This is about small business and service. I never looked good in hats. So here is the thing. You go into the store. Where there are 100s. Probably thousands of choices. And a person that's helps you figure out what you want and what looks good. And you try them on. This is why you go to a specialty store with inventory. And knowledgeable people. read more

Excellent service and the best quality hats around. I've been coming here for many years since diagnosed with cancer.

They have the best customer service. I'm from Texas and if you order from another state they package with care. I recommend to everyone.

Ordered a Borsalino hat online. Arrived quick, no signature required, and was a perfect fit. Beware of other places online in Conn. (It's not just a state). I doubt I'll need more than two of these (dark blue and a dark grey), however for maybe another panama I'll look here first. Excellent job people! read more

I could not be any more happy with the services I received from Delmonico Hatters in December 2022. I bought a Borsalino Bellagio, a Stetson Pinnacle, and a Stetson Inwood and all three hats arrived at my doorstep in lightening speed and so well packaged. I asked for hat size reducers with the new hats and Delmonico Hatters was so kind to include a personal note with instructions. One of the hats regrettably had dimensional issues and when I called the store, they were very professional and most eager to make things right. They immediately sent out a replacement without requesting that I send the faulty one back first. I got the replacement in two days and it was perfect. Thank you Delmonico Hatters for being a honest and no non-sense business and for taking care of your customers. I look forward to my next purchase with you! read more

Very knowledgeable staff with a wide selection of hats. Purchased a nice panama for my husband.

Always the very finest at Delmonico Hatter. I'm originally from New Haven and every time I come back to visit I stop there and grab a new lid! Customer service is always honest in helping customers make the right choice. Thank you guys! read more

I purchased a hat that was very hard for me to find from them and not only was it less than most other places but the hat was shipped so WELL and I received it super quick. I mistakenly ordered the wrong size and they were super helpful with the exchange process- I am on the other side of the country. Will definitely be purchasing from DelMonico again! read more

Been there twice selection is great. Service is aweful. I was not acknowleged when I entered the store. I had to ask for assistance while the salesman continued a casual conversation. I wont bother going back. read more

I want to be sure to recognize greatness when I experience great, quality, prompt service. I am a California customer that does business with DelMonico Hatter. I do so, not only because they sell the Akubra, Bailey, and Borsalino, brands I prefer, but for their service. Something I find missing in many places of business today. A few weeks ago I received a new Akubra Adventurer, for my 77th birthday, which they kindly bashed for me, and a new hat brush. Another prized addition to my collection of over 40 quality hats. I am well known around town and with my business associates for the hats I wear daily. Believe it or not hats have become a trade mark. Many ask where can I get one like your wearing. I respond, DelMonico Hatter, of course. If you want a hat, look to DelMonico, you will not be sorry. Another plus hats are a great way to protect your head from exposure to the sun's rays. My skin doctor recommended to me over 40 years ago after a bout with skin cancer! Hats are useful and fun. read more

Such a neat, historic hat shop in the Orange St district of downtown New Haven. Their staff with very knowledgeable and kind. They took measurements of my head to help me find the perfect fit for my two new hats and even stretched them a little, all for a better fit. The customer service was superb. Love my new hats and will be back here when looking for another! read more

This fab store is straight out of the old days where personalized was king. From measuring your head to the patience of the staff helping you find the right hat, the feeling I got after leaving Delmonico's is that I had found the Hope Diamond. Top Shelf service and selection, not to mention doing business with a store that's been around over 100 years, made me even happier doing business with them. May Delmonico's success continue for another 100 + years. As far as I'm concerned, Delmonico Hatter is a "Diamond in the Rough." My new favorite place to shop in New Haven, CT. read more

It's completely mind blowing that a hat shop like this exists here in New Haven because places like this just don't exist anymore. A lot of them went out of business decades ago. I think what keeps these guys in business is the fact that they have a very large online presence. Here's a little know fact....Delmonico's has been a brick-n-mortar retail mainstay in downtown New Haven for decades. My grandfather used to patronize them back in the old days, at a time when hats were more in style... They have lots of hats. If you find a make/model online and you don't see it on the floor, just ask. They have a large warehouse of hats right next door and can search it of need be. I'm not a really big hat person, but recently when looking for a quality pork pie hat, Delmonico's came through for me. The staff is both knowledgable and helpful. Prices are OK. I found them to be comparable to most online prices. Expect to pay somewhere between $50 and $120 for a good hat. They sell Bailey hats (which I like). The only real negative is that the only mirrors in the store are located way in the back of the store. They're somewhat a pain in the ass to reach because of the clutter in the store. I REALLY REALLY wish they had a decent full body mirror located closer to the hats. It would make the whole experience much more convenient. Because believe me, if you're like me you're going to try on lots of hats before picking the right one, and unfortunately that involves a lot of mirror time. PS: They put a small Delmonico label in all their hats. It's a nice touch. read more

