Open Baladin was on my list of the most popular bars in Rome on Yelp (in terms of number of reviews) and it was close to where we were at, so we made out way in the afternoon on a Friday. Ambiance (4/5): Open Baladin looks a lot different than your typical Roman establishment. Bright colors, quirky decor, and a beautiful bar area are some of the highlights here. We sat at a table as we wanted to avoid the bar stools (no back support so I've never been a fan). Service (3/5): Typical Italian service. Not terribly attentive or friendly but gets the job done. We had to track down our waiter once or twice to order a beer and close out but that's standard fare in Europe. Food (3/5): My partner in crime had a burger while I had a sandwich with proscuitto and cheese. Pretty much your typical Italian sandwich. Fresh and adequate. Though a bit overpriced. Drinks (4.5/5): This is the highlight. Open Baladin has a fantastic selection of beers including those that I would qualify outside of your typical run-of-the-mill. They have a Belgian beer section of the menu which is always an indication that a bar takes their beer seriously. And most interestingly, for me, they have grape beer . . . say what?! I had never heard of it either. Beer made with grapes, that's a first. While it's not something I would order often, I very much enjoyed trying something new and unique like this. And here I thought grapes were just used to make wine! If you're looking for a cool spot to grab a brew, with a fantastic beer list, and a different vibe than your typical Italian bar, make sure to check them out!

The chicken was my favorite, but we enjoyed the meatball and a few suppli with some cold beers while we were here. At this point, we had been eating lots of pizza, pasta, and sandwiches for the last two weeks, but I guess we just couldn't stop! Thankfully, their food is a bit different from traditional Italian restaurants. It was the little break from the norm we needed to round out our culinary adventure. Let me start with the beer. Being from California, we desperately missed our beloved breweries. Not a one in sight in Italy, until Bir & Fud. Finally! A location, at last, that had a beer other than Peroni and Nastro Azzurra. We marveled at the beer list! Beers of all types from all over Italy, it was truly heaven. We settled on a Saison and an IPA, delicious. Now we get to say we had an IPA brewed in the hills of Milan! Next, we split the cod fritter to start. It was mixed with fresh fish and potato and fried to perfection, yet it remained light and wasn't greasy. We split their pizza that had a lot of roasted chilies, unfortunately I can't remember the name. It was just the right amount of spicy and rich with just slightly toasted mozzarella. I'll let you in on a little secret shame: we were full yet so in love with the atmosphere and food that we ordered another pizza. Yes, another one! We split the classic Margarita pizza. We didn't finish it, though. So I guess we aren't that gluttonous. The pizza wasn't the best, but we honestly went for the atmosphere change and beer. Moral of the story: we didn't want to leave and probably stayed way too long. But, it was the perfect way to round out a once in a life time trip.

The place is a gem shown to me by a local, which says something. Tucked nicely into Trastevere, you'll probably already be in the area and should make the stop. If pizza isn't your thing, and maybe it would be if you tried it here, then perhaps come to sample some of there excellent craft beers. I sampled the smoked schlenkerla urbock. It was one of the most unique and tasty I've ever had. Definitely smoked. I could go on and on, but forget the hype and just come see for yourself.

Still an enjoyable lunch, but not a very memorable one, partly because I'd had so much other pizza on the trip. They don't serve big pizzas or calzones at lunch sadly, so they only have personal pies. Thicker dough, somewhat crunchy crust, not my favorite topping options but the marinara and margherita were both solid. Could easily finish two of them though so one likely won't be filling. The cacio e pepe was pretty good, too heavy on the cheese and probably a bit much for lunch. Stick to the pizza and beer.
