I had a one-on-one with Mark at my apartment, and I actually came across him in his van on the way back from our walk, waiting for our appointment time. We walked back to my apartment and there he asked a bunch of questions and got to know Hammy, and Ham loved him! Mark explained that it was because they had met outside first and then proceeded into the apartment afterwards, while Mark ignored him the whole time they were outside. He spent nearly 2 hours with me, and we took Ham on a walk where he impressed Mark with how good of a walker he is! My parents actually visited the next day for Easter, and Mark gave me the best way to re-introduce my dad- away from the apartment, while ignoring him. It worked! While their last interaction was filled with barking, snapping, and growling (from Ham, not my dad), as soon as we got back to the apartment, Hamlet was all over my dad with affection. (I included a picture and that's my dad's lap that Hamlet is sitting on!) I now feel like I have the right tools to introduce Hamlet to men in the future and to make sure he is comfortable with them. Entrusting Mr. Barkypants, my first-born son, to a dog walker is akin to how I imagine it might…read morefeel to someday entrust a less furry child of mine to a nanny: He/She sure as hell better be committed, conscientious, able to survive blizzards*, and love Mr. Barkypants as his/her own. Using this (perhaps slightly unreasonable) standard, I interviewed many, many dog walkers before I found Dean Gray of The Dog Train, a dog walking and training company that Dean and his business partner own and operate. Though I haven't yet had to put them to the blizzard test*, it is clear that Dean is an excellent dog walker and human being, more generally. Importantly to me, Dean and his business partner are the only dog walkers in their small company and they generally only walk one dog at once (or three dogs, together, at the most, who have had time to acclimate to one another). I feel strongly about not having just any random person walk Mr. Barkypants: I've witnessed how some walkers who work at larger operations treat (or rather mistreat) the 5-10 dogs they walk at once. Sadly, it doesn't seem uncommon for some dog walkers, on the Upper West Side at least, to roughly yank leashes or yell and scream at dogs, or to refuse to stop walking to allow one of their charges to use the little dog's room, or to tie dogs up to a post in the park while the walker enjoys a cigarette and long chat with his friends. I am confident that Dean does NOT do this; Mr. Barkypants would probably behave very differently with him than he does. Interestingly, though Mr. Barkypants isn't terribly fond of strangers and he is particularly non-fond of strangers who are male and who wear hats, he took to the hat-wearing Dean like he took to liver treats from the first or second walk on. Dean has a gentle, quiet, calm, non-domineering manner with dogs (and humans, really). He isn't embarrassed about speaking to dogs in goofy voices -- a talent I quite appreciate. Moreover, wrt his human dealings, too, Dean is prompt and as honest as Abe: He lets us know when he isn't able to walk a full hour (because of severe weather or sickness) and deducts from his pay despite our asking him to take the full amount. In truth, I do find Dean's business partner, Jessie, to be less conscientious. In contrast to Dean, who deducts whenever he does not walk the full hour -- even if it's due to circumstances beyond his control like extreme heat -- in our experience, Jessie consistently shaved time off of walks. I know this is not unusual for dog walkers in Manhattan, but it just highlighted for us the difference between a truly excellent walker and a more run of the mill one. In one instance, she also did not call us when she was unable to open the inner door of our home, until after the time for the walk had passed, claiming that she had called Dean for our number and that he didn't have it. (He does have it and texted it to her.) If she'd called when she'd arrived, we would've been able to arrange for her to get in the door. She insisted on charging us for the walk, anyway, because she had stopped by. Luckily, we have Dean almost all the time. Rates, by the way, are extremely reasonable for Manhattan dog walking, especially since Mr. Barkypants gets Dean all to himself on walks. According to their website, Dean is bonded and insured as a dog walker and is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Dean is also Animal Behavior College certified. I haven't hired Dean for dog training, since Mr. Barkypants is already perfect. ;) But I can speak with knowledge about Dean's excellent credentials as a dog walker. He *will* treat your dogs with respect and patience -- or at least I'm pretty sure they will based on how they've treated my first born son. I can't recommend him enough. ---------- *I've walked for an hour and a half through snowstorms while sleep deprived at midnight (uphill both ways, barefoot ;) to give my baby a good walk. Anyone who takes him out better give a shiznit -- or better, yet, two.

