Came here around 11 AM on a Saturday as I've been looking for a place to get a good sandwich near me. There was easy to find free street parking right outside the restaurant. The place had a few people in, but I was quickly helped! I placed an order initially for the chicken, broccoli, rabe, but they were out of some ingredients (which makes sense, looks like they were processing some large orders) so I instead opted for a chicken bomb, one of their hot sandwiches. I went for a sub (over a roll) and got a drink, my total came out to around $22. I grabbed my drink from the side fridge, and was told it would take a few minutes. There are a few tables and a TV playing, so a nice place to wait, and eat if you're in a hurry. There are also several tables outside which would be nice to eat at in the warmer months. Quickly, my sandwich was ready and warm! The person working gave me a bag which she had added napkins to. The sandwich was significantly bigger than expected. Honestly for me, two meals but easily could have been three. Generous with portions of everything too. I will definitely be back to try more of their sandwiches and their pizzas! read more

Del Monaco's Italian Market is a small Italian market, delicatessen, bakery and pizzeria that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1969. It was founded by the Del Monaco family. The market carries a variety of products including olive oils, canned tomatoes, antipasto specialties, pasta, and various Italian imports. However, they really shine when it comes to their prepared foods. The market makes a number of dishes in house which include fresh bread, deli sandwiches, hot Italian sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, pasta dishes, stuffed breads, calzones, and even New Haven-style pizza! Del Monaco's also offers catering services. I recently stopped at Del Monaco's for lunch. I had been there once before and I remember that their sandwiches were pretty good. I haven't been back in a while because they have VERY limited hours: only Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 am until 3 pm. I happened to have a day off from work, so I was able to get to the market in the early afternoon. I ordered their "Chicken Cutlet & Broccoli Rabe" sub on fresh Italian bread with melted mozzarella. It was phenomenal! I decided to make the most of my visit and ordered a large "Mozzarella Pizza" to bring home for my family for dinner. Not long after ordering the pizza, I overheard a staff member yell out, "No more pizza orders." They had run out of dough for the day, and I got my pizza order in just in time. My family and I were also planning on going to the beach the following day, so I decided to order a couple of more deli sandwiches to bring along. I ordered an "Italian Dream" (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted pepper, Stella table cheese) for myself and an "Italian Combo" (ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone) for my wife. My family and I all enjoyed the pizza later that day for dinner, and my wife and I loved the sandwiches at our beach trip the following day. There aren't too many Italian markets like this left. Del Monaco's is a real gem and I highly recommend stopping by for one of their delicious Italian sandwiches or a tasty pizza pie. read more

Fantastic little local market and deli. If I lived here, I'd be a regular - like most of the other people in here that seem to be known by name and their "usual." Not many tables inside, but most of the people are taking orders to go. And the phone is ringing non-stop with orders. Definitely a place the locals know as good. The Italian Combo sandwich is huge - all the sandwiches are huge. Piled high with meat and cheese on nice, soft Italian bread. There are also some hot dishes available (hot and ready to go, pizza by the slice, whole pizzas. Definitely worth a try if you are anywhere close by. read more

I arrived early at the airport, and I wanted something for lunch. I found Delmonaco's up the street from the airport, literally walking distance. I walked in expecting typical deli fare; instead,, I got the best lunch I've had in months! I had a prosciutto and provolone sandwich. The prosciutto was delicious, but the biggest surprise was the bread. This is proper, home-made Italian sandwich bread, not the fluff that passes for bread in most of the US. Best chicken and broccoli rabe sandwich ever! Every time I'm in town I stop here and get one.

