We brought our vehicle here for a tire rotation and they got grease all over the interior. When confronting the owner, he got hostile and refused to offer any sort of remedy. I would not recommend this business to anybody. read more

Good place to fix a car. Fast, affordable, friendly people.

So, my husband and I needed to ship a car from Anchorage, Alaska to Dallas, Texas for a military relocation. Our shippers refused to ship our car because the emergency brake was not tight enough. We rushed our car over to this place for a same day repair. Then immediately shipped our car to Dallas. We did notice some squeaking but needed to ship right away. Two weeks later we reunited with our vehicle in Dallas, only to find that squeaking noise once again and it squeaked all of the time whether braking or not. Unable to drive the car to our final destination in Fort Hood, nearly 3 hours away, we stopped at a local Nissan dealership (The best in the district) and had it repaired. It turns out, instead of repairing the emergency break, Deans Automotive took a nail and screwed it into the brake line in position to appear as if it was tightening the emergency brake. A cheap quick fix on my expensive Nissan Armada. I guess they figured since we were flying out that night, by the time we realized it, we would be in a new state. It cost us $450 to repair. It's unfortunate that many military members are referred to this company for repairs in order to ship their vehicle. I would advise you find another company to go to if you are Military. I would strongly recommend anyone and everyone to take their vehicle to Dean's Automotive for repair. I feel like the rates are competitive, the service is great, and the repair is done quickly and accurately. Being a female with less than average knowledge about the mechanically functioning thing-mo-bobs in my car...I feel that I'm easy prey for unscrupulous mechanics. I've definitely encountered this issue elsewhere in Anchorage before (a different mechanic tried to charge me $275 for a battery changeout!!). But, I feel as though Dean's is an honest place for anyone to take their car. Dean asks multiple questions on the issues I'm having, calls with possible fixes, gives accurate quotes on how much each option costs, and doesn't inflate the labor time (based on time estimates found online as well as the traditional call to my mechanic Dad in the lower 48). My car is rather advanced in age AND in problems, as I've been trying to limp it along for the last two years. So, when I'm threatened with a walk to work...I take it in to Dean. This last time the issue wasn't clear cut, but he thought it sounded like my problem was with the oxygen sensor. Dean called and asked me if he could try to replace it, they'd test it and if it didn't fix the problem, he'd put the old one back in and not charge me for the new part. Turns out the oxygen sensor did fix the problem---and the cost came in about $50 less than quoted. So---male or female, mechanical or mechanawhat....I think that everyone would be impressed with the service at Deans. read more

I brought my late 90's Chevrolet Astro to Dean for a much-needed tune-up, and also asked him to take a look at an issue I was having with the climate control system. The local GM dealer wanted a $500 deposit just to look at it, which was ridiculous, especially since I already had an idea of what was probably wrong. Dean listened to me explain the problem and told me his guys would try and fix it. The shop worked promptly and got me back on the road within a reasonable time, but the repair to the climate control system (there were some dry-rotted vacuum lines in the engine compartment) soon failed, because additional hoses needed replacement. Dean told me to bring the vehicle back and his guys replaced the additional hoses free of charge. Now, my vehicle runs like new. Dean's price for all the work was reasonable and comparable to what other local shops seem to charge. I also appreciated that he called me with a DETAILED estimate prior to starting work, and took time to answer my questions about the things that needed to be done. I am so glad that I found Dean's. This is a model of what a business is supposed to look like. Dean has had the place for something like 35 years and he still works at the front desk. He charges a competitive rate and doesn't try to take advantage of the customers. A few weeks ago I had a flat tire and took it the car to a local tire place. When I picked up the car I was told that my rear break drums needed to be replaced for $420. Not what I was expecting to hear. I was telling a coworker about this when she recommended that I take my car to Dean to get a second opinion. I dropped off the car one morning and about an hour later I got a call back that my break drums would outlast my car (it is quite old) and the break pads would last me through at least the winter before they would need to be replaced. He charged me for a half an hour of labor, which I happily paid since it was only 10% of what I was expecting to pay. I just took my car in again (like I said it is old) since it was having battery problems. Dean gave me a discount on the parts that I needed! Needless to say I am a customer for life. read more

