The selection here had me delusional for a minute and I forgot that I live on a budget. I definitely went overboard with my initial vinyl choices, but the guy working there was very understanding (which makes sense since he's a cog in the machine that casted the voodoo spell on me in the first place). He had such a positive vibe and was incredibly friendly and was just like, "You can put anything you don't want to buy in this pile and I'll put everything back." He also asked if I wanted him to tally up my selections before he actually rang them up, but I declined and decided to trust my erratic arithmetic skills and go all in (either I'm a mathematical genius or I do math at a 1st grade level, no in between). He even so kindly offered to get the door for me as I was leaving. All in all, I took a quick photo of my reject pile, so I will return to rescue those wishlist items ASAP. Jay's store is my favorite for maintaining the decent to good selection of used records (always), and offering competitively priced new records compared to anywhere you might find them. I've been going to Deep Groove for years, around the time the store opened in the Fan. What bothers me is the erratic and recently rude service I've been getting lately. Also, despite being very anti-Covid with his polices, Jay said nothing recently to a guy who was in there without a mask on. My experiences at Plan 9 and Records and Relics have been better. If you're in the market for Records - new or used - this is a must stop place in Richmond. Heck, if you're in the area, you should stop by and just browse a bit. There really is nothing more soothing than listening to classic rock on an record - and believe me, the owner plays vinyl. It's not a massive store, but rather a wonderfully curated collection. The new selection is impressive and the used collection, a bit picked over from the holidays, featured some really good prices (as low as 3 bucks). The stock looked to be in great shape. I had a great conversation with the owner - who looked pained when he realized it was my first time there, right after his stock had been decimated by Christmas shoppers. Fab little local record nook. Popped in with a friend to browse, looking for nothing in particular, and ended up with a wonderful WOO record in great condition from the used dollar bin so I'm sure love this spot forever. Impressive stock of new stuff and reissues, I like the separate section for Numero Group, and love that Folk/Country is simply filed under "Americana". The proprietor seems real nice too. Deep Groove is the kind of record store that makes me really happy I decided to get into collecting records. The store has a great selection. It's clean, well-organized, and they have the friendliest staff I've ever had the good fortune to encounter. Jay is incredibly knowledgeable, and you can tell he has a real passion for vinyl and music in general. When I started collecting, I was really glad to have found Deep Groove, since they made starting out much less intimidating. Shopping at Deep Groove is always a pleasure, and I try to get over there as often as I can. I'm leaving Richmond in a few months, and I'm going to miss this place a lot. read more

Jay, Tracy and Chris are all extremely personable and helpful. They really go out of their way to make the customer feel special. The store itself is small, lending to a very intimate shopping experience. No dusty bins on the floor to flip through, saves on the knees! New vinyl, mixed with newly arrived used vinyl on one wall, and a wall for the 5 dollar and under. Unlike most record stores, the vinyl gets marked down as time goes by. If you see a premium record and you can't afford it that day - it might be there again the next time you visit. Thanks Deep Groove for hours of flipping. read more

These guys are SO nice! I'm getting rid of a lot of records so I took a box of about 80 here to see if they wanted any. After a crap experience with Plan 9 I didn't expect much but they bought a little over half of them! I had to leave the box overnight so that Jay could take a good look at them but they called me promptly after that and offered a price. They weren't super pissed when I kept forgetting to come pick the rejects up for a week. They didn't do what a lot of record/book stores do what I consider a sneaky bit of social engineering. A lot of stores will pull the records that they want and then set them behind the counter, away from the stuff you brought that they don't want. That way if they offer a crap price it's harder for you to ask for your stuff back. Your stuff is all the way over there in the Behind the Counter Zone and mentally it's already gone. Deep Groove simply separates your stuff into two piles, right next to each other. I appreciate that and I appreciate that they offer a fair price, no lowballing to see if they can pull one over if you don't make a counter-offer. The bins are well stocked with a good variety and they offered to "keep an eye out" for a record they didn't have. I'd definitely say this is the place to go for friendly, knowledgeable, fair service and especially the place to go if you're looking for something rare or unusual. I've spent the past week bouncing all over record stores in Richmond trying to find a few rare records and this is the first place that not only had a couple, but also said they would help find the others. One place (not Deep Groove) went as far as to say they don't make it on vinyl just to avoid helping. Anyways Jay stepped right up with a warm welcome and great shop and offered to help me out. The shop is small but neatly organized and clean. It also isn't filled with ramble shamble junk that just takes up space and makes the searching longer and harder. As a record fiend, one of the best parts about visiting a new city is hitting up their record shops. I came here on a lazy Sunday to check out some 45s. The shopkeep is quite friendly, said hi to everyone in the joint and was generally pretty helpful. I'm huge on garage 45s and sure enough, they were playing a badass garage compilation in-store. The shop guy didn't have any original 45s from bands on the comp but did have a re-issue LP on-hand from one of the bands. Dude knows his stuff! Vinyl here isn't crazy expensive but for slightly rarer 45s, their prices jump up a bit. For more common records and re-issues, prices seem to be on-par with what you'd get elsewhere. Overall, a lovely little record shop in RVA. Definitely will be coming back next time I'm in town! read more

