Attended a live music event on Sunday with a party of 8. Everything was wonderful until they had to keep washing out our plastic glasses after every order. Not sure that I have ever been to a venue that didn't have ample supplies. I reported it to the guys upon entry and of course I got the 'I will find out what the issue is right now' but he never moved. So disappointing. A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I were visiting Chicago for a wedding and we wanted to find somewhere within walking distance that we could have a good time. Little did we know that we'd walk into a quirky and intimate bar with a Wu-Tang cover band that would turn into a way more fun night than we anticipated. Neither of us have been to the Chi before so we definitely wanted to get some of the local flavors in during our visit. We were staying right in the heart of Hyde Park and thought 53rd street would be a safe bet for finding something entertaining. We found The Promontory first online, and then as we walked up we could hear the music blasting. Cover charge was only $5 for each of us, and this was a nice surprise. We are from Pittsburgh and it's hard, if not impossible, to find bars with covers as low as $5 on a Friday night. The Wu-Tang cover show was almost over by the time we got to the bar, but it was nice to hear a few good songs and enjoy the atmosphere. Well drinks were $7, which again isn't a bad deal at all. We stuck around for a while and mingled with some of the locals, and they seemed to be very fond of The Promontory. There were tables on the side of the dance floor and from other reviews the food here looks like it's worth a try. Next time we're in town we will definitely come back, and maybe we'll be able to enjoy some of their food or even another show if we're lucky! read more

The Promontory is a great venue to catch a show! I recently went to The Moth at The Promontory and had a good time. I don't know if this is always the layout but the front half had small round tables with 4 seats each and the back half was rows of seats without tables. The Promontory has some cool shows & slightly lesser known hip hop and R&B artists that come through. On the upcoming schedule I saw Joe Budden, Syleena Johnson, and Jim Jones - that's awesome! No food, drinks only in The Venue section of The Promontory. They had a few good beers on draft and they were priced $6-8. The only kind of strange thing was that it isn't a very big menu but our server didn't seem to know anything on the drink menu. Every item we ordered had to be looked at on the menu because she looked at us blankly when we ordered. It was kind of strange. However she was very nice and prompt after she started serving us. Initial ordering took about 30 minutes though! Bathrooms were clean but quickly ran out of toilet paper and there was a long line out the door, so they clearly don't have enough. All in all, a good small venue to watch a show and no major qualms about it! read more

I can't wait to comeback and try their food because it smelled amazing as my daughter and I walked through the restaurant. We were here for a comedy show for women who had never been on stage before and I swear many of them already seemed like pros to me. We had so much fun but we wished we had gotten there even earlier because we were way in the back. That didn't stop us from hearing them but depending on who was sitting in front of you, welp let's just say you couldn't see the comics. I wish I would have wrote this the day after we came from the show because I remembered my favorites names but now yeah my memories is like woman please. This was a free event but the Promontory treated us like we paid for each seat. They were so friendly it made we want to comeback to an event that you have to pay for(clearing throat) but I like the free too don't get me wrong...lol You should keep on the look out for the concerts they have, my daughter was telling me about a silent party they had here(for people that don't know its when you have headphones listening to your own music...sounds strange but it is a lot of fun) They have something for everyone you just have to check their calendar. What an awesome and intimate venue. Went here on a Tuesday for The Moth. The place was pretty packed, they had chairs at the front, seats around the bar in the back, and couches in the back as well. All the seats were full when we arrived about on time for the show. I liked the set-up a lot, the bar is at the back and drinks can be purchased throughout the show while you can still view what is going on. If you go in the restaurant, look toward the back past the hostess stand, there is a door marked "music" this will get you to a fairly long staircase which at the top is the venue. One not so great thing was the parking lot behind, it was pretty small and was poorly plowed when we went in February. Though there is a large parking garage not too far away in the same building as LA Fitness. The rates are the same, 0-2 hours is $5, 2-4 is $12, going up from there. I hope to come back and go to another show here soon! read more

