This was my first dentist that wasn't provided by free state healthcare and it was a great transition!!! I hadn't been to the dentist in 9 years! California provides dental until 21. I just turned 30 last month. WHOA! To say that I needed a lot of work done is an understatement and they made me feel so at ease! I had a young lady named Kenya do my X-rays. She was a sweetheart! I was mortified when my imaging process was being done because it had been so long. She assured me that 1. she's seen worse, and 2. That at least I was THERE to get it taken care of and that was the important part. I was quickly able to stop worrying about the people in the office judging. Super friendly staff. I could tell from my first interaction that this office was not to be trusted. They misquoted the cost of my surgery, given my insurance. I got a pre-authorization from the insurance company, but I was warned that I may have to pay the full cost. Why would that be, unless the dentist planned to do something unauthorized? Appalling. I went there with a loose crown. They did not address that telling me to wait until it falls out. Then they did all this diagostic stuff and told me that I needed a deep cleaning because I had early stage peridontal disease. I had a cleaning three months prior with another dentist and nothing showed up, but nobody ever did an exam that lengthy and they told me not all dentists had the same equipment, so I paid for it. I spoke to my insurance company and told me that while I paid $960, they told the insurance company on the claim form that I paid $320. I've never seen or heard of this type of misrepresentation or fraud before in what is supposed to be a professional environment. was going here for years and I am ALL THE WAY DONE. This is the 2nd time they have cancelled an appointment 5 MINUTES before it was meant to start. The piss poorly raised little girl on the phone had the audacity to say my reaction was unacceptable but was too gutter to let me know what a reasonable reaction to this news would be. She messed up saying the appointment was cancelled because of the road conditions and then tried to gaslight me and say I missed the grace period. First of all, the appointment was at 8am. It's 7:56am what do you mean I missed the grace period? My appointments here usually start late and I am OFTEN waiting 30 minutes past the appointment time to be seen. The last time this happened I told the person who was meant to do the cleaning and she wanted to give a log winded explanation about why it was running late. I told her I didnt want to discuss it and she harassed me trying to tell me the story about why the appointment was 30 minutes late. On the 6th time I told her I did not want to hear it or have this conversation and she lied and said I had an attitude as if someone in that position wouldn't be entitled to do so although I actually did not and she then refused to do the cleaning as if I am the one with the problem in need of someone to be their therapist and listen to the ridiculous reason the appointment was running late. Why do I need to listen to why you're bad at your job? I don't. The fact that I didn't and she kept harassing me for a conversation I clearly told her I didn't want to have is a grossly inappropriate way to treat a consumer but she was clearly having a power trip and wanted to victimize someone that day but no more. A bit surprised to read the reviews on here as I had a generally positive experience. Overall good service and I will probably come back. A couple of critiques though: when I arrived there was no one at the front desk for about ten minutes, apparently they were in a meeting, but there was no sign on the desk explaining this. If it weren't for another patient in the office who explained that they had all gone to a meeting I would not have understood why there were no staff at the front desk. Also, while almost everyone at the office was very friendly and courteous, I found the dental assistant (at least I believe it was the dental assistant) to be a little curt; and I found her instructions/commands to be difficult to understand as she mumbled and spoke quickly - if English were not my first language, she would have been unintelligible. Those things aside, it was overall a good visit as mentioned. read more

After years of neglect I finally visited a dentist since oral health is linked to overall health. As I suspected, there were many issues including gingivitis, but first,I needed several extractions. While under local anesthesia and my mouth bleeding, Dr. Chessia Thomas tells me I needed an expensive procedure usually done in preparation for tooth implants. She insisted if I didn't have it, there would be a high risk for infection. I felt I had no option but to move forward. The dentist left and I had to sit with a numbed, bleeding mouth and work out a payment plan with the office manager. The dentist came back and in less than five minutes was done. A few weeks later I returned for a follow-up and the first thing Dr. Thomas said after the examination was that I was now ready for a tooth implant. After I said no thank you she walked out of the exam room, never offering to address any of my pressing dental issues. I never went back. read more

