I've been seeking a new barber shop for awhile now. As luck would have it I won a gift certificate to Derrick's. Based on my initial visit I have found my new barber shop. I explained to Derrick what I wanted he made a few suggestions and I emerged a brand new man (tip of the cowboy hat to Brooks & Dunn). I also had my scraggly beard trimmed and shaped using a straight razor. What a difference. I believe there are three additional barbers working with Derrick that have all been at this location for quite a while. Not Derrick's! Then comes in the other option of: balance. I think it's safe to say, we could all use a little more of that. For context - I'm a suburban dad with two young kids. I eat ramen noodles and a crazy night out with the wife is when we decide to splurge and get an appetizer (typically the southwest eggrolls or spinach & artichoke dip). I love Derrick's Barber Shop because for 30-solid minutes I don't have to dress up like a princess, be punched in the ear by my son, or have the corporate office work woes plague my central nervous system. Derrick's Barbershop is a non-pretentious atmosphere, filled with super normal people that understand that when guests come into the store that it's a moment when they can hit pause. While you wait, sip some agua, have a beer, watch the game. Not into sports? -- then watch the neighboring screen with Chive TV on it and you'll be able to see a cat ride on a unicycle while juggling a set of hamsters. Derrick's staff understands hair. Yes, I know that seems like a no-brainer, but so is having your cell phone actually be able to make a phone call...(bet that doesn't always happen for you now does it). "Getting" hair is a big deal because no two heads of hair are the same. Professionals get that. And that's a big deal when a guest has an end goal of wanting to walk out with the look that they want. Also, your barber really wants you to be happy with the end result. Ever been in a chair, where you ask the stylist to make a little adjustment and then you're only returned with a long pause and a lot of heavy breathing? Yeah, not the case here. After wrapping up my haircut I always need a shampoo because I'm returning to work (if I don't get one, my backside becomes an uncomfortable rainstick ). The best part of the shampoo is the warm towel that stacks up on my face (don't worry, there's a breathing hole). When I'm done with my shampoo, my barber (Milli)(Please get your own, she's not taking any more customers)(J/K, that's not true, but seriously, get your own) finishes with the "pièce de résistance" using the warm lather to finish off the back of my neckline. I like it, but maybe slapping on cold shaving cream that feels like wet toilet paper is more other folks' thing. Key thing, is that Derrick's Barbershop will be what you need it to be. For me, it feels like community. Like the show Cheers, The Dos Equis Guy and Nolan Ryan's genetic material was put into a blender and pooped out in the form of a barbershop. This review is long overdue. I've been coming here for about 2 years after moving from another area where I had a consistent barber I trusted and knew really well. Was really nervous to find a barber in my new home and as I expected tried several other barbers who weren't a fit for me but stepping inside of Derrick's Barber Shop I felt welcome and like maybe I had found the shop I was looking for. Really glad I was right. I can't speak for all of their barbers from personal experience as I booked my first appointment with Derrick and haven't looked back but I will say that I've seen many of their other barbers do some great cuts as well. Derrick gives you exactly what you ask for in a cut and even asks if he can improve on an element of the cut with very low pressure and even will tell you if he doesn't think something will work with your hair type or style. Can honestly say my haircut has changed for the better since coming here. read more

I went in to go from long hair to very short and thought a barbershop such as this one would be the best place to go. I was right! I loved the atmosphere and the staff was very kind and attentive. They gave me good advice and did an excellent job on the cut. They also pointed me in the right direction for products to maintain my hair that weren't overly expensive yet work great. I took my 2 year old son here to get his haircut. He is a pretty hard customer as he has some fear about getting a cut. Sierra was so friendly to him and you could tell she has kids. She gave him his phone to watch SpongeBob and was gentle and loving to him. We will definitely be back as she cut his hair perfectly and I didn't have to have him on my lap!! The receptionist tried to tell me maybe I booked it with someone else but unfortunately I had an email proving who it was booked with. I also like if you don't show up your credit cards automatically gets charged but if they don't show up you don't get any compensation for wasting your time. read more

I have been trying to check this place out all week since I'm off for spring break and was really annoyed to find out that the two times I stopped by more than an hour or two before closing and they were already gone for the day. I had just wanted to stop by and talk with someone about what they do and if I could book a private party for me and my groomsmen to all get trimmed and shaved together for my bachelor party but felt discouraged that twice now they weren't even open during advertised hours. Call this a cumulative review. I've been to 'Derrick's' 3 times. Barber pole on the window. Walk ins welcome I guess. Today - no bueno. Walk ins not welcome. The haircuts have been fine. Just bugs me that the 1st words asked is 'do you have an appointment?' Note: I don't make haircut appointments. Ever. Those that do - more power to you. Not my thing. Do suggest you change your greeting to 'what can we do for you today?' Instead. Or - put 'By appointment only' on the front door. Moving on to the next option. read more