Very impressed, a local shop had quoted me $140 to replace my door actuators, and I knew it was a fairly easy job so I want to do it myself. However, during the middle of the operation I have trouble putting the door actuators on, because I didn't really know how they fitted on the guides. I spoke with Dean personally on the phone, and he told me to bring my truck on and he would have his mechanics check it out. I bought my truck in, and his mechanics put my door actuators in for free. Granted, it didn't take them very long to do, and I offered him money, but he refused to take it. I was very impressed with his honesty, and his willingness to help the customer. Be careful out there, many shops take advantage of you. For instance, a local shop charged my father over $600 to change out an alternator (a Refurbished one even) and replace the serpentine belt on his 2001 Ford F-350 diesel. We later found out, that we could've gotten the alternator at Napa for about $228.00 and it was only $50 for the serpentine belt. The Alternator from Napa was brand-new and in the box, and carried a lifetime warranty. I trust Dean and his shop to not take advantage of the customer like this other shop did! read more

This is the worst place to take vehicle in Anchorage, i brought vehicle to have cv axle replaced and they end up telling me i need a new shock strut and sway bar after telling Dean no he became upset over the phone after agreeing to the repairs i got the vehicle back the next day the car tracks and drives in correct and wants to go to the left or right so i had ford look at vehicle turns out they use a napa shock strut which is not oem they explain its not the oem part and they also change both struts if one goes bad vs just one rather then going back to Deans Automotive im just going to have Ford replace both front shock struts and new alignment. read more

Too many times I've had to return to their shop to do a second or third repair. They haven't charged for not getting it right the first time, but who wants to take time off work so often? And they aren't open on Saturdays. I also wonder about the main guy behind the counter. I'm thinking dementia. He's usually a nice guy (although gets impatient with some customers) but can't seem to remember instructions or conversations. Hope not. He also told me a few years ago that mechanics don't like to see the customers waiting for their vehicles (they did offer rides to work). I always thought that was odd. read more

I will never take my car here, I would give them negative stars. I don't even want to give them 1 star. I dropped my car off first thing in the morning at 8am, first one there. Talked to dean himself I told him I needed my car back by today as I had to pick my sister up at the airport. In all those 10 hours... NOT ONE CALL. Not one update nothing. I had called the guy at the service desk and he was rude. He said I'll call you back here In a little bit about 4 hours go by nothing. So I walked back to deans got there at 5:15 NO ONE IS THERE. And there hours are on the door are 5:30. So basically they closed early took my car and left me stranded with no phone call of anything that's going on. I spent 15$ on uber 82$ on a rental because I needed to get things done. And now I have to wake up and 8am when I should be enjoying my time with my sister. So thank you dean for screwing me 100$ because you don't know customer service. I'll never be going here again! If you want good service go to big os!! read more

I would like to submit a review for Dean's Automotive in Anchorage, Alaska: I had a terrible leak coming from the radiator on my car. Once discovered, I let the car sit for sometime to avoid making the problem worse. When I was confident about managing the time and money for a repair, I took the car to Dean's Automotive in Anchorage. I was treated with a great amount of care and respect and the repairs were performed in a very timely manner with a one day turnaround and a fair cost, no surprises. Shortly after picking the car up, I noticed that they had also washed the car and they had cleaned the engine. I test drove the car that evening and noticed that there was steam coming from the engine compartment. I returned the car back to Dean's the next morning with a note prior to business hours. The technicians at Dean's had the car into the maintenance bay immediately upon opening and I received a follow-up call to let me know that they were already working on the diagnosis and that although the work for the original repair was double and triple checked for quality control and was correct, they had discovered an additional leak that was agreeably more difficult to detect as it wasn't coming from the radiator but a faulty part on the engine block heater, and that the repair was underway. My car was returned to me by noon and now appears to be in good running order. Sometimes problems are difficult to diagnose, but the wonderful staff at Dean's Automotive stuck with it all while maintaining an attitude of care and concern. The sticking with the problem part is the key to my review. It's easy to say that yes you have a problem, yes, it can be fixed. The hard part is when there is a problem that you can't easily fix, but have the good work ethic and professionalism to stick with it until the problem is resolved thoroughly. These are the customers who come back as repeat customers. As for myself, I will certainly return to Dean's to have my vehicles serviced. Thank you to the entire the staff at Dean's.
