I enjoyed my experience here but I will say the value didn't match the price point and the inconsistency in quality of food was the issue. It is still a great place to go if you're in the area, the coffee based drinks were made well and the service was good for it to be a busy weekday morning. The fish was good but it wasn't fried crispy and the smothered potatoes lacked a lot of flavor. I felt like they were being conservative with flavor and seasoning.
We decided to eat here after visiting the Presidential Obama Center, my first time. The service was good but I think the chefs were struggling with the orders as something was missing from each of our entree or added something that we omitted. Anyway I got the Gumbo and by golly it was delicious and had a nice kick to it. I also got the shrimp po-boy it was okay but I asked for onions and there were none. I will come back for breakfast/brunch and try again though! It's nestled at the bottom of a beautiful condo building and parking on the street.
This has been on my list to try for years. I will say its great to see the longevity this business has. The place was decorated beautifully and the staff were pleasant. We ordered pancakes for the kids. Then we had salmon croquette meal. We also had the basic breakfast. The food was good. We ordered a biscuit with our meals. Those biscuits were the best I've ever had. They have some special butters they serve with the biscuits the plan whipped butter was good enough for me. Overall I would definitely come back and I recommend
When my ex-wife came in town to see her godmother, we met for lunch at Dawn AM Eatery before having a go of the town. We shared the smoked salmon deviled eggs. The yolk didn't have a strong mustard base, but it was still good. The saltiness of the capers would have been a bit much on them. My ex ordered the catfish with collard greens and a side of slaw. I must admit that they scored high for the crust in terms of crunchiness and flavor. The greens could have used a little more seasoning. I am no fan of slaw, so I cannot speak to how it tasted. I ordered the pot roast and jalapeno grits. You can have shrimp and grits. Give me pot roast and jalapeno grits any day. The pot roast was tender and the grits were creamy without being runny. Dawn AM Eatery packs out fast. The website recommends making reservations. Because we were playing by ear, we went as a walk-in and had a 30-minute wait. It was well worth the wait, from service to good eating. Next time we will make a reservation. Note: I was so in the moment that I didn't photograph our other dishes.
Love this restaurant. The people are very friendly and the food is amazing. We had Na'Kiya as our server this time, and she was very friendly. I had the pot roast, my go-to, and it never misses. My son had the cinnamon roll French toast, which he enjoyed. It tasted just like its name. Then we shared the chicken n waffle bites. Unfortunately, those were a miss. They lacked flavor overall. The chicken wasn't seasoned and the breading wasn't delicious. I would not order these again. Outside of that, everything was great! Will definitely be back here.
My experience at Dawn has Pros and Cons. The food was so good. I have the devil eggs, the breakfast sandwich, ground turkey patty on a biscuit, Yummy. However my server was lack luster. She was not attentive and forgot us on several occasions. A hostess who noticed our servers lack of attention had to start helping us and pouring water and taking our order. I would go again but I will make a point to share any concerns immediately.
We tried Dawn AM Eatery based on a friend's recommendation. Fortunately we had a reservation so we were seated promptly. We ordered the following: bang bang broccoli (5/5; crispy and delicious great sauce), summer roll (3/5; okay. Peanut sauce wasn't great. I've had much better at Thai restaurants) , 1000 layer crispy potatoes (4/5; quite good. Flavorful and tender potatoes) , unagi eggplant (4.75/5; really really good, tender and great flavor. My favorite dish of the night), red dragon sushi (4/5; quite tasty. Well balanced. The carrot was quite tender), chili crab noodles (3.5/5; decent. Nothing stand out), peri peri kebab (4/5; everything was well cooked and the sauce was tasty), umami hour drink ( similar to old fashioned w miso; 3/5- idk just disappointing. Muted almost. I don't think miso belongs in this drink ultimately. I thought this would be a safe order after I sent my lychee keen back but no...). Our waitress was nice and attentive though and they have nice outside seating. Probably a 3.5/5 meal overall but this was one of my few dinners in Chicago so I'm fairly upset.
