I started going to Dekalb Dental in 2020 because I moved to Dekalb during covid and had an abscessed tooth due to an incorrectly done crown at my previous dentist. They were the only dentist that would take me as a new patient. No other local dentists would take new patients at the time because it was the height of covid. I guess that should have been my first red flag. After 2 years of multiple fillings and honestly feeling like they were just after my money, I finally switched to Sycamore Dentistry. They have had to fix two teeth that were done wrong at Dekalb Dental. One was a filling, the second was the original crown I had the abscess in. Today they removed the old crown and discovered temporary filling material that was left inside my sealed tooth! This was not sterile and was deteriorating inside my tooth! The dentist said within a year or two I would have lost the tooth entirely if they hadn't caught it. Dekalb Dental is negligent. Please avoid this place at all costs and save yourself thousands of dollars on redone dental work and even maybe a few teeth! read more

The folks who work in this office are very nice, but their practice model is to try to upcharge you on all sorts of stuff that insurance doesn't cover. During my initial visit for a regular cleaning, they mentioned the possibility that I might need a deep cleaning at an additional charge (I didn't because I take great care of my teeth). They also suggested a light to scan for oral cancer and Fluoride that insurance would not have covered, which I passed on. They also suggested I replace all my remaining metal fillings with ceramic ones even though the x-rays showed no evidence that they were failing (which would have cost about $2,000 out of pocket). I do not plan on going back because I just didn't trust the information they were giving me. UPDATE: If I could give this practice 0 stars, I would. I was sent a bill for $80 for my routine cleaning and x-rays a couple of weeks after I had them done. I have NEVER owed anything out-of-pocket for a routine cleaning and x-rays in all the years I've had dental insurance and the $80 I was billed amounted to what I used to pay for a cleaning out-of-pocket before I had insurance. This practice's prices are absolutely exorbitant! I took my 2 daughters to nearby Bosma Dental today and was highly impressed with their office. read more

If I can give negative I would, they suck the receptionist hung up on me after making me drive all the way out there just to go back home and when I called back to speak to a manager they told me she would call me on Monday .. it's now Friday. 10 years ago when I was a naive college student I trusted this dentist to help me. Instead they pulled out one of my teeth without permission (not even the tooth is gone into see them about) but they then tried to charge me for it and then refused to help replace the giant gap I have now. Don't go here, they are crooks and will try and scam you out of your money by doing unethical and unneccesay things. 10 years ago I got no help from them trying to get this resolved and 10 years later I still have a reminder that these guys are con artists Edit: Lance I just spoke with your office manager. She has terrible customer service and only wanted to inform me that this is my fault and you guys aren't responsible for anything. Good hire with that one! Brandie Guerrettaz is the person in charge of accounts. Do not trust her. I received a bill in the mail and called to inquire about what was owed as this was from an appointment months ago and I was certain insurance was responsible for the balance. Brandie was confused about why I owed the balance as well. I had a ton of visits and Brandie got very frustrated looking through the account. She got so irritated that she gave up and told me to pay or she was sending to collections. This bill had not even reached its due date yet so going to collections should not have even been a question! This is not only unprofessional but unethical. Due to lack of training and frustration with a customer you decide to send an account to collections. Couple of things you could have done here Brandie. 1. Offer to call me back after you've had time to go through my account. 2. Request help from someone with the appropriate training. 3. Offer to send me an itemized statement so I can look through it. 2 days later I received a letter from collections asking for the balance. It is still worth mentioning that the final due date on my bill from Dekalb had not passed yet!!! So you prematurely sent this to collections!!! Wow. I called Dekalb Dental to ask wether or not I was to pay them or the collection agency, since I have 2 bills now for the SAME THING! Brandie told me to just pay them and that she never sent it to collections. I informed her that I did get a letter from them. She continued to lie and beg me to pay her. I then called the collection agency and they assured me that they had the account and that I was to pay them. I called Brandie back and she said she had just called them and cancelled the account. Huh? Thats confusing. A minute ago you said you never sent it, now you're saying you sent it and cancelled it. At this point I do not trust this company at all. I called the agency again and they once again said the account was open. I called Brandie back and again she was very defensive while pressuring me to pay her. I said that I was not comfortable paying anything as I did not want to put myself in a situation where I'm paying twice. She then said she would call and cancel the account. AGAIN. I have been to Dekalb Dental more than once and they have done a great job! I've even referred others. I will never be back. At no point in time should it require this much work to settle a balance. I should never feel as a customer that I am being scammed. I should also be able to inquire about my account and receive honest answers from an honest person. I most certainly should never feel that the person handling my account can send it to collections because they feel like it. 1. You cannot send an account to collections prematurely. 2. When you do send an account to collections. You should no longer be asking for that balance! YOU'VE TURNED THE ACCOUNT OVER. 3. Don't LIE to customers! Dekalb Dental, you are only as good as your weakest employee. The account manager will have contact with every person that enters your office. Brandie is dishonest, she has poor temperament, and she is not suitable for this position! This is the experience I had with her and others will as well. read more

