The donuts are a fancier version of old favorites. We got an assortment, including the lemon pie filled, apple bacon topped, buckeye filled, and an Oreo cookie filled. They were all really good. A half dozen was only $18, which is reasonable for the size and quality. They also have a little self serve cappuccino machine and a few bagels. The only downsides are that they don't open until 8 and the line when it opens is very long. But if you don't mind waiting an hour or two, it's easy to get right in. Mixed review here. When we walked in the great smell hit us. Who I assume to be Denis, the owner, was walking around on the phone while stirring something good in a bowl. Lol. He smiled and you could tell he loved his job! The doughnuts... we got there a little late (about 11am) and there was no one else in the store. We ordered a dozen (we chose and boy was it hard... banana cream was awesome, the buttercream was so good and so sweet it was enough to eat half lol. I did not care for the one with fruitloop type cereal on it (just to sweet). My favorite has to be the chocolate coconut! The bad... not the woman at the cash register, but a woman that came from the back, with our doughnuts, dropped them (as opposed to setting them) on the counter and pushed them up and turned to walk away. Both my daughter and I said thank you! Have a great day! She turned around and gave us what could only be described as a look of hate saved for those irritating mosquitos at the beach. Do not go here if you want to just "stop by and pickup some donuts". Buying from this place is a commitment, it can take 1 to 2 hours to get in and out - I'm not kidding. The reason for this is that they only make plain donuts. When you ask for anything else they have to go into the back and glaze the donuts "on-demand", and only certain people are trusted to do the glazing. This bottleneck is why it is so slow. Well it's also slow because they only do one order at a time, there is no system for taking orders and having people wait for their donuts, mostly because there is only one person glazing donuts so they couldn't keep up anyway. The donuts are fine, they aren't that good. They rely on the fact that in the summer the vacationer turnover works to their average. "I'm not coming here ever again." These donuts are enormous! They open at 8am but I suggest getting there by 7:45am at the latest. We got there around then and waited in a line with about a dozen people ahead of us. By the time they opened at 8 there was a massive line behind us too. We ordered a whole sampling of donuts for our group and the fan favorite was definitely the Apple fritter. Awful service, no signs/menu. Coffee is from a machine that you self serve from but you also have someone standing at the machine to "teach" you how to use the machine. Without letting you customize what you want from the machine in the first place. The coffee was god awful, probably the worst coffee I've ever had. I wanted ice coffee and they ration their ice cubes that are made from coffee. They only give you 3 ice cubes for an ice latte and you have to ask for more if you get the chance to talk to anyone. After finally getting the coffee the man working there said that women aren't patient in a super condescending way. We visited Flip Flop this morning for the first time today . This place is one of Americas hidden gems . These are the best bagels I have ever had . The inside is simply amazing so lite and fluffy . Almost the texture of a beignet . The flavor is just as impressive . I am from the birth place of Krispy Kreme . And I use them as a standard when rating doughnuts. Flip Flops doughnuts are in a class of their on . The outer crust is light and krispy and the insides simply melt in your mouth . Try the maple bacon . You will thank me. The best part of our visit was actually meeting the owner Denis Raczkowski. He was so kind making sure we had everything we needed . So many good reviews, we had to try this donut shop on Emerald Isle. Here are my main thoughts: Be patient and ready to wait. There was a long line and the people working there are in no hurry to speed you through. It does give you time to figure out which donuts you want (there's a display case with one of each, which is nice), but once you get through the line and order, you then have to wait just as long for your donuts to be prepared and packaged. If you're not hungry when you arrive, you will be by the time you leave. It took us 30+ minutes to get our six donuts. Donuts are glazed fresh. I liked this a lot, but it does slow down the process. If you order a maple glazed, they grab a plain donut, take it to the back, glaze it, then carry it back to the front to put in your box. Fresh, but time consuming. Good variety. We got the cinnamon sugar cake donut, maple glazed, chocolate covered cream filled (they cut the donut and stuff it full of cream instead of injecting it), strawberry iced (needed more strawberry flavor), original glazed, and chocolate sprinkles. All were tasty. They were sold out of the Apple fritters, which I was disappointed about, but I got one at Carolina Garden where they have Flip Flop donuts at their coffee bar. I don't know if it was old or what, but it didn't taste as good as it looked (it's huge!). Maybe they're better when fresh. No prices. I didn't see a menu board with offerings or prices anywhere. I thought this was a bit odd. Especially since I noticed after waiting for awhile that they had a coffee bar set alongside one wall (people waiting for their donuts were blocking it initially). I would have liked to know what kind of coffee they offered, as well as prices. I heard one customer ask the cashier how much each donut is and she said "two something." The best donuts you ever need are RIGHT HERE!! I've been here twice this month, and they can't ever disappoint. Although the line was long, the workers are full of life and do their work perfectly to accommodate the customers. Their communication between one another is flawless, and they're all so professional!! The cashier is the kindest woman ever, granted a little sassy, but in the best way possible! The inside is so welcoming and inviting, it reminds me of small town mom and pop that I grew up around. The coffee stations are always cleaned, there no flies even though the door is constantly opening and closing, and they even have tables and chairs both indoors and outdoor for those who need seating. There's also a nice interactive spot to the right of the hot coffee bar where you can put a push pin in where you came from! It's all filled up, so I'm waiting desperately for a new map to get put up . Another thing I noticed was the notes of appreciation written to the shop! It was so heartwarming to know that so many people were positively impacted by this shop, it's amazing!! To address the long line, well, it's long for a reason. These donuts are the best, yummiest, fluffiest, softest donuts I think I've ever had. I've seen people lined up here everyday when I drive past, even in the rain, and I understand why. Sadly we just didn't have a great experience. We went on July 5th and they were sold out of everything except glazed. We were so looking forward to our crazy, decadent vacation doughnuts. The ladies were very apologetic but in being a savvy business owner it would have been a good move to let customers know through FB that only glazed would be available that day (we would have waited another day) or expect to be mobbed over a holiday weekend and prepare for that. Were the donuts good? Yes! Was it worth AN HOUR WAIT? Absolutely not. Don't let the line outside the door fool you. Once you get inside the wait is still excruciatingly long. The staff who were filling the donut orders were clearly having an extremely hard time keeping up. It's nice to have a giant variety of donuts, but that's probably most of the problem. They should probably concentrate on having a limited standard menu of donuts with a very limited specialty donut menu that rotates weekly. The people in line were waiting so long that they were ordering more than they came in for because they wanted to make it "worth the wait" because it was taking forever. I suppose it was miscommunication. DH got a Boston cream and a cinnamon cake. he was not fond of the Boston cream but cannot give a definitive explanation of what the issue was. how ever we both agree that the cinnamon cake was absolutely delicio.
