I have to work at the Pembina border crossing on occasion. The first time I did was for a week to…read moreinstall Radiation Portal monitors. We stayed in Grand Forks and the 1 hour commute was somewhat tolerable in the morning going to work, but after an 8-10 hour work day the commute back was brutal. On the next trip up I decided to see where else I could stay. Google maps showed the Red Roost Motel in the small town of Pembina. I called the number and spoke to Lyndi. She was so nice. She told me they were the owner operators and live on the property out front of the Motel rooms. She told me they had recently completed many updates to the Motel. I decided to stay there because I didn't want to have to deal with the 1 hr commute to Grand Forks. She told me more about the little community of Pembina. There is a real nice recently renovated bar and grill called the Bridgestone that are separated by a connecting wall and the Grill area has a covered outdoor seating area that looks out into a wooded park. There is a small grocery store caddy corner from the Red Roost that has pretty much anything you would want. Across the street there is Trails End a small but well stocked hardware store. They also rent and can deliver a scissor lift if needed. I stayed a few days at the Red Roost and I enjoyed it very much. The room was fresh and the bathroom was recently retiled and nicely appointed. The towels and linens fresh and comfortable. They have a mini fridge and microwave and an Internet TV you can watch your own shows on if you like. I also recently made another trip up to Pembina for an update the our border crossing equipment. I stayed at the Red Roost again and Lyndi was excited to show me they now had a mini apartment on the property. It has a well appointed kitchen and a good sized Full bed and two Twin beds. The beds are new and comfortable. I love this little community of Pembina. Everyone I have met her is soo nice. I'll be staying here anytime I'm working in the area. Give them a try, you will be happy you did.

Hotel prices are ridiculous in Winnipeg. Even as a long-time Marriott Bonvoy member, I couldn't get a break. It has been the case for a good couple of years at least. I did something different. I stayed in Steinbach. I had never been. It was the best decision that I made staying at this Days Inn. I didn't mind a drive into Winnipeg. I stayed here for nine nights. I started off as a new Blue Wyndham rewards member. I left being Gold. It only takes five nights with a Wyndham hotel to make this jump. I can now do a late checkout (it would have cost me $20 as a Blue member) along with other perks. I never had a problem finding a parking spot. There are many. The lot is shared with Chuck's Roadhouse across from it. You can certainly smell the farmland, depending on which way the wind blows. If you have an electric vehicle, there is a single charging station for you. I only saw one electric car use it during my entire stay. Checking in was smooth. It was likely because a lot of the heavy lifting was done beforehand. Pre-checking consists of taking a photo of your driver's licence and entering your credit card information on a secure Wyndham site. You don't need to do the photo check at the hotel. You do need to swipe your credit card, though. I had the nicest man at the front desk. He was patient with my being distracted by a slushie machine at the counter. Free slushies from 2 pm till 11 pm every day?! Yes, please! He let me know that slushies run during the summertime. I already knew that I loved this place. I had a slushie every night. It was weird that my credit card wouldn't work with their machine. I used another one that worked fine. I got my room cards. I ended up on the third floor, which is the top floor. I got a welcome text from the front desk. It was nice. I used the texting service twice during my stay. My first question was whether it had a laundry room. It did! It's on the first floor, roughly three floors from my room. When I walked into my room, I was welcomed by a rubber duck on my nightstand. So cute! One morning, at 8 am, the TV in my room decided to power itself on. So weird. Was it possessed?! I got a network error. The wifi connection was fine. I texted the front desk for assistance. I was heading out anyway and a male staffer chatted with me about the issue downstairs and had also texted me. I also had a concern about the shower gel and conditioner running out in the shower. Housecleaning seemed to have forgotten to refill them for a while. This man took care of that concern, too. He was amazing! Housecleaning cleaned the bathroom and change my bedding every three days. I appreciated it. I'm not a slob and don't need that sort of cleaning every day. I just wished that this group looked at the shower gel. I clearly didn't go through all of it and the conditioner. It hadn't been topped up for a good month, I'd reckon. They were great changing my towels daily. I appreciated that, although I could have gone every few days with a change there, too. I woke up at 8 or 9 am, and stayed in my room watching TV or uploading photos to Yelp till 11 am or noon. Housekeeping still came once I was out of my room. One morning, the elevator wasn't working. I took the stairs down. It was all carpeted, which made me think how crazy cleaning it would be in the winter. It was fluffy when I walked down. My room was comfortable. It had two queen beds. One was left alone. I slept in the other. The air conditioning was extremely effective during the heatwave. No complains. My room had a fridge and a microwave. I liked having cold drinks and heating up ramen when I needed a snack. The bathroom was clean. The shower had good water pressure. It was spacious. No issues with anything other than the lack of shower gel. I did like that it had Dove products. There was free breakfast downstairs from 6 am till 10 am every day. It had hot foods, such as scrambled eggs and ham. I liked that there was fresh fruit. You could make your own waffles. There was also bread, muffins, bagels, cereal, yogurt, and more. It was decent. Recycling is interesting. You can only recycle beverage containers here. This hotel was nicely maintained and pretty quiet, except for kids who will also enjoy running down long hallways. I don't get it. I never did that as a kid. Checkout was equally as smooth. You did all that online. You could also tip specific groups, such as the front desk or housekeeping. I ended up splitting my tip between the two. I am going through slushie withdrawal symptoms and am contemplating getting my own slushie machine. I had a great stay at this hotel and getting to know Steinbach. I had the best vacation thanks to being rested and happy here. (241)