Really wish I could give zero Stars. Absolutely useless staff. Mitchell Tatum who supposedly is a licensed dentist got visibly upset when I explained to him that I have an epinephrine sensitivity and will not be able to use it ever as his patient. Instead of continuing further he referred me to another dentist. I set this appointment up more than 3 months ago and explained at that time as well as when I was at the receptionist desk today that I cannot use epinephrine. None of this was a problem until the dentist walked in and said he prefers epinephrine and if I don't want to use it that he would refer me to someone else. Definitely a bait and switch. read more

I just moved here and switched dentists. I was informed that some of my old fillings should be changed out to the new, white colored fillings so I decided to do that. I never thought someone could screw up fillings, I've had a few fillings throughout my life. After they changed 2 fillings I could no longer chew on the replaced filling and require a root canal! Why do I have to pay for this root canal? I should have never allowed them to change out the filling, it had no issues whatsoever prior. Beware! read more

My hygienist Rachel is the absolute best! My teeth have never felt so clean :) I can tell that she is extremely thorough and passionate about what she does! she's an all-around great hygienist and an even better person! She's very personable and has a wonderful sense of humor. She assures her patients are comfortable and well-informed during their entire appointment. Rachel gives the best tips to improve your oral health without making you feel judged! Her and Dr. Pham make a wonderful team! I appreciate how well the office communicates with one another. Not happy at all. They were supposed to do a cleaning but did a deep cleaning that I not approved. Surprise when the bill arrived! I make this very clear to dentists from the beginning, that I will NOT be upcharged!!! They seem competent with their ability but now I do not trust them. read more

Very unethical business practice when it comes to insurance and will "recommend" unnecessary procedures in order to get more money out of the insurance companies AND patients! Went to the DeKalb Dental Group on Friday, August 14th to receive FREE dental work, extracting a broken wisdom tooth. Great staff, very professional, knowledgeable, and polite. They took great care in making sure they understood the problem, my medical history, and then pulled my wisdom tooth with little pain, promptly, and professionally. I go here once to twice a year. The place is clean and the staff was nice. My cleanings are are quick and thorough (no more than 20 min).

Love my dentist and hygienist. Staff up front is nice and helpful. Place is clean, hi-tech and professional. I don't get the fee schedule though. If they provided the best negotiated rate they have with any carrier to patients who self insure we would pay less than what we currently pay with the small policy we carry. In other words there appears to be a penalty for self insuring. They attempted to explain it to me but like the quote says "I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you"... read more

Dr. Caryn Ayarzagoitia and the hygienists are very attentive and realistic about affordable options for patients. Since coming to IL, I've been to a few awful dental facilities, and I was so pleased to finally find Dr. A. First dentist I chose when I first moved up here and needed work done. Dr. Ngyuen - not sure if I spelled his name correctly - was the dentist I had there. When my abscessed tooth started acting up again, I finally decided to have him work on it. I expected extreme surgery to be needed and a lengthy and grueling proceedure. After numbing me up - that whole side of my face was so numb, I couldn't even feel my ear or the top of my head - he got to work quickly. Not only was the proceedure painless, it was quick and minimally surgical - most he had to do was break the tooth into pieces to get it out. From the time I signed in to the time I walked out, I spent MAYBE 45 minutes there at the most. I would definitely recommend this office to someone who needed dental work. The only reason that I stopped going - and also the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 - is because I no longer had my insurance and the medical card isn't accepted here. read more

