Came here for a special showing of The Polar Express. This theater is definitely very old school and the lobby is cute and welcoming. There is a small little snack area and they provided us with some complimentary popcorn as part of the screening. The popcorn was very tasty and was fresh. The employee working there was also friendly. The seats themselves were definitely on the older side and weren't nearly as plushy as the ones at more modern theaters, but were still fairly comfortable regardless. The screen itself was easy to see and the picture quality and sound quality were great. Parking was very easy in the free lot across the street. read more

We had a theater like this when I was growing up -- back in the day. They have two screens, a concessions stand, and lounges (what restrooms were once called). When we were there, the theatre was showing "Jane Austen Wrecked My Life," a film in French with subtitles, and Lilly, based on the life of Lilly Ledbetter. The coming attractions were artful films as well. While not stadium seating, the seats were comfortable and the pitch of the theater offered good viewing. The staff are courteous and kind. Parking is easy on the street or in the nearby parking lots. read more

If you like seeing an interesting movie in an historic building, surrounded by vestiges of the past from its various eras, support local business and drink beer while you're doing that. This is your spot to go. There are a lot of things to like about Dedham Community Theatre, but if you are the type to be upset when a thing hasn't been updated, it might not be for you. I wish my neighborhood had a neat little theater like this. They choose a great line up of films for their two screens. Interesting films I wouldn't have otherwise heard of sometimes. In addition to beer they have your classic popcorn, soda, and all the regular theater snackies. They have some tables so you can sit and have a snack if you got there too early to go in. Have been meaning to check this out for a long time, and loved the experience. While it's true that it could use a renovation, it is a serviceable and fun space now for people who see it's value. (and I will almost always choose something old over something new.) read more

It's nice to see reviewers with a fondness for a local, privately owned business. But writing inaccurate, sentimental reviews that suck in customers isn't kind; it perpetuates disillusion and delays real improvement and opportunity. I came here for the first time to treat my in-laws to the movie Thelma. The movie was cute but the theatre is beat up, outdated and most like watching a movie in a tunnel. It's obviously a place that was a regal destination in it's heyday, last century, now chopped in half by a wall with a sound system that's like a crystal radio, picture resolution that's like an old rear projection television, and a snack bar that's just plain filthy. The popcorn popper looks like it hasn't been cleaned since Dedham was settled in 1635. Frankly there's no way to simply renovate this place to become a reasonable competitor to contemporary, commercial chain cinemas. It needs to be sold, gutted and restored to a single screen or stage performance space. In the meantime, I don't recommend coming here if the film you want to see is available at another theater or even on an old betamax or laserdisc. read more

It's a great hidden gem run by a wonderful local who's always ready to give you the best personal insights on the movies or what's coming next. Such a great place. Modern, ergonomic seating. No funky mold smells like some other "community theatres" (beginning with the letters "West Newton"), overall friendly, relaxed vibe, fair pricing. The Dedham Community Theatre is not a place I frequent. I've been here twice in my life, but it's always a pleasant experience. It could definitely use some extreme renovations and updating of furniture, but in terms of functionality and amenities, it has everything any old cinema does. And more than any general "town center" type of theatre. There are only two theatre's throughout the complex and they typically play either the most popular or complete throwback's (in terms of movies). Much smaller than any of the other cinema's in the area (possibly since this is one of the last independent, local ones). Staff are friendly, kind and the food / popcorn area isn't outrageously priced (think of Showcase!). They typically have good showings and continue to maintain their building with pride of a classic interior (older look). They also have a art gallery in the basement which is an added feature. It's not the best by any means, and the seats aren't nearly up to my standards in terms of comfortability, but it has a quaint neighborhood atmosphere the benefit of having throwback movies every now and again. 3 stars. This is a neat little ancient theatre in the center of Dedham. Pretty darn good: Real butter for their popcorn, beer and wine, an old school set up and plenty of seating. Not so great: small screen, mixed feelings on the audio, lots of older folk, no where to park. We were really impressed when my mother left her purse and not only did they call her but when I went to pick it up all of her money was still in her wallet. I know their set-up isn't ideal (after all, it is one theater divided into 2 rooms and Mama Mia! couldn't seem to be contained on its side one time I went), but going there is a movie experience. I'm mildly obsessed. First off, prices are reasonable. Second, they have a fancy new marquee. Third, you can have beer or wine while you enjoy the film. Reminds me of the movie theater where I grew up; the days when a movie was .35 cents except for Disney movies which were .50 cents. Parking: Since Dedham put in meters there is plenty of parking. Cost is minimal; bring 4 quarters and you are in business. Seating: I found the seating super comfortable but as someone who travels a great deal anything is better than an airline seat. There are a number of fantastic reasons to head to Dedham to see a movie in this renovated (read split in half) old theater: 1) They sell beer. Having beer with your popcorn at the movie is awesome. 2) They are an independent theater. No horrible pre-show ads like at chain places. Only a slide show of ads--much less irritating. Plus supporting this type of place is a must. 3 (and most important). It's the home of the Museum of Bad Art. Venture downstairs and see an amazing collection of weird, scary, funny, awesome art with accompanying snarky comments. But keep some things in mind: The sound isn't great. I think it comes from behind the screen only and is not surround. The main theater has been split into 2 equal size theaters, so the screen is a little small and oddly positioned. Overall this place is worth visiting (and driving to from Boston if that's your situation). It's part of a dying breed that we need to save from extinction. read more

