I could not be any more happy with the services I received from Delmonico Hatters in December 2022. I bought a Borsalino Bellagio, a Stetson Pinnacle, and a Stetson Inwood and all three hats arrived at my doorstep in lightening speed and so well packaged. I asked for hat size reducers with the new hats and Delmonico Hatters was so kind to include a personal note with instructions. One of the hats regrettably had dimensional issues and when I called the store, they were very professional and most eager to make things right. They immediately sent out a replacement without requesting that I send the faulty one back first. I got the replacement in two days and it was perfect. It's completely mind blowing that a hat shop like this exists here in New Haven because places like this just don't exist anymore. A lot of them went out of business decades ago. I think what keeps these guys in business is the fact that they have a very large online presence. Here's a little know fact....Delmonico's has been a brick-n-mortar retail mainstay in downtown New Haven for decades. My grandfather used to patronize them back in the old days, at a time when hats were more in style... They have lots of hats. If you find a make/model online and you don't see it on the floor, just ask. They have a large warehouse of hats right next door and can search it of need be. I'm not a really big hat person, but recently when looking for a quality pork pie hat, Delmonico's came through for me. The staff is both knowledgable and helpful. Prices are OK. I found them to be comparable to most online prices. Expect to pay somewhere between $50 and $120 for a good hat. They sell Bailey hats (which I like). The only real negative is that the only mirrors in the store are located way in the back of the store. They're somewhat a pain in the ass to reach because of the clutter in the store. I REALLY REALLY wish they had a decent full body mirror located closer to the hats. It would make the whole experience much more convenient. Because believe me, if you're like me you're going to try on lots of hats before picking the right one, and unfortunately that involves a lot of mirror time. PS: They put a small Delmonico label in all their hats. It's a nice touch. read more

SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE While I have had *some* luck in buying shoes on the Internet, for some reason the idea of trying hats on remotely seemed absolutely absurd to me: more so than with shoes, fit is *very* elusive with hats. And the prospect of paying the costs of shopping in NYC (cabs, parking, and then taxes on top of it all) add insult to uncertainty. That's why I was delighted to find Delmonico on the web. I had a quick chat about what I might be able to find, and stopped off on my last trip to NYC to see what was in stock. I spoke with Ben and he patiently allowed me to try on maybe a dozen styles, explaining the differences in material, the benefits of a specific crown or brim size, and the rest. Ben probably took a half an hour to go over all my questions. As it turned out, I just could not decide. The hat I really wanted was just enough above my "mental budget" that I decided to defer the decision. Flash forward a couple of weeks, and I've decided to go ahead with the more expensive hat, but i can't find the business card with Ben's name and the hat specifics! What to do? Well, I called and the young lady who picked up listened carefully, asked a couple of questions, and just happened to be facing the hat box with my name on it! Brilliant! By purchasing it by phone, I avoid the local sales tax and the shipping was free. I was hoping to get it by the next Monday, but it arrived the very next day. My father told me I HAD to write this review. Seriously. His exact words were, "Nova, I want you to write Mr. Delmonico an excellent review." Being the amazing daughter that I am, here it goes. As far as I can remember, my dad has been a "hat guy." Fedoras are his signature hats but he has tons of different styles. My dad really loves his hats and he knows all about the particulars of hat collecting (style, brands, prices, value). It was my dad who introduced me to Delmonico Hatter because I was clueless that New Haven had a premier hatter in it's midst. At his request, I took my dad to Delmonico's to have a few of his hats cleaned. The whole way there dad educated me about how Delmonico is a family-owed business and has been in New Haven for over 100 years. He had seen an ad for Delmonico in one of his hat magazines and he was really excited that there was a hatter so close to me, so he HAD to make a special trip to Connecticut; to see his baby girl (of course) and to visit this legendary hatter (mostly to see the hatter Haha). From the moment we walked in the shop, Mr. Delmonico was a class act. His knack for customer service is unparalleled. Dad only came in to have two hats cleaned. By the time we left he had bought two more hats and he and Mr. Delmonico were chatting like old friends. I was impressed, that type of salesmanship and attention to the customer is hard to find these days. Mr. Delmonico literally walk us around the shop showing my dad hats and telling us about his inventory. On at least two occasions I've dealt directly with Mr. Delmonico and he's a business owner that really has customer service down to a fine art. I've shopped at Delmonico Hatter for years - I've owned at least five hats purchased there - and although there are stores that match its selection, I've never found one to match its service. They bring years of experience, knowledge and skill, and a genuine commitment to fulfill their customer's needs to each person coming through the door. Entering the shop feels a little like a step back in time, partly because speciality shops have become more rare, partly because men's hats are less common, and partly because the back of the store jams display space, customer service space, and work space together. I remember that from my childhood; it's very rare to see a sewing machine, say, in a clothing shop today. They've got lots of hats. And a warehouse next door to support their web business so they'll fetch even more to try (they did for me). As far as I can tell, they carry all the major hat makers around right now, with prices ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred. Parking on Elm Street can be tricky, so they made sure to let me know that they validate tickets for the lot across the street. I've also ordered from them online, and had good results: I've liked the hats, and they've arrived in good condition and on time. But there's nothing at all like a visit there. They don't treat you like a king: they treat you like a best friend. read more