The Promontory has become my go-to for black inclusive events. I've gone for Party Noire dance get downs and most recently to support local black creatives and businesses. Drinks are always on point and the community is amazing. Parking can be tough but there are spots farther down the block or metered parking if you're only staying a couple hours. But if you're honest you'll probably be there the whole afternoon. Set in Hyde Park you can easily go downstairs for a bite to eat or walk around the neighborhood and stop in at any of the local stores. Either way, this area is a gem and I always have a good time. Stop in or check their calendar for something specific. You'll have a great time! read more

We went to The Promontory to see Robert Glasper for a live show. The space itself is upscale but not so upscale that it seems exclusive. The space is intimate and dim with dark colored wood. The bar in the middle of the entrance is massive. A couple of feet from the bar is outside deck/seating area. The door retract to open up. Everyone was dressed really casual. Not a lot of jeans and tennis shoes here. The sound was all good. There wasnt a lot of standing room to watch the show but we made do. There was a surprise at the show, R Kelly came out and sang a little this made the show pretty good. The music venue is upstairs and the restaurant is downstairs. I eat here because from looking at the menu there aren't many things that might agree with my palate. I'm sorry to disappoint about the food but hey? Also, the parking can be a royal pain in the you know what, but if your from Chicago you should know this already. Im from Wisconsin....Go figure! read more

Let me tell you how The Promontory won my love. First of all, the space itself is beautiful, especially in the evening. Dark, but not too dark, intimate...date night written all over it! Or a ladies night, as I had. But that's not what won my love. Promontory has so many events and concerts going on, I'm always checking their page out to see what's next, and yet I haven't been to one. I was in the restaurant area. So that's not what did it either. And though I was in the restaurant area, I'd already eaten, so I didn't get to try the food menu yet. Their drink menu is a solid line-up, with ample beer, wine, and cocktail choices. I had some sort of kombucha beer, which was good. Maybe too good because I'm usually a one and done girl, but I had to order another. My head felt that in the morning, by the way. Still, this is not what won my love. What won my love is how DEEPLY they dove into the 90's R&B/hip-hop archives. You can go anywhere in the city and hear This Is How We Do It or Poison. You might even hear a little Next "Too Close."' I have never gone to an establishment that played Jason Weaver's "Love Ambition" before. I didn't know if anyone still appreciated that song like I do! This review is only for the concert venue located upstairs. I did not eat or have drinks in the downstairs dining area. Saw Goapele in concert to benefit the Betty Shabazz International Charter School. A female music teacher at the school opened up for Goapele and she was great. She had such a beautiful voice and soul with a great message. Goapele was fantastic, of course! The setup and space is perfect for an intimate concert. Very limited drink menu, but reasonably priced. Ordered a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for $40. Winking Owl at Aldi for $2.99 tastes better! Seriously, save your money and order something else. Our server, Diana, was great. Overall, all staff I encountered seemed friendly, yet professional. I will definitely return to the concert venue, but I definitely will not be ordering the Cabernet Sauvignon! read more

Was there Saturday night 12/22. Open, yet intimate restaurant/bar space on first floor. Good music playing in bar. Not too loud, and lighting not too dark. Bar staff were all super nice, and one guy in particular went above and beyond to get a silver sharpie for me so my EP could get signed by one of the musicians, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who we were there to see!! Five stars for that alone : ) Food was great. Good portion size and lots of interesting apps. The sweet potatoes with tiny popped sorghum were the best I have ever had anywhere - hearth roasted, glazed, charred, tender yumminess. And the charred, smoky Shishito peppers with miso mayo (aioli) were soooo good. The charcuterie was great with more interesting selections and portions than many restaurants. And creamy, smoked feta !!! I would 100% recommend this place and will be back. Our waiter was great, and the GM was super accommodating to the table next to house needing a drink recommendation. Music venue upstairs is really nice. Small-ish room, good sound and you can actually get coffee- something a lot of places do not have; and on top of that it was hot and good! Venue Review Only. Mad let down. Aside from this spot being mad pretentious for a rap show, it was even worse to vibe with the sound system. I don't know what to attribute the issue to either because the mics sounded alright for the million opening acts that weren't on the bill and then the main act goes on and what the fuck happened?!? I was rocking for most of the show right by the sound guy too and he's button pushing, knob twisting, light checking away and actually feeling the quality that he's producing. Every complete stranger agreed with me when I aired grievances about shitty mics. Classic "you had one job" scenario. Back to the pretentiousness though. The tables to the left and right of the stage are cool for a jazz night or any kind of performance that would call for them. But hip hop, nah. I get that there is a crowd that believes they're making major moves in life because they spent an extra $15 even when it's unnecessary. With my GA ticket I actually got better seating in the plush leather seats and couches near the bar. Other than that the space is pretty nice. I had high hopes for coming up on a new Southside venue and am still highly interested in the restaurant. I rarely have to travel south for a concert but I will give this venue one more shot. Update: Came back for a second show and not much changed. Microphones still sucked and the drink selection actually isn't all that either. read more

