a good reflection on the Store Or the Religion.. The store is clean and no smells The isles are lot wider then old store. I think some of their Prices are high on clothing and bedding for being used items. .My opinion.