Dawn Eatery was excellent. The decor is beautiful. The entrees are unique. I had the lemon raspberry waffle, it was delicious. My husband had the cornbread French toast with fried chicken. He liked it, the chicken was moist, but the chef stopped seasoning it a little bit before the ancestors told them to. So the chicken could have been a bit more flavorful. Our friend had the lemon pancakes and she loved them. The restaurant was full, but so was our coffee and water glasses. The server was attentive.
I would have given this place 4 stars but I strongly dislike restaurants with a "whole party must be present before we seat you policy". We made a reservation and my friend arrived before me. Mind you we are visiting this area and aren't sure about parking and I have a baby so coordinating those things can make you delayed. Needless to say my friend was unable to be seated until we arrived. Once I did arrive it still took about 15 minutes to actually be seated because the hostess is backed up helping other people. Seems like a staffing issue as well the experience was chaotic to start. Now our server was very nice and had good recommendations. I got a cookie butter latte and it was so good! Over priced for basically a 8 oz drink though. We all got the Big Benny and it was really good I enjoyed the fried green tomato as the base instead of an English muffin. I got a side of hash browns and my friend got a side of pancakes and both were good as well. Someone else brought our food out but we didn't have any silverware so we had to wait a few minutes before we could actually eat. I might come back here but was turned off by the initial seating experience.
I had a pick up order. Arrived early for my pickup time, food was ready but it wasn't given to me for another 10-15 minutes. Service was extremely poor. Restaurant was quite full and a bit loud but not unbearably so. I ordered brioche French toast, jambalaya skillet, and 2 banana pudding matcha lattes. The matcha's: Only one matcha latte was made and I had to request the second. Neither were banana pudding anything, literally bananas weren't even in the room. No banana taste at all. I said to them it had no topping, no whipped cream, no vanilla cookie crumble. After saying something and waiting an extra 5 minutes for them to check that they said "yeah we ran out of that". So you think you should just serve people whatever they want despite what they actually ordered?? No banana syrup in them despite being told "it still has all the banana flavor". Ultimately told them I didn't want them and I wanted a refund. Brioche French Toast: No powdered sugar, no mascarpone, no syrup. Only thing they remembered was the toast itself and berries. French toast was dry, unsweet, and truly not worth it in my opinion. Ordered for my boyfriend and he said it was underwhelming. He said he would give it a 1.5/5. I'm inclined to agree. Jambalaya Skillet: Quite literally worst jambalaya I've ever had, it tasted like it was leftovers and they just put cheese and some scrambled eggs on top. The jambalaya was cold and bland. Even adding hot sauce did nothing. Barely any spice. Lacking sausage, with few pieces of chicken. I would give it a 1/5. Genuinely wouldn't recommend or order again. This was my second time eating food from Dawn (Once dining in and once ordering to go). The first time wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable. I don't know if it's worth a 3rd try.
