The environment is so airy with lovely plants, a minimalistic look, light streaming in, and I was kindly greeted and asked if I needed anything to drink/how my day was. They had amazing local jewelry, hair products and body products that all were made with wholesome ingredients that I also got to browse + a nice seated area for waiting since I was early. I've been putting off getting my haircut for almost a year now (horrible I know) because it's extremely hard to find someone I trust to know how to cut curly hair + I've had horrible experiences in the past. Christine regularly comes in to get coffee from where I work + I already was sold on trying her out based off her real, easy to talk to, uplifting personality but I am blown away. She took the time to hear what my needs were + my curly hair journey. She knew exactly what to recommend for my needs, listened to what I was looking for and made me feel completely at ease. I loved how Christine was confident in her extensive knowledge of curly hair patterns + molding the haircut to me specifically! Curly hair is extremely hard to work with due to its irregularity + she made my curls revived again. Additionally, I got a killer head message while getting a deep condition + it couldn't have been a more calming experience! I loved how Christine was easy to talk to + MASTERED my haircut. I never write reviews, even when I say I'm going to, but I have to express my feelings about Zoe and Dept Z. Zoe is an artist and a true master of her craft. This is the best haircut I have ever gotten...EVER!!!! I have recently moved to the Spokane area, had waist long curly/ wavy hair and was way overdue for a trim and ready for something new, but at a total loss for where to go and who to trust. I read all the reviews I could for all the local salons and couldn't find any with consistent good comments until I came across Dept Z. Every comment was a glowing 5 star review. Every single one. Upon meeting Zoe I understood why, even before any scissors touched my hair. She took the time to discuss my ideas and concerns, analyzed and explained what would work best and why, and only after a good half an hour did she actually start cutting. Oh Zoe at Dept Z, how I love thee. Let me count the ways... never mind, 'cause there's way too many. You cannot divide by zero, and you cannot find a more talented/amazing/wonderful hairdresser and person than Zoe. That's just science. I originally made an appointment with Zoe after reading her amazing reviews, and this girl does not disappoint. Another reviewer said she was a wizard with hair. This is true, and probably the most eloquent description for the magic she performs. I brought in a picture of what I wanted, and she totally blew my mind by giving me exactly what I asked for. She repeatedly exceeds my expectations, and gives me the best looking hair I've ever had (why couldn't I have found her in high school?) She is probably the most educated and most passionate person I've ever met, and not just in hair/beauty. And she is a total sweetheart. Hairdresser, here. I am shocked at the lack of reviews on yelp, even just sheerly based on the things I hear about Zoe around town all of the time by word of mouth. This lady is truly a hairdresser's hairdresser. I have watched her win competitions and attended her classes and presentations over the years, and I am consistently amazed by per poise, her passion, and her know-how. I asked for and received the pleasure of being able to shadow at Dept. Z recently (because I was about to move to New York and I wanted to absorb everything I could from the best hairdresser in Spokane) and she and Jessica Hunton (supremely sweet and very talented in her own right) were so warm and welcoming and let me hang out and watch them work all day, which I can't honestly say just any old hairdressers would let me do. The best salon I've been to living in Washington for the past 5 and a half years. I went in for a cut and color with Mateo and he was amazing! I went in for a big change--cutting my lower back length hair up to barely grazing my shoulders (a lob). I've never been so comfortable, informed, and trusting with another stylist as I did with Mateo. He was so friendly, calm, a great listener, and knew what he was doing. He asked me a lot of questions and made sure that we were on the same page with what I wanted. He really shows that he cares about his clients. (Not like stylists who do whatever they want, regardless of what you tell them you want) The whole time I was there, he was such a gentleman and made the experience exceptional for me. At the end of the day, I got an amazing fresh cut and amazing caramel-blonde highlights and balayage. Mateo even added more blonde in my hair even after we washed and dried when I asked. I've been going to Christine for about a year now and she is the only person I will trust with my hair!! Among many of her wonderful qualities, she is exceptional at communication and always makes