DelMonico Hatter - Hats Near Me - New Haven, Connecticut

Order #: 733117 Date: 10/04/2019 Stetson Pawnee Gun Club 44032, Black, 7 1/8 Online Purchase I am thrilled with my hat. Your shop was one of the few places that had this style. I am so glad that I came across your site. I am an avid hat collector and your shop by far is the best I have purchased from. You have an excellent selection and hard to find styles in an array of sizes. Your prices are fair and your service during my transaction was excellent and swift. The care of packaging for shipment, the condition of the hat and it's box were all impeccable. Going forward, your shop will be the first place I go for my hat purchases. read more

SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE While I have had *some* luck in buying shoes on the Internet, for some reason the idea of trying hats on remotely seemed absolutely absurd to me: more so than with shoes, fit is *very* elusive with hats. And the prospect of paying the costs of shopping in NYC (cabs, parking, and then taxes on top of it all) add insult to uncertainty. That's why I was delighted to find Delmonico on the web. I had a quick chat about what I might be able to find, and stopped off on my last trip to NYC to see what was in stock. I spoke with Ben and he patiently allowed me to try on maybe a dozen styles, explaining the differences in material, the benefits of a specific crown or brim size, and the rest. Ben probably took a half an hour to go over all my questions. As it turned out, I just could not decide. The hat I really wanted was just enough above my "mental budget" that I decided to defer the decision. Flash forward a couple of weeks, and I've decided to go ahead with the more expensive hat, but i can't find the business card with Ben's name and the hat specifics! What to do? Well, I called and the young lady who picked up listened carefully, asked a couple of questions, and just happened to be facing the hat box with my name on it! Brilliant! By purchasing it by phone, I avoid the local sales tax and the shipping was free. I was hoping to get it by the next Monday, but it arrived the very next day. The product is superior, I was graciously educated, and the service was utterly superior. I highly recommend Delmonico. read more

My father told me I HAD to write this review. Seriously. His exact words were, "Nova, I want you to write Mr. Delmonico an excellent review." Being the amazing daughter that I am, here it goes. As far as I can remember, my dad has been a "hat guy." Fedoras are his signature hats but he has tons of different styles. My dad really loves his hats and he knows all about the particulars of hat collecting (style, brands, prices, value). It was my dad who introduced me to Delmonico Hatter because I was clueless that New Haven had a premier hatter in it's midst. At his request, I took my dad to Delmonico's to have a few of his hats cleaned. The whole way there dad educated me about how Delmonico is a family-owed business and has been in New Haven for over 100 years. He had seen an ad for Delmonico in one of his hat magazines and he was really excited that there was a hatter so close to me, so he HAD to make a special trip to Connecticut; to see his baby girl (of course) and to visit this legendary hatter (mostly to see the hatter Haha). From the moment we walked in the shop, Mr. Delmonico was a class act. His knack for customer service is unparalleled. Dad only came in to have two hats cleaned. By the time we left he had bought two more hats and he and Mr. Delmonico were chatting like old friends. I was impressed, that type of salesmanship and attention to the customer is hard to find these days. Mr. Delmonico literally walk us around the shop showing my dad hats and telling us about his inventory. In addition to the storefront, Delmonico has taken his operations online (http://www.delmonicohatter.com/SFNT.htm) and he says most of his sales now come from the online business. The online store is cool but getting that personal touch from Mr. Delmonico is worth a trip to the shop. If you do venture to the shop, keep in mind that they validate parking in the lot directly across the street. That's MAJOR KEYS! If you know parking in downtown New Haven, you understand the value of this. Hats off (or on...lol) to Delmonico Hatters! read more

What a wonderful business! I've ordered several hats from them over the past few years, each time it's been a pure pleasure. On at least two occasions I've dealt directly with Mr. Delmonico and he's a business owner that really has customer service down to a fine art. Once I saw a Stetson that they did not carry but Delmonico ordered it for me from the factory with no extra cost and their usual great service. Earlier this week I ordered a new hat and was flat out shocked when it arrived today well packed in two boxes and looking just as advertise and at the lowest price I could find on the web! read more

I've shopped at Delmonico Hatter for years - I've owned at least five hats purchased there - and although there are stores that match its selection, I've never found one to match its service. They bring years of experience, knowledge and skill, and a genuine commitment to fulfill their customer's needs to each person coming through the door. Entering the shop feels a little like a step back in time, partly because speciality shops have become more rare, partly because men's hats are less common, and partly because the back of the store jams display space, customer service space, and work space together. I remember that from my childhood; it's very rare to see a sewing machine, say, in a clothing shop today. They've got lots of hats. And a warehouse next door to support their web business so they'll fetch even more to try (they did for me). As far as I can tell, they carry all the major hat makers around right now, with prices ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred. Parking on Elm Street can be tricky, so they made sure to let me know that they validate tickets for the lot across the street. I've also ordered from them online, and had good results: I've liked the hats, and they've arrived in good condition and on time. But there's nothing at all like a visit there. They don't treat you like a king: they treat you like a best friend. read more

