We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

Most people dining were locals, which was a refreshing and interesting environment that fascinates me when traveling. The food was absolutely amazing - we had the fish entree and steak entree. The fish entree was honestly one of the best seafood dishes that I've ever had, perfectly cooked and with a great balance of flavors. The bearnaise sauce was insanely good as well. The people working here are so sweet and welcoming, and I think that this restaurant really reflects Haarlem as a whole - effortlessly charming and cozy.

I had a lentil salad starter that was fantastic, a salmon entree that was good - not quite as cooked as I prefer salmon to be, and a creme brulee for dessert, which was off-the-charts fantastic. OFF. THE. CHARTS. CREME. BRULEE!! The wine selection wasn't quite as good as the food, but not bad. Located between Delft and The Hague next to the golf course it is not an easy place to find if you are unfamilure with the area. If so, just hop on the number 1 tram from either Den Haag or Delft. My own expectations were way above exceeded. We were greeted in the reception and shown to our table in the main dinning area. The whole place looked amazing. Great attention to detail with a lot of thought put into the design and layout. For a large area the noise was at a minimum, a rare thing in The Hague. Service was excellent. Then came the food. I could ramble on about this for a long time but I'll try make it brief. We had a set menu of Scallop with variations of apple. Then a main of Beef. The scallops were cooked perfectly but the real star was the beef. Black aberdeen angus in a jus that made me smile and almost cry at the same time. It was a taste sensation that I've rarely encountered. Oh, did I mention that in over 9 years of living here I have never found a place that does British Beef. Wine selection was what you would expect from such high end dinning but we decided to try something different and opted for a Lebanese Red, Chateau Musar 2002. The taste was so different from anything we have ever tried but went perfectly with the beef. It was so good I've just ordered 6 bottles. To sum up, Niven is one of the best places I've ever been, certainly way and above any place else in The Hague area
