I had an upper arm tattoo done yesterday. I met with Josh a week earlier to talk about my vision and he drew a draft for me and I could tell he got it! He shared his draft with me prior to my appointment and we only slightly tweaked it before the real one. It is absolutely beautiful and just as I envisioned! The place is clean, plays good music, a ton of things to look at while you get your tattoo. My session lasted just over two hours. All my questions were answered. I was just looking at reviews for a piercer on another site for a friend, and realized that I have not reviewed Davis St. yet, so here I am. I love everything about this place. The owner, Mark, has tattooed my husband and myself many many times. We have referred both friends and family over the years and will continue to do so. Mark is a great artist and a stand up bloke. His shop is clean and inviting. They are professional and, just as Importantly , friendly!! Mark specializes in large Japanese work and nails it everytime. Don't worry tho , if you are wanting something other than Japanese his artists are all highly competent and established. Even my mum who lives in the UK waits until she visits Dallas to get her work. I took her back to Davis St last November and she is over the moon with her piece. Go visit these blokes, you won't be disappointed read more

When I was 18 years ago I looked up who was the best in Dallas and I found Mark's name on many awards. I drive down from OKC and picked something off the wall. I was 18 and didn't think it out. The color never faded and the lines were perfect. When I turned 30 I wanted to get something that meant something to me. So I went back to Mark. He and I went back and forth with a few ideas and once we got it locked in as to what I wanted he sketched up an drawing. Response to Lauren S. I believe we all go to tattoo shops thinking we know what is best for our look, art, and body. Truth is we don't. Usually. I have been going to Josh R who responded to your review since I was 18. Now being 31 I can say he has steered me always in the right direction. Sometimes I don't want to hear it because I have seen similar work as to what I want on someone else and it looks amazing....but Josh will explain why he feels as a artist it isn't a good idea for me personally. Key word artist. This is their career. Their calling. I would never walk into a artists studio and tell them their vision is wrong and mine is right. I have referred many people to Davis Street and before when most of the crew was at Obscurities down on Cedar Springs. All have had amazing experiences with Josh and other artists. I would highly recommend in the future you don't go to a shop that is highly recommended. Because most of the time people like you will experience this same thing. Artists that will stand their ground and not just slap something on you that you think will "look great"! So to anyone looking for great artists and someone to help guide them with their canvas please go to this shop. If you are like Lauren here move along. Also side note. I'm very proud of all the work I have had done by Josh. I'm a hairstylist at Floyd's and I would say at least 80% if my clients rave about my work. They always ask where I go. First off, Davis Street Tattoo does respond to e-mails. I had a tattoo started in Iceland but was unable to get it finished there. I didn't expected to have such a hard time finding someone to finish it. Most shops that I e-mailed never even got back to me. So, thanks Mark for the e-mail back and suggesting Alex. Alex looked at what I had and come up with a plain to finish it. One session down and it looks great. Just a couple more session before it's complete. Would Give Zero Stars if I Could. Gave my deposit for a design, then was placed in the FORGOTTEN Pile. It's been over 2 months and I am still waiting for my money back seeing as I never received a potential design for my sleeve tattoo. When I first came for my face to face, I was told by the tattooer that he could work on my design (that he had the availability), then he all of a sudden was booked up and couldn't get to my design and still gives me the run around about my deposit. Still waiting on my money back... I would NOT recommend this place. For the $160/hr price they charge, it is NOT worth the Hassle. Buyer Beware. read more

The shop looks great and you can tell they take very good care of it. Very clean and laid back atmosphere. All the staff members are very friendly and seem to really care about providing great customer service and high quality custom tattoos. Mark Thompson is my guy and I've been going to him for years. The moment you have a consultation with him you'll realize the amount of experience he has to offer and learn it's in your best interest to let him take the drivers seat in design. He will listen to your ideas and then explain what works and what doesn't which is so important when getting something that's going to be on you forever, I can't stress that enough. Marks very easy to talk to and most importantly a true artist that really wants to give you the absolute best tattoo possible. I've gotten many tattoos from him now and will continue to go back. Working with Mark was simply amazing. My wife and I went to him to have similar but not matching pieces done. I got a full sleeve and my wife got a rib piece. Concept was