So glad I ordered this again. The brioche French toast unfortunately was average. There didn't seem to be enough egg batter soaked into the toast and the batter needed salt. Also it arrived lukewarm, but our server got us a new order that was nice and hot. The biscuits were delicious. My group especially enjoyed the hot honey that came on the side. I also tried my friend's salmon croquettes. They had great flavor but were on the dry side. A sauce would be good to serve with these. My hot chocolate was good but not worth $6.50. Celebrating Chicago Restaurant Week! Dawn restaurant serves traditional southern food and they do it well. Their menu features a variety of main dishes with a choice of two sides, a great way to try a variety of foods if dining with friends who like to share. The food was delicious and was served hot and fresh. Standouts were the fried catfish, gumbo and short rib with jalapeño cheese grits. Everything was bursting with flavor. The only snafoo was with our desserts not being ready for 30 minutes after our meal. Otherwise service was great and the owner makes his rounds greeting guests as they arrive which was a nice touch. I truly enjoy visiting Hyde Park because it's always a good time. Parking sucks which can make any experience less enjoyable. I have had my car ticketed and even towed before. Today, I literally had to sit with my hazards on and wait for someone to leave. Met up with my best friend and upon entering Quinton welcomed us in by singing. What a bubbly personality. Already love the energy and the vibe as this restaurant is buzzing with a diverse group of patrons. Looked over the menus and decided to go with the choices on the Restaurant Week menu. We chose different starters as to share. Smoked salmon deviled eggs, delish. Fried green tomatoes were nice, served with an aioli sauce. Fried chicken could have used more spices or seasonings. Last month I took my parents to Dawn for their anniversary. This place has a cute vibe and very nice staff. I'm glad we went during the week, because I've heard the weekends are very busy. We did not feel rushed during our meal, we had time to browse the menu and order multiple things to try. Food was very good, hot and fresh. I will say my favorite bit of the day was the Salmon Deviled Egg Appetizer. My only disappointment was there was no acknowledgment of my parent's anniversary, especially since I note to mention that we were celebrating that when I booked the reservation. Also you couldn't order the mimosa flight for the table (included 3 drinks). If you wanted to order it had to be per person or order an individual glass of mimosa. Finally got a chance to experience this amazing eatery. We came on a Friday around noon and it still bustling with business! The service was swift as well. My friend got the shrimp and grits and I got the salmon salad with some fries. Because it so busy and the tables are rather close, the chatter around made it hard to hear ( it was loud lol). Came here on a fly while in the area on a Sunday. Never heard of Dawn AM Eatery, but it looked pretty and inviting when I walked by so decided to stop in. It was just me so I was seated quickly and that is where the quickness ended. My drink and food took forever and it didn't appear too crowded so not sure what the hold up was. Ordered the salmon croquettes, which come with a side of eggs and toast. The salmon croquettes were overcooked because they were too hard and the side of white rice was hard as well. I also ordered the greyhound drink which was good and the most enjoyable part of the visit along with beautiful view of the outside. Price point pretty comparable, $16 for entree, $14 for drink. Free street parking, but it's Hyde Park so it can be tough to find a park depending on date/time. I'm glad I had a chance to try Dawn but will not go out of my way to return. read more

We did the prix fixe menu they had but honestly all the food served on the special menu was also on the regular menu. The entrance is hard to find but there are signs that guide you to the front door. They have fresh pasties at the counter that you can purchase when you walk in. The bathrooms are in the lobby area of a living residence that's attached to the restaurant. You need keys for the bathroom. The decor is bright and lively with pastel colors of Tiffany blue and yellow on the walls and pink chairs at the bar. It doesn't feel like you're in Chicago, but more of a tropical place. The noise level is loud since the place echoes. There's a lot of lighting since there are windows all around. The chicken and cornbread french toast was pretty good. The cornbread French toast is crumbly topped with sliced peaches and the fried chicken is flaky. The shrimp and grits is delicious which I highly recommend. Large groups can eat here but highly suggest making reservations otherwise it would be a long wait. They were the perfect crispynress and the waffle with the blueberries were a chefs kiss. I had deviled eggs and salmon croquettes. We had a reservation, which