I really enjoyed this place. I don't get much soul food so maybe I'm just excited. But the greens, cabbage, Mac n cheese with the fried catfish is absolutely delicious
### Dawn AM Eatery Review Got up this morning and everyone decided to have breakfast at Dawn AM Eatery. My sister made reservations for our family. She initially tried to make one reservation for 12 people but was told she could only make **two reservations for six people each**, both for 9:00 AM. That was the first red flag. I walked in at 9:00 AM, and as a Kenwood Academy alum, I saw the Kenwood Academy sign and thought to myself, *"This place is going to be good!"* Boy, was I wrong! Everyone who was already there had been seated, but our family was split up--half on one side of the restaurant and the other half on the complete opposite side. One side had a long bench with approximately 16 tables, and that entire section was practically empty. I asked the manager if our family could be seated together on that side since the tables were empty. She told us **no**. I asked why, since there were plenty of open tables. She simply said, *"We have other reservations."* I explained that there would still be plenty of tables available for those reservations, but she remained firm and completely unwilling to accommodate us. Then she told us that if we wanted to sit together, we could sit **outside**. Keep in mind--it was raining, and we had my **80-year-old mother** with us. Needless to say, sitting outside was not an option. What really bothered me was the manager's attitude. There was no apology, no attempt to find a reasonable solution, and no sympathy for the situation. She was rude and completely unaccommodating. We also had three additional people join our group unexpectedly, and they were told they would have to sit outside because we had more people than originally reserved. Then came the service. Our waiter was extremely inattentive and acted as though he didn't really want to serve our group. He took our order, and then we waited...and waited...and waited. At one point, I went outside to check on our other family members who were seated separately. They weren't waiting for their food--they were **well into their meals**. It was around **10:20 AM** when our waiter finally came over and said, *"Your food will be out shortly."* Our food finally arrived at approximately **10:25 AM--an hour and a half after we arrived!** Unfortunately, some of my family members were visiting from out of town and had plans to go to the **Obama Presidential Center** after breakfast. Because of the extremely long wait, they had to leave immediately after eating and couldn't enjoy the rest of the day with us as planned. So, unfortunately, our experience was: Poor service Rude and inattentive waiter Unaccommodating management No apology or attempt to resolve the situation Family unnecessarily separated 1 1/2-hour wait for our food** The only reason I'm giving Dawn AM Eatery **one star** is because the food itself was decent. For a family gathering of 16 people, this was a very disappointing experience. We came together to enjoy breakfast and spend time with family, including relatives visiting from out of town. Instead, we spent most of our time waiting, being separated, and dealing with poor customer service. **Needless to say, I will not be returning anytime soon.** Dawn AM Eatery--you can do better.
What a cute little diner! We went to the Science and Industry Museum to see the Anne Frank exhibit and we needed lunch.. Thank you fellow YELPERS for helping me with choosing this wonderful gem! We both orderd the homemade chicken noodle soup. Very good. We both had the pot roast sandwich. I had mine with a side of broccoli and my husband had his coke slaw. We both enjoyed our sandwiches. If it wasn't so far, we would diner here again!

Food was absolutely delicious and service was fast definitely check out Dawn's AM Eatery if your in town read more
Service was a tad bit slow but it was good. The food was even better. We ordered a variety of things and everything was delicious. I will say the rice served with the salmon croquettes could be switched to a plain white rice instead of the current jasmine/basmati thing they have going now. The rice was very sticky and hard to mix in such a small bowl. There was a medical emergency in the restaurant during our visit and staff handled the situation well, with respect and patience. The owner was also walking around greeting ppl letting us know this is a sister restaurant to 14 Parish. read more