Such a charming record shop! It's pretty small with not too large of a stock, but it's really cute inside. I love the decor - especially the display window. It's also quite tidy, which most record stores tend not to be. The counter is decorated with tons of old concert tickets from Prince to Pixies. I asked the owner if he had been to all of those shows and he replied "yep, that's the perks of being an old man." Will definitely be returning! read more

When you leave a city for a time being, you generally reflect back on the places of interest from time to time. Deep Groove would be one of those places, if I didn't happen to think about it almost every day. It truly is a one of a kind discovery for every record collector and fan. Both Jay and Tracy greet you immediately with a cheery disposition and a subscriptions worth of information on just about every genre and artist you can throw at them. They are the golden gods of the contemporary, smokey back store haven we have come to love for its dusty bins and hip new presses. The best thing about Deep Groove is the fact that nothing stays dusty for long with how quick every LP comes and goes, and the only thing smokey about the place is the jackets of those flipping through each record. A warning to those making their first purchase from either Jay or Tracy; you'll soon find your wall space filling up faster than you can flip side A to B. read more

Let's be honest. Plan 9's vinyl selection has been slipping over the past years. It used to be the only place that I bought records, and truth be told, most of my collection has been formed by digging through the bins in their basement, but slowly, and I am not sure if it's because my tastes have changed or the selection has gotten worse, but I am pretty sure it is a little of both. Maybe vinyl is becoming hip again and it's just severely picked over, but it's gotten to the point where searching through their records which used to be a joyous experience for me, has turned into a disappointing hassle. And when I do find something I want, it is normally overpriced. I found myself resorting to something I never thought I would do, buying records over the internet or saving money up to purchase records at other record stores when making trips to different towns. Now I know this sounds like a review of Plan 9, but I swear it isn't. Right when things got the worse for me, Deep Groove opened! It's a small store with a small selection but low and behold they have amazing record finds. I have gone from having the passion removed from one of my favorite hobbies to having it renewed again by Deep Groove. They have a nice varied selection, and it makes me go yay! I've shopped at this place for a good while, and every time I do the employees are less than to be desired. They need some customer service training, especially being in a city that is known for its' music and its' record shops. Today was the last straw. I call to make sure they had a certain vinyl before I drove all the way up there. The guy picks up the phone in a angry demeanor and before I can even get 5 seconds into asking for what I was calling for, he tells me to "spit it out, spit it out" in such a condescending tone. I've been a resident for much longer than they have been around, so given all my past problems and now this, I will never be visiting this record store ever again. I'll take my business to Vinyl Conflict or Steady Sounds, where they actually care for their customers and their city. read more

This store was pretty instrumental in starting my vinyl collection. They carry mostly rock and pop records, but I've found quite a few personal gems here over the years. Their prices are quite fair and probably the lowest out of the record stores in the Richmond area. Jay and the rest of his staff are always courteous and helpful to customers and are usually always willing to help you find something you're looking for or offer up similar suggestions. The store is much smaller than the record stores in the area, but don't mistake its size for lack of variety. While I said they do tend to focus mostly on pop and rock, they have a fairly sizable selection of jazz, hip hop, reggae, folk and world records, too. They also get a fair share of novelty, hard to find and limited press records as well. Though I don't visit as much as I used to (because I moved from the Fan to Manchester), I always try and stop in on weekends or whenever I have some extra cash. Deep Groove is Richmond's newest record store, a small but excellent all vinyl shop that boasts quality over quantity. It doesn't take long to scan their collection but there's always plenty of cool stuff, very fairly priced. Even the dollar bin regularly boasts good finds in good condition, not the usual thrashed 'n' trashed junk you have to dig through to find the occasional jem. This place is pretty awesome :-) Its small in nature compared to Plan 9 BUT offers a more intimate setting. During a great sale, you can rummage through old records for 25¢. The owner definitely keeps me coming back as well. He sometimes takes from his own collection to supply the store...so he offers first hand accounts of the records you may be interested in.