Great shop with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I purchased my first (and later, my second) fedora from them. They have a great selection from conservative to more fashionable options. I've also bought from their website, which is clunky. If you have the option definitely go into the store, the experience is worth it. read more

I know little about hats, but I can't imagine you can go wrong here. Attentive owner-operator, takes the time to make sure you're entirely satisfied with your purchase, willing to help you find something within your budget. Large inventory for men and they appeared to have a good sized inventory for women. Very happy to support this local business. They have private parking, ask inside. read more

The best hat shop ever. Jesus christ, just go in there and try on some hats and buy one. You can get a beret for cheap or go hog wild and get, like, a Borsolino or something... Winter's coming. You want to look good. Fashionista has hats, but it's hit or miss with the fit. At Delmonico's, your hat is fitted. They'll also reblock your hat if it needs it. I have purchased several hats from Delmonico. Most orders have gone well minus one or two hats with noticeable brim flaws. One Stetson Open Road had such a warped brim that even a hatter couldn't fix it. My fault for not sending it right back. Maybe it was Stetson's fault. Who knows but it wasn't a cheap hat at $199. Now when I order I am sure to specify no warped brims. 2 months ago I placed a pre-order for 3 new Stetsons and fast forward to now they were still waiting on one to arrive. I thought for sure they had charged me a few months ago but after checking my CC Account that wasn't the case. I canceled my order for two reasons. 1. Hat money is spare money. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't. Chances are if you wait 2 months to fill my order I won't have it anymore. 2. The customers service rep got snippy with me when I told her that I needed to verify that my account was not charged. Don't get snippy on my dime. I needed to verify it since your order fulfillment took so long. I've got tons and tons of hats. I probably saved myself a few bucks by canceling my order. read more

What an absolute jewel of a shop! Years ago my mother worked at Best & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York, perhaps the best children's clothing store in the western hemisphere where employees practiced world class customer service and salesmanship. My wife did the same at Brooks Brothers' headquarters store on Madison Avenue in New York, another best-in-class shop. Ladies and gentlemen, New Haven's DelMonico Hatter is in the same league. Absolutely superb. Where else can you shop in a store that has operated since the Theodore Roosevelt administration. And wears its history very well. I long knew what I wanted (Stetson Gun Club Royal Flush) but hesitated to make the purchase on the internet. Didn't trust key strokes and mouse clicks to get me the right size and adjustments. I despaired of no brick and mortar shop. Then, several months ago I learned of DeMonico's right under my nose in nearby New Haven. Called and spoke with Christina who invited me in. ("We'll stamp your ticket for the parking lot across the street.") She and the owner should write a book on customer service. There's a very special comfortable pride, justifiable pride, that comes from working at an outfit that's acknowledged to be best-in-the world. It hits you like a physical force. I enjoyed that working for 51 years at Sikorsky Aircraft. And these people, together with Stetson, (reported to have had its best year ever last year) have it in spades. So yes Five Stars for a truly terriific shop. Enjoy! read more

I've order about five hats from these people online and I've finally come to the conclusion these people are ambivalent about customer service. I've asked email questions about fairly expensive hats that have gone unanswered. I asked for the hat box to the particular hats I purchased and you'd think I asked for their first born. I have to take their store branded box and they behave as if your really asking for something extreme. I use other online vendors also and these are the only people I've had that problem with. I have a hat on the way now and after I receive it I will determine if we'll continue business. read more

The shop is not handicap accessible! If it is it's not marked. When I walked in I was not greeted or asked if I needed assistance. I ordered a Stetson Open Road in silverbelly online and received the wrong color hat. When I called they were a bit snippy and wouldn't take responsibly even though the hat pictured on my order was the correct color. They said they hat in the correct color in stock, then they said they did not. The run around, phone calls and emails delayed my ordering from another company and I didn't have the hat for the birthday which was disappointing. They have nice hats but the customer service isn't the greatest. read more

First the good news: They usually ship orders within a day or two. Now the bad news: They are real stinkers when it comes to responding to email questions. I was especially upset over this because I was a very good customer - about $2,000 in orders over a six month period (average hat price about $300). I then emailed the owner, Ben, twice over a 3 week period with a question. He chose to ignore my emails, so I took my business elsewhere. read more

I ordered a stetson hat for a Christmas present; Web site stated that the hat would be shipped in three weeks. I called the store the week before Christmas and Delmonico did not have a hat BUT could send me a hat that had been sized wrong. The hat was shipped to a wrong address and did not make it in time for Christmas. I called the store several times and no one would return my calls. I finally got in touch with a young lady that stated the hat had been returned to the store and would be shipped AGAIN to the right address. After 3 days I sent an email for follow-up and I get an email that states the store had refunded my money. Not only did my husband miss out on his Christmas, it will be weeks before his hat arrives from another store.
