JJ mixed our last album, recorded DIY, and made it sound amazing! He has an incredible ear for crafting a song. He took a bunch of lo-fi recordings and transformed them into amazingly high quality songs without losing the essence or spirit of how they were originally recorded. We were so impressed with his hear for how to build a song, especially his ability to create space for new things, that we decided to record our new record at Decibelle. Seeing his amazing studio, collection of vintage instruments and amplifiers during the mixing process also helped nudge us in that direction.
Given our complete satisfaction with his mixing of our last album, our expectations were high this winter when we recorded our new album. JJ and assistant Drew were phenoms. They created a fun, yet professional atmosphere that helped bring out the best in our playing and our sound. JJ in particular was helpful in making gentle suggestions about how to make our songs sound tighter, more unique. His strength is really at recommending how to add and take away things, and that has really changed the way I think about writing songs. When given the opportunity to build these songs from the ground up, he was able to take songs to new and beautiful places.
Sonically, the album is also superb thanks in large part to the arsenal of equipment JJ has. We used his harp, piano, vintage guitars, amps, etc. We are especially happy about how gorgeous the drums sound. But he didn't just dial in the right sound for us as a band and leave it there. Each song was given its just desserts, so drums, guitars, etc. have a unique sound on each song. But this is done tastefully--retaining the core of the band's sound across songs. He is also a whiz on pro-tools, which really helped us make the best use of our time. We basically recorded the entire thing in five days.
Even with our sky-high expectations, he and Drew topped them. Recording and mixing an album is a huge investment, but these guys are worth every penny. read more