My little mutt, Ziggy, is as sweet as can be with people and his dog buddies at the park, but he…read morerecently developed some bad leash aggression habits and had become increasingly territorial in and around the house with regard to strange dogs walking by, etc. It was all becoming kind of stressful for me so I contacted Renee to get some professional help. Renee was very informative and extremely helpful with the situation. We did a private session where she showed me various methods that have proven very effective in helping him with his issues. I also signed up for two leash aggression group sessions, so I could see how he did with other dogs in the class. Renee explained to us how important it was to get the training method right and be consistent for as long as it takes. Zig is doing much better. He has his moments, but many times it's because I didn't catch and correct the behavior in time and I know we are still at the beginning of our little journey. I am confident in Renee's advice because I've seen it work and I know that eventually, with time, Ziggy will be as confident as I am. My favorite thing about working with Renee is that it is obvious she knows and understands dogs and she shares her knowledge in a very unique, funny manner. It's also obvious that she cares. After both the private session and the group sessions, Renee was wonderfully responsive to emails/questions, always inquired about Ziggy's progress and offered additional suggestions if certain things didn't seem to be working. Ziggy and I are both thankful we found her and will definitely be in touch with her for some of the other doggie classes she offers!!!

She helped me turn my little guy around. Alexis's methods are safe and easy to learn, and Maurice absolutely adores her! My dog contracted kennel cough at Brooklyn Dog Training Center (Doggie Academy) and they refused to…read moreprovide a partial refund for the class he missed after getting sick. They wanted me to come to the class without my dog and leave him home alone sick. The facility is very dirty and run down and the owner acted very unprofessionally with regard to the entire situation. Owner is a total liar. She never spoke to my vet, she contacted my vet's office via email and asked a hypothetical question about whether a dog showing symptoms the next day would have contacted it at her facility so they responded accordingly. Yet my specific dog did not show symptoms the next day, he showed symptoms a few days later. Sarah is being sneaky and deceptive in order to get them to provide a response in writing so Doggie Academy can avoid any legal liability. My actual vet will be writing a letter confirming that my dog did most likely contract kennel cough at Doggie Academy. Would not recommend, absolute con artists and putting many dogs health in jeopardy by not notifying their clients that their facility has kennel cough.

Interesting that this is their first review…read more My wife and I brought our 3 month old puppy for their puppy socialization class last Friday. We left before the class was over. If you can imagine how Park Slope parents are with their kids, you can figure out how they are with their puppies. Although I am fine with people babying their puppies (not really but it's your dog), if the trainer is correcting the human issues, which she wasn't. 3 examples. 1) There was a puppy there that was showing aggression and dominance. (A lot of low toned growling, biting, not nipping, and when taken away was very aggressive towards its owners with biting and growling. The trainer didn't remove that dog from the group and didn't try to correct the owner's handling of the dog. The owners were definitely new owners and had no clue what they were doing. Which is fine but puppy socialization classes are for the owners as much as the puppies. 2) Our puppy is very well socialized. It doesn't have any problems with any dogs or humans, including in this class. Later in the class a very nervous and timid terrier came in. It was hiding under chairs and in the corners with its tail between its legs. My puppy went over to it and tried to play with it, Chased it around and, admittedly, prob tried a little too hard to play with the new puppy (which is how some dogs will react to that kind of energy from another dog). But instead of trying to help the timid, nervous puppy, the trainer took our dog out of the area and proceeded to say "if there is anyone who played with *name of our dog* nicely and wants to have their dog in his area...". Needless to say it wound up being every dog in with our puppy and the timid terrier and an aggressive, very small, puppy by themselves. 3) Our puppy, probably 75% of the time, when playing with other dogs, is the first one to go on its back and show belly. If anyone knows anything about dogs, this is a sign of submission, AND you know that puppies play by nipping and "mouthing". So, he was playing with another puppy, was on his back, and mouth was open (not even nipping at this point). Another dog was on top of him and the owner of that dog was saying "Too much teeth, I'm seeing too much teeth. I can't handle it" and pulls her puppy away from our dog. The trainer, right there, once again doesn't correct the owner's behavior. Overall, there was a very tense energy in the room. There were too many puppies for the space and the trainer was either overwhelmed, burnt out, or both, which led to the owners being nervous and tense, which led to the puppies feeling and feeding off of that energy. It wasn't a good situation and definitely encouraged the nervous aggressive dogs to be nervous and aggressive. Lastly, don't call the puppies "your kids" to the owners. This gives the mentally of them being our babies and treating them as human babies. They are puppies and need to be treated as puppies or that's when you get older dogs with aggressive and protective issues. I gave 2 stars because I like that they are doing this but they need to figure it out. Maybe do it more often so you don't have every puppy in the area going in the one day a month. We go to Wag Club every monday for puppy socialization and it is relaxed and fun for both the puppies and owners. They correct any puppy issues (the actual cause) and teach the owners how to deal with the issues.