The office manager is a horrible unprofessional disrespectful witch. She does not know how to talk to customers and has horrible customer service skills. She didn't allow the doctor who by the way was awesome and so was the hygienist as was every one else. To explain or talk to me. She had the nerve to ask me was I a doctor. Had she been more professional and let the doctor explain to me why they would need to have clearance from my doctor before they pulled my tooth. I have had multiple teeth pulled and not once did the office manager say she had to get clearance from my doctor because I have type two diabetes and only take pills. Because of the steroids she is a joke. Don't spend my money where I am not respected I would have waited or had them call my other doctor who is across the street from them. The staff and dentist are nice, but their business practices are terrible. They unnecessarily replaced some of my fillings. They also charged my insurance company for pins when they put in a crown, except that a few years later when the crown became extremely loose, my new and much better dentist found no pins existed. All you need to do is Google DeKalb Dental Group reviews. You'll learn everything you need to know about why the one star. Now if you want to know why they're so bad, Google their parent company. Your eyes will be wide-open and your mouth will be shut tight just so they can't get their hands on your teeth. read more

I went here for years and then started talking to others at other practices after i got charged for a "deep" cleaning that was supposedly approved by insurance. It was not and i got billed hundreds for it. Then after i left they called and said they were mailing me a check as i had money in my account, about $400 and it never arrived. Dr Nguyen and hygienists are personable but they tack on charges and there was gauze left under a filling i had that new Dentist found. I saw the gauze! Dr Nguyen just kept prescribing antibiotics and it would have never healed had i not gone elsewhere. Do not use them. Not honest or capable. read more

I went here to get a tooth extracted. The whole time I was in the chair, the dentist and the assistant were having a full blown conversation while he was "working" on my tooth. He gave me too much numbing serum to where my cheek was numb for two days. After I gained feeling again in my mouth, it changed my smile. The serum had damaged my muscle! There are a few of these operations open in Sycamore/DeKalb under different names DeKalb Dental Group, Sycamore Dental by Dunkin Donuts on Rte 23 and they are run by Heartland Dental Group. I had a visit with them in 2012 while living in Sycamore. A co-worker referred me to this place. Same thing as previous posts. they wanted to replace 2 existing fillings and said I had 2 cavities. They also recommended a deep gum cleaning. I went there for a follow up and still felt pressured and sketchy vibes so I went back to my childhood dentist in St. Charles and he looked at me and said "see you in 6 months". I have going there for over 10 years had ok service not great but ok about 2 years ago my son had a bridge put in since day 1 he has complained about it not fitting right and being loose he was told that his gums needed to heal about 9-12 months last August they glued it in with Permanent glue he left for school in January he came home and once again complained about the bridge they told him it was fine not sure how they how his mouth felt but basically blew it off so now today he goes back and gets told that for $500 they can fix it REALLY after just 6 months ago they said it was fine I called and ask them what was going they stated it was not there problem I called there Corp office as the people there are only workers and have no ownership the said that they could do nothing. So here we spending more money and he will have to fly home from Colorado in a month to get it installed what great cust service I would very Leary of trusting that office with my dental needs as they do not stand behind there work read more

Went there for several years with all my kids and one day they were bought by a large corporation only interested in making money. They push things you don't need, charge you hundreds of dollars, and then send another bill. If this was the only dentist on the planet, I'd let my teeth rot out before I'd ever go there. read more

Dr Nguyen is one of the best dentists out there. He works well with kids. He is not an aggressive dentist and will only do work that is absolutely necessary. The hygienists are all great and are also great with kids. My kids love going there. read more

I moved my family to DeKalb Dental Group when they accepted my insurance and I didn't have to drive to Rockford anymore. First year they were OK. Then some company bought them out. From that point on every checkup for every family member resulted in "needed" dental work over $1,000 total. They got to my checkup and told me I needed a procedure I KNEW I didn't need. We went elsewhere. You should check this out by putting DeKalb Dental Group, DeKalb IL into a search engine. About three or four links down is a bulletin board with a lot of angry customers who feel ripped off. read more