I came here on my day off, Thursday morning, with a Griffin MSI reservation in about an hour. It was sparsely populated, which was a relief to me, I heard it could be busy with spotty service. I was seated by a window and given a menu. The Halloween decorations were a nice touch. The waiter, a nice young man, answered my questions with certainty. I ordered decaf coffee, shrimp/grits, and an English muffin. I really wanted the biscuit but I had a lot of calories to consume later; also, the English muffin was a cool tribute to the 007 James Bond exhibit. Usually the beverage is served first, but I received my coffee with the food. Not too pleased, but the food itself was awesome! There were plenty of grits with the shrimp, and they were spicy but not overwhelming. If I were with someone, I would have considered pancakes or an egg dish. I heard this place offers 'High Tea'. I will read some reviews of that and see if I want to go! read more
I was very happy to add Dawn A.M. Eatery on the list for my personal 2024 Brunch Challenge. I've seen the restaurant a few times while driving in Hyde Park for tacos, but I had no idea of the amount of southern classics that were on the menu. The restaurant is located at the base of the Windemere House apartments. Some of the interesting dishes that are at Dawn A.M. Eatery are: Chicken and Waffle and smoked salmon deviled eggs as appetizers. There's also pot roast and jalapeno grits and Georgia peach pancakes. We basically filled the table with food, including Lemon Raspberry Waffles, Blackened Catfish and a side of Jalapeño Grits with bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns. We also enjoyed a croissant and orange roll. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our food; my tastebuds were definitely doing a happy dance. While dining, one of the owners walked around and greeted guests, and asked how we were doing and if we enjoyed the meal. I thought that was a nice experience before leaving. If you're ever in the Hyde Park area, you should definitely check it out. Reservations are highly suggested. read more

We chose this spot because it's near the Obama Presidential Center. We were a group of six, and several friends had just flown in. We were looking forward to catching up, but the experience was awful. Despite having reservations and arriving early to a completely empty restaurant, we were immediately hit with a rigid 90-minute table limit. The hostess gave me a dirty look when I asked for the restroom, handed me a key, and gave flippant directions .Service only got worse. Our server was incredibly slow, taking forever to bring coffee and never once refilling water for our table of six.The food was highly disappointing. The chicken and waffles are deceptive--it was just a few fried chicken bites dipped in waffle batter. My salmon croquettes were overcooked, dry, and the eggs and rice all arrived cold. I had to wait on my missing biscuit, which then only came with one jelly. Asking for more butter and jelly caused even more delays. To top it off, a friend explicitly declined an extra order of toast for her shrimp and grits. The server brought out a single slice cut in half anyway, and we were shocked to find a $5 charge for it on the final bill. The ambience is nice, but the hospitality is nonexistent. I will absolutely not return and cannot recommend this place to anyone. read more
Dawn represents a really fun eating experience. I think when it comes to breakfast food, it can be so easy to get used to the usual offerings. At Dawn, there's a playfulness in the way they explore flavor while remaining true to what we would think of as breakfast food. I ordered the Georgia Peach pancakes and they were AMAZING. The portion size is on point and in my opinion could actually feed two people. The peaches tasted fresh and were super well seasoned. The creme anglaise was perfect and of course the pancakes were light and fluffy. These are an absolute hit and I WILL be back for more. The service is also really great and attentive. Any extras we needed they were more than happy to assist. The overall decor feels like a nod to a traditional diner brought into the modern era with a nod to art deco style as well. This in my opinion lends to a really fun and funky experience. read more

DAWN was definitely a good brunch spot. What I really enjoyed was the customer service, the bacon in the glasses, and their strawberry mimosas. Only thing I would say is the catfish does need to be deep fried a little more since it's so meaty, but overall I would go back read more
When this place first opened up, they would accept reservations. As of recently they no longer accept reservations, first come first serve only. We decided to give this place a try and did not have a problem getting a table on a late Saturday morning. I will say, parking can definitely be a challenge. Customer service was great. Very friendly and professional. My wife ordered their Chicken & Cornbread French Toast and I ordered their Shrimp & Grits. The French toast were really good. The fried chicken was very delicious. Perfectly fried and seasoned. Best part of this dish was the spiced peach compote that it was served with. Seems like a dish that I would eat in Atlanta. My shrimp and grits were all tasty. You get 5 perfectly Cajun seasoned shrimp on top southern style grits. And chopped green onion. A very flavorful and filling dish. I can definitely see myself returning in the near future. read more

