The injera was especially impressive--no overly sour aftertaste like I've had at many other Ethiopian restaurants. Every side dish was flavorful and honestly mouth-watering. I really like a good balanced, healthy meal with protein and greens, and this combo had everything I was hoping for. On our second visit, the host was at least warm and attentive, which made a big difference in the experience. Also worth mentioning--they have great deals on Mondays and Tuesdays. In today's economy, that definitely makes it more likely I'll be coming back. Overall, amazing food. Service just needs a bit more consistency.

Honestly, this meal was super filling since all the veggie side dishes also sit on a giant injera I liked the mild spice of the lamb as well as the spinach and lentil side dishes (the cabbage one was just ok). Also tried the Eritrean spicy black tea. Was really good but kept me up at night quite a bit. The service was quite prompt and friendly. Although they asked us to review in Google. We were glad to because the food and service was pretty nice. The ambiance felt a bit empty. The price is tad bit on the higher side given the quantity. Maybe more quality on the mains might be a good idea.

I was hanging out with a friend from across town & I wanted to try dinner at another restaurant further up on Commercial Dr. So we decided on drinks here first at Harambe Ethiopian Restaurant, while we waited for our standby reservation to come through at the other restaurant. My friend had been here before & highly recommended we come back again to eat. I got to try Ethiopian Honey Wine for the first time. It was refreshingly delicious. Sat at the bar & chilled. Saw various dishes coming out of the kitchen & the look & smell were causing my stomach to growl. Got to meet the owner Daniel - a very nice gentleman. He has been running this restaurant now for over 25 years. He expressed that times are hard, as noted by all the restaurant closures all over Metro Vancouver. But he's hanging in there so if you want to try Ethiopian food - consider Harembe & support local. Look out for more food pictures sometime in the later part Spring when I return.

Eating with our hands was a neat experience to enjoy the food the traditional way. The server told me to mix all the ingredients together but I wanted to taste each item first. Perhaps mixing it all would have been better as there were a couple items I found their taste to be a bit strong on their own. Personally I also found it on the oily side. The injera was great at soaking it all up but I was unable to finish the injera that was served at the bottom of all the ingredients at the end, with all the oil that was there. Overall it was a great experience and if I were to return, I would skip the combo and order a dish I liked.

Buddy and I were unsure what to have, so the waiter recommended the chef's platter (Mchaguzi wa Chef). This platter includes samaki bites (fried tilapia), kuku choma (BBQ marinated chicken), kebabs (minced lamb), and mishkaki (skewers of beef). Served with a pile of rice underneath and a pile of salad. There was also some naan and a bowl of spinach machica (mashed spinach cooked in curry sauce). There was also a plate with small containers of yogurt, tamarind sauce, and shredded coconut. Rather interesting combo. Everything was very tasty, though my buddy was convinced the deep fried tilapia was the frozen supermarket variety. No idea if this is true. The other thing that was special here is they sold Tusker beer which is from Kenya. Never seen it anywhere before, so it was definitely interesting to try. The bottles are 500mL too. Entrees range from $15.00 to $30.00. - Chutneys - yogurt, coconut, tamarind, hot sauce and mango. We were originally given a second hot sauce but the owner came by our table, told us it was "too spicy" and took it away. Strange. We didn't get to taste that one but the mango chutney was fantastic (a punch in the face, with a slightly mango note at the end). - Rice ($5.00) - good enough to compliment our two other entrees. - Naan ($3.00) - plain and a touch dense. - Kuku choma ($20.00) - decent char on the chicken, but slightly overcooked and dry. We dined in, sitting on their patio, and got the vegetable platter for 2 ($12.50 plus tax per person). You get a really nice plate of 5 different dishes--the standard Ethiopian dishes. Their misir wat was especially tasty, amply spicy and rich. You get plenty of injera to scoop up the food, but you can always ask for more. Very friendly service. I'd say this ranks up there among the best Ethiopian places in Vancouver -- it's just more no frills in terms of the atmosphere and whatnot. I'd return, but perhaps do takeout. Recommended.