We recently moved to Morris Cove and so glad to have this amazing lunch place within walking distance. Only open for lunch and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Highly recommend calling in your order first (as they get very busy) and plan for 30 minutes in between doing so. They bake their own bread so sometimes they will sell out if it's close to closing time so plan ahead. Every time I call, I speak with very friendly staff even during the lunch rush. Everything we have tried has been delicious, my favorite so far being the Italian Bomb with lettuce/tomato/oil/vinegar added as well as the Steak and Cheese Overload (3 cheese). This decades old family run deli just got a nice facelift. Gone are the days of pre-breaded chicken cutlets. They are frying their own. The soups are good, the pizza is good and the bread they bake fir subs is incredible. They sell the bread if you want to take a loaf home. Service is always good snd almost everything is cooked to order. I'd like to see more foods to eat at hone offered but they are getting there. read more

This place has the most AMAZING bread in the history of bread. They have this Italian bread fresh baked in the morning. It is just delicious. I used to live close to this place so I used to get it everyday. Now once in a while I take the 45 min drive from Hartford just to buy some. Service is not the greatest as the owners are old school and they have been around for years. Don't worry about it, just go in, get your bread (or pizza, grinders, etc which are also good), pay and get out. read more

I wanted to love this place, as I live so close I can walk. I went in to get milk and a slice of pizza. The $2 thick slice of pizza was amazing! The milk was $5.49 a gallon, so I didn't get it. And when I didn't buy it, the owner/lady behind the counter actually followed me to the door, cigarette dangling in her lips, and barked "What's your problem?!?" at me. In front of my kids. Nice pizza by the slice, but I won't go there again. Also, hours are weird, they're almost never open, and there are not a lot of space to park. I think most of their money is made from cigarettes or construction worker lunches, I can't figure it out. read more

I grew up in the area and my family has been coming here for years. It's been about 15 years. Since my last visit, I stopped in today because I was in town and my daughters school is next to it. So I need to get some lunch. They had some really good suggestions on the sign at the door and a variety of choices when you approach the counter. The gentlemen was very attentive and professional. I placed my order and went around the corner to the back to get my beverage. Drinks were very cold. The cashier was very polite, she even apologized for the credit card machine taking too long, which in my opinion, not long at all. I've read the other reviews, I don't understand how customer can scrutinize prices of merchandise. The business owner has to stay in business so not so commonly stocked item can be more expensive than a corporate store, they just don't order that much to get discounted rates. People have bad days, give this store more than one visit. read more

I live about as close as one can get to this place. Always smells amazing. The amount of traffic on any given day can attest to the number of people who love the food. They are a tiny family shop and they do import some italian foods you wont readily find elsewhere so yes some things can be a bit pricey but mmmm. And i have a gluten allergy so they make my steak and cheese in a tin container for me and we often sit out on their patio on a quiet saturday and enjoy our lunch with our dog :) read more

Although I live nearby and they make a mean grinder, I refrain from going here, unless desperate. I give them only two stars for the following reasons. 1. I had a large group coming to dinner and last minute need some ground beef. Instead of going to a large grocery store, I went here because I was already running really late. I stood at the deli counter for a long time (5 minutes), before being acknowledged by the old man behind the counter (the owner). Just as he was about to take my order an elderly woman stepped up next to me. He nodded to me and said "Let me help her first". What was I supposed to do? I stood for another 10 minutes as he filled her deli order and they chatted. Now I was really running late. I ordered a pound of ground chuck at $4.99/pound. The owner went into the walk-in took out a large cut of beef, continued to cut off pieces, walked slowly to the grinder and ground up my beef. He slowly wrapped and priced it. I had now been in the store for 30 minutes. When I looked at the package it said $8.99. I said to the owner, "I ordered the chuck at $4.99". His answer was "I am all out of that, all I have is the sirloin." I said then you should have told me that when I ordered it! I handed him the beef and went to the grocery store. 2. The owners wife who works the front register is a cranky old woman. She is never friendly, very curt and can't crack a smile. One time I went there and she was smoking a cigarette at the register. Mind you this is a public place, a store, deli, restaurant and has seating right near the register. I said to her "You can't smoke here, this is a public place and a restaurant." She told me to mind my own business, she was the owner and can do anything she wants. FYI Both of these instances happened a while back. Don't know if things have changed. read more