Ridiculous! I had a 5:00 appointment to have my teeth cleaned. I receive a call asking me if I could come earlier. I did not get off until 4:00 so I kept my appointment at 5:00 but went straight from work. I arrived at 4:15pm. I check in and the woman at the front desk informs me that if I get the laser it will be one hundred and fifty something dollars. I ask what the laser is, and she can't tell me. She informs me that the dentist will let me know what it is when I get called back. She then asks me to sign the pad. I asked what I am signing for and she tells me the laser treatment. I let her know that I was not signing for something when I do not know what it is. She then says in a nasty tone, "cleaning with out the laser is fifty something dollars and asked me again to sign the pad. I explained to her that I did not refuse the laser. I need an explanation of services before making a decision and signing anything. (I also find it strange that the way the front desk is set up, the patient can never see what is on the screen when asked to sign.) The woman breathes hard and tells one of the dentist ,"Check this lady in." and leaves the desk to walk out front. I ask the dentist 3 times what the lady's name is and finally he says he thinks her name is Missy. I said, "You think her name is Missy?" He replied, "Yes, this is not my normal location." I would expect the dentist to apologize for the rude behavior of the staff but nothing. He just goes on and checks me in like her behavior is normal. I tell him to cancel my appointment, and I will never come back. read more

My family member was asked to sign a two-page "Exam Consent" form without being shown the document--just told to sign digitally on a pad. This mirrors other complaints describing patients being rushed to sign forms without review or explanation. Despite receiving and signing a financial agreement that clearly stated the cost would be $0 for a recommended procedure--and asking two different staff members on the day of the appointment whether any payment was due (both said no)--we later received a bill for nearly $1,000. This aligns with numerous other reviews reporting unexpected charges for procedures or materials that were never properly disclosed. Over the following three weeks, we called four times and never received a return call. When we finally reached someone, the bill was only partially reduced, with the explanation that "a service had been provided." This dismissive response, combined with the lack of communication, reinforces concerns about poor service and questionable billing practices. Patients are entitled to clear, advance disclosure of treatment costs. Simply signing a general consent form at check-in (that cannot be seen) does not waive that right, especially when costs are not explained. Until this matter is resolved and the improper charge removed, our experience stands as further confirmation that this practice prioritizes revenue over honesty and patient trust. I hate to write a negative review, but at every step of my care with this office I have encountered issues. The staff are so friendly- which is why having to write this review sucks! As I type this, I am on hold with their office for over 45 minutes (have called 3 times over the last three weeks to determine when my final crown will be delivered.) If you need anything beyond a dental cleaning please go anywhere else. I had a cavity- they was infected needing a root canal- instead of providing antibiotics immediately, they stated "We got it just in time" **Dear Reader they did not** This escalated into an emergent situation - unable to numb the area - only for them to send me to their sister office in Fairfax (who after the root canal sent me home with a broken temp crown). If that was not horrific enough. Once I did recieve the permanent crown- it fell off in ONLY TWO MONTHS. This has been a nightmare of a summer now escalating into my Fall as I still dont have a permanent crown after paying $1,300 for care. Go anywhere else. read more

But when I returned to book the standard preventative care cleaning, they said the dentist would have to decide if they were willing to perform a basic covered service without my commitment to the $1K+ other out-of-pocket recommendations. 1. On 9/20, I went in for cleaning and straightening. Dr. Thomas told me I have a chipped tooth that may need a crown. She pressured me into getting this crown, knowing that insurance does not cover any of the cost. This cost me $1231.00, which I wasn't aware of. Does she understand what the cost of living is in MD? 2. 11/20 After the crown placement, I noticed I was having issues flossing one of my teeth. Eventually, the tooth broke off. I sent Dr. Thomas a message informing her of the problem. Although she tried to address the issue the day I went in, she was not very comforting. She explained it was a filling that fell out. How do you fill a space in my tooth that was never there in the first place? 3. 11/20 When I went in to do my cleaning, I was told I had to do a deep cleaning, including laser treatment. They would not give up on the laser treatment and were even irritated that I was refusing it. The Hygeinist did not numb the area properly. When I told her it hurt, she told me to keep my hands at my side. How can you inject me so deep into my tissue and then proceed to say that it is no joke and at the same time ask why I look so tense? Pain is pain. Also, she did not clean the bottom area of my mouth. I was so happy to get up and get out of there. 4. All of this extra work is unnecessary. How can you only want to work on a patient when the patient is accepting out-of-pocket costs? Also, they add these costs without your consent and then have you sign off while in the chair. This should be unacceptable. This is not consent. 5. I canceled all the future appointments they made for me. Beside the fact that they added all these extra costs, nobody wants to get hurt, and that is what topped it off for me. read more