I felt like I was brought back to the 1930's - and I love that!!! They only have two theatres but you are bound to be interested in one of the two. The theatres are very old fashion but the seats are surprising comfortable and the prices are good. They also house the Museum of Bad Art which adds another level of fun to the theatre and gives you something to do while you wait for your show to start. The employees are really nice and attentive. It amazed me that so few employees could really cater to everyone. They also show movie trivia before the movies!!! I like this theater for several reasons. One is there willingness to show repertory cinema offerings and be flexible about the scheduling, i.e. if there is huge popular acclaim, keep the movie on a little longer, as they did with The King's Speech last year. Easy parking and affordable tickets ($9.) and cheap fresh coffee. Friendly staff. The guy taking tickets was a medic in Iraq before working here. Very cool Bad Art Gallery. read more

I can't say enough good things about this theater! Sure it may be small, and not have the sound quality of bigger theaters, but I honestly could care less. I come to this theater for the quality of movies they show - independent, lesser-known films that always seem to make me think after I leave. The building itself is old but I think adds to the ambiance of the theater. They have REAL butter for their popcorn and beer and wine is served. I also patronize this theater because it's theaters like these that must be supported! They provide quality films and seem to truly care about the movie-going experience. BONUS: The Museum of Bad Art is located in the basement. I have been to the Dedham Community Theatre twice. The 1st time I saw Little Miss Sunshine. Most recently I saw Please Give. Both experiences were fun & refreshing. If you're in the mood to go to the movies but you aren't interested in a National Corporate atmosphere, risking getting your film interrupted by cell phones or preteens kicking your chair, then head to the Dedham Community Theatre. The atmosphere is very relaxing. Tickets were affordable. It honestly just felt good to support a local independent theatre. The fact that they sell beer & wine is a definite plus! The smallish screen was offputting initially until I reminded myself that I had gone out of my way for a different experience! Great place to see independent films that you'd most likely have to wait to check out on Netflix. I'll definitely go back! read more

Cute little community theater. It reminds me a bit of the Coolidge Corner Theater in its location because there are several nice cafes and restaurants near by. My friend and I -- having never been here-- were anxious about getting a seat so we went and bought our tickets two hours before the movie then went and had dinner at nearby Isabella. When we came back, we were surprised to find we were the only people in the theater! A few people did come in after, but it was definitely not crowded. They seem to feature more independent and foreign films, which is great. My only complaint is that the women's bathroom is a bit strange- very pink and circa 1920 fixtures and such. Definitely some great places to enjoy nearby too. Great for a local night out. read more

Being the home of the Museum of Bad Art gets you a lot of points, and art houses always get cut a lot of slack, to boot. However, if it's true, as someone else noted, that this used to be one big theatre cut in two, well, they probably shouldn't have. A smallish screen, off-center is a bit less than ideal, and doesn't do good movies justice. Don't get me wrong, i like it, i'd go here again, and these kinds of places need to be supported, but it's hard not to think it might have been better. read more

The moment you walk under the vintage marquee, you will step back in time to a simpler time where theaters were more focused on the art form on the screen (or stage) and less focused on getting you to buy their overpriced concessions. The theater's charm and elegance has been preserved along with all of the original light fixtures, crown molding, and structure. I love theaters like this because they show independent movies that would otherwise not be seen in a cinemaplex. The acoustics are great. For adults, I'm sure this is terrific but it's not a community theater in the true sense at all. A recently changed policy created a HUGE disappointment for our daughter who wanted to have her birthday party hosted at the theater as many of her classmates already have with a great experience, lots of fun and without ANY issues. Now they only will allow parties for kids 11 and older. When asked, it was due to "kids running around". Is this policy really the best way to approach that? Require adults in a certain ratio. Set rules. Collect a refundable deposit. But shut your doors? Not a service mindset. What's so magic about 11? I'm not sure either. Clearly business will be lost. Ours is. read more

It's always a treat to go to the movies. Most people don't think to go to the smaller theatres. I love going to my local theatre just down the street from me. The DEDHAM COMMUNITY THEATRE is my favorite theatre. The films are always the best. They spend time thinking of their customers when choosing a film. Not only are the movies good but they have THE BEST POPCORN. All natural and with real butter. They serve wine and beer. And of course your favorite snacks and sodas. The theatre is clean and so are the bathrooms. The environment is comfortable and all staff are there to make your visit a great one! The location is the best part. The Dedham Community Theatre is located in the center of Dedham square. It's just off of Route 1, Dedham. There are lots of shops and many shops there. The films here are awesome. The condition of the place is always a question. The climate control is never what it should be. A bit Cold in the winter. A bit Hot and muggy last night. And the prices are less than the showcase down the street but not by much given the comparative conditions. And with that said the film selection is great and more people should go see these movies. read more

I love this place! You can buy alcohol at the concession stand, there are far fewer morons talking during the movie than most places, and the atmosphere is just cooler than other theatres. The only problem is that with 2 screens, there will be times that you're just not interested in either film. Still, if they're playing a movie you want to see, there's no theatre in Boston to beat this one. read more

The employees are nice, and they play some movies you might not be able to catch in mega theaters. But the most fun part is playing "How did that stain get way up THERE?" Seriously, there may be some large spots on the walls, and it may get cold in the winter, but this place has lots of personality and there is never a wait. I love art houses and community movie theaters, and the one they have in Dedham is a good one. It's probably not my favorite, however, as it has a slightly worn out feeling seems more old than historic. But the movies they show there are often good ones, the clientele is generally mellow and laid back, and the seats are fairly comfortable. Definitely a good place to go if you like movie theaters with a neighborhood feel to them. read more