There was a minifridge, microwave oven and a Keurig coffee maker (along with two coffee K-cups and a tea K-up) in the room. WIFI was free ... it wasn't overly quick, though, at times. Parking was free and self-park in the parking lot. A continental breakfast (bagels, boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, etc.) was included. From 5pm to 8pm last night, they served free soup. There was no restaurant in the hotel, though there is a Pizza Hut about a block away. There are other restaurants within driving distance. There is a mall a couple blocks away as is the Automobile City Monument.

My son (age 46) and I (age 75) visited Aikens Lake Wilderness Lodge for the second time this past…read moreweek. This is my 33rd fishing trip to Manitoba and 18th lodge visited. We were the first group in for this season. Other than being very cold and rainy it was a great trip. Nothing has changed since our first visit in 2019. In my opinion this is the best overall lodge in Manitoba. There are so many different ways that this lodge is superior to others but let me try and highlight a few. Let's start with the booking process. Pit, the owner and General Manager, appears to sit at his computer 24 hours a day. When you contact him, you get an almost immediate response. His communication is clear and to the point. When you book you get a provisional slot hold until you make your deposit. You can send in a check or use a credit card. Once you book his wife, Julie, takes over and contacts you about any special requests you may have. If you have any special dietary requests, booze orders or the like she makes sure it happens. Next are the lodge facilities. The cabins are immaculate and appear brand new. Ours had two bedrooms each with a mini split heater and AC and a living room with a fireplace. There was also a screened in porch. A short walk to the main lodge itself which houses the dining room and "Big Mollys Bar". The bar is unusual in that it includes a happy hour before dinner where the drinks are free. At most lodges I have fished the groups tend to keep to themselves. One impact of the happy hour is that most groups become very friendly. Secret spots and lures are shared freely and you make new friends. We have already made contact we people we met at the lodge and are making plans to met again next year. On to the food. Most lodges have a fixed breakfast. At Aikens you can order whatever you want for breakfast. I had asked Julie to have some hot peppers for my omelet and they sure were hot! The shore lunches were also unique. The lodge has prepared several sites throughout the lake with picnic benches, metal roofing to protect from the rain, propane cook tops and chopped wood for the open firs. This not only keeps you dry and comfortable but dramatically reduced the food preparation and cooking time. The lunches themselves are not just the old fried fish but included different variety of batters and baked fish. Dinner at the lodge was also special every night. Julie cooked for us a few nights and she is the best chef in Canada. One night we had a pork chop that must have been 2 inched thick but was still moist and tender. Steak night riveled any steak house in Winnipeg, The staff were also exceptional. Pit, Julie and Patrick are all co-owners and unlike many other lodges are on site. This ensures that if any issues arise, they are dealt with quickly and properly, They have hired a great group of young ladies to work the dining room and cabins. They are friendly and hard working. The guides are also good. They tend to hire young men in college who work there for4 to 6 years so you always have an experienced guide who knows the lake in your group. The newer ones receive formal training from Pit and Pat and also learn from the more experienced guides. The fishing is also good. The boats are newer 18-foot Lunds powered by 60HP Yamaha motors. They have very comfortable cushioned chairs, depth finders, live wells and trolling motors. Most lodges have. 16-foot boats and 20 or 30HP engines, benches and no electronics You can really cover a lot of ground quickly with these 60 HP motors! It was very cold (low 40's) and rainy during our trip which impacted the fishing. However we still managed to catch several pike on the low 40s and had an afternoon during which we caught walleye over 22 inches for 3 hours straight. I made the "century club" by catching 4 walleyes totaling over 100 inches in the same day. We can't wait to return next year!