My biggest mistake EVER going here. There is absolutely NO communication from this office. My assigned dentist, decides what treatment you get, she's changes your appointment as she sees fit. The office works with Specalist to who they do not have set prices for, so the estimate you get will far exceed what you have to pay. They do not give you breakdowns of what the fees are, it's for you to GOOGLE. The insurance rep does not remember your payment arrangements, that they quote YOU. You will be met with a bunch of "I'm sorrys". They do not tell patients that they DO NOT work with Kaiser to cover any oral surgery you may need. But they will take your Kasier cars as if they do and ads it to your chart. Service was great when I first started coming but BUT NOW...I truly hate myself for having them start work on my tooth. read more

I had a disappointing experience with this dental office. They sent me a misleading coupon, which felt like false advertising. Despite giving them another chance, the customer service was still poor. I was asked to pay upfront before treatment, which was never required in my previous visits (over 3-4 times). Dr. Thomas is an angel! She really does what's best for the patient and helps make it more affordable. Other doctors are also wonderful (highly recommend Dr Djavan for root canals and Dr Ashkan for extractions). Staff are very helpful and welcoming (always smiling and very helpful). The x-ray tech who worked with me was nice, but this whole visit was such a waste of time. Process for new patients is outrageous and unexplained! I specifically made an appt for filling and daughter's teeth cleaned. We each spent 3.5 hours getting X-rays, gum specialist, dentist, treatment plan with many recommendations not covered (inflated charges) and told we had to reschedule for treatment. I had recent X-rays forwarded and they insisted on doing more and although I had a regular cleanings, was told I had gingivitis generating 1K worth of unnecessary procedures I wasn't being seen for, my daughter as well. This practice is like a warehouse and nothing I've ever experienced before or wish to again! Complaint pending with Insurance, as for the front desk staff, inept and lack inability to explain policy/procedure when scheduling and seemingly don't care! They overcharge. I went for a regular cleaning in 2021, which was covered by my insurance. They only showed me the final bill and asked for my "consent" when I was lying on the orthodontic chair, not in a position where I could reasonably assess my options. I would not consider this an informed consent. They added a lot of things on top of regular cleaning that were highly unnecessary. That was my first and last time I went to Dentist of Silver Spring. They told me I needed a crown put in and cancelled on me at the VERY LAST MINUTE and then insist that I come in on a Saturday to have it done. The procedure was already paid for ($3500 WITH INSURANCE) so nothing I can do but agree. I have gone to the dentist every 6 months for my entire life and have never been told I need a deep cleaning for periodontal issues that will cost $300, but that's what happened here. It was also recommended that I get a night mouth guard for another $300. Plenty of other dentist offices around - pass on this one. read more

Used to really like going here, but it has gotten worse in quality and more expensive over time. I used to pay $50 for my visit after insurance, and my last visit was closer to $200. When I asked what changed they didn't say anything about my appointment or cleaning was different, but that they were adding additional services like "checking for oral cancer" (my visit was EXACTLY the same as always). Also, I had a different dentist than usual for a cleaning who recommended a night guard for teeth grinding, something I had never been told I had despite going here for 2-3 years. When I went back to ask my regular dentist about it, she also referred me to the contracted periodontist. I was told I had $10K+ of gum grafting needed and the contracted periodontist had terrible bedside manner and made me way more anxious about the whole thing. I ended up going to a different periodontist and he confirmed I did need the gum grafting, but I was very frustrated because I try to be very proactive about my health and knew I had gum recession, but no one mentioned to me that it was bad enough that I would need a procedure or explained the impact it could have until I got a second opinion. I ended up going with the 2nd periodontist for the procedure and will be looking for a different dentist for my regular cleanings. I'm also frustrated because this happened in January of 2024, and at my precious appointment in July 2023, NO ONE mentioned teeth grinding, night guards, or gum recession to me. If they had, I would have had time to change my insurance during open enrollment in Novembef and would have saved thousands of dollars on my gum grafting procedure, which I waited until July 2024 to have so I could save up money for it. read more

