My two large decks had been previously treated by a reputable contractor. I assumed the work they had done (2 times) was top-notch and the "standard of care" despite the fact that, with the sun exposure and weathering, the surface of the deck really didn't look that great after some time, I contacted Jose at Deck Preservation. He was responsive and when he examined the decks was able to show me what my decks could look like underneath all of the goop that the other contractor had applied. Jose was very flexible in scheduling and able to work around some logistical issues regarding access to the decks. He stripped and sanded the decks and rails. I had a fairly large pergola removal job, however after speaking to Jose on the phone he informed me that I was outside of his service area. Still, he spent at least 10 min. on the phone giving me advice about the project and also trying to determine if the wood can be preserved or needed to be demolished. He offered to assess the wood based on pictures. I sent him photos and he responded promptly and told me that it does look like termite rot after all and I should not spend money to preserve the wood but rather take it down. Unfortunately I had not maintained my redwood deck and fence, and by the time Jose came to meet with me - I thought no one could restore the beauty the fence and deck had lost. Boy was I wrong! It had 3 different colors of stain (long story) and hadn't been up kept much in the last couple of years. They made it look better than new. Truly. We improved upon the original design, including concealing a sunshade seam, replacing harmful particle board that had been used to hold the sunshade in place with a more effective technique, drilling conspicuous holes in the deck to allow for drip systems, and more. The work itself is beautiful. It's clear that he not only uses quality products, but is very knowledgeable and can be trusted as a project adviser. My large 15 year old redwood deck was overdue for restaining. I started to strip it myself, then realized the job was way too big for me. I got four different bids for the job, including one from Jose at Deck Preservation. Jose was not only concerned about the stain, but about the way the deck felt when you walked on it or touched the railings. Some the deck flooring was spongy, and it turned out that some of the wood underneath the floor boards was rotten and crumbled in our hands. There were problems with the floor boards as well; many were cracking and splitting at the ends. Some creature (raccoon?) had been sharpening its teeth on the ends of the hand rails. Jose replaced the rotten wood, figured out a clever way to reuse most of the existing boards but get rid of the splitting ends. He also reset the deck screws, sanded down the railings, and more. Finally he stripped, brightened, and stained the deck. He takes a lot of pride in his work, and it shows. His bid was in the middle of the pack, despite the fact that no one else considered doing repairs as well as staining. On top of all that, he was easy to work with and always responded promptly. Jose just finished our deck and fence and I can't say enough good things about his work. Jose cares about a job well done and truly enjoys the work. From the very first meeting, Jose was thorough and detailed. Some of the others who came out to quote were asking us whether we wanted oil or water-based stain. Jose instead tested our deck, showed us that the previous coat was water-based and described why that meant future work had to all be water-based. He showed us a bunch of samples for colors and walked us through the whole process. His pricing was reasonable--not the lowest but not the highest either. Given the scope of our project, I feel we got a very fair deal. He showed up promptly on each working day and worked very hard each day. The sanding and prep work he did on our deck exceed our expectations in every way. We can walk barefoot now on the deck and it's incredibly smooth. It took a few different tries to get a color that was a close match to what we were looking for. We were willing to settle for something pretty close, but Jose could tell that we really wanted it a shade darker so he took another trip, custom mixed another color and did another sample area just to ensure we would be happy with the final product. It came out beautifully because of his extra patience and not rushing the work. In every way, Jose is an expert craftsman and a professional. Jose was absolutely great. He refinished our deck and front staircase. When he first came to quote the job, he cleaned up the wood to see what he was dealing with before quoting (the previous contractor did no such thing). When it came to doing the work, he and his team had to move through our house (no other access to the deck) and kept everything very clean and professional. The work itself was very good -- excellent -- it's as if we have brand new stairs and deck. There were some spots on the steps that needed to be touched up because we covered it with paper in order to walk the steps, and he came back a couple days later and took care of it completely. Would definitely work with Jose again. P.S. When he came back to do the touch up work, he even cleaned up a bunch of trash that had fallen down our hill after the heavy winds from the evening before. Makes me sad to write this, because Jose does good work. He's repaired and stained my deck twice. The first job was the biggest. Second time, it was hard to get him out here. I guess the job was too small. He eventually did the repair, and I appreciated it, because like I said I love his work. And he did it without charging extra for the added time. And what a fantastic job he did. He likes the job to be done well and that's what happened. He is a one-man crew. When I first made inquiry, he responded in a prompt manner, and after I hired him to do the work, he scheduled the job two weeks into the future and showed up when he promised. About 6 years ago, I refinished the deck myself, and I know how much work is involved, requiring extensive and time-consuming sanding. Jose was very careful to clean up the job site after each day. He offered advice on the best product to apply to my deck, and is most knowledgeable about all aspects of painting and staining. He recently cleaned, sanded, and stained/weatherproofed the three-level deck at my Oakland home which includes lattice, a privacy wall and built-in benches. It looks absolutely amazing! With no complaints or questions (and no additional charge), he returned to resand and refinish the tops of the benches when some previously-made marks resurfaced (maybe done by some chemicals someone once used to try to remove/clean the benches years ago--nothing that was Jose's fault). He made sure I saw what his process was and showed me that even after the deeper resanding, the marks would likely still be visible. He really wanted me to be happy with the finished product. And guess what? After he applied the stain and it dried, there was only one little area where the marks still showed! I am so happy! It all looks fantastic! My deck was in need of some nice painting. I called Jose and set up a time he could come by for an estimate. He came by, checked out the wood, and while doing so he explained what he was looking for and what kind of work he recommends for the deck. He was very detailed and knowledgeable. After he left, I reached out to a few more companies to see what they recommend and their estimates. After all of that, Jose seemed to be the most helpful as well as the most affordable. I decided to go with him and he started working on it as soon as he could. He went above and beyond to make everything work out good. We didn't have electricity going outside so he helped us plug an extension cord to go to the outside, but in the process a piece of wood from our window frame came out (it was put on very cheaply before) Jose offered to even help with that and get us a new durable piece of wood! He didn't need to even worry about that, but he wanted to help us out and it just shows how genuinely nice this guy is. The deck is now complete and I love it!