I wanted to love this place, but it was just ok. The cornbread French toast was very underwhelming. It was super soft, topped with a warm peach compote, and super soft canned peaches. Honestly, it felt like the entire dish was mush. The texture was just completely off. Fresh peaches would help bring a bit of texture to the dish. Overall, it's mediocre at best. The chicken thigh had very little flavor. I simply don't understand how a southern restaurant can have under seasoned fried chicken. Additionally the chicken was not properly battered as the vast majority separated during the frying process. Lastly, it's not a good value meal. $20 for a chicken thigh and french toast is absurd. I hate to sound repetitive, but overall the meal felt incomplete. Something is missing, perhaps a side of eggs and a berry fruit salad. The meal had no color, poor presentation, it was just blah. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits. The taste was fine, but again, it's another blah dish. There was literally no presentation, it looked like someone just tossed a few shrimp on top and sprinkled a couple chives. The dish wasn't elevated at all. The dish looked more like IHOP shrimp and grits, not a $22 shrimp & grits dish. read more

It is hard to surprise me but this Southern Kitchen did just that. Service was impeccable. Friendly and knowledgeable, their recommendations were spot on. The food was incredible, prepared with love and style. Don't miss the Cinnamon roll or the Pot Roast With Cheddar Jalapeno grits. Wow. Good coffee and fresher pressed juices topped it off. I know this place often gets flack for high prices. But whatever. It's good food! Great sit down and take out service. The fried chicken is fantastic. Mac and cheese is divinity. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Dawn in Hyde Park. I came in for brunch after church on a Sunday, and it was very busy. Fortunately, we had a reservation and were seated within 15-20 minutes. The ambiance was simple and clean nothing particularly special, but comfortable. We started with the fried green tomatoes and smoked salmon deviled eggs. The appetizers were good, although the presentation was a bit off. The service, however, was extremely slow. It took nearly 30 minutes to get our cocktails, and the food came shortly after. That said, the highlight of the meal was definitely the short rib and grits. It was rich, flavorful, and cooked perfectly a 10/10. The wait was well worth it for that dish alone. I'll definitely be back read more

Ok so I've had the chance to trying this place out a few additional times, and sorry but not sorry, updates are needed. The food is still yummy, but the service has changed drastically. I'm so sad because I just knew this would be my go to spot especially when I'm trying to show off to out of towners. But no, my great review has suddenly turned into a hmm will it be a never visit again? After my first visit I actually brought back out of towners on two separate occasions and both times, the service was HORRIBLE. What once was prompt and easily to go in for a small party and be seated has now turned into an over hour wait, with the potential of being forgotten about. Just beware, they are still ironing the kinks out, but logistically you can tell management is lacking for the "new Hyde Park hot spot." Food yummy Service sucky sucky May return in a year but kinks must be worked out. read more

My friend and I came here one weekend for brunch. They don't accept reservations for parties under 7 people, so at 2pm on a Saturday, our expected wait time was 45 minutes. We ended up only waiting about 25 minutes for a table. The restaurant is bright, open, chic, but on the smaller side. We did bottomless mimosas for $30 and started off with appetizers: I had fried green tomatoes and my friend had the chicken biscuit sandwich. Both were delicious, hot and fresh. My friend's entree was shrimp and grits and I got the Southern plate which consists of 3 pieces of fried chicken and 2 sides. Everything on the menu looks good, so it was difficult to make up my mind. I will say that I loved everything I tasted! Their biscuits are top 2 biscuits I've ever had. They are huge, fluffy, buttery and don't need anything. The food came out promptly and our waiter was so sweet! The meal was so good, I went back the next week to try more items. I ordered the pot roast and grits as well as the bacon trio and more biscuits. The pot roast was tender, flavorful and filling. I would ask for gravy on the side next time. For $18, you can skip the bacon. My serving was burned, but I can still taste the 3 flavors distinctively. It's labeled as 1/2 lb, but the strips that I received did not equal half a pound of bacon, even though the slices were thick cut. read more