the same but the 2 pieces stand totally alone and look amazing but are awesome when seen together. Mark drew our ideas out during our consultation and it was more than what we could've possibly envisioned!! We did 4 back to back 3.5-4 hr sessions with Mark, he is laid back and so easy going! Always making sure we were comfortable..Our experience was so great and my wife went back about 6 months later to get a quarter sleeve. Wouldn't go to anybody else!! I had originally left an honest review about my recent experience here, but then was attacked in private message about it. So instead I want edit it so you know what to expect with this place. Since Yelp has a character limit, I have shortened the review. Please refer to Facebook for the full review My cousin and I had been planning to get a tattoo together for a long time, and since she was planning a trip up here we decided to make an appointment. We searched around and a friend of mine had suggested this place. 3 weeks before her trip we made the appointment with Domnick to do our tattoos. Since I live 1 hour away and my cousin was 6 hours away, he was able to accept the appointment over the phone and an email description of what we wanted. We had spent some time on the email being very specific with what we wanted and we added several pictures for reference. Sunday comes around and we drive to our appointment super excited! We walk in and met Dom right away. We walked back, sat down, and then he asked us what we wanted to do or what ideas we had. I asked him to pull up our email so we could reference it and the pictures. It felt as if we were starting from scratch, and that our email wasn't looked over. My cousin definitely wanted some type of vine with flowers around her upper arm like an arm band, and I definitely wanted flowers behind my ear along my hairline. He briefly told me neck tattoos are a no-go since I'm not covered in tattoos already. It wasn't really explained why, but it wasn't as big of a deal as my cousins tattoo. For the next hour we discussed my cousins armband tattoo. Dom told us the armband idea was a terrible idea and that she would regret it later. We had a brief moment to cool off, get a drink, and collect our thoughts. We both felt completely overwhelmed and upset at this point. We were under the impression that our simple ideas were okay since it was explained in detail in the email and no questions were asked prior. Despite feeling this way, my cousin figured she would at least see what other ideas Dom had. He made some suggestions that were far from what we wanted (We wanted specifically Viola flowers in memory of our grandma named Viola) and eventually my cousin found something that could work for her. The tattoo they came up with was said to be a 3-4 hour long tattoo and with only 2 hours left there was only time for me since the shop closed. So we began discussing my tattoo. I had found tattoo flash online of a purple pansy/Viola flower that I absolutely loved. I knew it wouldn't be exact, so I tried explaining what specifically I liked about it. He started drawing and figuring out the exact placement and so on. He began working on my tattoo and I felt no pain! When there was pain it was very minimal, and I was impressed. My cousin took an in-progress picture and showed me, and at that point I realized I wasn't getting the colors and style I had asked for. However, what I saw was so beautiful that it wasn't worth mentioning at the time. After discussing the entire situation in the car driving home, we realized that even though I got a great tattoo... The entire point was that my cousin drove in from out of town for us to get one TOGETHER. And then there was the fact that the tattoo I received wasn't what I expected, and it wasn't made aware to me that what I was requesting was impossible or a bad idea. I had mentioned our experience to a few people and every single one of them mentioned their artist staying well passed closing for out-of-town customers. They then told me to leave an honest review... So I did. About an hour after I left the review on Yelp and Facebook, I noticed I had a private message in Yelp from Josh R, another artist at the shop. It was addressing my recent review and seemed apologetic at first. As I read further, I couldn't believe what was happening. I felt like I was being attacked about my review. I strongly felt as if our overall experience was worth mentioning to the general public. After all, that's what reviews are for! It seemed as if he was suggesting that himself (and his coworkers) are superior and us customers are inadequate and don't know what the definition of a good tattoo is. *i copied a piece of his message here, you can view it on favebook* I am left completely shocked at how this shop handled my review. I own my own small business, and when customers complain to me or leave bad reviews, I look further into it and try to see it from their perspective. People are allowed to feel the way they feel even if I don't agree. When I did graphic design, we could give suggestions with our professional opinion, but in the end the customer gets what they want and we were not allowed to belittle the unhappy customer in any way. I work for the customer, not the other way around. The same thing should apply to this situation with our tattoos... However, that is not the case. read more