I recently moved to the area and was in need of a tooth cleaning and X-rays. I went with this office because it is close to my home and the reviews were good. I soon found out that it not all it's cracked up to be. Instead of getting the standard cleaning covered by my insurance that I have gotten twice a year from as long as I can remember, the dentist suggested I get a deeper cleaning that would cost me $500 out of pocket after claiming that I had some periodontal issues. Keep in mind, my teeth are in excellent condition and my previous dentist never mentioned any of this before. After declining to get the deeper cleaning the dentist told me that I would not be getting the standard cleaning I came for and that I could reschedule when I was ready to fork over the $500 for the deeper cleaning. I was shocked that she wouldn't perform the standard cleaning. What sense does it make to forgo any and all cleaning? To add to the ridiculousness, the dentist recommended I come in for cleanings every 3 to 4 months. The total cost of the visits were around 4 thousand dollars out of pocket! Please beware and do your research. It was apparent to me that the dentist didn't have my best interest and was more concerned about how much money she could get me to spend. The conduct of the administrative staff is extremely unprofessional and violates all HIPAA laws. I witnessed the front desk staff announcing the treatment of the patient before me, upon checking-in. None of their main treatment rooms have doors on them, they are open cubicles, so you can hear every single medical diagnosis & treatment of the patients around you. When they come to discuss financial information and payment options, they are extremely loud and I felt deeply uncomfortable having my private information broadcasted for the office. When I expressed discomfort regarding the situation, I was met with attitude. As an immune compromised person, I also felt uncomfortable being in this open floor layout, not far from other maskless patients. A very nice dental hygienist offered to move me to a room with a door in the back. I am confused as to why rooms with doors are not being used regularly to protect patients from COVID. read more

They only care about your money. I went there because I moved to the area and saw they had good reviews. I went in for what I thought was a normal teeth cleaning. I was there for 2 hours, they took some x-rays and never cleaned my teeth. They kept saying they needed to verify the cost with my insurance even though I gave them my insurance days in advance. They said it was a system issue and made a second appointment with me to come back a week later, with the promise to tell me the cost the next day. In the week after, they failed to reach out to me with the price until I refused to confirm the appointment without seeing the costs. Thank goodness I did that! They wanted to charge my insurance $2,000 to clean my teeth! I personally would have had to pay $600 out of pocket even though I've never paid for teeth cleanings when using my insurance in the past. I canceled the appointment. One month later, I got a bill for $225 for the x-rays. They just want your money. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. read more

I was emmeditely told that the tooth had to be extracted.When I ask if there was any other alternative the answer was no. I wish I read the reviews here first. I chose this dentist due to the good reviews on Google. I rarely give reviews and especially bad ones. However, I really just want to give my opinion on what happened in my case and help someone out when they are new to the area and need a dentist. If you don't do your research and depend on the dentist's expert knowledge here, you end up in so much pain figuratively and physically. The dentist I had was Chessia Thomas. I came in for a cleaning and they gave exceptional cleanings and recommend their cleanings. However, I do not recommend getting a crown here. After grinding my old teeth to prepare it for the crown, the dentist noticed a crack in my old tooth and in hindsight instead of placing a temporary crown to monitor the crack she put a real crown on. It ended up I was in so much pain I couldn't work and had to take time off to go and drive back to my old dentist to see what's going on. In the end my old dentist gave me a root canal and of course that ruined the expensive crown I was recommended to put on by Chessia. I also noticed when my old dentist gave me the crown, their team was phenomenal and it went so much smoother and had the knowledge and expertise. If you ever need a root canal or a crown done, I recommend Herndon Dental Arts. It is far from Maryland but it's worth it. read more

Moved to the area (in the Blairs complex) awhile ago, and hadn't got around to changing dentists from the one I had in Baltimore. I brush and floss daily, get regular 6-month cleanings, and haven't had major problems in several years. Nonetheless, unexpected pain developed during the weekend in one tooth, and they were able to get me in within a day. Their modern equipment (more advanced than my previous dentist) picked up the problem right away, and they were able to get me to a specialist for further treatment the following day. Dr. Thomas was great in diagnosing and explaining the issue, and Martin at the front desk was terrific in securing the referral. If your looking for a dentist in the area, I highly recommend them. read more