Okay when a restaurant starts off saying they are 'southern inspired' I have my doubts being that my folks are from Nawlins! Boombastic side eye to you @Tupelo Honey in Ohio! But being back home in the Chi I should have known we would do it right and this place definitely does! Not to mention come on International Woman Day that this is a Black Woman owned establishment in the historically Black-American neighborhood of Hyde Park where I grew up at! Let's keep it neighborhoody OKAY! The place was packed! People in the waiting area and outside in the apartment building lobby to get in. I was glad we had reservations and do come on time or you will not be seated lovelies. The bakery gave out samples due to the wait which was nice and I loved to see a mixed crowd enjoying the warm environment, good food and drink, and great soul R&B music playing. Plenty of picture taking, catching up, and inside jokes where this felt more like a reunion than a restaurant. Let's keep this going and in the family shall we! My Big Benny with scrambled eggs and cheddar grits hit the spot since and was not too much or too little - pricing at $30. While my party had the Fish Fry and a mimosa- pricing at $30 as well. I had a drink cause I was stressed we may not get in since she was late but overall a good time. Note you can't sit here forever, they have to turn those tables hunny. But a gracious 90 minutes will be enough to eat, share some literal and proverbial tea if you want and be on your way. The overall bill for two entrees, one side, two drinks was around $87 dollars and I tipped well because it was warranted and that's what family does- we take care of each other! read more

Just go. The pot roast and grits were perfect in every way. Literally. This was exactly how I like my grits (creamy), the beef was wonderfully seasoned and tender. By the way, I like salt in my food. Not too much, but enough. The jalapeño flavor was there without the spice and I appreciated that because I did not want spicy grits. The space is super cute, it feels airy and fresh. The biscuit was also a hit. The fried green tomatoes were tasty, BUT the tomatoes are cut too thin. If they fix this, they would be great. The place is pretty buzzy also. Rev. Jesse Jackson was there enjoying a meal, and it appears he was a regular based the staff's mannerisms. Congratulations to the southside, another great restaurant read more

One friend wanted bottomless mimosas. The other friend wanted to support a Black-owned business. And I've had this place on my "Must Try" list for a while. So, we all won with Dawn! No reservations, but can add yourself to their wait list in advance, which I would highly recommend. We did that as we drove to the restaurant, but it was still about an hour wait on a recent summer Sunday morning. Their check-in process at the host stand could use a little more organization, as the entry area is small and gets a bit crowded. But, let's talk about the food! Everything was delicious! The cake-like biscuits are massively large! The fried green tomatoes were perfectly fried (not overly greasy), sliced with the right amount of thickness so the tomatoes were hearty. The salmon in the Niçoise salad was lightly seasoned to perfection and cooked to the perfect temperature (nothing worse than dry fish). The bottomless mimosa, at $30 per person, is a good deal, especially since you can mix and match your base: orange, cranberry, peach, mango, strawberry, etc. Busy as it was, our server was attentive and was able to make a warm connection with us. Definitely adding this place into my brunch rotation. read more

I went to visit my son in Chicago and he took me to eat here. The food and service was exceptional. We stumbled upon this place after leaving the Museum of Science and Industry. We saw people eating something that looked delicious in the window, it was about lunchtime and we were hungry, so we stopped in. Super good spot! The inside is has the cutest decor and color palette with lots of pastels, bright colors, and cool/funky light fixtures. The service was really good. Everyone was nice. When we asked for suggestions our waitress definitely has helpful opinions. The menu is full of southern foods and twists on classics. We ended up ordering the smoked salmon deviled eggs, a couple drinks, the Benedict (fried green tomatoes with smoked salmon), and the cornbread French toast with fried chicken (this was super moist, the peach compote was delicious, and the chicken was juice and crisp). Everything was delicious! The portions are smaller, like any fancier restaurant. The price crawled up there quick. Over $100 for the two of us if you treat yourself to all the extras, which I would recommend. read more
