My mom had the make it a classic breakfast which is two eggs, your style with your choice of sausage or bacon, toast or an English muffin. We also ordered a kid's order of pancakes to split! We each had a Greyhound drink which is coconut, rum, lime, grapefruit, and Marchino cherry. Delishhhhhh! Everything was great as always. Just have the chef to watch his cooking times. First food stop after the airport and they did not disappoint. I decided to try this place out based on the previous reviewes. I went on a Thursday morning but I'm sure on the weekend a reservation is required. You will have to drive around to find street parking. The place looks really nice inside. A great Restaurant Week pick! The deviled eggs were great and I appreciated the generous smoked salmon portion on top of each egg. The lamb and grits special was great - while the lamb was a bit overcooked, it still tasted great and the grits were magnificent. For dessert, we had the crunch cake, which had a nice balance between sweet, creamy, and tart. Portion sizes were so generous and I left feeling satisfied! Good Food, but the Customer Service Was Unacceptable My family and I ate at Dawn's Eateries on Saturday morning, August 8, 2026, and unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. From the moment we checked in, we were met with an unpleasant attitude at the hostess area. Thankfully, our waitress initially greeted us warmly, and the food itself was good. However, the customer service issues quickly overshadowed the meal. We ordered a coffee and a latte but were brought two coffees instead. After waiting approximately 20 minutes to have the issue corrected, our server explained that she would get the manager because the situation was out of her control. Unfortunately, the manager's response made the experience even worse. Instead of approaching our table professionally and trying to resolve a simple issue, she came across as rude, dismissive, condescending, and argumentative. My Uncle attempted to explain what had happened, but rather than listening and acknowledging our concerns, her demeanor felt very defensive and unprofessional. Eventually, we simply wanted to make sure the correct drink was made. As the manager of an establishment, I would expect someone to de-escalate a situation, listen to the customer, and find a reasonable solution not make customers feel as though they are the problem for bringing an issue to their attention. The food was good, but when you are paying good money to dine somewhere, you expect both good food AND good service. Unfortunately, we only received one of those. Lastly, the restroom situation was also surprising. The restaurant does not appear to have its own dedicated restroom for customers. We were given a key and/or instructed to go knock on a separate restroom door, which was inconvenient and not what we expected from the overall dining experience. I really wanted to enjoy Dawn's Eateries, especially because the food was good, but the attitude and lack of professionalism we experienced particularly from management left a very negative impression. Finally had the chance to check out Dawn. Word of warning...Be prepared to struggle finding parking (Hyde Park is notorious for terrible parking)! I am completely blown away!! I've wanted to visit this restaurant for months, and it was a complete dream. The food surpassed my expectations which were already high. I had the Pot Roast and Jalapeño Grits. It was perfection. The pot roast was tender and the grits were seasoned well. I will be dreaming about this dish. I regret going to Dawn and wish I patronized another establishment. We were seated at 10:30am, received water and waited. Orders were taken at 11am. Had nothing but water until about 11:15. At that point, my friend's 6yo son's food came out with our biscuit basket because she specifically requested it come out asap so he could eat. Then we waited. And waited. Had to call attention to our table so we could request utensils for her son and ourselves. We kept waiting to the point where we debated letting our server know to cancel everything. Our tickets for the OPC were 12:15 and we didn't want to risk being extremely late. As we were having this talk, food came out at 12:05. Unfortunately, we could not enjoy it because of the abysmal service, and needing to eat quickly to leave and make it to the center. And they had the nerve to tell us before we were seated that there was a 90-minute table limit. My friend and I ordered the fried catfish and we enjoyed it. Overall, the space and decor was nice and ample natural lighting thanks to the big windows. The food was absolutely amazing! I had the pleasure of dining at Dawn AM Eatery with a couple of friends on a Friday night, and it was such a lovely experience from start to finish. My friend made a reservation, but it looked like walk-ins were totally fine, there were a few open tables. Parking was super convenient, too! They offer free parking on the 5th floor of the Cornell lot, and I actually lucked out with free street parking right near the restaurant. From the moment we walked in, the hostess set the tone: warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. While seating us, she shared a few of her favorite menu picks (which my friends ended up ordering). This was my first visit, and I went with the Chik'n Bites... simply amazing. The batter was so well-seasoned, and the hot sauce, pretty sure it's house-made, was the perfect match. We shared the fried green tomatoes, my friends ordered the bacon platter, and I had the shrimp & grits with jalapeño and cheese grits. Chef's kiss. My drink of the night was the lavender lemonade, and it was perfection, not too sweet, just refreshing and beautifully balanced. At this time, there is one non-alcoholic (zero proof) drink option and it was shared that a mocktail menu is in the works. The ambiance is cute, cozy, and feels thoughtfully put together. Refreshing homey dinner with innovative takes on classic Southern dishes. For my appetizer, i got the biscuit basket. Truly some of the best biscuits I have had, they were moist, flakey and fluffy. Hot honey was house made and was soooooo potent/flavorful. I could eat this everyday. My main was the Chicken and Cornbread french toast. The Cornbread french toast is something I didn't know I needed in my life - truly delectable. The crispy and juicy fried chicken had a flavorful crust. We met one of my best pals who lives in Chicago here for breakfast before we started the drive home. This is a stylish restaurant on a corner; their website advertised