I have purchased several hats from Delmonico. Most orders have gone well minus one or two hats with noticeable brim flaws. One Stetson Open Road had such a warped brim that even a hatter couldn't fix it. My fault for not sending it right back. Maybe it was Stetson's fault. Who knows but it wasn't a cheap hat at $199. Now when I order I am sure to specify no warped brims. 2 months ago I placed a pre-order for 3 new Stetsons and fast forward to now they were still waiting on one to arrive. I thought for sure they had charged me a few months ago but after checking my CC Account that wasn't the case. I canceled my order for two reasons. 1. Hat money is spare money. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't. Chances are if you wait 2 months to fill my order I won't have it anymore. 2. The customers service rep got snippy with me when I told her that I needed to verify that my account was not charged. Don't get snippy on my dime. I needed to verify it since your order fulfillment took so long. I've got tons and tons of hats. I probably saved myself a few bucks by canceling my order. read more

What an absolute jewel of a shop! Years ago my mother worked at Best & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York, perhaps the best children's clothing store in the western hemisphere where employees practiced world class customer service and salesmanship. My wife did the same at Brooks Brothers' headquarters store on Madison Avenue in New York, another best-in-class shop. Ladies and gentlemen, New Haven's DelMonico Hatter is in the same league. Absolutely superb. Where else can you shop in a store that has operated since the Theodore Roosevelt administration. And wears its history very well. I long knew what I wanted (Stetson Gun Club Royal Flush) but hesitated to make the purchase on the internet. Didn't trust key strokes and mouse clicks to get me the right size and adjustments. I despaired of no brick and mortar shop. Then, several months ago I learned of DeMonico's right under my nose in nearby New Haven. Called and spoke with Christina who invited me in. ("We'll stamp your ticket for the parking lot across the street.") She and the owner should write a book on customer service. There's a very special comfortable pride, justifiable pride, that comes from working at an outfit that's acknowledged to be best-in-the world. It hits you like a physical force. I enjoyed that working for 51 years at Sikorsky Aircraft. And these people, together with Stetson, (reported to have had its best year ever last year) have it in spades. I've order about five hats from these people online and I've finally come to the conclusion these people are ambivalent about customer service. I've asked email questions about fairly expensive hats that have gone unanswered. I asked for the hat box to the particular hats I purchased and you'd think I asked for their first born. I have to take their store branded box and they behave as if your really asking for something extreme. I use other online vendors also and these are the only people I've had that problem with. I have a hat on the way now and after I receive it I will determine if we'll continue business. read more

The best hat shop ever. Jesus christ, just go in there and try on some hats and buy one. You can get a beret for cheap or go hog wild and get, like, a Borsolino or something... Winter's coming. You want to look good. Fashionista has hats, but it's hit or miss with the fit. At Delmonico's, your hat is fitted. They'll also reblock your hat if it needs it. They don't make places like this anymore, but they really, really, really should. read more

First the good news: They usually ship orders within a day or two. Now the bad news: They are real stinkers when it comes to responding to email questions. I was especially upset over this because I was a very good customer - about $2,000 in orders over a six month period (average hat price about $300). I ordered a Stetson Open Road in silverbelly online and received the wrong color hat. When I called they were a bit snippy and wouldn't take responsibly even though the hat pictured on my order was the correct color. They said they hat in the correct color in stock, then they said they did not. The run around, phone calls and emails delayed my ordering from another company and I didn't have the hat for the birthday which was disappointing. They have nice hats but the customer service isn't the greatest. read more

I ordered a stetson hat for a Christmas present; Web site stated that the hat would be shipped in three weeks. I called the store the week before Christmas and Delmonico did not have a hat BUT could send me a hat that had been sized wrong. The hat was shipped to a wrong address and did not make it in time for Christmas. I called the store several times and no one would return my calls. I finally got in touch with a young lady that stated the hat had been returned to the store and would be shipped AGAIN to the right address. After 3 days I sent an email for follow-up and I get an email that states the store had refunded my money. Not only did my husband miss out on his Christmas, it will be weeks before his hat arrives from another store. Own a Stetson cowboy hat but wanted a fedora dress hat. I wear a size 8 and most places just don't carry that size. Delmonico Hatter had a Stetson Chatham fur fedora in size 8 Caribou. I drove to the store about 5 years ago or so, give or take. Trying to find a parking spot sucked, but hey, it's New Haven, during the week-the parking is going to be bad-so it's not the store's fault. Bought a nice hat, and it's still in very good shape. I wear it more in the winter-it keeps the balding head warm and the snow off of my face. It's also good for when it rains. Customer service was great for me. One of the employees was just getting back into the shop, I think from lunch, as I was walking in-talk about great timing. Got prompt service and exactly what I was looking for at the time. I wish that I had had more time and money to spend down there then-I would like to buy a couple of more hats but I am a hard fit and don't want to order online and possibly have to return it. We purchased a fairly expensive Stetson hat from them this past week via Amazon for my father-in-law for Christmas - they said it was "in-stock" and ready to ship by December 8th-December 9th, and then 10-days later, we get a phone call directly from Delmonico Hatter saying they don't have it, won't have it till mid January, long after Christmas. Sorry! They readily confirmed that the problem was theirs, not Amazon's, but they wasted our time and tied-up our money for nearly 10-days, all for nothing. It was a tremendous inconvenience, and of course, they quickly deleted our order off of our Amazon Order page so that we couldn't provide them with a negative review on Amazon.