Listen up! Is this mic on? Haha! As a Southerner in the Midwest, this place is the closest I've ever gotten to authentic Southern food, even compared to spots in the South! Many reviews mention slow service and long waits, sometimes up to two hours, depending on the time of day. But let me tell you, I'd wait all over again...or just come after brunch hours. Once we were seated, our server Camille was fantastic. She had great recommendations for this indecisive eater (I get major FOMO with dishes haha). The fried chicken was crunchy and flavorful, served with hot sauce. The biscuit wasn't included, but I wasn't leaving without one, especially with the 6+ butters to choose from. I wanted the honey butter, but they were out. Camille hooked me up with the next best thing: cinnamon butter, and it did not disappoint. The greens tasted like they came straight from grandma's kitchen, and the yams were an excellent pairing. The drinks were delicious, and after waiting for so long, they were the perfect way to start our meal. I do wish the restaurant was a bit bigger, but it's an excellent place to bring out-of-towners and meet with friends. While there isn't a lot of room for large parties, we did see that they accommodated them. Overall, a fantastic experience! read more
I'll be happy when restaurants focus on taste and portions more than presentation. I was disappointed with everything except the lemon lavender tea. Check my photos for everything I describe below. Green tomatoes: A SLIVER OF TOMATO. 3/$11. The tomato was non existent and breaded too heavily! We couldn't cut the tomato in half because the skin was tough. The remoulade was good but the feta didn't add anything. Total disappointment. Chicken & Cornbread French Toast: Boneless chicken thigh breaded and fried nicely with good seasoning. The "cornbread" french toast was more like plain cake and peaches on top. $19. I should've ordered regular french toast because those had BIG pieces of challah bread and toppings. This was a rip off. Clee's Rich Lad: Dry and too much egg. $17. There was more egg than meat. The aioli was thinly spread. I recommend the egg being sunny side to add some moisture and make the sandwich easier to eat. The coleslaw is flavorless but a nice portion. I don't have a review on the pancakes because I didn't try them but they were nice sized. Having your guests check in at the same counter as to go orders is chaotic especially because the waiting area is tiny and you don't know who's waiting to be seated, who's waiting to check in or who's picking up an order. There were PLENTY of seats so I expected to be seated immediately. The hostess was skipping my group of 3 to seat parties of 2 who came after us. I made my way to the stand to remind them my party was here then we were seated. Service needs major work. Our waitress took our order, brought our drinks and we never seen her again until she brought the bill. There were other staff members floating around asking if we needed anything, etc. read more
From the folks that brought you 14 Parrish in Hyde Park comes another neighborhood gem. I always love when a new Black owned restaurant comes along. A friend of mine has been raving about this place for a couple of weeks and she loved it so much she decided to have a networking event there. I came before the event started to get a feel of the place. Very diner style joint and definitely a neighborhood spot. I got a seat at the bar since she was there working on her laptop. We started with the smoked salmon deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes. Both were very good! Washed the apps down with a mezcal based cocktail called Spell on You. It was so good, the whole joint started sipping after they saw me drink it...definitely was a hit for the event. Next I went with the Pot Roast & Jalapeno Grits....Woooooo! This is a very good dish and comes in a very nice sized portion so you may want to share and get other items as well because this one will fill you up if you eat it alone. I had some room for dessert so I went with the Mississippi Rhum Bar which is a chocolate tart covered with chocolate icing and praline pecans..pretty good! Maria and the behind the bar crew was great to me and the rest of the patrons...staff here overall is great! I loved my Dawn experience and plan to come back very soon to try some of those down home goodies on the menu. read more
It seems like people had a couple bad, but singular experiences. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were seated promptly when our reservation time came. Our server was friendly and helpful and food came out fast and hot. I appreciated that they brought the appetizer and waited until we finished to bring our mains. The bussers were efficient and not intrusive. The food runners seemed a little cranky, but we didn't let it bother us. Our drinks were solid, but definitely Chicago priced. The shrimp and grits were recommended and delicious. Cheesy and the right texture. The jambalaya skillet was also tasty and rich. We started with the chicken and waffle appetizer and were surprised that they cook the battered fried chicken into the waffles vs on top. I'm not sure if I liked that, but the waffle portion was excellent and would make me order a waffle next time. It was pretty full and noisy, but we enjoyed the lively ambiance. We did have to shout so didn't stay exceptionally long. The space itself is gorgeous and welcoming. Free street parking in the area. We will be back. read more
