Daybreak is the best used/vintage record store in Seattle. I always walk out with something. The records are almost always Near Mint, and priced reasonably. Most importantly, the selection within each genre is always great and almost always an original or early pressing -- and the stock is never stale. This is a fantastic record shop! Great, varied selection AND reasonable prices. We typically browse other record shops, maybe find one interesting one thats $40. I could easily make this review about bashing every other record store in Seattle. Sometimes you say to yourself "I didn't know I wanted this until now" Daybreak has really set a new bar in the record store department. Selection, condition, diversity of genre and ambience this store excels on all fronts. The owner worked at Jive Tome as a buyer for 14 years and the store really reflects that. High quality discs and cassettes all priced appropriately (unlike the dingus at Bop Street!) Staff members really know music and it's so refreshing to visit a shop where the dudes are aware of music other than guitar based rock (looking at you Sonic Boom) They also have a beautiful listening station (Silver Platters Sodo and Zion's gate take note!) which is widely acknowledged as the difference between a good and bad record store. Honestly I'm torn because I want vinyl needs to stay away from my secrecy jazz bin, but honestly I really just want this store to exceed. You'll see what I mean when you walk in. Everyone knows the value of a record thanks to the internets. Back in the day I used to roll into a city, rip out the record store page from the yellow books, and pillage away. Plus, there were tons of mom, and pop joints that catered exclusively to specific genres. Those days are dead my friends. That doesn't mean there aren't any good record stores in the greater Seattle area. Its vinyl culture is healthier than most, and this newer shop is a gem in the Fremont area. I discovered Daybreak while looking through a friend's IG timeline, saw the hull he pulled in, and knew what I was doing that weekend. The shop is a little hike uphill from the main Fremont strip, so if you're visiting the area plan accordingly if you're parking closer to the water. The shop is clean, minimalistic, and has nicely made record binds. Besides the records they have record related accessories like vinyl sleeves, album cover protectors, and the all important dividers. I've been looking online, and in stores for dividers to put my records in alphabetical order. You can't find shit online, unless you want to pay $200 plus for custom made wooden ones. Well, I pleasantly was surprised to find plastic ones for 99 cents apiece, and now my collection isn't living like an animal! They have all the typical genre's which I didn't really look through, because I'm only on the lookout for 80/90's hip-hop OG pressings. While their hip-hop selection is small it had some good pieces. I also liked that they had a singles bin of cheaper records where I found OG 12'' pressings of Cypress Hill's, "I Ain't Going Out Like That," and the Alkaholiks, "Only When I'm Drunk." BTW, when you're drunk is usually when you say the later words...aka when keeping it real goes wrong. The owner was cool, knowledgeable, and pointed me to what I was looking for. Any time I'm in the Fremont area I make it a point to walk up the hill to check out the shop. If you're in the area I recommend you do too. Salute! read more

Genuinely one of my all time favorite record stores. You can tell how much they value what they do by how clean everything is, from the decor to the store to the racks to the vinyl. Too many places these days see a record and decide it's worth top dollar regardless of condition. Not here, if it's ok the racks it's going to be in collectible condition and you'll be pumped when you get it home. I tend to mainly be buying jazz these days and it's amazing how much stuff shows up here! The racks are always rotating and the staff is friendly and knows their stuff. Great place to grab some tunes and then head across the street for coffee or next door for burgers. P.S. don't skip the bargains in the bins on the floor! There are some gems in there! read more

Daybreak opened a few years ago as a promising upstart amidst Seattle proper's already crowded vinyl retail market. Despite the competition and a pandemic that was initially devastating for many sectors of Seattle retail, Daybreak has not only thrived but risen to the top of the heap to become one of the city's best record stores. (Please note that I am a seasoned collector whose devotion to my hobby probably borders on mental illness, so I do speak with some authority here.) Being all things to all music fans in this very musical city is no easy task, but Daybreak repeatedly rises to the challenge--and prevails. Stop into their store on any given day and you'll find their inventory to be chock full of selections ranging from the rarest of rare LPs for the hardcore collector (like myself) to the "meat and potatoes" bargain bin treasures for those just beginning their love affairs with vinyl. All genres are well represented, especially rock and alternative, and skillfully cataloged. The inventory is mostly used, but even the cheap stuff is usually in tip-top shape. Their prices are fair, sometimes lower than average, and all of the staff members are friendly and upstanding folks. (There is no cooler-than-thou record store clerk attitude in this establishment.) Running a good record store in the 2020s is no small feat, but Daybreak Records shows vinyl collectors of all stripes how it's done. read more

Full disclosure, I know the owner but I'm not writing this review you blow smoke up his, or your ass. What I love about this guy opening up his own store is his sheer dedication to music on vinyl and his ability to sell some of the best records in Seattle. With one look in the bins you will notice two things: first is their breadth of knowledge across multiple genres of music from Reggae to Rock to Classical to Jazz and everything else in between. You will see a lot of good titles in any genre you look in, records you are looking for and at fair prices. The second thing is the quality of the records - this is not a hyped up statement but everything in the top bins is truly of impeccable quality. From clean jackets to shiny vinyl, the records I looked at/bought were all top quality. You will find records with a scratch or two, maybe a split seam but that is why there are bargain bins on the bottom of each rack. If you're not looking for top copies there are so many bargains to be had from .49¢ 45s to .99¢ LPs. It's a bit of a trek up the hill on Fremont from the "Center of the Universe" but it's well worth it, even if you are a sweaty mess when you get there. It's across the street it the famed Paseo's. Put your order in, hit up the store to kill some time between the hour or so it takes from placing your order at the window to picking up your order...get a cold drink to cool you down from that long-ass walk and chill in style at Daybreak. ;-) read more

Daybreak Records, what can you really say about them that hasn't already been said? What magic lurks within those doors? I say magic because really, how do they find such wonderful vinyl? Excellently curated selections of well-known popular favorites and obscure alternatives alike! Not to mention their organizational skills are top notch - separate sections for 7" & 12" singles, 80's, 70's, jazz, funk, metal...it's not a place you can just pop into it. Once you're there, you're going to want to explore, and of course, you'll spend some money, but hey, that's ok, cause their prices are reasonable, so maybe you're gonna buy a few things more than you planned on...and trust me, there's lots in there worth buying! I consider myself lucky that one of the best used vinyl stores in the country is in my backyard! read more

Besides collectibles there's always a ton of solid low to moderately priced staple jams and a pretty rad bargain bin. It's a smaller shop but that's an advantage given how well-curated it is. Was traveling up from San Jose and stopped by Jive Time and Daybreak Records and really enjoyed shopping at both stores. Discovered the owner of Daybreak was the record buyer at Jive and just opened his store a few months ago. I have been collecting records for the past year and a half, live in San Jose and have shopped many of the record stores all over Northern California. Would have to say that Daybreak has a very broad selection of key records that everyone needs in their vinyl collection. Everything from Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon to The Clash Sandinista and Combat Rock, many Beatles albums, some John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk, a great Metal and Punk selection and more. All of their records are in great shape and the prices are a bit higher than market price, but considering they are new I would give them a break.