apparently was more of a suggestion, since we still waited 15 minutes for a table. Once seated, it took another 10 minutes for a waitress to acknowledge we existed and take drink orders. Appetizers arrived in 30 minutes, entrees in nearly 50. And after all that waiting, they still managed to mess up the order. The restaurant was full when we arrived, but as our meal dragged on, tables kept clearing out around us, so the slow pace became harder and harder to justify. The couple next to us clearly reached their limit and walked out before their food ever showed up. Smart move on their part. I wish I'd followed them. I came here on my day off, Thursday morning, with a Griffin MSI reservation in about an hour. It was sparsely populated, which was a relief to me, I heard it could be busy with spotty service. I was seated by a window and given a menu. The Halloween decorations were a nice touch. The waiter, a nice young man, answered my questions with certainty. I ordered decaf coffee, shrimp/grits, and an English muffin. I really wanted the biscuit but I had a lot of calories to consume later; also, the English muffin was a cool tribute to the 007 James Bond exhibit. Usually the beverage is served first, but I received my coffee with the food. Not too pleased, but the food itself was awesome! There were plenty of grits with the shrimp, and they were spicy but not overwhelming. If I were with someone, I would have considered pancakes or an egg dish. I heard this place offers 'High Tea'. I was very happy to add Dawn A.M. Eatery on the list for my personal 2024 Brunch Challenge. I've seen the restaurant a few times while driving in Hyde Park for tacos, but I had no idea of the amount of southern classics that were on the menu. The restaurant is located at the base of the Windemere House apartments. Some of the interesting dishes that are at Dawn A.M. Eatery are: Chicken and Waffle and smoked salmon deviled eggs as appetizers. There's also pot roast and jalapeno grits and Georgia peach pancakes. We basically filled the table with food, including Lemon Raspberry Waffles, Blackened Catfish and a side of Jalapeño Grits with bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns. We also enjoyed a croissant and orange roll. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our food; my tastebuds were definitely doing a happy dance. While dining, one of the owners walked around and greeted guests, and asked how we were doing and if we enjoyed the meal. I thought that was a nice experience before leaving. Dawn represents a really fun eating experience. I think when it comes to breakfast food, it can be so easy to get used to the usual offerings. At Dawn, there's a playfulness in the way they explore flavor while remaining true to what we would think of as breakfast food. I ordered the Georgia Peach pancakes and they were AMAZING. The portion size is on point and in my opinion could actually feed two people. The peaches tasted fresh and were super well seasoned. The creme anglaise was perfect and of course the pancakes were light and fluffy. These are an absolute hit and I WILL be back for more. The service is also really great and attentive. Any extras we needed they were more than happy to assist. The overall decor feels like a nod to a traditional diner brought into the modern era with a nod to art deco style as well. I wanted to love this place, but it was just ok. The cornbread French toast was very underwhelming. It was super soft, topped with a warm peach compote, and super soft canned peaches. Honestly, it felt like the entire dish was mush. The texture was just completely off. Fresh peaches would help bring a bit of texture to the dish. Overall, it's mediocre at best. The chicken thigh had very little flavor. I simply don't understand how a southern restaurant can have under seasoned fried chicken. Additionally the chicken was not properly battered as the vast majority separated during the frying process. Lastly, it's not a good value meal. $20 for a chicken thigh and french toast is absurd. I hate to sound repetitive, but overall the meal felt incomplete. Something is missing, perhaps a side of eggs and a berry fruit salad. The meal had no color, poor presentation, it was just blah. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits. The taste was fine, but again, it's another blah dish. There was literally no presentation, it looked like someone just tossed a few shrimp on top and sprinkled a couple chives. The dish wasn't elevated at all. The appetizers were good, although the presentation was a bit off. The service, however, was extremely slow. It took nearly 30 minutes to get our cocktails, and the food came shortly after. We decided to give this place a try and did not have a problem getting a table on a late Saturday morning. I will say, parking can definitely be a challenge. Customer service was great. I had a drink cause I was stressed we may not get in since she was late but overall a good time. Note you can't sit here forever, they have to turn those tables hunny.