So I seriously think I found my new favorite spot! My gf and I decided to come here for a girls night out. We started at the bar downstairs with lots of appetizers and drinks. They are a bit pricey but DAMN was that food good! OMG seriously, it was like having orgasms in your mouth! The drinks were AMAZING...no actually, what's better then amazing? Because that's how good they were. After hanging with the bartenders and stuffing our faces with alcohol and food we decided to go upstairs. DJ was blacking some great tunes, and we really had a great time. We went on a Thursday, and I would definitely go back when there is a DJ. I was invited to a party here after the Chosen Few Fest. And girrrrl, I had such a GREAT time! As per reviews suggest, it's clean, a large space and good drinks. There was no issues or long lines at the door. I will say the drinks are pricey but hey, it's Chi. The DJ is doing a great job on the ones and twos. My girls and me were able to take pictures, dance and just be us. No judgement, no worries, just good clean fun in my little black dress. Upon leaving the M Lounge due to the size and lack of space, one of my friends that was also visiting Chicago told me about a place called The Promontory. Located in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, The Promontory is known for good food and live music but on Fridays and Saturdays the club personality kicks in. I am not sure if they were having a special event there but the Saturday night in April that I went, the cover was $20 and they also had a mandatory coat check. The cover could be paid with a debit card but for the coat check you had to pay with cash. Upon entry the line to get upstairs was long. Once inside the music was excellent and there was plenty of room to move and dance. Very spacious inside on the top floor. I have not tried the food here yet, but it is rare that you would have a great place to listen to music that is not located in downtown. A return trip is coming soon!! read more

In one weekend we saw the Lakha Khan, Hamid Drake, Karl Berger, David Murray, Shanta Nurullah & Classic Black, Ari Brown, and the mighty Pharaoh Sanders with the brilliant Chicago Underground Duo! This was part of the "Old and New Dreams - Hothouse Festival" to raise money to resurrect Hothouse. The Promontory has a great PA with speakers in the ceiling spaced through the room. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The drinks are very affordably price. We will definitely be back. Their bookings are solid. read more

We attended a Robert Glasper concert. I barely heard the Jazz as he more so played for the audience of R&B and hip hop heads, but I can't complain. This place is nicely set up. We sat in the row seating right behind the group of tables that are up front. Note to self: next time book a table. The seats we had were just fine but I now know that sitting at the tables not only gets you closer to the stage but a bit more leg room. The row seating worked out fine and if pushed I would sit there again. Being 5'9" female though a little leg room is a plus. The seats are designed for you to sit for a 1 hour concert. Beyond that the ones 'bottom' starts to hurt. There was standing room only in the back by the bar. Based on my view of it...no thanks. Give me a seat. The bar offered up the usually drinks and that was fine and helpful. The wait outside to get in was a drag but overall I would return to this place again and again for a concert. Upstairs there's a patio for brunch and an indoor club (i use the term loosely) on the other side. On a Saturday with a $20, i was not impressed but my friend wanted to dance. The floor space is huge and i will say that it was clean til the end of the night. Big bathrooms and bartenders were cool for tge most part. It was reggae night and there was a dance troup there which helped get people moving around 1:30am. We arrived at 12:45am and it was mostly dudes standing around like it was an 8th grade dance. We stayed til close at 3am. I'm too old to be out that late and this club is definitely geared towards the college kids albeit, the drink prices weren't. read more

