For all the reasons you see on the website: the impeccable cleanliness, comfort and loveliness of the guest rooms, the elegance and style of the house and its history; the dedication to the comfort and pleasure of the guests, the homemade breakfasts, the location, the relaxed but elegant and welcoming vibe. But most of all, for us, what distinguishes The Mulburn Inn are the hosts, Dave and Karen. Dave had me at "Hello." I called to say we would be late, and he was simply wonderful; we were headed to theater up the road apiece and Dave was relaxed and kind and completely accommodating. Later we discovered Karen and Dave have set up their screened-in porch for their guests, with clean-burning propane fire tables filled with amber fire glass. Despite the chilly North Country climes, we were wonderfully warm. But if we needed more, they also had outdoor heat lamps, enabling us to spend hours hanging outside. It is bliss. Best of all? Dave and Karen hung out on the porch with us. I have never laughed so hard as I did at Dave's expert, hilarious storytelling. (Karen is the perfect foil, filling in the blanks with actual facts when needed.) And if you are really lucky, you will catch a glimpse of their two elderly Dachshunds who are the sweetest. Plus, if you are curious about the fascinating, star-studded history of The Mulburn Inn (formerly The Ivie Estate), just ask, and Dave will regale you with the best stories of its history! Karen's décor with the perfect style of country and cool top off the experience, as do the snacks they put out for night owls like my husband and me. There's much more to tell, but I'm trying to keep this shorter than novel length. We loved it so much, we made reservations to return 8 weeks later! It is a little off the beaten track, which was fine with us. The rooms are very cute, with very nice accents. Each room is different and very nicely decorated by the owner. There are always coffee and tea and cookies available in the dining room. The breakfast was very nice. We had french toast with baked pears and sausage. I will definitely stay here again if I need to be in this area.

This quaint bed and breakfast is beautifully furnished and kept immaculate. It is obvious Bobby takes pride in maintaining the house and making his guests feel welcome. Bobby, Paul (Paul runs the Barn, a hiker's hostel which is definitely worth checking out as well), and their dog Marley did everything they could to make my stay wonderful. If you are looking for a place to stay in the North Country, forego the other hotels along Main Street and stop into The Libby House (Libby House probably has better rates too).

During our few days in town, we ate at 3/4 places that John recommended and even attended the Bethel Harvestfest and Chowdah Cookoff. Even though we had a car, we enjoyed walking, so we strolled past Gould Academy which had some nice views. When people say 'looks can be deceiving' this is what they are talking about. I had booked a…read morerafting trip for my friends bachelorette party and were looking for something that could accommodate all 6 of us. My first interaction was via the phone and the owner was very curt. First I wanted to book one night, but she stated "We can do that, but we usually don't." Not wanting to cause difficulties, I contacted the other girls and we all agreed to stay for 2 nights but wouldn't be able to get there until late. Originally we thought we would get there around 8 because the owner said she "goes to bed early." Unfortunately there is no service and we ended up leaving later than expected and didn't get there til 10:30 pm. The sign is not lit up and is very difficult to navigate after the sun goes down. We ended up going down the wrong driveway into her house/ office one- causing her to wake up. She asked us to come sign-in and then directed us to our cabin. The cabin had 2 full size beds and 2 fold-up cots. One cot had multiple stains- dark brown which looked like blood, but who knows (we did not even use this one). We were told to bring our own pillows, blankets and towels- there were some blankets and pillows there but I didn't even want to touch them. There were multiple screens that were broken, letting bugs in when the windows were open. The water smelled of eggs and it was difficult to even shower as the smell was making us gag. The website stated that there was a gas grill and firewood- this was not true. There was no grill and the 2 huge piles of fire were "not for sale, they are for heating the owners house." We had to drive over 20 minutes to Errol, NH to buy firewood. The second night we were there we had a fire in the wood stove, drinking and having a good time- we may have been a little loud but we were not out of control. A guy (not sure exactly what he was- the owners boyfriend, a friend or relative) came storming up to us shouting and cursing- stating that we are being too loud, that we were going to be kicked out and that he was going to call the police. We told him we were sorry and it wouldn't happen again, but his unnecessary behavior went on for 10 minutes. It wasn't until the owner, who was there throughout this guy's meltdown, grabbed his arm and made him leave. We ended up checking out an hour early- having removed all trash, cleaned and put everything back the way it was. These people were so unprofessional as we left he flipped us off. We will not be returning and I would not recommend this place to anyone. We also were only supplied with 2 rolls of toilet paper and ran out within 24 hours.