free parking on the fourth floor of...somewhere. Unfortunately, we never found the fabled parking deck, but luckily there was street parking about a block and a half away and we were visiting during hours where we weren't charged. We selected this restaurant because you could make reservations; we got our reservation for 9:45. We unfortunately arrived a little late because we didn't account for road closures due to a cycling event in the area, but my friend got there on time and they held the table for us. The table actually wasn't even ready when we finally rolled in at about 9:55. However, it was ready within a minute or two of our arrival, so nbd -- I mostly just appreciate they kept it for us, though maybe they wouldn't have if my friend hadn't been there. The restaurant is a little nondescript on the outside but beautiful on the inside. There's lots of natural light and it has a sort of bougie/luxe feel without being super pretentious. It is rather echoey inside though, so speak up when talking! Service was pleasant but a little slow. I think they were maybe a little understaffed or overwhelmed by the volume of people visiting. We had multiple different waiters and waitresses assist us throughout their visit; it seemed like they were all stretched trying to help each other. My gal pal ordered the benedict, I got French toast and a blueberry lemonade, and my husband got the breakfast sandwich with a side of smothered potatoes. Overall, I think the food was decent though maybe not exceptional. I think the benedict was received the best, followed by the smothered potatoes. I liked the creative/southern spin on the benny though didn't try it myself. Husband gave me a bite of the potatoes, which were solid albeit a little on the cold side. They also were mainly just sliced potatoes cooked with onions, which was tasty but not what I think of necessarily when I hear "smothered." He liked his sandwich okay too, though it was pretty greasy. My French toast was cooked super well and still had a slight, pleasantly eggy taste with lots of vanilla and a semisweet syrup, but it was kind of dry (even with syrup). I didn't like the blueberry lemonade at all -- it didn't taste much like lemonade or blueberries, but was just slightly sour and watery. I thought the portion sizes were weird too. My French toast was massive but my husband's breakfast sandwich was sort of small and my pal's "big Benny" was almost comically small to my eyes given the price and the advertisement of it as, well, big. C'est la vie? I'm sure I'm not used to Chicago prices or portions, just thought it was weird that my entree was so enormous I couldn't even get close to finishing it while everyone else's was easily polished off. Again, our food wasn't disappointing, but maybe just didn't wow overall imo. I'd give this visit a 3.5 overall, but since you can't do half stars, I think it sits at a 3 for me. Celebrating Chicago Restaurant Week! Dawn restaurant serves traditional southern food and they do it well. Their menu features a variety of main dishes with a choice of two sides, a great way to try a variety of foods if dining with friends who like to share. The food was delicious and was served hot and fresh. Standouts were the fried catfish, gumbo and short rib with jalapeño cheese grits. Everything was bursting with flavor. The only snafoo was with our desserts not being ready for 30 minutes after our meal. Otherwise service was great and the owner makes his rounds greeting guests as they arrive which was a nice touch. Came here on a fly while in the area on a Sunday. Never heard of Dawn AM Eatery, but it looked pretty and inviting when I walked by so decided to stop in. It was just me so I was seated quickly and that is where the quickness ended. My drink and food took forever and it didn't appear too crowded so not sure what the hold up was. Ordered the salmon croquettes, which come with a side of eggs and toast. The salmon croquettes were overcooked because they were too hard and the side of white rice was hard as well. I also ordered the greyhound drink which was good and the most enjoyable part of the visit along with beautiful view of the outside. Price point pretty comparable, $16 for entree, $14 for drink. I will say my favorite bit of the day was the Salmon Deviled Egg Appetizer. My only disappointment was there was no acknowledgment of my parent's anniversary, especially since I note to mention that we were celebrating that when I booked the reservation. The noise level is loud since the place echoes. There's a lot of lighting since there are windows all around. The chicken and cornbread french toast was pretty good. The cornbread French toast is crumbly topped with sliced peaches and the fried chicken is flaky. The shrimp and grits is delicious which I highly recommend. It's the kind of spot that makes you want to linger a little longer, sip a little slower, and romanticize your morning. I ordered the Georgie Peach Pancakes--and listen, they did not disappoint. They were flavorful, warm, soft--but not overly sweet, which I loved. I added oyster mushrooms as my protein and babyyyy, that dipping sauce took it over the edge. Like, you could bottle that up and I'd buy it. But the real star? The "Spell On You" mezcal cocktail with avocado foam. YES, avocado. It was smoky, smooth, and surprisingly refreshing--honestly one of the best cocktails I've had in a while. I wish they had a more elevated iced coffee option though, like a chicory blend or something house-made. Just something with a little more oomph. Vibe Tip: Live music or soft jazz on the patio would elevate the entire experience. I kept imagining a lil' band in the corner, glasses clinking, Girlies brunching, laughter bouncing off the walls... Whew. Somebody make it happen. Always a great experience, I appreciate a restaurant where my vegan hubby and I can dine together since I'm not vegan. He loved his chix and waffles, just egg and hash browns. They were the perfect crispynress and the waffle with the blueberries were a chefs kiss. I had deviled eggs and salmon croquettes. I am such a fan of their deviled eggs with the smoked salmon and capers..yummy. This was my first time having the Salmon croquettes, they were fried very well but lacked seasoning. I've dined here several times and this was a first for me, usually anything I order is delicious. The service was very attentive and friendly, love the ambiance and the relaxing colors. We also have the most delicious cups of tea to go along with the beautiful view of the park from our seat. This place is one of my favs. read more