This venue is awesome but I do not understand why the staff is so rude. I first got a drink at the downstairs bar. Very little people around and the bartender seemed like he was avoiding coming to us to serve us. At the upstairs bar SAME THING! My friend and I waited and waited and eventually we had to do the awkward "hey bartender can you please come over here" wave that we didn't want to do. The minute we did that the male bartender rudely tells us to hold on and then the female bartender comes over right away. What is the deal promontory? Don't serve alcohol if you are going to be annoyed with people who want to order drinks all night long. Maybe there is some behind the scenes drama with the staff. Such an unfortunate unpleasant experience today 4-21-19 @5:30pm. The waitress(Valencia) decided to chase my little sister & her friend down b/c she assumed they weren't going to pay their bill. I've been a PAYING CUSTOMER of this establishment for YEARS(since 2011 at least) just to be treated like a 2nd class citizen. I was in the restroom when the incident occurred so once I came back to our table and realized things had escalated I tried to clam things down. Next thing i know the manager decided to intervene and brought another bill over to our table stating "this is the bill, you need to pay it. That's it." Not once did he recognize that his server acted inappropriately by chasing customers down whom were never attempting to leave the premises. Not once did he even attempt to apologize for his employee's mistake. Several customers witnessed the treatment we received. As stated before, after several years of being a loyal customer to this business, I will NEVER SET FOOT/SPEND MONEY HERE EVER AGAIN!! read more

Prime location.... very nice location, but I often feel dissatisfied especially because they wait until nearly 2am to play good music. This was her first visit to the Promontory; she lives North and frequents, Space. Why did she leave the Promontory and ask for a refund, because she was ill treated and disrespected!!! People kept standing in front of her; the venue would not clear the area; she moved to a more comfortable spot and they made her move even though she was not obstructing anyone's view!! Jake nor Mario were reasonable and did not try to accommodate her, thus she left!! You've lost two more patrons!! I normally come to the Promontory for concerts because I love the intimate setting and because it is not standing room only. Unfortunately it can be a hit or miss with the actual event that is going on. For example, I went there for a Tweet concert that started more than 2 hrs late (despite the artist already being there) and we weren't notified that the starting time changed to an hour later (we're at 3hrs now). By this point everyone was upset and hungry (you can't order food from the venue side BUMMER because the food is good!) because it was a weekday and no one planned on being there into the next morning. Overall I won't hold it against them cause things happen just beware (It seemed to be a mix of a lot of venue problems & artist too) .The food is good and the drinks are a little pricey. Also the parking is kind of a pain if it's busy and the lot is full. read more

My favorite thing about Chicago is the music scene. When I entertain guests who have not been to Chicago, I always start with the Mag Mile and then take them to a neighborhood music event. I have been to many different venues around the city and I am PROUD to say that I now have one of the best in my own neighborhood. The bookings are excellent...the ambiance is to my liking and the staff is very friendly. The only reason I am not rating this venue with five stars is that it took too long for the server to bring our drinks. We live walking distance from the Promontory and would have had another round of drinks had we been given the option. We will try it again soon...hoping the service will be speedier. read more

Went to Promontory Music last night to hear Robert Irving III's Generations. WOW. Cool venue, great vibe, and world-class jazz. Nice drink menu and friendly service at reasonable prices. And the price of admission was only $10. That's less than a movie! What? Almost too good to be true, but, happily, it's not. An incredible evening with jazz royalty including outstanding young talent at a super-affordable price. I could not be happier. Thank you Promontory and Mo Better Jazz! read more

I went here last night for a roy Ayers concert. Went to the second show which started around 10p. We had to wait outside fir the first show audience to clear out.The venue was pretty clean when we got in. Had General admission seats, we managed to sit in the first row. The opening acts were good, actually good if not better than the main act, but I love Roy Ayers so it was good to see him. The sound UN the venue was fabulous but the xylophone was too loud at first then was events turned down. I would definitely return to the promontory again. Hope to Sr many of the sites that are at the Vic and Riviera at the promontory. The sound and location would definitely be a plus. read more