sure you're both on the same page about what you want your hair to look and feel like. She is incredibly personable, warm, and completely inviting. She excels at so many different haircuts and styles, and I trust her completely with my hair and that it will turn out well. Also she's just fun to talk to and always has interesting things to say. Dept Z provides such a wonderful environment and I always feel so happy walking in. I love this place. First off, it's next to main market downtown, so if anything, you should go so you can get some delicious food at main after you get your dew done. I love the atmosphere in Dept. Z. They're always welcoming, even if I'm there just to see my girlfriends hair get done, they still ask me how I'm doing and offer me something to drink. It's the little things. Everyone at Dept. Z is very kind and also exceedingly professional. They do what you want and are always open for suggestions. I had an appointment with Paige at dept z a few weeks back to get a cut and color for summer, and now I know I have found my permenant hairdresser! I am always so unsure about what to do with my hair, so going to Paige was PERFECT! She explained face shapes, what cut would fit best, what color would best compliment my features and then on top of it, took the time to figure out exactly what I wanted. All before starting the cut! It was a wonderful laid back appointment and I felt very pampered! The atmosphere was amazing, with the brick walls, large mirrors and view of the city. Let me start by restating what's already been stated: Zoe is a magical hair wizard with powers beyond the physical limitations of our earthly world. I began my adventure with Zoe probably 8 or 9 yrs ago. I walked into her studio with virgin hair that had never been touched by colour. Today, I can proudly say that Zoe & I have successfully applied every color of the rainbow to my ever-changing locks. Literally. And no matter what I do (or don't do), it always looks amazing!! I lived in Spokane for four years and trusted Paige at Dept. Z with my hair. Paige listened to me and gave me absolutely perfect cuts, colors, and styles. I had an interview with Paige and it was not at all what I expected it to be... I'm used to walking into a salon, telling the hair stylist "this is the cut I want and this is the color". I had the pictures on my phone ready to go, but Paige actually stepped me through a process, explaining what my face shape was and what I should consider for a hairstyle and color. I'm pretty outgoing, so I let go and gave her free reign. I couldn't be happier with what she did! She really took the time to listen to my hair troubles and concerns and even showed me how to style my hair after I left. It doesn't feel like I just went and received a cut and color, it feels like I got a hair consult from a stylist that really cares! I have been looking for a salon to go to for awhile and my friend recommended Dept Z. I went in and saw Paige and let me tell you, this girl works magic! Before even getting started she talks about all the concerns you have about your hair and tells you what she knows about face shape and everything else. After taking all that into account you get to figure out what would work best for you:) She did an amazing job on my hair today and I was nervous about such a change (I got a lot of hair off) but it turned out awesome! Dept. Z is the place to go if you want a cut or color that you'll absolutely love. The salon has a cool, clean atmosphere that makes you feel like you've left the streets of Spokane. The stylists are extremely friendly and knowledgable and über talented. My personal fave is Paige Barker. She's one of the most gifted hair stylists that I've ever been to. It took a while, but the search has ended! Paige Barker in amazing stylists and the only one doing my hair, so long as I live in Spokane! The staff at Dept Z salon are fabulous! They are friendly, professional, and stay current on the latest hair trends through continued professional development. Dept z cares about giving back to their community and recently the staff volunteered their time at a local Elementary School in order to provide free hair cuts to students upon their return to school this last Fall!!! First I would like to say that getting my hair cut stresses me out to the fullest extent. I used to only get it cut twice a year for that exact reason. When a friend told me to go see Jessica at Dept. Z, I was was of course stressed. But from the moment I entered the salon my stress level dropped. Jessica took amazing care of me. Wonderful experience. Paige is a hair wizard. I am a salon's worst nightmare...not knowing exactly what I want but know exactly what I don't want but still terrible at explaining both. Paige never showed impatience and even though my appointment took us well over 3 hours she never rushed through anything and took time to explain every step and ask questions about every detail of my hair's routine/history.
