First time trying the Fractured Prune and it was...underwhelming. I'm not the biggest fan of cake doughnuts and especially ones that fall apart when you pick them up. Plus, the toppings and glazes on their website look much more appealing than the real life versions. They were definitely skimpy with the toppings and even with trying 10 different types of doughnuts, most looked the same. The taste was ok and it's not the worst decision you could make if you're craving doughnuts in the area, but there are better options, in my opinion. We tried the OC Sand, Salted Caramel, Carnival, Blueberry with sprinkles (was more brown/purple not blue at all), Chocolate Chip, Strawberry Shortcake, Cookies and Cream, French Toast, Margarita, and Key Lime Pie. The best of the bunch was the Margarita. It had a nice balance of salty, tangy and sweet. The French Toast, Salted Caramel and OC Sand tasted pretty much the same. I would recommend Wake n Bake or Britt's over these doughnuts, if you're in the area. read more

I am here to confirm the 4.5+ star review. Folks this is not a drill, load up the car and get to Fractured Prune before 8am pronto! I have never had a doughnut quite like these babies and now I'm afraid these will be hard to beat. Now, it wouldn't be right to compare these doughnuts to the big guys. I was so taken by these doughnuts particularly because they are the perfect combination in texture of yeast and cake. They have the melt in your mouth deliciousness of a yeast donut AND the moist, flavorful doughy goodness of a cake donut! You know those mini doughnuts at the fair? They're similar to those but bigger and better. Did you know you can customize your doughnuts and can choose from 155,648 different combinations of glazes and toppings?! Not to mention every doughnut is made to order and is always served hot and fresh. Literally you can watch the donut go from the deep frier to the toppings station and directly into your box. For me, the options are overwhelming so I stuck with donuts on the menu and specials menu. We tried at least 7 different combinations, all to die for. More expensive and much smaller than they used to be. We go here multiple times every year going way back to when they were the Fractured Pune. My kids love the place and the variety of flavors. They raise their prices every year which is fine but now they are noticeable smaller than they used to be. I noticed right away but didn't say anything. One of my kids asked if they were now, "bite sized". Ouch. With the price plus tip now into the mid $20s for a dozen and since they are much smaller they just aren't worth it anymore. Warm, soft and gooey donuts are worth the stop. The favors are great. The icing oozes over the sides. All kinds of toppings seal the deal. This donut place on an island in North Carolina has an awful lot of Baltimore-Washington area memorabilia for some reason, which is fine by me. They offer to fry up a donut and freshly top it for you. You can save by buying a bunch, but you can also save by paying cash, and the single donut I felt like eating wasn't too much. I got their mint chip variety, and found the chips appealingly melting and with sufficient bitterness to make for a robust flavor combination with the messy mint syrup. Let me start by saying, their concept here is good. You go in order how many donuts you would like and then pick your toppings while they are being fried. But.... I got the death by chocolate donut and I was disappointed. It didnt taste like chocolate at all. It tasted like a greasy donut. And for the price you pay per donut it's not worth it in my opinion. A great place if you are vacationing on Topsail Island. Donuts were made fresh and all 4 of us agreed they were great. The service was great and the waitress said one of her favorites was the dutch apple pie which was very good. I don't think you can go wrong with any donut here. Found this sweet spot thanks to Yelp while on vacation. We have visited the area on and off for the last 10 years or so. We are always looking for new spots that have opened up. Since our fave spot, Corner Sweet, closed we needed something to satisfy our sweet tooth. I loved all of the options. They also have some seasonal flavors so don't miss checking those out. Really enjoyed discovering the fractured prune on a day trip to surf city. It's been dishing out donuts since 1976 and has a great origin story for how it got its name (a female athlete named prunella who was injury-prone!). This is a made-to-order Linda place kinda like Duck. You say how many you want and they start frying them while you select whatever glaze/topping combo you desire. My group got the OC sand (honey cinnasug), the raspberry, a lemonade and a choco coconut. When they come fresh and hot out of the fryer they are delicacies. My raspberry glaze was super fresh and tangy. The hours on yelp haven't updated for the high season so even if yelp says they are closed, try anyway! We almost didn't go because yelp said they closed at 1pm but we passed by at 3 and their open sign was up. Turns out they are open til 8! Definitely enjoy these fresh in the store. I don't know how good they would be after they've been allowed to cook and sit. read more

The past couple of summers, our family has spent a week at Surf City in the summer. The first place we went was The Fractured Prune. The only bad thing is a week is not enough time to try everything! They have so many wonderful flavor combinations listed or you can choose your own. They also make them to order so they're nice and hot when you get them. We bought two dozen assorted a couple of times this trip. The bacon bomb is a clear favorite as is salted caramel. We've tried most of them. Walking in the door with those warm boxes will make you the hero. Or you can scarf your doughnut down right there! They also have milk in the drink cooler. The staff is always cheerful and helpful. When we found out they've been around since 1976 and were the first to create this experience in NC , we had to try them and see how they stacked up against Duck Donuts!
