Patty & Ron were great hosts and made sure we had everything we needed, while still respecting our privacy as guests. This lodge is a picture postcard of New England, surrounded by beautiful mountains, and only a quick drive to a small park with a waterfall that looks straight out of a vacation video. One drawback is the cold weather. It legit snows here straight through May. But, if you love to snowmobile, ATV and/or dirtbike, this place may have the longest season in the country. One thing that is NOT "picturesque" is the main road that runs right through the center of Colebrook. It is a main highway frequented by 18 wheelers carrying goods across the country. Stephen King's sister lives, or lived, here and I think this might be the road featured in pet Sematary. THE DEAL: if you love the quiet of the mountains, Colebrook is your kind of town, and the Bear Rock Suites is the best place to stay in it. Simply stay off the main highway for video-worthy views!

There are 3 main parts of this property and I will review them as such…read more First is the motel. The rooms have all the basics and are comfortable with two beds. Wood paneling, dated but functional décor. I liked having a microwave, mini fridge, and the sheets and towels were clean. However, there was an extremely strong mildew smell in the room. Our travel mates in the room next door had it too and you could even smell it outside if the wind below just right. The carpet felt damp and one room had a window that could not be closed all the way. No A/C, but the fan provided was adequate. Easy parking out front or in back, and room for trailers. Second is the store. Priced fairly, well stocked, has all the essentials you'd need without going into town. Great place to stop while on the sled of ATV. Lastly is the restaurant. It is small and busy so get there early. The food was excellent, large portions and an overall good value. The service was efficient, food came in a reasonable time, the cook and waitstaff made extra effort to make it special for the kids in our group. The rooms at the country club were only a few bucks more, but were booked. I'll give them a shot next time due to the mildew rooms here.

Along with the lodge/cabin/rental properties on Back Lake, they also have an outrageously good restaurant on site that goes by the name 'The Rainbow Grille'. A recent stay at a lodge/cabin business in Belgrade Lakes region of Maine made me realize what a great value and well run facility Tall Timber is. From the time you pull into the parking area, the well cared for grounds show that they care about the details. The staff is always pleasant and welcome you as one of the family especially when returning year after year. We've always stayed in one of their pet-friendly lakeside cabins in the summer months. The cabins are well cared for and always in good repair. They are well furnished with well-appointed kitchens with cookware & dining ware. Cable TV and internet access is available in the cabin as well. There is no AC but have never had the need for anything more than the provided fans. We always bring our boat with us. They have a public launch on the lake as well as a launch right at the lodge. The docks do not have dedicated shore power but can accommodate plugging in to charge batteries. They also have a small fleet of rental boats as well as a rental pontoon. Pub-style Take-out food is also available from the onsite bar-grille. If you are looking for a relaxing back woods vacation that has all the comforts you need and none that you don't, you need to check this place out. The view of Umbagog lake and the surrounding woods is very beautiful and an enjoyable sight to look at, especially if you're walking around the spacious property. I've been coming here for a few years now, and everytime has been great. Also, the owners have a very friendly and adorable cat who often greets visitors. Mr. Cat is a very good guide and has always made my family and I feel welcome.

I had booked a…read morerafting trip for my friends bachelorette party and were looking for something that could accommodate all 6 of us. My first interaction was via the phone and the owner was very curt. First I wanted to book one night, but she stated "We can do that, but we usually don't." Not wanting to cause difficulties, I contacted the other girls and we all agreed to stay for 2 nights but wouldn't be able to get there until late. Originally we thought we would get there around 8 because the owner said she "goes to bed early." Unfortunately there is no service and we ended up leaving later than expected and didn't get there til 10:30 pm. The sign is not lit up and is very difficult to navigate after the sun goes down. We ended up going down the wrong driveway into her house/ office one- causing her to wake up. She asked us to come sign-in and then directed us to our cabin. The cabin had 2 full size beds and 2 fold-up cots. One cot had multiple stains- dark brown which looked like blood, but who knows (we did not even use this one). We were told to bring our own pillows, blankets and towels- there were some blankets and pillows there but I didn't even want to touch them. There were multiple screens that were broken, letting bugs in when the windows were open. The water smelled of eggs and it was difficult to even shower as the smell was making us gag. The website stated that there was a gas grill and firewood- this was not true. There was no grill and the 2 huge piles of fire were "not for sale, they are for heating the owners house." We had to drive over 20 minutes to Errol, NH to buy firewood. The second night we were there we had a fire in the wood stove, drinking and having a good time- we may have been a little loud but we were not out of control. A guy (not sure exactly what he was- the owners boyfriend, a friend or relative) came storming up to us shouting and cursing- stating that we are being too loud, that we were going to be kicked out and that he was going to call the police. We told him we were sorry and it wouldn't happen again, but his unnecessary behavior went on for 10 minutes. It wasn't until the owner, who was there throughout this guy's meltdown, grabbed his arm and made him leave. We ended up checking out an hour early- having removed all trash, cleaned and put everything back the way it was. These people were so unprofessional as we left he flipped us off. We will not be returning and I would not recommend this place to anyone. We also were only supplied with 2 rolls of toilet paper and ran out within 24 hours.
